Need Help With a Raid or Attunement?

Kael'thas Sunstrider is the fourth and final encounter in Tempest Keep: The Eye. The level 70 fight is designed for 25 players and unfolds through five timed phases involving four advisors, seven temporary legendary weapons, Phoenixes, Mind Control, Pyroblast, and Gravity Lapse. The official TBC Anniversary Phase 2 announcement confirms Kael'thas as the last boss of The Eye and confirms that he drops three Tier 5 chest tokens per kill.

This guide is written for the post-nerf encounter used on TBC Anniversary realms. It focuses on assignments that must be decided before the pull, exact phase transitions, correct use of every legendary weapon, role-specific tactics, common wipe causes, and the complete Kael'thas loot table.

Pre-Pull Roles and Raid Assignments

Kael'thas is not an encounter where every decision can be made after combat starts. Mark the advisor death areas, name the Warlock tank, assign physical tanks, choose weapon users, establish the Fireball interrupt order, and identify the players responsible for breaking Mind Control before the first pull.

AssignmentRecommended playerPurpose
Kael'thas main tankProtection Warrior or Protection PaladinControls the boss and uses the legendary shield for the Pyroblast sequence
Capernian tankWarlock with high health, spell hit, and Fire Resistance where neededBuilds ranged threat without entering Arcane Burst range
Sanguinar tankTank with reliable fear protectionHolds Sanguinar against a wall during phases one and three
Telonicus tankSecond physical tankKeeps Telonicus separated and survives Remote Toy disruption
Thaladred controlEntire raid with one current Fixate targetKites the advisor without allowing melee contact
Fireball interruptsThree or four reliable interruptersStops every regular Fireball after Kael'thas becomes active
Mind Control breakersDagger-capable melee and HuntersUses the legendary dagger with a low-damage melee ability
Phoenix controlFree off-tank and ranged damage groupMoves Phoenixes away and destroys each Egg before it hatches

Do not assign every healer to the same target. The Capernian Warlock tank, Sanguinar tank, Telonicus tank, Kael'thas tank, and the moving Thaladred target can all require attention during the encounter. Phase three needs the clearest healing split because all four advisor mechanics are active together.

Raid leaders should verify access before building the final roster. Blizzard's official Tempest Keep attunement walkthrough lists the required Trials of the Naaru and their dungeon objectives.

Kael'thas Phase Timeline

PhaseTriggerPrimary objective
Phase 1Encounter beginsDefeat each advisor at a planned location
Phase 2All four advisors are deadKill, loot, equip, and activate the seven legendary weapons
Phase 3Two minutes after the weapons appearControl all four resurrected advisors at the same time
Phase 4Three minutes after phase three beginsFinish surviving advisors and handle Kael'thas mechanics
Phase 5Kael'thas reaches 50 percent healthSurvive repeated Gravity Lapse cycles and finish the boss

The two-minute and three-minute transitions are fixed. Killing the weapons or advisors early creates recovery time, but slow damage does not delay the next phase. Any living weapon that reaches phase three or advisor that reaches phase four remains active and adds its mechanics to the new phase.

Players blocked by unfinished access objectives can review the Tempest Keep Attunement service before committing to a Kael'thas progression schedule.

Phase 1 Advisor Tactics and Death Positions

Kael'thas releases his advisors one at a time in a fixed order. Their corpses remain where they die, and all four revive at those exact positions in phase three. Good placement separates tanks and prevents Thaladred or Capernian from crossing the melee group.

AdvisorMain mechanicPosition and tactic
Thaladred the DarkenerFixate, Psychic Blow, and SilenceThe Fixate target runs around the room and stays more than 30 yards away. Ranged players attack while melee remain clear. His exact death point is less predictable, so the raid must mark it immediately.
Lord SanguinarBellowing Roar and heavy melee attacksTank him against one side wall. Use Fear Ward, Tremor Totem, or stance-based fear immunity so the tank does not lose position.
Grand Astromancer CapernianFireball, Conflagration, and Arcane BurstA Warlock tanks her near the rear of the room. Everyone else remains beyond 30 yards, and no melee player enters her close-range knockback area.
Master Engineer TelonicusBomb and Remote ToyTank him at the wall opposite Sanguinar. Spread nearby players to limit Bomb damage and expect Remote Toy to cause repeated stuns.

Stop damage briefly if an advisor is about to die in the wrong place. A few seconds spent correcting a corpse position can save the entire phase three attempt. Keep Sanguinar and Telonicus on opposite sides, leave Capernian far from the central melee route, and announce Thaladred's final location.

Phase 2 Legendary Weapons Strategy

Seven weapon enemies become active together. They are not normal boss loot. Each defeated weapon can be looted independently by every eligible raid member, and the resulting item lasts for 15 minutes. Players must loot and equip their assigned weapons immediately because the phase three timer is already running.

  1. Place a ranged tank on the bow and face it away from the raid to control Multi-Shot.
  2. Move the axe away from every stacked target because its Whirlwind can kill nearby players.
  3. Interrupt every heal cast by the mace.
  4. Group the safer melee weapons for cleave and area damage after tanks establish threat.
  5. Ensure every weapon is dead before phase three and confirm that the staff, mace, shield, dagger, and bow have been looted by their assigned users.
  6. Equip temporary weapons before the advisors return and confirm that the required protective effects are active.
Legendary weaponWho should use itEncounter effect and responsibility
Staff of DisintegrationMages, Warlocks, Priests, Druids, and other staff usersIts activated 30-yard field grants immunity to Stun, Silence, and Disorient effects. Keep the aura covering tanks and the main raid whenever possible.
Cosmic InfuserEvery healer able to equip a maceEach heal gives the target 50 percent Fire and Shadow damage reduction for 30 seconds. Maintain this protection on the Capernian and Kael'thas tanks.
Phaseshift BulwarkKael'thas main tank and appropriate advisor tanksThe activated effect absorbs 100000 damage and grants four seconds of Fear and Snare immunity. Save it for the first Pyroblast after Shock Barrier.
Infinity BladeRogues, Warriors, dagger-capable melee, and HuntersA landed melee ability removes Kael'thas Mind Control and applies a stacking magical vulnerability. Auto-attacks do not trigger the dispel.
Netherstrand LongbowHuntersCreates its own ammunition and can stack a 5 percent Physical damage taken debuff up to five times. Hunters should keep the physical vulnerability active on priority targets.
Warp SlicerOne-handed physical damage dealersProvides strong damage and can trigger increased movement and melee attack speed. Use it when a player is not assigned to Mind Control removal.
DevastationTwo-handed weapon usersProvides high physical damage and the same movement and attack speed proc. It offers damage rather than a mandatory defensive counter.

The temporary weapons are tools, not permanent rewards. A player may need more than one weapon for different moments, but the essential coverage comes first: the tank needs the shield, healers need the mace, casters maintain the staff field, Hunters use the bow, and several melee-capable players prepare the dagger for Mind Control.

Phase 3 All Advisors Together

All advisors resurrect exactly two minutes after phase two starts. Move every tank and healer into position before the timer expires. This is usually the best Bloodlust or Heroism window because shortening the overlap reduces the chance that advisors survive into phase four.

  1. Ranged damage dealers focus Thaladred while his Fixate target keeps moving around the outside of the room.
  2. After Thaladred dies, ranged players move to Capernian without entering her 30-yard danger zone.
  3. Melee damage dealers start on Sanguinar and then move to Telonicus.
  4. The Warlock tank holds Capernian at her original position while dedicated healers remain at maximum range.
  5. Separate Sanguinar and Telonicus so Bomb, fear, and melee pressure do not overlap on the same group.
  6. Keep the effect from Staff of Disintegration active to prevent Remote Toy and other control effects from disrupting tanks and healers.
  7. Healers using Cosmic Infuser refresh its protection on every active tank.
  8. At the phase four timer, surviving advisors remain the first damage priority unless immediate Kael'thas mechanics require a response.

A raid that repeatedly reaches phase four with several advisors alive should improve weapon kill speed, loot faster, and use damage cooldowns earlier. Groups that prefer a scheduled full clear can review the Tempest Keep raid service while deciding how to handle their remaining progression.

Phase 4 Kael'thas Tactics

Kael'thas enters combat three minutes after the advisors revive. Assign a tank to meet him at the center and establish an interrupt rotation immediately. Any surviving advisor must be finished without leaving Kael'thas free to cast lethal abilities.

  1. Interrupt every Fireball. Do not rely on one player because Mind Control, movement, or death can break a single-person rotation.
  2. Leave Flamestrike before the secondary explosion. The visual warning provides enough time if players react immediately.
  3. When Kael'thas casts Shock Barrier, switch the entire damage group to the absorb shield.
  4. The main tank activates Phaseshift Bulwark to absorb the first Pyroblast while the raid destroys Shock Barrier.
  5. Interrupt the next Pyroblast as soon as the barrier breaks. If a Phoenix Egg overlaps with this sequence, Shock Barrier remains the higher priority.
  6. When Mind Control affects raid members, use crowd control to stop them from harming allies.
  7. Assigned players equip Infinity Blade and land a low-damage melee ability such as Hamstring, Wing Clip, or Shiv to remove Mind Control.
  8. Keep the staff field active for Arcane Disruption so the tank, healers, and interrupt team are not disabled.

Phoenix and Phoenix Egg Control

An off-tank picks up each Phoenix and moves it away from the raid. The Phoenix continuously loses health while dealing Fire damage around itself. Before it dies, nearby players move away from the death explosion. Its corpse becomes a Phoenix Egg that must be destroyed within 15 seconds or the Phoenix returns at full health.

Ranged damage dealers should handle most Phoenix and Egg damage so melee remain available for interrupts and Mind Control. If Shock Barrier appears while an Egg is alive, break the barrier and stop Pyroblast first, then return to the Egg. Surviving one extra Phoenix is recoverable; losing the main tank to Pyroblast usually is not.

Phase 5 Gravity Lapse Tactics

At 50 percent health, Kael'thas enters his final form. He stops casting Pyroblast and Mind Control, but adds Gravity Lapse, Nether Beam, and Nether Vapor. The fight alternates between airborne survival and shorter ground windows.

  1. When Gravity Lapse begins, Kael'thas pulls the raid inward and grants everyone temporary flight for about 30 seconds.
  2. Move away from other players in every direction. Nether Beam chains to nearby targets and becomes more dangerous with each bounce.
  3. Avoid the dark Nether Vapor clouds. Contact applies a stacking reduction to maximum health.
  4. Remain at a moderate height. Touching the floor too early causes damage and another launch, while flying too high creates lethal fall damage when the effect expires.
  5. Begin a controlled descent before Gravity Lapse ends and leave enough horizontal space for the entire raid to land.
  6. Do not chase damage through unsafe clouds or crowded positions. Shock Barrier can absorb damage during this stage, making survival more valuable than forced uptime.
  7. After landing, restore the Fireball interrupt rotation and resume Phoenix, Egg, and Flamestrike handling.
  8. Repeat until Kael'thas dies, using remaining defensive and damage cooldowns during safe ground windows.

Role Responsibilities for Kael'thas

RoleHighest priorities
TanksControl advisor death positions, separate weapons, reach phase three assignments early, protect the Kael'thas tank from Pyroblast, and move Phoenixes away from the raid
HealersSplit advisor coverage, keep the Warlock tank stable, apply the legendary mace protection, prepare for Pyroblast sequences, and avoid clustering during Gravity Lapse
Melee damage dealersAvoid Thaladred and Capernian, interrupt the mace and Kael'thas, kill Sanguinar and Telonicus in phase three, and remove Mind Control with low-damage abilities
Ranged damage dealersControl the bow, kill Thaladred and Capernian, destroy Shock Barrier, switch to Phoenix Eggs, and maintain wide spacing in phase five
HuntersTank the bow at range, apply its Physical damage vulnerability, support threat with Misdirection, and use the dagger with Wing Clip when assigned to Mind Control removal

Common Kael'thas Mistakes

MistakeWhy it causes a wipeCorrection

Kael'thas Sunstrider Loot

Kael'thas drops item level 138 non-tier equipment and three Tier 5 chest tokens in TBC Anniversary. He can also drop the raid's rare flying mount and provides quest items connected to a Shattrath reward and later raid progression.

Kael'thas Sunstrider Final Verdict

Kael'thas is won before the final phase begins. Planned advisor positions create a controllable phase three, fast weapon handling supplies every required counter, and a disciplined priority system prevents Pyroblast, Mind Control, and Phoenix Eggs from overwhelming the raid. Once the group consistently reaches 50 percent with its core assignments alive, the encounter becomes a repeatable cycle of spacing, controlled landings, interrupts, and safe damage windows.
