Buy our WoW Forever The Drowned City Boost to complete the level 35-40 dungeon off the coast of Stranglethorn Vale with an organized group. Explore ancient troll ruins reclaimed from the sea, fight Naga, Makrura, undead guardians and other threats, defeat documented encounters such as Zul'Alai and Min'loth the Serpent, and progress through one of WoW Forever's completely new mid-level dungeons.

The Drowned City is an ancient troll settlement that disappeared beneath the ocean and has now become accessible again. Its flooded halls, submerged chambers, open ruined plazas and hostile sea creatures create a very different experience from traditional land-based dungeons such as Scarlet Monastery or Razorfen Downs.

What Is The Drowned City?

The Drowned City is built around an old Warcraft mystery: an ancient troll civilization swallowed by the sea.

The ruins lie near Stranglethorn Vale, a region historically dominated by Gurubashi troll history. The city has returned from beneath the ocean, exposing structures, flooded corridors and ancient threats that had remained inaccessible for generations.

The dungeon combines several distinct environments:

  • Ancient troll architecture connected with the history of Stranglethorn.
  • Flooded chambers and underwater sections that can be explored directly.
  • Open ruined areas where groups have more freedom to choose their route.
  • Naga occupation within the recovered city.
  • Pirate activity around the ruins.
  • Undead troll guardians still protecting parts of the ancient settlement.

This makes The Drowned City one of the most visually and mechanically distinctive dungeons in the level-35-to-40 range.

The Lost City of I'lalai and Min'loth

The Drowned City also connects with one of the oldest troll legends found in Classic World of Warcraft.

The Third Troll Legend describes the fall of I'lalai, an ancient Gurubashi city associated with the powerful troll sorcerer Min'loth the Serpent.

According to the legend, Min'loth attempted to bind enormous sea creatures with magic. His spell ultimately failed, and the ocean overwhelmed I'lalai, leaving the city beneath the waves.

Min'loth the Serpent is now one of the documented encounters inside The Drowned City. This creates a direct connection between a story that existed in the original Stranglethorn lore and the new dungeon content introduced in WoW Forever.

The Drowned City Layout

The Drowned City does not follow a completely linear corridor structure.

The early route begins more directly but later opens into a much larger area where the group can choose which packs and encounters to approach first.

This matters because enemy groups can be positioned close together. Poor pulls can cause multiple packs or patrols to enter combat at once, significantly increasing pressure on the tank and healer.

The dungeon also contains an important underwater section. Players can dive below the surface and reach encounters that are not necessarily placed on the same direct land route.

Documented Bosses in The Drowned City

BossEncounterWhy It Matters
Zul'AlaiEarly major encounterBecomes substantially more dangerous near low health due to a powerful enrage.
Zin'akaWater-area encounterCan be reached through the underwater section and puts significant pressure on the tank.
Deathless MarrowUndead / ancient-city encounterHeavy-hitting encounter deeper within the ruins.
Min'loth the SerpentAncient troll encounterDirectly connects the dungeon with the old legend of the drowned troll city.

The dungeon contains additional encounters beyond the currently documented bosses. The exact final boss order and complete loot distribution should be taken from the current in-game version rather than assumed from early dungeon information.

Zul'Alai

Zul'Alai is one of the first major encounters groups can reach inside The Drowned City.

The most important feature of the fight is the boss's strong low-health enrage. Groups should avoid reaching the final part of the encounter with the healer already low on mana or the tank without defensive resources.

Saving cooldowns for the final phase can be more valuable than using every ability immediately at the beginning of the fight.

Zin'aka

Zin'aka is associated with the dungeon's underwater section and can be reached relatively early depending on the chosen route.

The encounter is especially dangerous for tanks because of high incoming damage. Healers should enter the fight with sufficient mana rather than immediately pulling the boss after a difficult trash pack.

The ability to approach Zin'aka through the water also demonstrates one of The Drowned City's defining features: the dungeon allows more route flexibility than a simple corridor instance.

Deathless Marrow

Deathless Marrow is encountered deeper within the ancient city and represents the undead side of the dungeon's enemy roster.

The fight has been noted for heavy tank damage, making defensive cooldowns and healer preparation particularly important.

Groups should also be cautious when approaching the encounter because the surrounding dungeon contains tightly positioned enemy packs that can quickly overwhelm an unprepared party.

Min'loth the Serpent

Min'loth the Serpent is one of the most important lore encounters in The Drowned City.

Min'loth was already named in old Gurubashi legends as the troll sorcerer connected with the destruction of the drowned city of I'lalai. Bringing him into the dungeon turns an obscure piece of Classic-era worldbuilding into an actual group encounter.

This makes Min'loth particularly interesting for players who enjoy the deeper history of Stranglethorn Vale rather than treating the dungeon only as a leveling destination.

Enemies Inside The Drowned City

The dungeon contains several distinct enemy groups, requiring parties to adjust their approach as they move between flooded ruins and open areas.

Enemy TypeRole in the Dungeon
NagaOne of the primary factions occupying the risen troll ruins.
PiratesCompete for access to the newly exposed city and its treasures.
MakruraAquatic enemies commonly encountered around the flooded sections.
Risen SentriesUndead defenders associated with the ancient troll city.
Deathless SorcerersCaster enemies that increase the danger of tightly packed pulls.
Deathless GuardiansDurable undead enemies protecting deeper portions of the ruins.

The combination of caster enemies, durable melee mobs and dangerous patrols makes pull control important. An organized group can avoid unnecessary packs and reduce the risk of multiple enemies joining the same fight.

The Drowned City Loot and Rewards

The Drowned City occupies an important gearing point between the early-30 dungeon bracket and the progression toward level 40.

Characters entering around level 35 may still be wearing items from Gnomeregan, Razorfen Kraul or early Scarlet Monastery wings. Dungeon rewards from The Drowned City can therefore provide useful replacements while preparing the character for Razorfen Downs, Scarlet Monastery Armory and Cathedral, Krol'dok Stronghold and Zul'Farrak.

Upgrade GoalWhy It Matters
Weapon UpgradeWeapon improvements can significantly increase leveling speed for physical classes.
Tank GearAdditional armor and Stamina help with hard-hitting dungeon encounters.
Healer GearMana and healing-oriented upgrades become more important as dungeon fights become longer.
Caster GearIntellect and spell-oriented equipment improves damage and mana efficiency.
Physical DPS GearStrength, Agility and stronger weapons support the transition toward level 40.

Specific items are not guaranteed. The exact boss-to-item loot tables should be based on the current in-game dungeon data.

Where Is The Drowned City?

The Drowned City is located off the coast of Stranglethorn Vale in the Eastern Kingdoms.

This location fits naturally with the dungeon's Gurubashi history because Stranglethorn contains many of Azeroth's oldest troll ruins and stories.

The exact route to the dungeon entrance should follow the current in-game map and associated quest progression. Players should not rely on unrelated older locations that also use “drowned city” terminology.
