Zul'Farrak, commonly shortened to ZF, is one of the most distinctive returning Classic dungeons in WoW Forever. Unlike most underground instances, Zul'Farrak is a large open-air troll city with multiple optional routes, quest bosses, rare encounters, a scripted staircase event and several rewards that remain useful well beyond a single dungeon clear.

What Is Zul'Farrak?
Zul'Farrak is the city of the Sandfury trolls, built into the desert of Tanaris northwest of Gadgetzan.
The Sandfury have protected their city through brutal combat, troll mysticism and alliances with dangerous creatures. The ruins contain sacred shrines, burial grounds, a holy pool and the imprisoned adventurers involved in the dungeon's famous staircase event.
Zul'Farrak is especially important because several independent storylines meet inside the dungeon: the prophecy of Mosh'aru, the legend of Sul'thraze, the imprisonment of Sergeant Bly's group and the summoning of the giant hydra Gahz'rilla.
Zul'Farrak Bosses
| Boss / Encounter | Type | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Antu'sul | Sandfury beastmaster | Source of Sang'thraze the Deflector and The Hand of Antu'sul. |
| Theka the Martyr | Undead troll | Carries one of the tablets required for The Prophecy of Mosh'aru. |
| Witch Doctor Zum'rah | Necromancer | Source of Zum'rah's Vexing Cane and graveyard-related loot. |
| Hydromancer Velratha | Water caster | Quest target for Tiara of the Deep and the second Mosh'aru tablet. |
| Gahz'rilla | Summoned hydra | Required for the famous Carrot on a Stick quest. |
| Pyramid Event | Scripted multi-wave encounter | Includes Nekrum Gutchewer and Shadowpriest Sezz'ziz. |
| Sergeant Bly | Freed adventurer / quest encounter | Required for the Divino-matic Rod quest after the staircase event. |
| Chief Ukorz Sandscalp & Ruuzlu | Final encounter | Source of Jang'thraze and several important level-40 Rare items. |
Antu'sul
Antu'sul controls the Sul'lithuz basilisk area and can summon additional creatures during the fight. Totems and healing effects should be dealt with quickly to prevent the encounter from becoming unnecessarily long.
Antu'sul is particularly important because he can drop:
- Sang'thraze the Deflector – one of the two swords required for Sul'thraze.
- The Hand of Antu'sul – one-handed mace with a multi-target Nature-damage effect.
- Lifeblood Amulet – defensive necklace with Stamina and Spirit.
Theka the Martyr
Theka the Martyr guards part of the ancient Sandfury burial area.
He is particularly important for The Prophecy of Mosh'aru. Theka carries the First Mosh'aru Tablet, while the second tablet comes from Hydromancer Velratha.
During combat Theka can transform as his health becomes low and becomes more resistant to certain damage types, making the final portion of the encounter different from a normal troll caster fight.
Witch Doctor Zum'rah
Witch Doctor Zum'rah occupies the graveyard section of Zul'Farrak and uses necromantic magic together with nearby undead.
His signature current Forever weapon is:
Zum'rah's Vexing Cane – a two-handed caster staff with Stamina, Intellect and additional spell damage and healing.
This makes Zum'rah particularly relevant to Mage, Priest, Warlock, Druid and other caster-oriented characters progressing through the 40s.
Hydromancer Velratha
Hydromancer Velratha patrols around the sacred pool near the Gahz'rilla area.
She is required for two major quest objectives:
- Tiara of the Deep – recover Tabetha's stolen tiara.
- The Prophecy of Mosh'aru – obtain the Second Mosh'aru Tablet.
Because both objectives can be completed from the same boss, players preparing a Quest Run should have the relevant chains active before entering Zul'Farrak.
How to Summon Gahz'rilla
Gahz'rilla is an optional summoned boss rather than a normal encounter automatically available during every route.
The classic summoning method uses the Mallet of Zul'Farrak. The mallet is prepared through outdoor progression in the Hinterlands and then used at the gong beside Gahz'rilla's sacred pool.
Only the required group access needs to be available to activate the encounter; every player does not need a separate mallet.
Gahz'rilla and Carrot on a Stick
The current Forever quest Gahz'rilla requires the boss's Electrified Scale.
The reward is the famous Carrot on a Stick.
The trinket increases mounted movement speed by 3%, making it one of the most recognizable utility rewards associated with Classic-era dungeon progression.
The boss itself uses Frost attacks and a powerful knock-up effect, so players should be prepared for fall damage after being launched into the air.
The Zul'Farrak Pyramid Event
The pyramid or staircase event is one of the defining encounters of Zul'Farrak.
At the top of the pyramid, the group finds several imprisoned adventurers including Sergeant Bly. After they are released, waves of Sandfury enemies attack from below.
The group fights down the staircase while the rescued NPCs assist.
Important enemies during the event include:
- Nekrum Gutchewer
- Shadowpriest Sezz'ziz
- multiple Sandfury troll waves
The event is required for several Zul'Farrak quests and provides access to some of the dungeon's best caster loot.
Shadowpriest Sezz'ziz Loot
Shadowpriest Sezz'ziz appears as part of the pyramid progression and is particularly useful to caster and hybrid characters.
- Bad Mojo Mask – cloth headpiece with high Intellect and additional Shadow damage.
- Jinxed Hoodoo Kilt – Leather legs with Intellect and high Spirit.
Sergeant Bly and the Divino-matic Rod
After surviving the pyramid event, players completing Divino-matic Rod can confront Sergeant Bly.
The current quest Divino-matic Rod requires the stolen rod to be returned to Chief Engineer Bilgewhizzle in Gadgetzan.
The quest offers a choice between:
- Masons Fraternity Ring
- Engineer's Guild Headpiece
This provides a deterministic reward in addition to normal dungeon loot.
Chief Ukorz Sandscalp and Ruuzlu
Chief Ukorz Sandscalp and Ruuzlu form the principal final encounter of Zul'Farrak.
Both enemies become more dangerous if the other dies first, so tanks and damage dealers should be prepared for an enrage-style increase in pressure near the end of the fight.
Ukorz is especially important because his loot table contains the second half needed for Zul'Farrak's signature weapon.
How to Get Sul'thraze the Lasher
Sul'thraze the Lasher is created by combining two Rare swords from Zul'Farrak:
| Sword | Source |
|---|---|
| Sang'thraze the Deflector | Antu'sul |
| Jang'thraze the Protector | Chief Ukorz Sandscalp |
Once both halves are obtained they can be combined into the two-handed Sul'thraze the Lasher.
Neither sword is guaranteed. Players targeting Sul'thraze should expect that repeated Antu'sul and Ukorz kills may be required.

| Big Bad Pauldrons | Chief Ukorz Sandscalp | Plate melee characters | Strength and Stamina on a Rare plate shoulder piece. |

Important Zul'Farrak Quests
| Quest | Main Objective | Main Value |
|---|---|---|
| Troll Temper | Collect Troll Temper from Sandfury enemies | Additional XP while clearing the dungeon. |
| Scarab Shells | Collect Uncracked Scarab Shells | Gadgetzan reputation and XP. |
| Tiara of the Deep | Defeat Hydromancer Velratha | Choice of equipment rewards. |
| The Prophecy of Mosh'aru | Recover tablets from Theka and Velratha | Major Hakkar-related quest chain. |
| Divino-matic Rod | Recover the rod from Sergeant Bly | Equipment reward and Gadgetzan reputation. |
| Gahz'rilla | Recover Gahz'rilla's Electrified Scale | Carrot on a Stick. |
| Nekrum's Medallion | Defeat Nekrum during the pyramid event | Alliance quest-chain progression. |
The Prophecy of Mosh'aru
The Prophecy of Mosh'aru is particularly important because it connects Zul'Farrak with the larger storyline surrounding Hakkar.
The quest requires:
- First Mosh'aru Tablet from Theka the Martyr
- Second Mosh'aru Tablet from Hydromancer Velratha
The storyline later continues beyond Zul'Farrak and ultimately connects with the Temple of Atal'Hakkar.
Who Should Run Zul'Farrak?
| Player Goal | Why Zul'Farrak Helps |
|---|---|
| Level 40-47 Progression | Large dungeon with many enemies, bosses and quests. |
| Physical Weapons | Sul'thraze parts and The Hand of Antu'sul provide valuable weapon targets. |
| Caster Gear | Zum'rah's Vexing Cane and Bad Mojo Mask provide strong caster progression. |
| Mount Utility | Gahz'rilla quest rewards Carrot on a Stick. |
| Quest Stacking | Multiple neutral and faction quests can be progressed during one full clear. |
| Hakkar Storyline | The Mosh'aru tablets connect Zul'Farrak with later troll and Hakkar content. |

Where Is Zul'Farrak?
Zul'Farrak is located in northwestern Tanaris, west of Gadgetzan.
The entrance leads directly into the Sandfury city rather than into an underground cave system. Much of the dungeon takes place outdoors, giving Zul'Farrak a much more open layout than most instances in the same level range.
Gadgetzan is the natural preparation hub because several Zul'Farrak quests begin or end there.
