Heart of Darkness is one of the defining raid reagents of TBC Anniversary Phase 3. It enters the economy with Black Temple and the Battle for Mount Hyjal, then feeds two different gearing plans: the Shadow Resistance equipment used for Mother Shahraz progression and item-level 141 haste crafts for damage dealers and healers. Because the same limited material serves both survival and throughput, a raid should decide where every early Heart goes before anyone crafts an optional upgrade.
The official TBC Anniversary Phase 3 announcement confirms that Black Temple and Mount Hyjal open globally on August 27, 2026. Hearts cannot be stockpiled before those raids are available, but the secondary materials, professions, attunements and loot policy can all be prepared in advance.
What Heart of Darkness Is Used For
Heart of Darkness is a tradable crafting reagent associated with Phase 3 raid content. It is not a currency and is not spent at a vendor by the wearer. A Blacksmith, Leatherworker or Tailor consumes it while making the relevant item. Its 33 TBC recipes divide into 17 Shadow Resistance crafts and 16 item-level 141 haste pieces.
| Recipe group | Number of items | Main purpose | Heart cost pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| Four armor-type Shadow Resistance sets | 16 | Mother Shahraz preparation | 1 for bracers, 2 for belt, 2 for boots and 3 for legs |
| Night's End | 1 | Universal Shadow Resistance cloak | 1 |
| Haste bracers | 8 | Tradable raid-quality throughput gear | 4 each |
| Haste shoulders | 8 | Profession-bound personal upgrades | 2 each |
Do not confuse these recipes with Phase 2 belt and boot crafts that use Nether Vortexes. Heart of Darkness belongs to a separate Phase 3 recipe pool. It also has no role in cutting Epic Gems.
Heart of Darkness Sources
The normal source is raid trash in Black Temple and the Battle for Mount Hyjal. In Hyjal, this means the hostile wave enemies fought before bosses; in Black Temple, it means the regular packs cleared between encounters. There is no outdoor gathering route, daily quest reward, dungeon farm or profession conversion that creates Hearts. A character outside these raids can obtain them only through another player, a guild bank or the Auction House.
| Source | Availability | Practical value | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black Temple trash | After Phase 3 opens and the character has raid access | Hearts can appear while the raid also earns Ashtongue Deathsworn reputation | Weekly lockout and raid progression determine how much trash is reached |
| Mount Hyjal trash waves | After Phase 3 opens and The Vials of Eternity is complete | Repeated waves create many eligible trash kills during normal progression | A failed wave resets encounter progress; drops are not a guaranteed count per run |
| Guild distribution | Depends on the raid's loot rules | Best way to complete a roster-wide Shadow Resistance plan | Requires a published priority rather than personal claims |
| Auction House or direct trade | As soon as raiders list tradable supply | Allows non-raiders and late recruits to buy required crafts | Early prices can be volatile and realm-specific |
There is no responsible fixed drop-per-clear promise. The number varies with random drops, the amount of trash killed and the group's progress. Clearing both raids each reset creates the most natural supply, but resetting trash solely for Hearts should be checked against the live raid-lockout behavior before a group attempts it. Never risk an established progression ID for an unverified farm method.

Fastest Practical Farming Plan
A solo character cannot efficiently farm Hearts at launch. The productive route is organized raid play with an agreed allocation system. Complete both attunements, enter both Tier 6 raids every reset, loot all eligible trash and keep the reagent pool centralized until the raid's Mother Shahraz requirements are covered. If a stable Black Temple roster is the missing part of that plan, a scheduled Black Temple raid run can provide access to the same progression environment in which the reagent and its recipes matter.
- Record every raider who is expected to use Shadow Resistance on Mother Shahraz.
- Mark each character's armor type, profession and current resistance pieces.
- Collect the non-Heart materials before the first Phase 3 reset.
- Clear Mount Hyjal and Black Temple trash through normal progression.
- Deposit Hearts in the guild bank or assign one accountable holder.
- Unlock the required Okuno recipes through Ashtongue Deathsworn reputation.
- Craft the minimum resistance package that reaches the raid's target.
- Only then spend surplus Hearts on haste bracers and shoulders.
For personal farming, compare the Auction House price with the finished item's full cost. Buying a Heart does not solve the recipe, reputation or profession requirement. A buyer should first confirm the crafter, the exact binding rule and every secondary reagent.
All Heart of Darkness Shadow Resistance Crafts
The four armor families use the same resistance and Heart structure. Bracers provide 40 Shadow Resistance for one Heart, belts and boots provide 54 for two Hearts, and legs provide 72 for three Hearts. One complete armor set therefore costs eight Hearts and supplies 220 Shadow Resistance before buffs, enchants or other slots. Night's End adds another universal option for every armor class.
| Armor type | Bracers | Belt | Boots | Legs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cloth | Soulguard Bracers, 1 Heart, 40 SR | Soulguard Girdle, 2 Hearts, 54 SR | Soulguard Slippers, 2 Hearts, 54 SR | Soulguard Leggings, 3 Hearts, 72 SR |
| Leather | Redeemed Soul Wristguards, 1 Heart, 40 SR | Redeemed Soul Cinch, 2 Hearts, 54 SR | Redeemed Soul Moccasins, 2 Hearts, 54 SR | Redeemed Soul Legguards, 3 Hearts, 72 SR |
| Bracers of Shackled Souls, 1 Heart, 40 SR | Waistguard of Shackled Souls, 2 Hearts, 54 SR | Boots of Shackled Souls, 2 Hearts, 54 SR | Greaves of Shackled Souls, 3 Hearts, 72 SR | |
| Plate | Shadesteel Bracers, 1 Heart, 40 SR | Shadesteel Girdle, 2 Hearts, 54 SR | Shadesteel Sabots, 2 Hearts, 54 SR | Shadesteel Greaves, 3 Hearts, 72 SR |
Night's End is a Bind-on-Equip cloak made by Tailoring 375. It gives 40 Shadow Resistance and costs one Heart of Darkness, one Void Crystal, two Primal Life, two Primal Shadow and one Bolt of Imbued Netherweave. Enchant Cloak - Greater Shadow Resistance adds another 15 Shadow Resistance, making the cloak slot especially efficient.
Where the Shadow Resistance Recipes Come From
Okuno, the Ashtongue Deathsworn quartermaster inside Black Temple, sells the Shadow Resistance plans and patterns. The recipes require 375 Blacksmithing, Leatherworking or Tailoring as appropriate. The attunement questline introduces the reputation and normally carries a completed character into Friendly; continued Black Temple kills advance it further. Spirit of Olum can provide access to Okuno after Supremus has been defeated.
| Reputation | Recipes available from Okuno |
|---|---|
| Friendly | Shadesteel Bracers, Shadesteel Girdle, Boots of Shackled Souls, Bracers of Shackled Souls, Redeemed Soul Cinch, Redeemed Soul Legguards, Soulguard Bracers and Soulguard Girdle |
| Honored | Shadesteel Greaves, Shadesteel Sabots, Greaves of Shackled Souls, Waistguard of Shackled Souls, Redeemed Soul Moccasins, Redeemed Soul Wristguards, Soulguard Leggings, Soulguard Slippers and Night's End |
This uneven unlock order matters. A guild may have Hearts and a 375 crafter but still lack the specific recipe it wants. If reaching the required vendor tier is the bottleneck, the Ashtongue Deathsworn reputation service is the relevant option; it targets the reputation behind Okuno's recipes rather than selling the crafted item itself.
How Much Shadow Resistance to Prepare for Mother Shahraz
Mother Shahraz is the seventh Black Temple boss and the main reason raids reserve Hearts for resistance gear. Fatal Attraction moves three players together and deals rapid Shadow damage until they separate. A common progression plan is 244 total Shadow Resistance for affected non-tanks. With the level-70 Priest buff Prayer of Shadow Protection providing 70, that leaves 174 from gear and other personal sources. Treat 174 as a roster planning value, not as a universal hard entry requirement: the raid's strategy, Priest spell rank and appetite for risk can change the assignment.
The Medallion of Karabor supplies 40 Shadow Resistance. Night's End supplies another 40, or 55 with Greater Shadow Resistance. Adding the crafted legs gives 72, for 167 before any other source. A Shadow Armor Kit adds 8 to a compatible slot and takes that package to 175. This four-part route reaches the common 174 unbuffed target while replacing relatively few normal raid items:
- Medallion of Karabor: 40 Shadow Resistance.
- Night's End: 40 Shadow Resistance.
- Greater Shadow Resistance cloak enchant: 15 Shadow Resistance.
- Armor-type crafted legs: 72 Shadow Resistance.
- Shadow Armor Kit: 8 Shadow Resistance.
The package costs four Hearts in total: one for Night's End and three for the legs. It is not automatically the best order for every roster. Bracers deliver 40 resistance per Heart and may be more efficient when early supply is tight; a belt plus bracers also gives 94 resistance for three Hearts. Tanks assigned to absorb Saber Lash commonly remain in normal tank gear, while an Illidan Warlock tank follows a separate Shadow Resistance plan. Confirm every role before crafting 25 identical sets.
All Phase 3 Haste Crafts That Use Hearts
Phase 3 raid-drop recipes add eight wrist items and eight shoulder items at item level 141. The wrist products bind when equipped and cost four Hearts, so they can be made for another character or sold. The shoulder products bind when picked up and cost two Hearts, so the character who will wear the item must have the required profession at 375 and craft it personally. The recipe item and the finished item do not always share the same binding rule; check the live tooltip before assigning a pattern.
| Profession | Tradable bracers, 4 Hearts each | Bind-on-Pickup shoulders, 2 Hearts each | Intended stat profile |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blacksmithing | Swiftsteel Bracers; Dawnsteel Bracers | Swiftsteel Shoulders; Dawnsteel Shoulders | Physical plate DPS; plate healing |
| Leatherworking | Swiftstrike Bracers; Bracers of Renewed Life | Swiftstrike Shoulders; Shoulderpads of Renewed Life | Leather physical DPS; leather healing |
| Leatherworking | Bindings of Lightning Reflexes; Living Earth Bindings | Shoulders of Lightning Reflexes; Living Earth Shoulders | Mail physical DPS; mail healing |
| Tailoring | Bracers of Nimble Thought; Swiftheal Wraps | Mantle of Nimble Thought; Swiftheal Mantle | Spell damage; cloth healing |
These items are not automatic best-in-slot purchases for every specialization. Haste interacts differently with spell timing, mana, hit caps, set bonuses and available raid drops. Compare the complete crafted item against the character's current gear and expected Tier 6 upgrades. A BoP shoulder is especially costly if it forces a profession choice that the character would not otherwise keep.
Secondary Materials and Profession Preparation
Shadow Resistance crafts share a core of Void Crystals, Primal Life and Primal Shadow, then add an armor-specific material: Imbued Netherweave for cloth, Fel Hide for leather, Fel Scales for mail and Adamantite Bars for plate. The haste crafts draw on higher-volume profession materials such as Felsteel, Khorium, Hardened Adamantite, Heavy Knothide Leather, Wind Scales, Spellcloth, Primal Mooncloth and assorted Primals.
- Level the designated Blacksmith, Leatherworker or Tailor to 375 before the recipe is needed.
- Finish Black Temple attunement and start Ashtongue Deathsworn reputation on each vendor-recipe crafter.
- Bank Void Crystals, Primal Life and Primal Shadow for resistance gear.
- Reserve the correct cloth, hide, scale or bars for each assigned armor class.
- Identify which characters may use a haste shoulder before distributing BoP-oriented recipes.
- Keep a separate ledger for Hearts reserved for resistance and Hearts released for throughput crafts.
Do not buy every secondary material merely because it appears in a Phase 3 recipe. First choose the exact item, verify its Heart cost and binding, and confirm that the correct crafter has the recipe. This avoids locking gold into materials for a craft the roster cannot yet make.
Guild Heart of Darkness Priority
The safest early priority is progression access first and personal throughput second. Build only enough Shadow Resistance to execute the chosen Mother Shahraz strategy, then release surplus Hearts to high-impact crafted upgrades. A transparent queue prevents the reagent from disappearing into a complete eight-Heart resistance set when several raiders still lack a basic package.
- Required Mother Shahraz pieces for assigned non-tanks.
- Missing crafts for new recruits or characters changing the resistance roster.
- High-impact BoE haste bracers that remain strong after expected Tier 6 drops.
- BoP haste shoulders for characters committed to the required profession.
- Full resistance sets, PvP experiments and speculative Auction House crafts.
Value each craft by the raid problem it solves. Bracers are the most Shadow Resistance per Heart, while legs concentrate more resistance into one slot and help minimize the number of normal items removed. Neither rule is universally superior. The correct choice depends on which slots the character can replace and how many Hearts the guild has after the reset.
Common Heart of Darkness Mistakes
- Do not claim Hearts come only from Black Temple; Mount Hyjal trash is also a source.
- Do not expect an outdoor or solo farming route.
- Do not promise a fixed number per clear because the drops are random.
- Do not craft a full eight-Heart resistance set when a smaller package reaches the assigned target.
- Do not forget that Okuno's recipes require specific Ashtongue Deathsworn ranks.
- Do not treat haste bracers and shoulders as having the same binding rule.
- Do not hand a BoP shoulder plan to a character that will not keep the required profession.
- Do not spend the guild's resistance reserve on speculative Auction House crafts before Mother Shahraz progression is secure.
Heart of Darkness Checklist
- Complete Black Temple and Mount Hyjal access requirements.
- Prepare the roster's 174 unbuffed Shadow Resistance target where the strategy calls for it.
- Assign 375 profession crafters and verify their Ashtongue reputation.
- Pre-farm Void Crystals, Primals and armor-specific materials.
- Collect Hearts from both Phase 3 raids under a clear loot policy.
- Craft the minimum successful Mother Shahraz package first.
- Sim or compare every haste craft before consuming surplus Hearts.
- Recheck item and recipe binding before the craft is made.
Heart of Darkness planning is a roster problem rather than a simple gold farm. Its early value comes from turning raid drops into reliable Shadow Resistance for Mother Shahraz; its longer-term value comes from the 16 haste crafts available to properly prepared professions. A guild that enters Phase 3 with attunements finished, materials banked, crafters assigned and priorities published can use every Heart immediately instead of losing progression time to avoidable recipe and binding mistakes.
