Stratholme is a ruined city in the Eastern Plaguelands and one of the most important locations in Warcraft history. The dungeon is effectively divided into two major routes: the Living or Scarlet Side, controlled by the Scarlet Crusade, and the Undead or Baron Side, dominated by the Scourge and Baron Rivendare.

Stratholme is a high-level 5-player dungeon in the northern Eastern Plaguelands. Both major routes are intended for characters around levels 58-60.

The Story of Stratholme

Stratholme was once one of the most important human cities of Lordaeron. Its fate changed during the Third War when Prince Arthas discovered that grain distributed throughout the city had been infected with the plague of undeath.

Believing the population would soon become servants of the Scourge, Arthas ordered the Culling of Stratholme. His mentor Uther the Lightbringer refused to participate, marking one of the decisive moments in Arthas' fall.

The ruined city later became divided between two powerful forces. The Scarlet Crusade occupied part of Stratholme and continued its fanatical war against undeath, while the Scourge controlled the deeper undead quarter under Baron Rivendare.

This division is reflected directly in the dungeon's two major routes.

Stratholme Living Side – Scarlet Route

The Living Side, also called Strat Live or the Scarlet Side, begins from the main entrance and progresses through Crusader's Square into the Scarlet Bastion.

The route contains a mixture of undead encounters and Scarlet Crusade leadership before ending with Grand Crusader Dathrohan, whose true identity is revealed as the dreadlord Balnazzar.

The Unforgiven

The Unforgiven appears during progression through the ruined streets and is particularly relevant to physical Leather users.

A notable current Forever reward is the Mask of the Unforgiven, which provides Stamina together with hit and critical strike bonuses.

Timmy the Cruel

Timmy the Cruel is an undead monstrosity encountered before the Scarlet Bastion.

One of his recognizable current Forever drops is The Cruel Hand of Timmy, a fast one-handed mace with an on-hit effect that temporarily reduces the target's attributes.

Timmy can also contribute to Dungeon Set 1 progression through his class-set loot table.

Cannon Master Willey

Cannon Master Willey guards the Scarlet Bastion and uses the artillery positioned around his encounter area.

The fight is distinctive because nearby cannons can be used against incoming riflemen.

Willey is also relevant to professions. The current Forever database confirms Plans: Heartseeker as one of his Blacksmithing recipe drops.

Archivist Galford

Archivist Galford guards the Scarlet Crusade's archive and is the objective of the The Archivist quest.

The group must kill Galford and burn the Scarlet Archive. His room is also connected to the important Of Love and Family storyline.

One of his confirmed current Forever rewards is the Archivist Cape, which can roll different stat or spell-oriented enchantments.

Galford can also provide Dungeon Set gear and the Mage tome for the higher rank of Conjure Food.

Balnazzar

The final encounter of Living Stratholme initially appears as Grand Crusader Dathrohan. During the fight, his true identity as the dreadlord Balnazzar is revealed.

Balnazzar is important for Argent Dawn quest progression and several level-60 rewards. He is also associated with profession-specific loot, including the current Forever Pattern: Truefaith Vestments for Tailoring.

His loot table also contains the exceptionally rare Book of the Dead, an off-hand item that can summon a temporary skeleton.

Righteous Orbs and Living Stratholme

Living Stratholme is also an important farming destination for Righteous Orbs. These crafting reagents are used in several high-level recipes and enchantments.

Because orb acquisition depends on normal enemy and loot mechanics, a specific number of Righteous Orbs should never be guaranteed from one Stratholme run.

Stratholme Undead Side – Baron Run

The Undead Side, commonly called Strat UD, Baron Side or simply a Baron Run, focuses on the Scourge-controlled section of the city.

The route progresses through three major ziggurats, opens the way to Slaughter Square, continues through Ramstein the Gorger and ends with Baron Rivendare.

Key to the City and the Service Entrance

The Key to the City is obtained from Magistrate Barthilas.

The key allows access through Stratholme's Service Gate and makes future Baron-focused runs considerably more direct.

Without suitable Service Gate access, the group can still progress through Stratholme from the main side and reach the undead district through the connected city route.

Nerub'enkan, Baroness Anastari and Maleki the Pallid

The Baron route requires progression through three Scourge-controlled ziggurats.

• Nerub'enkan controls one ziggurat with undead scarabs and nerubian abilities.
• Baroness Anastari uses banshee abilities including possession and silence.
• Maleki the Pallid uses Frost and Shadow magic including Ice Tomb and Drain Life.

The enemies inside the associated ziggurats must also be cleared to disable the protections leading deeper into the Baron route.

Baroness Anastari Loot

Baroness Anastari has several useful caster rewards.

The current Forever database confirms:

• Anastari Heirloom – a Stamina necklace with additional Shadow spell damage.
• Dreadmist Sandals – part of the Warlock Dungeon Set 1.

Maleki the Pallid Loot

Maleki the Pallid is especially interesting to Shadow-oriented casters.

Maleki's Footwraps provide Stamina, Intellect and additional Shadow spell damage, making them relevant to Warlocks and Shadow-oriented caster builds.

Ramstein the Gorger

After the three ziggurats have been cleared, the route continues into Slaughter Square and the fight against Ramstein the Gorger.

Ramstein uses strong physical attacks and area damage and must be defeated before the final defense of Baron Rivendare's stronghold can be completed.

One unusual current Forever reward is Ramstein's Lightning Bolts, a trinket that deals Nature damage to nearby enemies when activated.

Baron Rivendare

Baron Rivendare is the final boss of the Undead Side and one of Stratholme's main farming targets.

Rivendare serves the Scourge as a powerful death knight and controls the undead quarter of the ruined city.

His loot table contains:

• multiple high-level weapons and armor pieces
• Dungeon Set 1 leg pieces for the original classes
• rare physical weapons
• the extremely rare Deathcharger's Reins

Deathcharger's Reins

Deathcharger's Reins is one of the most recognizable rare rewards associated with Stratholme.

The mount comes from Baron Rivendare and teaches the player to summon his undead steed.

The drop is extremely rare and must never be treated as guaranteed. Players specifically targeting the Deathcharger should expect that repeated Baron runs may be required without ever guaranteeing the mount.

Best Baron Rivendare Loot

None of these rewards are guaranteed. Runeblade of Baron Rivendare and Deathcharger's Reins are especially rare and can require extensive repeated farming.

Dungeon Set 1 Gear in Stratholme

Stratholme is one of the major sources of Dungeon Set 1 / Tier 0 gear at level 60.

Different bosses across both sides can drop class-specific set pieces, while Baron Rivendare is particularly important because his loot table includes the leg slot from multiple Dungeon Set 1 sets.

This makes Full Stratholme useful for players collecting:

Important Stratholme Quests

The Archivist

The Archivist is an important Argent Dawn quest.

The group must defeat Archivist Galford and burn the Scarlet Archive. Completing the quest opens further progression involving Balnazzar and eventually Baron Rivendare.

Of Love and Family

The Of Love and Family storyline is connected with Tirion Fordring and his lost family.

The dungeon objective sends players into the Scarlet Bastion to recover a hidden family painting from Galford's archive area.

This makes the Living side relevant not only for gear but also for one of the major story chains leading into Tirion's later progression.

Houses of the Holy and Stratholme Holy Water

Houses of the Holy requires players to search the city for Stratholme Holy Water.

The water is found in supply crates distributed around Stratholme and is also useful against undead enemies.

Because not every crate necessarily provides the desired item, this objective is best combined with a normal dungeon clear instead of treated as a guaranteed fixed pickup from a single location.

Ramstein Quest

The current Forever quest Ramstein sends Horde players to kill Ramstein the Gorger and return his head to Nathanos.

The quest rewards a choice between Royal Seal of Alexis and Elemental Circle and also provides Undercity reputation.

Menethil's Gift

Menethil's Gift connects Stratholme directly with the Ras Frostwhisper quest chain from Scholomance.

The relevant rune is located inside Baron Rivendare's chamber. Players following the Ras storyline should therefore include this objective in an Undead-side run.

Stratholme and Argent Dawn

Both sides of Stratholme are closely tied to the Argent Dawn. Boss kills, dungeon quests and Scourgestone-related progression can contribute to the character's wider Plaguelands endgame journey when the applicable systems are active.

This makes Stratholme useful beyond individual item farming: a run can combine level-60 gearing, quests and faction progression.

Stratholme for Professions

Profession drops are still subject to normal loot rules and should not be guaranteed from a single run.

Where Is Stratholme?

Stratholme is located in the northern Eastern Plaguelands.

The main city entrance provides the standard route into the Living side, while the Service Gate is used for more direct access to the Baron side when the appropriate access is available.

The ruined city is also closely connected with Light's Hope Chapel and other Argent Dawn progression throughout the Eastern Plaguelands.
