The Temple of Atal'Hakkar, commonly known as the Sunken Temple or simply ST, is one of the most complex returning Classic dungeons in WoW Forever. Its multi-level structure combines Atal'ai troll rituals, puzzle-based boss access, Green Dragonflight encounters, class-specific objectives and several bosses that require earlier dungeon actions before they can be fought.

Temple of Atal'Hakkar Dungeon Overview

The Temple of Atal'Hakkar is a 5-player dungeon inside the Swamp of Sorrows in the Eastern Kingdoms. In WoW Forever, it sits in the level 50-55 progression bracket between Maraudon and the first major level-60 transition dungeons.

Sunken Temple is considerably less linear than most dungeons. Several encounters must be unlocked, some objectives are located on different levels, and a group that enters without knowing which quests or bosses it needs can spend significantly more time navigating the instance.

Temple of Atal'Hakkar Story

The temple was created by the Atal'ai, a fanatical sect of Gurubashi trolls devoted to Hakkar the Soulflayer.

The Atal'ai believed that summoning Hakkar into Azeroth would grant their people immortality. Their attempt alarmed the Green Dragonflight, whose duty included protecting the natural world and the Emerald Dream.

Ysera ultimately acted against the trolls and caused the temple to sink beneath the Pool of Tears in the Swamp of Sorrows.

The destruction did not end the threat. Surviving Atal'ai continued their rituals inside the submerged temple, while members of the Green Dragonflight became trapped or corrupted within its depths.

By the time players enter the dungeon, Jammal'an the Prophet is still working toward Hakkar's return, while the powerful green dragon Eranikus remains imprisoned within the temple.

Atal'alarion and the Statue Puzzle

Atal'alarion is the Guardian of the Idol at the bottom of the temple. Unlike a normal boss, he must be activated by solving the shrine puzzle on the lower level.

The six statues are activated in the classic sequence:

  1. South
  2. North
  3. Southwest
  4. Southeast
  5. Northwest
  6. Northeast

Completing the sequence correctly summons Atal'alarion in the central pit.

The encounter is also important for Druids working on A Better Ingredient, which requires the Putrid Vine from the guardian at the bottom of Sunken Temple.

The Six Atal'ai Troll Guardians

The upper temple contains six named Atal'ai guardians:

  • Gasher
  • Mijan
  • Zolo
  • Hukku
  • Zul'Lor
  • Loro

These encounters are unusually important because killing all six removes the magical barrier preventing access to Jammal'an the Prophet.

They are also objectives for several level-50 class quests. Warriors, Paladins, Shamans and Warlocks all have quest progression involving the Voodoo Feathers carried by these guardians.

Jammal'an the Prophet and Ogom the Wretched

Jammal'an the Prophet is the spiritual leader of the Atal'ai and one of the central antagonists of the dungeon.

He believes Hakkar's return will grant immortality to his tribe and continues the rituals responsible for the danger surrounding the temple.

Jammal'an cannot normally be reached until the six Atal'ai guardians around the upper level have been defeated.

During the encounter he fights alongside Ogom the Wretched. Jammal'an can use dangerous control effects while Ogom adds Shadow damage and additional pressure to the group.

Jammal'an the Prophet Quest

The current Forever quest Jammal'an the Prophet sends players to bring Jammal'an's head to the Atal'ai Exile in the Hinterlands.

The reward choice includes:

This gives the Jammal'an route deterministic quest value even when the desired random boss item does not drop.

Morphaz and the Level-50 Class Quests

Morphaz is one of the most important individual bosses in the dungeon because several different class quest chains send players directly to him.

ClassTemple QuestMain Objective
HunterThe Green DrakeRecover the Tooth of Morphaz.
MageDestroy MorphazRecover the Arcane Shard from Morphaz.
PriestBlood of MorphazRecover Morphaz's blood.
RogueThe Azure KeyRecover the Azure Key from Morphaz.

Because several classes share the same boss objective, Morphaz-focused runs can be particularly efficient for a prepared group.

Hunter – The Green Drake

The current Forever quest The Green Drake requires the Hunter to defeat Morphaz and return his tooth to Ogtinc.

Reward choices include:

  • Hunting Spear
  • Devilsaur Eye
  • Devilsaur Tooth

Mage – Destroy Morphaz

Destroy Morphaz sends Mages into Sunken Temple to recover an Arcane Shard.

Reward choices include:

  • Glacial Spike
  • Arcane Crystal Pendant
  • Fire Ruby

Priest – Blood of Morphaz

The Priest quest Blood of Morphaz requires the green dragon's blood for the Cenarion Circle.

Reward choices include:

  • Blessed Prayer Beads
  • Woestave
  • Circle of Hope

Rogue – The Azure Key

The Rogue quest The Azure Key sends the player to recover a key held by Morphaz.

Reward choices include:

  • Ebon Mask
  • Whisperwalk Boots
  • Duskbat Drape

Avatar of Hakkar

Avatar of Hakkar is not simply standing on the normal dungeon route. It is a special event associated with The God Hakkar.

The current Forever quest The God Hakkar provides an Egg of Hakkar that is used in the Sanctum of the Fallen God.

The encounter begins as an event rather than a normal boss pull. Hakkari enemies attack the group, and the party must use their blood to extinguish the four eternal flames before the Avatar can fully manifest.

After all four flames are extinguished, the Avatar becomes available for the actual boss fight.

Players who have already completed the chain can also obtain the reusable summoning access associated with Yeh'kinya, allowing later Hakkar-focused runs.

The God Hakkar Quest Rewards

Completing the classic Forever version of The God Hakkar provides a choice between:

  • Avenguard Helm
  • Lifeforce Dirk
  • Gemburst Circlet

The boss event is therefore useful both for its own loot table and for one of the dungeon's longest neutral quest chains.

Warrior's EmbraceWarrior, Paladin and physical Plate usersPlate chest with Stamina, Agility and additional dodge chance.
Embrace of the Wind SerpentCloth mana usersExtremely rare cloth robe with Intellect, Spirit and Nature Resistance.

Specific Hakkar rewards are not guaranteed. Embrace of the Wind Serpent is particularly rare and should never be represented as an expected reward from a single run.

Shade of Eranikus

Shade of Eranikus is one of the most important final targets inside the Temple of Atal'Hakkar.

Eranikus is a powerful member of the Green Dragonflight trapped within the temple. The encounter ties the Atal'ai storyline directly to Ysera, the Emerald Dream and the dragonflight's efforts to contain the consequences of Hakkar's worship.

Groups should clear the relevant dragonkin around the lower chamber before engaging him. Eranikus can call nearby creatures into the fight, turning an otherwise controlled boss pull into a wipe if the room is not prepared properly.

He also uses a sleep effect that can disrupt tank threat, making threat management more important than on many earlier dungeon bosses.

Dragon's Call is one of the iconic rare weapons associated with Sunken Temple, but its drop is not guaranteed and may require repeated Eranikus kills.
