WoW Mount Drop Chance Calculator
Estimate your chance to get a mount after any number of runs. Enter the drop rate and attempts to see your probability, expected runs, and estimated weekly progress.
Works for raid mounts, dungeon drops, world bosses, and weekly alt farming.
These numbers are probability estimates, not guarantees. RNG can still be unlucky even after many runs.
How the WoW Mount Drop Chance Calculator Works
Every boss kill in World of Warcraft is an independent trial — your 200th run has the same drop chance as your first. There is no pity timer or bad luck protection for legacy mount drops. The calculator uses the standard formula: chance to get the mount at least once in n runs = 1 − (1 − p)n, where p is the drop rate as a decimal (e.g. 0.01 for 1%). This is the same math behind community tools on Wowhead and the in-game addon Rarity.
Enter the drop percentage from Wowhead or another source, your number of runs (or planned runs), and optionally how many characters you farm with each week — the calculator shows your cumulative probability, milestone thresholds (50%, 75%, 90%, 95%), and estimated weeks of farming.
How Many Runs for a Rare WoW Mount? Drop Rates by Expansion
Most legacy raid mounts in WoW have a drop rate between 0.5% and 2%. Here's what that means in practice for popular mounts across every expansion:
The Burning Crusade Mounts
Ashes of Al'ar from Kael'thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep has a ~1.7% drop rate — roughly 41 runs for a 50% chance, 81 for 75%, and 135 for 90%. Fiery Warhorse's Reins from Attumen in Karazhan and Swift White Hawkstrider from Magisters' Terrace (Heroic) are both around 1%. TBC dungeons run on a daily lockout, so you can farm Hawkstrider and Raven Lord much faster than raid mounts.
Wrath of the Lich King Mounts
Invincible's Reins from the Lich King (ICC 25 Heroic) and Mimiron's Head from Yogg-Saron with 0 Keepers (Ulduar 25) are both ~1% — 69 runs for 50%, 138 for 75%, 230 for 90%. With weekly lockouts, that's over a year of farming on a single character. Running 5 alts cuts it to roughly 14 weeks for a 50/50 shot. The Onyxian Drake from Onyxia's Lair and Azure Drake from Malygos are also ~1% weekly lockout farms.
Cataclysm Mounts
Pureblood Fire Hawk and Flametalon of Alysrazor from Firelands have ~2% drop rates — 35 runs for 50%, about 69 for 75%. Blazing Drake and Experiment 12-B from Dragon Soul are both ~1%. Dungeon mounts like Vitreous Stone Drake (Stonecore) and Drake of the North Wind (Vortex Pinnacle) can be farmed on normal difficulty with dungeon resets — up to 10 runs per hour.
Mists of Pandaria Mounts (Retail & MoP Classic)
MoP has some of the rarest mounts in the game. Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent from the Sha of Anger has an estimated 0.03% drop rate — you'd need around 2,302 kills for a 50% chance, which is years of farming even with many alts. Son of Galleon (~0.5%) and Cobalt Primordial Direhorn from Oondasta (~0.5%) are also extremely rare world boss drops. The Astral Cloud Serpent from Elegon in Mogu'shan Vaults is ~1% — a standard weekly farm. With Mists of Pandaria Classic now live, these mounts are once again in high demand, and bonus rolls (Elder Charms of Good Fortune) give you an extra chance per kill.
Warlords of Draenor & Later
Solar Spirehawk from Rukhmar (~0.5%), Mythic-only mounts from Legion and BfA raids (Shackled Ur'zul, Glacial Tidestorm, G.M.O.D.) at ~1%, and seasonal mounts like Big Love Rocket (~0.03%) all follow the same math. Use the calculator above with any drop rate to see your exact odds.

Best Use Cases for This Calculator
This tool is designed for mount collectors farming legacy content in WoW Retail and WoW Classic (including Mists of Pandaria Classic). Use it to:
Plan your weekly lockout route — figure out how many alts you need to reach a 90% chance of dropping Invincible, Ashes of Al'ar, or any other boss mount. Compare drop rates — see why farming a 2% Firelands mount is dramatically faster than a 0.03% world boss mount. Track your progress — enter your current attempt count to see where you stand. Estimate event mounts — Big Love Rocket (0.03%, daily for ~2 weeks per year) and Headless Horseman's Mount (0.5%, daily for ~2 weeks) benefit especially from this calculator because attempts are limited by event duration.
Where to Find Accurate WoW Mount Drop Rates
The most reliable sources for drop rates are Wowhead (which aggregates data from the Wowhead Looter addon across millions of kills), the in-game mount journal (shows source but not percentages), and community addons like Rarity (tracks your personal attempts). Keep in mind that Blizzard does not publish official drop rates for most mounts — community data is the best estimate available.
During special events like Collector's Bounty (first held July 2025), Blizzard temporarily increases drop rates for legacy mounts — in some cases by as much as 5–10×. If you're farming during such an event, make sure to use the boosted drop rate in the calculator, not the normal one.
FAQ — WoW Mount Drop Rates
Does 1% drop rate mean I will get the mount in 100 runs?
No. 1% means each kill has a 1-in-100 chance, independently. After 100 runs, your cumulative chance to have gotten at least one drop is about 63.4%, not 100%. Roughly one in three players will still be empty-handed after 100 attempts.
Is there a pity timer for WoW mount drops?
For most legacy mounts — no. There is no bad luck protection or increasing drop rate over time. Each kill is an independent roll. The exception is some newer content (e.g. certain Dragonflight and War Within mounts), where Blizzard has added increasing drop rates after repeated kills.
What is the drop rate of Invincible's Reins?
Invincible drops from the Lich King on 25-player Heroic difficulty in Icecrown Citadel at approximately 1%. You can only attempt once per week per character. With 10 alts, you have about a 50% chance within 7 weeks.
What is the drop rate of Ashes of Al'ar?
Ashes of Al'ar drops from Kael'thas Sunstrider in Tempest Keep at approximately 1.7%. That's slightly better than most 1% mounts — you need about 41 kills for a 50% chance instead of 69.
How rare is the Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent?
Extremely rare — approximately 0.03% (1 in 3,333 kills) from the Sha of Anger world boss in Kun-Lai Summit. With one character it would take roughly 2,302 kills just for a 50% chance. In Mists of Pandaria Classic, bonus rolls (Elder Charms of Good Fortune) give an extra chance per kill.
Do more alts really help with mount farming?
Yes — every max-level character gets its own weekly lockout. Five alts farming a 1% mount give you 5 chances per week instead of 1, cutting the expected time by ~80%. The calculator's "Characters per reset" field accounts for this.
Does this work for MoP Classic mounts?
Yes. The math is identical — a 1% drop in Retail is the same probability as 1% in Classic. Just enter the correct drop rate. MoP Classic mounts like Astral Cloud Serpent (Elegon, ~1%), Heavenly Onyx Cloud Serpent (Sha of Anger, ~0.03%), and Son of Galleon (~0.5%) all work with this calculator.
Is this calculator accurate for dungeon mounts?
Yes. Dungeon mounts like Deathcharger's Reins (Baron Rivendare, Stratholme) or Drake of the North Wind (Vortex Pinnacle) can be farmed by resetting the instance — up to 10 runs per hour. Set "Runs per week" to something like 50–70 to reflect how many you can realistically do per week.
What about the Collector's Bounty event?
During Collector's Bounty (first run: July 2025), Blizzard increased many legacy mount drop rates by 5–10×. For example, Ashes of Al'ar temporarily went from ~1.7% to ~6.7%. If you're farming during an active event, use the boosted percentage for accurate results.
