Scarlet Monastery, commonly shortened to SM, is one of the most important multi-wing dungeon complexes in WoW Forever. Located in northeastern Tirisfal Glades, the monastery is controlled by the fanatical Scarlet Crusade and covers character progression from approximately level 30 through 46.

Scarlet Monastery Dungeon Overview

Scarlet Monastery is divided into four separate dungeon wings. Each wing has its own level range, bosses, loot table and progression purpose.

This makes Scarlet Monastery different from a normal linear dungeon. A level-33 caster may primarily need Library, while a physical level-40 character might focus on Herod in Armory or Mograine and Whitemane in Cathedral.

Scarlet Monastery Story

Scarlet Monastery was once a religious center devoted to the Holy Light. After the fall of Lordaeron and the spread of the undead Scourge, the location became one of the primary strongholds of the Scarlet Crusade.

The Crusade claims to fight undeath, but its members became increasingly fanatical and began treating outsiders as potential carriers of the plague. Humans who did not belong to their order could be viewed as enemies just as readily as actual undead.

By the time players enter Scarlet Monastery, the complex functions as a military, religious and ideological center for the Crusade. Its four wings represent different parts of that organization: burial grounds, preserved knowledge, military training and the cathedral leadership itself.

Scarlet Monastery Graveyard – Level 30-38

Scarlet Monastery Graveyard is the first and lowest-level wing. The majority of its enemies are undead rather than living Scarlet Crusaders, making the atmosphere substantially different from the later wings.

The Graveyard is relatively short and is useful for early SM progression, fast boss kills and attempts at its rare encounters.

Azshir, Fallen Champion and Ironspine are rare encounters and are not guaranteed to appear during every dungeon reset.

Scarlet Monastery Library – Level 33-41

Scarlet Monastery Library is one of the most important wings because it combines strong caster loot with the permanent progression item required for the later sections of the complex.

The wing contains two primary bosses: Houndmaster Loksey and Arcanist Doan.

Houndmaster Loksey

Houndmaster Loksey fights alongside Scarlet tracking hounds and is one of the targets required by the major faction quests that span multiple Scarlet Monastery wings.

The encounter emphasizes add management: killing or controlling the hounds reduces pressure on the tank and healer before the group focuses fully on Loksey.

Arcanist Doan

Arcanist Doan is the final boss of Library and one of the most important bosses in the entire complex for caster gearing.

His current Forever loot includes two iconic items:

• Hypnotic Blade – one-handed caster dagger with Intellect, Spirit and bonus spell damage/healing.
• Illusionary Rod – two-handed staff with Stamina, Intellect and Spirit.

After defeating Doan, players can also obtain one of Scarlet Monastery's most important progression items.

How to Get the Scarlet Key

The Scarlet Key is found in Doan's Strongbox at the end of the Library wing.

Its main uses are:

• Opening access to Scarlet Monastery Armory.
• Opening access to Scarlet Monastery Cathedral.
• Providing access connected with the Scarlet Bastion in Stratholme.

For a character planning to complete all Scarlet Monastery wings, Library is therefore an important early step. Once the Scarlet Key has been obtained, later Armory and Cathedral farming becomes substantially more convenient.

Scarlet Monastery Armory – Level 36-44

Scarlet Monastery Armory is the military wing of the complex. It contains dense groups of Scarlet soldiers and culminates in a fight against Herod, the Scarlet Champion.

The wing is particularly attractive to physical DPS characters because Herod's loot table contains several of Scarlet Monastery's most recognizable melee rewards.

Herod

Herod is the only major boss of Armory, but his loot table makes repeated runs worthwhile.

His most recognizable mechanic is Whirlwind. Melee characters should move away while the spinning attack is active rather than remaining inside the damage area.

After Herod is defeated, Scarlet Trainees enter the chamber, providing an additional thematic ending to the encounter.

Scarlet Monastery Cathedral – Level 38-46

Scarlet Monastery Cathedral is the highest-level wing and contains the leadership of the monastery. It is generally shorter than some earlier wings but has one of the highest concentrations of valuable boss loot.

The primary encounters are Scarlet Commander Mograine and High Inquisitor Whitemane. High Inquisitor Fairbanks is hidden in a side chamber and provides an additional optional encounter.

The Cathedral finale is a linked two-character encounter.

Players first defeat Scarlet Commander Mograine. After Mograine falls, High Inquisitor Whitemane enters the fight. During the scripted encounter, Whitemane puts the party to sleep and resurrects Mograine, forcing the group to finish the battle after his return.

Because the interior of the Cathedral contains many tightly packed Scarlet enemies, the room should be cleared carefully before engaging the bosses. Fleeing enemies can otherwise bring additional packs into the encounter.

High Inquisitor Fairbanks

High Inquisitor Fairbanks is hidden inside a secret side room within the Cathedral.

Fairbanks is particularly important to the wider Scarlet Crusade and Ashbringer storyline. He witnessed the betrayal of Highlord Alexandros Mograine and later attempted to expose what had happened.

Groups interested in full Cathedral progression, story or his loot should include the optional room instead of heading directly to Mograine and Whitemane.

No specific boss drop is guaranteed. Players targeting Ravager, Illusionary Rod, Whitemane's Chapeau, Aegis of the Scarlet Commander or another individual item may require repeated runs.

Chain of the Scarlet Crusade Set

Scarlet Monastery is also the home of the six-piece Chain of the Scarlet Crusade set.

The set consists of:

• Scarlet Belt
• Scarlet Boots
• Scarlet Chestpiece
• Scarlet Gauntlets
• Scarlet Leggings
• Scarlet Wristguards

Pieces can come from different Scarlet Monastery enemies and bosses, making the entire complex relevant to players who want to collect multiple parts instead of farming one specific boss.

Because the pieces are random drops, completing the full set can require repeated runs across several wings.

Scarlet Monastery Quests

One of the biggest advantages of an All Wings run is the ability to combine several quests and boss objectives in the same monastery progression.

Into The Scarlet Monastery – Horde Quest

Into The Scarlet Monastery is one of the most important Horde quests connected with the entire dungeon complex.

It requires the player to defeat:

• Herod in Armory
• Scarlet Commander Mograine in Cathedral
• High Inquisitor Whitemane in Cathedral

The current Forever quest rewards include a choice between:

Alliance Scarlet Monastery Progression

Alliance characters also have major quest progression connected with Scarlet Monastery. The classic In the Name of the Light objective sends players against Houndmaster Loksey, Herod, Scarlet Commander Mograine and High Inquisitor Whitemane.

Where Is Scarlet Monastery?

Scarlet Monastery is located in the northeastern corner of Tirisfal Glades in the Eastern Kingdoms.

The monastery is naturally easier for Horde characters to reach because Undercity and Tirisfal Glades are nearby. Alliance groups usually travel through the northern Eastern Kingdoms to reach the complex.

Once inside the monastery's main entrance hall, players can choose the individual wing required for the run.

Scarlet Monastery in WoW Forever Progression

The four wings allow Scarlet Monastery to remain relevant through a much wider level range than most individual dungeons.
