WotLK Alchemy 1-450 Guide

Alchemy Upgrade in WoW Classic WotLK, ExpCarry Guide

Alchemy, within the realm of World of Warcraft, permits players to fabricate an array of consumable items and venture into the unique process of transmutation, turning one resource into another. This intricate art of transmuting materials is frequently utilized by other professions or can be a reliable source of income when auctioned. In this comprehensive guide, we delve into the mastery of Alchemy in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, reveal the location of the Alchemy trainers, enumerate the unique traits of this profession, and much more.

An Overview of the Profession

Unleash the power of Alchemy, a truly indispensable profession in the vast realm of World of Warcraft! As a skilled Alchemist, you gain the incredible ability to concoct potent potions, elixirs, flasks, and even transform raw materials into valuable resources essential for various crafts.

In the ever-exciting Classic TBC, Alchemy has proven itself to be a cut above other professions like Engineering or Blacksmithing, offering unparalleled benefits to adventurers seeking an edge. However, with the advent of WotLK Classic, the balance has been meticulously fine-tuned, ensuring that all professions now bestow relatively equal bonuses. Fear not, fellow players, as each profession brings unique advantages to the table, depending on your character class.

Whether you're a seasoned Alchemist seeking to enhance your skills or a curious newcomer eager to explore the endless possibilities, our platform is the perfect hub for all things World of Warcraft and Alchemy. Embark on this epic journey with us and unlock the true potential of your character!

What materials are utilized in Alchemy?

Primarily, Alchemists harness various herbs to craft an array of consumables. Occasionally, gems and eternal elements are required to construct precious stones like Transmute: Earthsiege Diamond. To prevent resource scarcity, we advise pairing Alchemy with Herbalism or Mining. The former ensures a steady supply of herbs for consumables crafting, while the latter provides ore and gems necessary for transmutation. Additionally, you may consider taking up Jewelcrafting along with Alchemy if your focus lies in crafting precious stones.

Crafting Specializations

One such remarkable addition is the introduction of three crafting specializations, each offering a distinct advantage to ambitious Alchemists:

  • Elixir Master – Unlock the potential to craft an additional elixir or flask, enhancing your capabilities and providing valuable resources to aid you on your adventures.
  • Potion Master – Embrace the power to create extra potions, giving you a tactical advantage in battles and ensuring you're always prepared for the challenges that lie ahead.
  • Transmutation Master – Harness the forces of transmutation and gain the chance to acquire an additional item during the process, turning your Alchemical pursuits into even more rewarding endeavors.

Whether you're a master of potions, an expert transmuter, or someone looking to dive into the world of Alchemy for the first time, our platform is your ultimate resource for all things WoW Alchemy.

Each specialization provides approximately a 20% increase in potions, elixirs, flasks, and transmuted materials during crafting. The functioning of these specializations and where to learn them will be detailed in the relevant section of this guide.

Alchemy in WoW WotLK: What can Alchemists create?

Potions

Potions like the Runic Mana Potion or the Potion of Speed offer specific bonuses to players and their effects last for a short duration. However, there are drawbacks. After consuming a potion, a 1-minute cooldown is triggered, and the potion can only be used once per fight. Also, the effect dissipates upon death.

When it comes to crafting, potions typically require fewer materials than other consumable items. Alchemists can create cost-effective defensive potions such as the Powerful Shadow Protection Potion, requiring only a few Crystallized Life and one Imbued Vial to create.

In WotLK Classic, Alchemists can no longer craft cauldrons as they did in TBC. However, new unique alchemical items have been introduced: Endless Healing Potion and Endless Mana Potion. They are not consumed upon use but have a lesser effect. These endless potions for HP and MP recovery are ideal for players leveling their characters. Note that Mixology does not enhance these potions. Thus, their effectiveness cannot be increased through Mixology.

Elixirs

Elixirs such as Elixir of Accuracy or Mighty Fortitude Elixir, provide a character-enhancing effect that lasts for an hour and disappears upon death. Crafting elixirs generally requires a moderate amount of materials compared to making flasks, but their usefulness entirely depends on your class.

In WotLK Classic, elixirs are still categorized as "Battle" and "Guardian." You can only have one elixir of each type active at a time. With Mixology, a new passive skill for Alchemists, you can extend the duration of your self-made battle/guardian elixirs or enhance their stat bonuses.

Flasks

Flasks like the Flask of the Frost Wyrm provide a 1-hour buff that can also be enhanced by the Alchemist skill Mixology. Furthermore, a player can now craft two flasks at once to compensate for the decreased duration of the flask effect compared to previous expansions. Be aware, however, that Mixology doesn't enhance the effectiveness of the Flask of the North, which is similar to endless potions.

Transmutation

Transmuted materials such as Skyflare Diamond and Transmute: Titanium are in high demand by players with other professions. In the later stages of Wrath of the Lich King, Alchemists can even transmute unique gems like King's Amber, Majestic Zircon, and Cardinal Ruby from rare gems and eternal elements through transmutation. Note that WotLK material transmutation is available once every 20 hours, while transmutations from previous expansions (WoW Classic and TBC Classic) don't have a cooldown.

Progression Stages of Alchemy in World of Warcraft (WoW) Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK)

Apprentice and Journeyman: The basics of potion, elixir, and flask crafting can be learned from any of the craft trainers in your faction's capital city. When you reach a major city, engage in a dialogue with a city guard and ask them to guide you to the Alchemy trainer. This will leave a mark on your map indicating the location of your trainer.

Expert: To advance your crafting skill above 300, you must visit an Alchemy teacher in Outland. Here, you can develop your craft up to level 375. Alliance players can learn from Alchemist Gribble in Honor Hold in Hellfire Peninsula. Horde players can enhance their skills with Apothecary Antonivich in Thrallmar at the same location. There's also a neutral teacher, Lorokeem, in Lower City, Shattrath, who can guide players from both factions.

Artisan: To level up your profession from 375 to 450, head to Northrend and speak with one of the Grand Master Alchemists. The locations of these NPCs can be found below.

Grand Master Alchemists in Northrend:

Alliance:

  • Faelorn Nightwhisper – Valiance Keep, Borean Tundra
  • Lanolis Dewdrop – Valgarde, Howling Fjord.

Horde:

  • Arthur Henslowe – Warsong Hold, Borean Tundra
  • Wilhelmina Renel – Vengeance Landing, Howling Fjord.

Neutral:

  • Linzy Blackbolt – Dalaran,
  • Crystal Brightspark – Argent Tournament, Icecrown.

Note that Crystal Brightspark is not available until the later phases of the expansion.

Leveling Alchemy in WotLK Classic (1-450)

To swiftly advance your expertise in Alchemy, you should aim to craft items that are marked with orange or yellow in your crafting window. Crafting orange items will definitely increase your skill level, while yellow items have a high chance of increasing your Alchemy level.

Crafting green-marked items will only occasionally increase your skill level, so only craft these if no other options are available or if they can be sold for profit on the Auction House. Grey-marked items will not increase your Alchemy level at all, so there's no point in crafting these.

The challenge of leveling Alchemy lies in the fact that there's no 'correct' way to do it as the cost of materials, potions, elixirs, flasks, etc., varies on each server. Additionally, prices for all things related to Alchemy fluctuate daily. For instance, you might be able to purchase the necessary herbs for a low price on the Auction House on weekdays, only to find them costing five times as much on the weekends.

Alchemy Specializations in Wrath of the Lich King – Benefits and Learning Process

There are three specializations available to Alchemists, each affecting the effectiveness of transmutations and crafting specific consumable items: flasks, potions, elixirs, and materials. These were introduced in The Burning Crusade and have not been removed in the WotLK Classic edition.

The core idea behind each specialization is to increase the quantity of items obtained during transmutations or crafting "consumables". In simpler terms, while transmuting one material into another or during the crafting of flasks/potions/elixirs, you have a small chance of obtaining an extra identical item. Observations show that on average, each specialization increases the number of items crafted by the Alchemist by about 20%.

Important! You can only choose one out of the three available Alchemy specializations.

Where and How to Learn Alchemy Specializations

In Outland's Hellfire Peninsula, faction-specific Alchemy trainers offer three specialization quests to players level 68 and above, provided your crafting skill level is at least 325.

Elixir Master

To obtain the "Elixir Master" specialization, visit the neutral Alchemy teacher, Lorokeem, in Shattrath and take the Elixir Master quest from him. After completing this quest, Lorokeem will give you another task, also titled Elixir Master, but with a different objective. This time, the Alchemy teacher will ask you to bring him:

  • Primal Might (10x) – Drops from Keepers and Rift Lords in The Black Morass dungeon.
  • Major Defense Potion (5x) – Crafted by the Alchemist. To make 5 potions, you will need the following materials:
  • Ancient Lichen – 15x
  • Terocone – 5x
  • Imbued Vial – 5x
  • Elixir of Major Power (5x) – Crafted by the Alchemist. To make 5 elixirs, you will need the following materials:
  • Netherbloom – 5x
  • Terocone – 15x
  • Imbued Vial – 5x
  • Major Agility Elixir (5x) – Crafted by the Alchemist. To make 5 elixirs, you will need the following materials:
  • Netherbloom – 10x
  • Terocone – 5x
  • Imbued Vial – 5x

After completing this straightforward quest, you will become proficient in the Elixir Master specialization.

Potion Master

To obtain the "Potion Master" specialization, go to Lauranna Thar'well in Cenarion Refuge, Zangarmarsh, and take the Potion Master quest from her. Turn it in and get a second Potion Master quest, same name but different objective. This time, Lauranna Thar'well will ask you to bring her:

  • Botanist's Field Guide – Can be obtained from the body of High Botanist Freywinn in The Botanica dungeon;
  • Super Healing Potion (5x) – Crafted by the Alchemist. To make 5 potions, you will need the following materials:
  • Ragveil – 10x
  • Netherbloom – 5x
  • Imbued Vial – 5x
  • Super Mana Potion (5x) – Crafted by the Alchemist. To make 5 potions, you will need the following materials:
  • Dreaming Glory – 10x
  • Netherbloom – 5x
  • Imbued Vial – 5x
  • Major Dreamless Sleep Potion (5x) – Crafted by the Alchemist. To make 5 potions, you will need the following materials:
  • Dreaming Glory – 10x
  • Nightmare Vine – 5x
  • Imbued Vial – 5x

After completing this simple quest, you will learn the Potion Master specialization. It is worth noting that, in terms of the cost of materials used in crafting potions for the quest, this specialization is the cheapest and easiest to obtain compared to the others.

If you wish to abandon your chosen specialization and obtain another one, you need to return to the NPC with whom you initially learned your specialization, and pay them 150 gold to cancel your choice and learn another direction of alchemy entirely for free. For example, if you learned Transmutation Master, then go to Zarevhi at Stormspire (Netherstorm) and give him 150 gold, and then visit Lauranna Thar'well or Lorokeem to obtain a new specialization.

Please note that you do not need to do any quests to change specializations. Therefore, you can use a trick – first learn Potion Master, then cancel it and take Transmutation Master. In this case, it will be easier for you to give the NPC 150 gold than to spend expensive materials on crafting Primal Might.

Transmutation Master

To obtain the "Transmutation Master" specialization, go to Zarevhi at Stormspire, Netherstorm, and take the Transmutation Master quest from him. Turn it in and get a second Transmutation Master quest, same name but different objective. This time, Zarevhi will ask you to bring him:

  • Primal Might (4x) – Created by Alchemists through transmutation at skill level 350 and above. To create 4 Primal Might, you will need:
  • Primal Earth – 4x
  • Primal Water – 4x
  • Primal Air – 4x
  • Primal Fire – 4x
  • Primal Mana – 4x

Hand over 4 Primal Might to Zarevhi and he will teach you the Transmutation Master specialization. It's worth noting that learning this specialization is the most expensive, as the materials for creating Primal Might are sold at high prices.

If you wish to abandon your chosen specialization and obtain another one, you need to return to the NPC with whom you initially learned your specialization, and pay them 150 gold to cancel your choice and learn another direction of alchemy entirely for free. Alchemy Recipes in WoW Wrath of the Lich King and Their Sources

In WotLK Classic, some crafting recipes can be learned from profession trainers, others can be bought from NPCs, found in the open world (for example, looted from a defeated monster), obtained during transmutation, or during the crafting of various high-level consumables. In the latter case, you just need to create any Northrend alchemy items, then with a low chance you can unlock new recipes.

In addition, alchemists with a craft level of 400 and above can use Northrend Herb Research every 3 days to unlock a random new recipe. Below we will list all the alchemy recipes in WotLK and their sources.
