Star Citizen Day of the Vara 2956: All Rewards, Masks and How to Get Them

Star Citizen Day of the Vara 2956: All Rewards, Masks and How to Get Them

Day of the Vara 2956 brings two free Halloween participation rewards to Star Citizen: the Vanduul Mask for completing two rounds of Kill Collector in Arena Commander, and The Hill Horror helmet for submitting a qualifying pumpkin to the community contest. There are also three lifetime-insurance ship prize packages up for grabs, new monster-themed ship paints, returning horror cosmetics and October subscriber items. The event began on October 21 and runs through November 9, 2026, during the Alpha 4.10.2 LIVE period. The important distinction is that not everything advertised for Day of the Vara can be earned through gameplay. Some items require event participation, some are judged contest prizes, and others are paid store cosmetics. Here is what you can actually claim, what you need to do and which deadlines matter.

Short answer: Complete two rounds of Arena Commander's Kill Collector mode to qualify for the free Vanduul Mask, which will be distributed after the event. Submit an eligible real-pumpkin entry by November 9, 2026, at 20:00 UTC to qualify for The Hill Horror helmet and a chance at one of three LTI ship prize packages.

Day of the Vara 2956 Dates and Reward Overview

Cloud Imperium Games launched Day of the Vara 2956 on October 21, 2026, with the event running until November 9, 2026. You can find the seasonal announcement on the official Day of the Vara 2956 page. The pumpkin contest has a precisely stated closing time of 20:00 UTC on November 9; do not assume that every event activity or store offer uses that same hour.

If you only care about items earned without making an RSI purchase, concentrate on the first two rows. Neither requires buying a ship, and the pumpkin contest does not require a pledge to enter. The three ship packages are a separate prize pool reserved for judged winners, not a reward handed to everyone who uploads a pumpkin.

How to Get the Vanduul Mask in Day of the Vara 2956

The Vanduul Mask is the simpler of the two free rewards. The 2956 requirement is tied to Kill Collector, an FPS mode in Arena Commander. You need to play and finish two rounds. CIG clarified the participation requirement after players interpreted the original wording as a demand to survive without dying or finish near the top of the scoreboard. Neither a top-three placement nor a flawless run is required.

  1. Launch Star Citizen and enter Arena Commander.
  2. Find the FPS Kill Collector event mode when it is available in the mode selection.
  3. Join a round and remain in the match until it finishes.
  4. Complete a second round of Kill Collector before the event ends.
  5. Wait for the post-event reward distribution rather than expecting the mask to appear immediately.

There is no special ship to fly and no Persistent Universe mission chain to unlock for this reward. That is worth emphasizing because previous Day of the Vara celebrations used different mask-hunting objectives, including loot searches and PvP-related challenges. Those older instructions are not the qualification method for the 2956 Kill Collector reward.

The mode's availability can also be confusing. Arena Commander has rotating and experimental playlists, so if Kill Collector is missing from the menu, check the active event schedule and try again when the correct playlist is available. Joining a different FPS mode or playing two ship-combat matches should not be treated as an equivalent. If the interface behaves unexpectedly, complete the actual Kill Collector matches when accessible and keep your own record of participation.

Important: The Vanduul Mask is scheduled for distribution after Day of the Vara ends. Not seeing it in your account hangar immediately after the second match does not, by itself, mean you failed to qualify.

The reward is primarily about collecting a recognizable seasonal appearance. It should not be confused with an entire protective Star Citizen armor set, and the event does not advertise the mask as a shortcut to better FPS equipment. Get it for the look and the account collection, not because you expect it to improve your combat performance.

How to Earn The Hill Horror Helmet

The Hill Horror helmet comes from an entirely different activity: the 2026 Pumpkin Decorating Contest. CIG's seasonal announcement identifies it as the participation reward for qualifying entries. The contest itself also offers much larger prizes to its three winners, but you do not need to win the judging to qualify for the helmet.

There is one catch that matters more than artistic skill: the submission has to follow the actual contest rules. A polished digital illustration will not count, and neither will a pumpkin image created with AI. CIG requires a real pumpkin that you personally carved and/or painted, along with evidence showing your work. Physical decorations and lighting can be used, but they do not replace the requirement for an actual carved or painted pumpkin.

  1. Choose one of the three accepted monster themes: Frankenstein, Vampire or Werewolf.
  2. Use a real pumpkin and carve and/or paint it to match your chosen theme.
  3. Take at least one photograph or video of the work in progress, not just the finished result.
  4. Photograph or record the completed pumpkin without using AI generation or image post-processing effects.
  5. Submit the images or video to the Day of the Vara 2956 Community Hub event page.
  6. Make sure the entry is submitted before November 9, 2026, at 20:00 UTC.

You may submit more than one original entry, but group entries are not permitted. You must submit your own work through an eligible RSI account, and contestants must be at least 18 years old and reside somewhere participation is legally allowed. Entries submitted late are invalid, and editing an entry after the deadline without RSI's express written approval also makes it invalid. The official 2026 Pumpkin Decorating Contest rules contain the full eligibility, ownership and submission requirements.

My advice is to take the process photos as you work, even if you think the pumpkin will turn out badly. Forgetting that one requirement is an easy way to turn an otherwise valid entry into a problem. Also, do not wait until the final evening to upload everything. The submission window is measured in UTC, not your local time zone, and a late post is invalid regardless of how good the pumpkin looks.

The Three LTI Ship Prizes: What Contest Winners Receive

The pumpkin contest has three winning entries, with one winner selected from each of the Frankenstein, Vampire and Werewolf themes. CIG judges eligible submissions on qualities that include creativity, execution and compliance with the rules. The winners are selected on or by November 16, 2026, with notifications scheduled by November 23.

Each winner gets to choose one of three ship prize packages. The choice is not restricted to the ship associated with the theme they entered: according to the published rules, a winner from each theme may select one of the three available packages.

Ship prize packages available to Day of the Vara 2956 pumpkin contest winners
ShipIncluded themed paintAdditional prize items
Drake VultureFrankenstein-themed paintLifetime insurance and a mask bundle
Kruger L-22 Alpha WolfWerewolf-themed paintLifetime insurance and a mask bundle
Aegis EclipseVampire-themed paintLifetime insurance and a mask bundle

These prizes are non-giftable and non-upgradable. That distinction matters if you are used to collecting ships as tradeable pledges or planning CCU chains. Winning gives you the specified account prize; it does not provide a freely transferable ship package. Winners must also respond to CIG's prize notification and complete the required confirmation or release process within 48 hours of notification, or they risk forfeiting the prize.

For everyone else, entering is still worthwhile if you want The Hill Horror helmet. Treat the ship contest as a bonus opportunity rather than something you can grind repeatedly until the game eventually awards an LTI Vulture or Eclipse. This is a judged creative competition, not a random ship drop.

Day of the Vara 2956 Ship Paints: New and Returning Designs

The standout cosmetic additions for 2956 are three creature-inspired paints. Each is made for a specific ship family, and the official store names are more useful than informal descriptions such as “the vampire paint” or “the werewolf skin.” These are seasonal store cosmetics, separate from the free Vanduul Mask and pumpkin-entry helmet.

New Creature Feature paints introduced for Day of the Vara 2956
Paint nameCompatible shipTheme
Abomination PaintDrake VultureFrankenstein-inspired creature styling
Desmodus PaintAegis EclipseVampire-inspired styling
Lycan PaintKruger Wolf seriesWerewolf-inspired styling

The paints can also appear as part of a Creature Feature three-paint bundle. Before choosing a bundle, check whether you actually own or intend to use the corresponding hulls. A paint is a cosmetic entitlement, not a ship purchase. If you are comparing Star Citizen ships for their actual roles, remember that the Vulture is a salvage vessel, the Eclipse is a stealth torpedo bomber and the Wolf is a fighter. A Halloween appearance does not change those jobs.

Returning seasonal paint collections broaden the selection. The Black Magic range is listed for the Polaris, Guardian and Sabre. Purple Haze covers the Carrack, Syulen, Terrapin and Zeus Mk II. The larger Ghoulish Green family includes the Buccaneer, Caterpillar, Corsair, Cutlass, Cutter, Dragonfly, Herald, Mule and Vulture.

Some returning collections contain multiple ship-specific paints, so check the included hulls rather than assuming a named collection applies to your whole fleet. Store packages and availability can change during seasonal promotions; the 2956 event announcement establishes the occasion, but the current RSI listing is the place to confirm any purchase terms.

Other Halloween Masks, Helmets and Gear

The two free participation rewards are not the only horror-themed items associated with Day of the Vara. There are also cosmetic masks and equipment offered through the pledge store. It is easy to mix these up when browsing screenshots of players wearing different monster helmets, especially because several designs have appeared in previous Halloween celebrations.

Fieldsbury Dark Bear Helmets

The Fieldsbury Dark Bear Sinister Six-Pack groups six bear-helmet appearances: the standard Fieldsbury Dark Bear Helmet and the Blueberry, Grape, Guava, Lime and Orange variants. These are store items, not six additional 2956 masks earned by completing Kill Collector. The 2026 Arena Commander objective awards the Vanduul Mask specifically; it does not establish a new free collection challenge for every Fieldsbury color.

Parasite Pack

The Parasite Pack is another seasonal store offering, built around the unsettling look of Star Citizen's in-universe horror entertainment. It includes a wearable horror-themed helmet and associated equipment and display items, rather than a new gameplay mission. Check the current product listing for the exact bundle contents and availability before treating any individual prop or weapon as part of your collection.

None of these paid options is required to unlock the Vanduul Mask or to participate in the pumpkin contest. If your goal is specifically to obtain every earnable 2956 Halloween reward, buying store helmets will not bring you any closer to completing those two objectives.

October 2026 Subscriber Rewards and Skeleton Gear

October's subscriber flair also follows the Day of the Vara theme, but it has its own access rules. It should not be counted as another free reward available to every player during the Halloween event. The official October 2026 Subscriber Promotions identify different items for the two subscription tiers.

  • Centurion subscribers: Behring CQ7 “Skullcap” Rifle, a Halloween-styled variant of the CQ7.
  • Imperator subscribers: Virgil ForceFlex “Skeleton” Suit and Doomsday Helmet, plus the Centurion-level CQ7 “Skullcap” Rifle.
  • Subscriber Store: The Skeleton Kit is available as a separate pledge option for subscribers; access to the store is not the same as receiving the kit free.

The CQ7 “Skullcap” belongs in the category of special-edition Star Citizen FPS weapons, while the Skeleton Suit and Doomsday Helmet are wearable equipment. Their subscriber entitlement depends on the promotion's subscription conditions, not on how many Arena Commander matches you finish. If you have no subscription, do not assume the Halloween event itself will add these pieces to your account.

What Should You Do Before November 9?

If you have limited playtime, prioritize the rewards that actually disappear behind participation deadlines. Store browsing can wait until you know which ships and cosmetics interest you, but a missed Kill Collector window or a late pumpkin submission cannot be fixed by buying a different Halloween bundle.

  1. Complete two Kill Collector rounds first. It is the shortest clearly defined route to an account reward, and you do not need to win either match.
  2. Check the Community Hub submission rules. If you want The Hill Horror helmet, choose a valid monster theme and make sure your real-pumpkin project includes process photos.
  3. Submit well before 20:00 UTC on November 9. The contest deadline is explicit, and last-minute upload trouble is an unnecessary risk. Do not edit the entry after the deadline without RSI's permission.
  4. Review the prize choices if you enter. One winner from each theme can select among the three listed LTI ship packages, but every winner receives only one package.
  5. Look at paints and paid masks afterward. Buy only for ships or appearances you actually use, and check the current store listing for terms and availability.

One other thing: this Halloween event is not the new Intersec anti-Vanduul mission content discussed for Alpha 4.10.3. The two share a Vanduul connection in their names, but the Day of the Vara mask challenge is an Arena Commander event activity. You do not need to wait for the 4.10.3 PTU mission pack or farm combat blueprints to qualify.

Day of the Vara 2956 FAQ

A few practical questions keep coming up because the 2956 rewards look similar to items from earlier Halloween events. The answers below apply to the current event rules, not to the mask collection systems used in previous years.

Do You Have to Win Kill Collector to Get the Vanduul Mask?

No. The clarified requirement is to complete two rounds of the FPS Kill Collector mode. You do not need first place, a top-three finish or a deathless match. The reward is delivered after the event, so successful participation does not necessarily produce an immediate inventory notification.

Can You Get The Hill Horror Helmet Without Winning the Contest?

Yes. The helmet is offered to qualifying pumpkin contest participants. Only the three judged winners receive the additional LTI ship, matching paint and mask bundle prize. A valid entry must still satisfy the real-pumpkin, theme, process-photo and submission requirements.

Can You Submit AI-Generated Pumpkin Art?

No. The contest requires a real pumpkin that has been carved and/or painted, and its rules explicitly exclude AI-generated submissions and image post-processing effects. You can use lighting or physical decorations when photographing the finished pumpkin, but you cannot replace the actual craft project with generated artwork.

When Will the Day of the Vara Masks Be Added to Your Account?

The Vanduul Mask is scheduled to be distributed after the event ends. CIG has not given an equally precise public delivery date for every reward category, so do not assume the pumpkin participation helmet and the Arena Commander mask will appear at the same moment. Contest winners are due to be notified by November 23, 2026.

Can You Earn the New Creature Feature Paints Through Gameplay?

The 2956 event presents Abomination, Desmodus and Lycan as seasonal store paints, with corresponding themed paints also included in the contest ship prize choices. Completing Kill Collector does not award a Creature Feature paint pack. The free Arena Commander reward is the Vanduul Mask.

Final Thoughts

Day of the Vara 2956 is refreshingly straightforward once you separate participation rewards from store cosmetics. Two completed Kill Collector rounds qualify you for the Vanduul Mask, while a rule-compliant pumpkin entry puts The Hill Horror helmet within reach. The LTI Vulture, L-22 Alpha Wolf and Eclipse packages are tempting, but they are prizes for three contest winners, not another layer of routine event progression.

The deadline to remember is November 9, 2026, especially the pumpkin contest's 20:00 UTC cutoff. Finish the two Arena Commander rounds, document your pumpkin work properly and submit it in time. After that, the Creature Feature paints, returning masks and subscriber gear are simply choices about which Halloween look you want to keep.
