Buy our WoW Forever The Deadmines Boost to complete the level 15-22 dungeon beneath Moonbrook in Westfall with an organized group. The Deadmines offers early dungeon XP, Alliance quest progression, multiple boss encounters, Rare-quality weapons and armor, the Blackened Defias Leather set, and the final battle against Edwin VanCleef.

The Deadmines is one of the most iconic early Alliance dungeons in World of Warcraft. What begins as a mining complex beneath Westfall eventually opens into a massive underground harbor where the Defias Brotherhood is constructing a warship as part of its campaign against Stormwind.

The Deadmines Dungeon Overview

The Deadmines is a returning 5-player dungeon located beneath Moonbrook in Westfall. In WoW Forever, its main progression range is levels 15-22.

The dungeon is longer and more varied than most other early instances. The route moves from abandoned mines into a lumber operation, goblin foundry, underground harbor and finally the Defias ship where VanCleef is waiting.

The Deadmines Story and the Defias Brotherhood

The mines beneath Westfall were once among the most productive sources of gold in the human kingdoms. After Stormwind was destroyed during the First War and later rebuilt, the underground complex eventually became abandoned.

The rebuilding of Stormwind was carried out in large part by the Stonemasons' Guild, led by Edwin VanCleef. The workers believed they had not been properly compensated for rebuilding the city and their dispute with Stormwind's nobility eventually escalated into violence.

VanCleef and many former stonemasons became the Defias Brotherhood.

The Deadmines became their hidden headquarters. From the enormous underground complex, the Brotherhood recruited miners, goblins, pirates and other allies while secretly constructing a powerful ship intended for their conflict with Stormwind.

The Deadmines Bosses

BossRoleWhy It Matters
Rhahk'ZorOgre overseerFirst major boss and gatekeeper to the deeper mine.
Miner JohnsonRare minerOptional rare encounter with defensive loot including Gilded Buckler.
Sneed's Shredder / SneedGoblin shredder encounterImportant for Underground Assault and early weapon rewards.
GilnidGoblin engineerControls the foundry and guards progression toward Ironclad Cove.
Mr. SmiteDefias first mateSource of Smite's Mighty Hammer and other strong physical weapons.
Captain GreenskinGoblin pirate captainSource of Emberstone Staff and Impaling Harpoon.
Edwin VanCleefDefias leader / final bossMajor Alliance quest target and source of Cruel Barb and Blackened Defias Armor.
CookieOptional murloc cookBonus boss with caster wand and one-handed mace rewards.

Rhahk'Zor

Rhahk'Zor is the first major boss inside the instance. The ogre supervises Defias laborers near the beginning of the dungeon and blocks the route deeper into the mining complex.

The encounter is straightforward but usually includes additional Defias enemies nearby. Clearing those enemies before fully engaging Rhahk'Zor reduces unnecessary pressure on the healer and tank.

Miner Johnson – Rare Boss

Miner Johnson is an optional rare spawn found in a side area after the early mine section. He does not appear during every reset.

One of his notable current Forever rewards is the Gilded Buckler, an early shield with Agility and Stamina.

Because Miner Johnson is a rare encounter, neither the boss nor his loot should be treated as guaranteed from a single Deadmines run.

Sneed's Shredder and Sneed

Sneed's Shredder is a two-stage encounter inside the lumber section of The Deadmines.

The group first destroys the mechanical shredder. Once the machine is defeated, Sneed jumps out and the second stage begins immediately.

This boss is especially important for the Alliance quest Underground Assault, which requires the Gnoam Sprecklesprocket from the shredder.

Gilnid and the Defias Foundry

Gilnid controls the goblin foundry deep inside The Deadmines.

The foundry contains tightly packed goblins and engineers, so careless pulls can bring several enemies into combat at once. Once Gilnid is defeated, the route opens toward Ironclad Cove and the Defias ship.

Mr. Smite

Mr. Smite is the first mate of VanCleef's ship and one of the dungeon's most recognizable bosses.

During the fight, Smite temporarily stuns the group and runs to his weapon chest to change weapons. The encounter becomes more dangerous if his nearby Defias companions remain alive during these transitions.

His signature reward is the Smite's Mighty Hammer, a two-handed mace with Strength and Agility.

He can also drop Smite's Reaver, giving physical characters another one-handed weapon opportunity.

Captain Greenskin

Captain Greenskin is encountered on the Defias ship shortly before Edwin VanCleef.

He is particularly valuable for characters looking for caster or Agility-oriented weapons.

Edwin VanCleef

Edwin VanCleef is the leader of the Defias Brotherhood and the final main boss of The Deadmines.

He fights on the upper deck of the Defias ship together with stealthed Defias allies. Additional enemies can appear during the encounter, so groups should control the adds rather than focusing exclusively on VanCleef.

VanCleef is also the final target of the major The Defias Brotherhood quest chain.

Cookie – Optional Boss

Cookie is a murloc cook found around the lower exterior section of the Defias ship. He can be killed before or after VanCleef depending on the route.

His most interesting Forever rewards include:

Specific Deadmines drops are not guaranteed. Items such as Cruel Barb, Smite's Mighty Hammer or Blackened Defias Armor may require repeated runs.

Blackened Defias Leather Set

The Deadmines is also associated with the five-piece Defias Leather set:

  • Blackened Defias Armor
  • Blackened Defias Belt
  • Blackened Defias Boots
  • Blackened Defias Gloves
  • Blackened Defias Leggings

The current Forever version of Blackened Defias Armor remains a Rare Leather chest and retains the Defias Leather set bonuses.

Different pieces come from different enemies and loot sources, so completing the set can require repeated Deadmines runs.

The Deadmines Quests

The Deadmines is especially valuable for Alliance characters because several early Westfall and Stormwind questlines converge around the dungeon.

QuestLocation / ObjectiveWhy It Matters
The Defias BrotherhoodDefeat Edwin VanCleefFinal stage of the major Westfall Defias storyline and strong Rare quest rewards.
Underground AssaultSneed's ShredderCompletes a Gnomeregan-related objective and offers early gear rewards.
Red Silk BandanasHigh-ranking Defias enemiesProgresses naturally during a full Deadmines clear.
Collecting MemoriesPre-instance mine areaCan be combined with the trip to the dungeon entrance.
Oh Brother...Pre-instance mine areaAnother objective completed around the route toward the instance.
The Unsent LetterStarts from VanCleef's letterBegins a longer Stormwind storyline that continues beyond The Deadmines.

The Defias Brotherhood Quest Chain

The Defias Brotherhood is the central Westfall storyline leading to The Deadmines.

The chain investigates the identity of the Defias leadership, follows messages and agents through Westfall and Redridge, escorts a Defias traitor to the hidden entrance, and finally sends the player into The Deadmines to kill Edwin VanCleef.

The final quest rewards a choice between:

  • Chausses of Westfall
  • Tunic of Westfall
  • Staff of Westfall

These Rare rewards make the quest one of the strongest reasons for an Alliance character to complete The Deadmines during the appropriate level range.

Underground Assault

Underground Assault sends players after the Gnoam Sprecklesprocket carried by Sneed's Shredder.

The quest connects The Deadmines with the gnomes' attempt to reclaim Gnomeregan and rewards a choice between early equipment including the Sable Wand.

Red Silk Bandanas

Red Silk Bandanas requires ten bandanas from high-ranking Defias members.

Because these enemies are already distributed throughout The Deadmines, the objective progresses naturally during a full clear and requires little additional route deviation.

The Unsent Letter

After defeating Edwin VanCleef, the character can obtain An Unsent Letter addressed to Baros Alexston, Stormwind's City Architect.

The letter begins a larger Stormwind storyline and provides additional context about VanCleef, his former relationship with Stormwind and the continuing Defias conspiracy.

Where Is The Deadmines Entrance?

The Deadmines is located beneath Moonbrook in southwestern Westfall.

Enter the large Defias-controlled building in Moonbrook and follow the underground mine system. The route passes through an undead-infested pre-instance section before eventually reaching the actual dungeon portal.

Alliance characters have easy access through Westfall and Sentinel Hill. Horde characters can physically reach the dungeon, but the major Deadmines questlines are strongly Alliance-focused.
