The Battle for Mount Hyjal is built around four timed defense events containing eight fixed enemy waves each. The first sixteen waves take place at the Alliance camp with Jaina Proudmoore, while the remaining sixteen take place at the Horde camp with Thrall. Blizzard has scheduled Mount Hyjal to open on August 27, 2026, according to the official TBC Anniversary Phase 3 announcement.
Mount Hyjal has 32 trash waves in total. Archimonde does not have an additional wave event. Successful clears depend on controlled tank threat, caster interrupts, flying enemy assignments and efficient mana recovery between waves.
How Mount Hyjal Waves Work
Each of the first four bosses is preceded by eight predetermined waves. The composition does not change between weekly lockouts, which allows the raid to prepare tank, crowd control and damage assignments for every wave.
- Waves normally arrive approximately two minutes apart.
- Finishing early creates a short out-of-combat recovery window.
- The next wave can arrive while previous enemies are still alive.
- Players should drink or resurrect immediately after leaving combat.
- The boss follows after the eighth wave of its defense section.
- A failed defense event resets the current eight-wave block.
- Jaina or Thrall must survive their respective base defense events.
- Archimonde is reached after Azgalor without another eight-wave block.
The enemy counter must reach zero before the event can advance correctly. If the counter stops moving, search the camp for Gargoyles, Frost Wyrms, Necromancers or another enemy attacking distant NPCs.
Recommended Wave Roles
| Role | Wave Responsibility |
|---|---|
| Area tank | Collect Ghouls, Crypt Fiends and Fel Stalkers before AoE begins |
| Physical tanks | Separate Abominations and assist with Giant Infernals |
| Interrupt team | Stop Shadow Bolts and prevent uncontrolled caster damage |
| Ranged team | Collect Gargoyles and kill Frost Wyrms |
| Physical DPS | Kill Banshees protected by Anti-Magic Shell |
| Warlocks | Control demons and use Seed of Corruption after tank threat |
| Healers | Follow assigned tanks and preserve mana between waves |
A Protection Paladin is the most reliable area tank because Consecration can control large groups arriving from the same path. Hunters should use Misdirection on the opening targets, while the remaining tanks remove Abominations or Infernals from the main group.

Mount Hyjal Trash Kill Priority
| Priority | Target | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Loose enemies attacking healers or important NPCs | Any uncontrolled enemy can kill a player or fail the defense event |
| 2 | Shadowy Necromancers | Multiple Shadow Bolts and Unholy Frenzy can overwhelm tanks |
| 3 | Fel Stalkers | Repeated Mana Burns reduce healer and caster resources |
| 4 | Frost Wyrms and Gargoyles | Flying enemies remain outside the ground tank position |
| 5 | Banshees | Banshee Curse cripples physical DPS and Anti-Magic Shell delays magical damage |
| 6 | Abominations and Giant Infernals | They create sustained tank and nearby area damage |
| 7 | Crypt Fiends and Ghouls | These are normally controlled by the main area tank and AoE damage |
This is a general priority rather than a rule for every wave. During an air wave, ranged DPS must handle Gargoyles and Frost Wyrms immediately. During the all-caster Azgalor Wave 6, Necromancers and Banshees must be controlled simultaneously by different teams.
Ghoul Abilities and Tactics
Ghouls are the basic melee enemy and usually appear in large groups. Their Frenzy temporarily increases attack speed, making an uncontrolled pack dangerous to healers and cloth damage dealers.
- Collect all Ghouls on the Protection Paladin.
- Wait for Consecration and Misdirection before beginning AoE.
- Use slows and stuns if the tank needs to reposition.
- Do not chase individual Ghouls away from the main damage area.
- Finish low-health Ghouls before moving toward distant targets.
Crypt Fiend Abilities and Tactics
Crypt Fiends can attack from range, summon scarabs and use Web to restrict movement. They may stop outside Consecration if the raid does not force them toward the tank position.
- Use line of sight or ranged threat to move them into the ground pack.
- Keep Webbed tanks stable until the movement restriction ends.
- Include Crypt Fiends in controlled area damage after positioning.
- Use Shackle Undead when a wave needs to be divided.
- Kill remaining scarabs before the raid leaves the area.
Shadowy Necromancer Abilities and Tactics
Shadowy Necromancers are humanoid casters and one of the highest trash priorities. Shadow Bolt deals substantial ranged damage, while Unholy Frenzy doubles the attack speed of another enemy for 20 seconds.
- Assign individual interrupt targets before the wave arrives.
- Use Counterspell, Kick, Pummel and Earth Shock rotations.
- Polymorph extra Necromancers when several arrive together.
- Do not break crowd control with uncontrolled area damage.
- Kill active Necromancers after the main melee group is stable.
Several Necromancers attacking the same tank can create more damage than the melee pack. Unholy Frenzy on an Abomination or another dangerous enemy should be treated as a tank emergency.
Abomination Abilities and Tactics
Abominations deal heavy physical damage and create Disease Cloud around themselves. They can also use Knockdown against their primary target, briefly preventing that tank from reacting.
- Divide large Abomination groups between the physical tanks.
- Keep them outside the main caster and healer positions.
- Move melee away from overlapping Disease Clouds.
- Use stuns, slows and roots to reduce simultaneous tank damage.
- Prepare additional healing when several Knockdowns overlap.
Do not place every Abomination on the Protection Paladin together with a complete Ghoul pack. Separating them reduces stun pressure and prevents Disease Cloud from covering the primary AoE position.
Banshee Abilities and Tactics
Banshees attack with Banshee Wail, apply Banshee Curse and protect themselves with Anti-Magic Shell. Banshee Curse reduces physical hit chance by 66 percent and lasts long enough to affect the following wave if it is not removed.
- Assign Mages and Druids to remove Banshee Curse immediately.
- Use physical DPS when Anti-Magic Shell is active.
- Do not waste important caster cooldowns into the shield.
- Separate Banshees with Shackle Undead when tank control is unstable.
- Check the raid for remaining curses before the next wave.
Wave 6 before Azgalor contains eight Banshees and eight Necromancers. Physical DPS should focus Banshees while interrupts and crowd control prevent the Necromancers from casting freely.
Gargoyle Abilities and Tactics
Gargoyles begin airborne and may appear behind the Horde base instead of following the main ground path. They frequently attack Troll or Tauren NPCs before the raid notices them.
- Assign three or four ranged players and one healer to the Gargoyle team.
- Move the team toward the expected air spawn before the previous wave ends.
- Use Hunters or Warlocks to gain ranged threat.
- Move away after gaining threat to pull Gargoyles lower and toward the raid.
- Keep the main ground team informed when the air group is under pressure.
Most Kaz'rogal Gargoyle waves enter from the rear of the Horde camp. The exception is Wave 6, where nine Gargoyles and one Frost Wyrm approach from the front.
Frost Wyrm Abilities and Tactics
Frost Wyrms remain airborne and use Frost Breath against their primary target. The attack also damages and slows players within 8 yards of that target.
- Use a Hunter, Warlock or another durable ranged player as the initial target.
- Spread ranged players around the Frost Wyrm tank.
- Keep melee on the ground enemies because the Wyrm does not land reliably.
- Kill the Frost Wyrm before returning ranged damage to the ground pack.
- Assign a dedicated healer to the ranged tank during combined waves.
Giant Infernal Abilities and Tactics
Giant Infernals fall into several areas around the Horde camp and deal continuous Immolation damage to nearby players. Their landing positions are less predictable than the normal ground wave path.
- Assign tanks and healers to the known Infernal areas before the wave.
- Use Banish to remove extra Infernals temporarily.
- Separate large Infernal groups instead of stacking every Immolation aura.
- Keep melee away until the tanks have control.
- Protect the Tauren NPCs from uncontrolled Infernals.
- Release Banish targets one at a time after the main group is stable.
Warlocks should agree on numbered Banish targets. Multiple Warlocks controlling the same Infernal leaves another add active and wastes the most valuable control available for these waves.
Fel Stalker Abilities and Tactics
Fel Stalkers are demons that cast Mana Burn at healers and other mana users. Their physical attacks are less dangerous than the resources they remove during a timed wave sequence.
- Interrupt or stun Mana Burn whenever possible.
- Gather Fel Stalkers on the area tank for controlled AoE.
- Use Banish when the raid needs to divide a difficult wave.
- Kill them before healers lose enough mana to delay recovery.
- Do not let them remain behind the raid attacking distant casters.
Crowd Control by Enemy Type
| Enemy | Type | Useful Control |
|---|---|---|
| Ghoul | Undead | Shackle Undead, slows and stuns |
| Crypt Fiend | Undead | Shackle Undead, roots and slows |
| Shadowy Necromancer | Humanoid | Polymorph, interrupts, stuns and controlled Fear |
| Abomination | Undead | Shackle Undead, roots, slows and stuns |
| Banshee | Undead | Shackle Undead and interrupts |
| Gargoyle | Undead | Ranged threat and focused damage |
| Frost Wyrm | Undead | Ranged tanking and focused damage |
| Giant Infernal | Demon | Banish, Fear and tank separation |
| Fel Stalker | Demon | Banish, stuns and interrupts |
Fear must be used carefully because enemies can run toward another camp position or leave the planned damage area. Polymorph, Shackle Undead and Banish are safer when the wave timer allows controlled single-target cleanup.
Rage Winterchill Wave Set
The first Alliance defense introduces the core undead enemies gradually. Necromancers appear in Wave 4, while Abominations enter the event in Wave 6.
| Wave | Enemy Composition | Main Assignment |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 Ghouls | Build area threat and test the AoE timing |
| 2 | 10 Ghouls and 2 Crypt Fiends | Pull the Crypt Fiends into the Ghoul pack |
| 3 | 6 Ghouls and 6 Crypt Fiends | Control ranged positioning before AoE |
| 4 | 6 Ghouls, 4 Crypt Fiends and 2 Shadowy Necromancers | Interrupt or control both Necromancers |
| 5 | 2 Ghouls, 6 Crypt Fiends and 4 Shadowy Necromancers | Assign one interrupter or crowd control player to each Necromancer |
| 6 | 6 Ghouls and 6 Abominations | Split Abominations between physical tanks |
| 7 | 4 Ghouls, 4 Shadowy Necromancers and 4 Abominations | Control Necromancers while tanks stabilize Abominations |
| 8 | 6 Ghouls, 4 Crypt Fiends, 2 Abominations and 2 Shadowy Necromancers | Use the normal mixed-wave assignments and preserve mana |
Dangerous Rage Winterchill Waves
Wave 5 contains four Necromancers but few melee enemies. Do not allow all four casters to attack the same tank. Polymorph two targets and interrupt the remaining two until they can be killed.
Wave 6 is the first heavy Abomination check. Assign the physical tanks before the wave and avoid stacking all six Disease Clouds in the same location. Wave 7 combines Abomination tank pressure with four active Necromancers and is the most dangerous section of the first defense.
Anetheron Wave Set
The second Alliance defense introduces Banshees. The raid must add curse removal and physical Banshee damage without losing its existing Necromancer assignments.
| Wave | Enemy Composition | Main Assignment |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 10 Ghouls | Controlled area damage and mana conservation |
| 2 | 8 Ghouls and 4 Abominations | Separate Abominations from the Ghoul tank |
| 3 | 4 Ghouls, 4 Crypt Fiends and 4 Shadowy Necromancers | Control every Necromancer before AoE |
| 4 | 6 Crypt Fiends, 2 Shadowy Necromancers and 2 Banshees | Decurse Banshee Curse and interrupt Necromancers |
| 5 | 6 Ghouls, 2 Shadowy Necromancers and 4 Banshees | Physical DPS focuses Banshees |
| 6 | 6 Ghouls, 4 Shadowy Necromancers and 2 Abominations | Prevent simultaneous Shadow Bolts on the active tanks |
| 7 | 2 Ghouls, 4 Abominations, 4 Crypt Fiends and 2 Banshees | Split Abominations and remove curses immediately |
| 8 | 4 Ghouls, 4 Abominations, 2 Crypt Fiends, 2 Banshees and 2 Shadowy Necromancers | Use every established role without uncontrolled AoE |
Dangerous Anetheron Waves
Wave 6 places four Necromancers behind a melee group containing Abominations. A tank can be stunned by Knockdown while several Shadow Bolts land. Crowd control at least two Necromancers until the tanks are stable.
Wave 8 contains five different enemy types. Assign Banshees to physical DPS, Necromancers to the interrupt team and Abominations to separate tanks. The remaining Ghouls and Crypt Fiends can be gathered for area damage.
Moving From the Alliance Camp
After the second Alliance defense has been completed, the raid moves to the Horde base. The Horde section requires different positioning because flying enemies can spawn behind the raid while ground enemies enter from the front.
- Identify the front ground-wave tank position.
- Mark the Tauren and Troll areas used by the air team.
- Assign three or four ranged players and one healer to flying enemies.
- Keep Thrall and the Tauren Warriors alive for their damage and control.
- Do not force the full raid to chase Gargoyles through the camp.
Kaz'rogal Wave Set
The first Horde defense introduces Gargoyles and Frost Wyrms. Most Gargoyles appear behind the camp, but the Wave 6 air group enters from the front.
| Wave | Enemy Composition | Main Assignment |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 Ghouls, 4 Abominations, 2 Banshees and 2 Shadowy Necromancers | Split tanks and control both caster types |
| 2 | 4 Ghouls and 10 Gargoyles from the rear | Air team moves behind the camp before the wave |
| 3 | 6 Ghouls, 6 Crypt Fiends and 2 Shadowy Necromancers | Interrupt Necromancers and stack the ground enemies |
| 4 | 6 Crypt Fiends, 2 Shadowy Necromancers and 6 Gargoyles from the rear | Divide the raid between front casters and rear Gargoyles |
| 5 | 4 Ghouls, 4 Shadowy Necromancers and 6 Abominations | Heavy tank healing and Necromancer crowd control |
| 6 | 1 Frost Wyrm and 9 Gargoyles from the front | Full ranged team focuses the Frost Wyrm and Gargoyles |
| 7 | 6 Ghouls, 4 Abominations and 1 Frost Wyrm | Ranged kills the Wyrm while tanks control the ground group |
| 8 | 4 Ghouls, 4 Crypt Fiends, 2 Banshees, 2 Shadowy Necromancers and 4 Abominations | Execute every ground-wave assignment simultaneously |
Dangerous Kaz'rogal Waves
Wave 4 splits the raid across two directions. The front team handles Crypt Fiends and Necromancers, while the air team collects six Gargoyles from the rear. Each team needs healing coverage.
Wave 5 combines six Abominations with four Necromancers. Control the Necromancers until the tanks divide the Abominations. Wave 6 is a pure air wave from the front and requires every available ranged player. Wave 8 is the final mixed ground check and should be handled without chasing targets away from the planned tank area.
Azgalor Wave Set
The final defense introduces Giant Infernals and Fel Stalkers. These waves require demon control, multiple tank positions and careful healer mana management.
| Wave | Enemy Composition | Main Assignment |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6 Abominations and 6 Shadowy Necromancers | Split Abominations and control most Necromancers |
| 2 | 5 Ghouls, 8 Gargoyles and 1 Frost Wyrm | Ranged team handles the complete air group |
| 3 | 8 Ghouls and 8 Giant Infernals | Collect Ghouls and divide or Banish Infernals |
| 4 | 6 Fel Stalkers and 8 Giant Infernals | Stop Mana Burns and control excess Infernals |
| 5 | 4 Abominations, 6 Fel Stalkers and 4 Shadowy Necromancers | Interrupt Mana Burn and Shadow Bolt while tanks separate Abominations |
| 6 | 8 Shadowy Necromancers and 8 Banshees | Crowd control Necromancers and use physical DPS on Banshees |
| 7 | 8 Giant Infernals, 2 Fel Stalkers, 2 Crypt Fiends and 2 Ghouls | Use Banish targets and kill Fel Stalkers before full AoE |
| 8 | 4 Abominations, 4 Crypt Fiends, 2 Fel Stalkers, 2 Shadowy Necromancers and 4 Banshees | Execute all tank, interrupt, decurse and physical DPS assignments |
Dangerous Azgalor Waves
Wave 4 can leave the healing team without mana if six Fel Stalkers cast freely. Interrupt Mana Burn, control several Infernals with Banish and kill the Fel Stalkers before releasing the remaining demons.
Wave 5 combines both dangerous caster types with four Abominations. Each Necromancer needs an interrupt or crowd control player, while Fel Stalkers remain inside the area tank position.
Wave 6 contains sixteen casters and no normal melee pack. Assign physical DPS to Banshees, crowd control several Necromancers and interrupt every active Shadow Bolt. Uncontrolled magical AoE is inefficient while Anti-Magic Shell is active.
Wave 7 contains eight Infernals and should begin with predetermined Banish targets. Wave 8 is the final trash wave of the raid and combines five enemy types. Do not abandon controlled assignments simply because no additional waves follow it.
Hardest Mount Hyjal Waves
| Wave | Main Danger | Recommended Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Rage Winterchill Wave 7 | Four Abominations and four Necromancers | Split tanks and crowd control half of the casters |
| Anetheron Wave 6 | Tank stuns combined with Shadow Bolts | Stabilize Abominations before releasing Necromancers |
| Kaz'rogal Wave 4 | Enemies attacking from front and rear | Use separate ground and air teams with dedicated healing |
| Kaz'rogal Wave 5 | Six Abominations and four Necromancers | Use all physical tanks and a complete interrupt rotation |
| Azgalor Wave 4 | Eight Infernals and six Mana Burns | Banish Infernals and kill Fel Stalkers first |
| Azgalor Wave 6 | Eight Necromancers and eight Banshees | Divide physical DPS, interrupts and crowd control |
| Azgalor Wave 7 | Eight scattered Infernals | Use numbered Banish targets and separate tanks |
| Azgalor Wave 8 | Five enemy types at the same time | Maintain all established assignments until the wave is clear |
Mana Management Between Waves
Fast damage is only useful if the raid can recover before the next group arrives. Healers and casters should stop unnecessary casting when a wave is nearly defeated and begin drinking as soon as combat ends.
- Do not refresh long damage effects on enemies that will die immediately.
- Finish the final target with physical or low-cost abilities when possible.
- Use Mana Tide Totems in a planned rotation.
- Save major mana cooldowns for the hardest later waves.
- Kill Fel Stalkers before they remove the mana needed for recovery.
- Resurrect dead players immediately after leaving combat.
- Drink before rebuffing when the next wave timer is short.
Using Jaina and Thrall Camp NPCs
The friendly NPCs provide meaningful damage and crowd control, but they should support the raid rather than become the primary tanks. Losing too many NPCs makes later waves slower and more dangerous.
- Use a Hunter or tank to bring one controlled enemy toward important NPC groups.
- Taunt dangerous enemies away from Jaina and Thrall.
- Protect Tauren Warriors because their War Stomp helps control Horde waves.
- Intercept Gargoyles before they kill distant Troll NPCs.
- Do not place multiple Abomination Disease Clouds on friendly groups.
- Move Infernals away from NPCs when Immolation damage begins stacking.
Wave Recovery After a Death
A single death does not always require a reset. The raid should finish the active priority enemies, leave combat and resurrect the player before the next wave.
- Call the death and identify whether the player had a unique assignment.
- Transfer interrupts, tanking or air control to the backup player.
- Use combat resurrection only when the missing assignment is immediately required.
- Finish the wave without wasting major cooldowns on low-priority enemies.
- Resurrect and rebuff immediately after leaving combat.
- Use health and mana consumables if the next wave is already approaching.
If the area tank dies at the start of a large wave, use Shackle Undead, Polymorph and Banish to divide the enemies. Continuing full area damage without stable threat normally creates additional deaths.
Mount Hyjal Trash Farming Value
Mount Hyjal trash provides Scale of the Sands reputation and can drop valuable raid equipment, Heart of Darkness and Mark of the Illidari. The fixed waves make the raid suitable for organized trash farming, but a farm group still needs reliable tank threat and caster control.
Players focused on regular Hyjal Summit clears should keep the same tank, air team and interrupt assignments every week. Consistency shortens the timed waves more effectively than changing the strategy for every lockout.
Reputation is awarded throughout the defense events, making repeated wave clears part of normal Scale of the Sands progression. Trash reputation and character rewards remain separate from basic raid access.
Mount Hyjal Wave Checklist
- Assign one area tank and at least two physical off-tanks.
- Publish the Necromancer interrupt rotation.
- Assign Mages and Druids to Banshee Curse removal.
- Prepare Shackle Undead, Polymorph and Banish marks.
- Create a rear Gargoyle team with its own healer.
- Select a ranged Frost Wyrm tank.
- Assign numbered Banish targets for Infernal waves.
- Protect Tauren Warriors during the Horde defense.
- Stop damage briefly if tank threat is unstable.
- Drink immediately after every completed wave.
- Search the camp if the enemy counter does not reach zero.
- Remember that Archimonde has no additional eight-wave event.
Common Mount Hyjal Trash Mistakes
- Starting AoE immediately: Tanks lose control and enemies attack healers.
- Ignoring Necromancers: Several Shadow Bolts can kill a tank during Knockdown.
- Using magical damage into Anti-Magic Shell: Banshees remain alive while the next wave approaches.
- Leaving Banshee Curse active: Physical DPS loses 66 percent hit chance.
- Missing rear Gargoyles: Distant Horde NPCs die and the wave counter remains active.
- Stacking every Abomination: Knockdown and Disease Cloud pressure become difficult to heal.
- Allowing Mana Burn casts: Healers enter the next wave without resources.
- Breaking every crowd control effect with AoE: Difficult waves return to full strength at once.
- Using duplicate Banish assignments: Uncontrolled Infernals damage tanks and NPCs.
- Chasing enemies across the camp: Damage becomes divided and healers lose range.
- Forgetting recovery time: The next wave arrives before resurrection and drinking are complete.
- Counting 40 waves: Mount Hyjal has 32 waves because Archimonde has no wave block.
Final Mount Hyjal Waves Strategy
Mount Hyjal trash becomes predictable once every player knows the fixed wave compositions. The Protection Paladin controls the main ground group, physical tanks separate Abominations, ranged players intercept flying enemies and the interrupt team prevents Necromancers and Fel Stalkers from draining raid resources.
The most dangerous sections are not the largest packs but the waves that combine different jobs. Kaz'rogal forces the raid to fight in two directions, while the Azgalor waves combine demons, mana pressure, caster control and magic immunity. Preserve mana, use crowd control before the raid becomes overwhelmed and follow the same assignments through all 32 waves.
