Nightmare is AION 2's solo boss-challenge ladder for Level 45 characters. You fight bosses alone, push increasingly difficult challenge levels and earn Phantasmal Fragments that can be spent in the Nightmare Shop.
Global Season 1 currently uses seven Nightmare bosses in Layer I. You receive 2 attempts per day, can store up to 14 attempts, and an attempt is deducted when you successfully clear the fight.
Quick answer: reach Level 45, enter Nightmare from the endgame content menu, push the highest boss level you can reliably clear and avoid letting your 14-attempt cap fill. First clears give substantially more Phantasmal Fragments than repeat clears, so progression is usually more valuable than farming an easy tier repeatedly.

How Does Nightmare Work?
Nightmare is not a normal Expedition dungeon. There is no party and no tank or healer to carry mistakes for you.
You select an available boss and challenge level, enter alone and defeat it within the encounter rules.
Higher challenge levels increase the recommended character power and increase the first-clear reward.
Nightmare is therefore useful for two different reasons:
- earning Phantasmal Fragments;
- testing whether your build, rotation and defensive play are actually strong enough for harder content.
Nightmare vs Nightmare Altar
These are two different AION 2 systems.
| Nightmare | Nightmare Altar | |
|---|---|---|
| System | Boss Challenge | Ascension Trial |
| Format | Solo boss ladder | Solo scored dungeon |
| Attempts | 2 per day, stores 14 | Uses the Ascension Trial weekly entry pool |
| Main reward | Phantasmal Fragments | Enhancement and progression rewards |
If your menu says Ascension Trial: Nightmare Altar, you are not in the Nightmare Boss Challenge described on this page.

Global Season 1 contains seven Layer I bosses.
| Boss | Rarity | Suggested Item Level | Location |

| Furious Feruk | Common | 1,000 → 1,600 | Dranactus Underkeep |
| Fafnir's Poison Blood | Common | 1,000 → 1,600 | Root of the Sacred Tree |
| Wraith Giselle | Common | 1,000 → 1,600 | Crypt |
| Fortress Guardian Notun | Rare | 1,700 → 2,300 | Destruction Archon Underground Fortress |
| Mutated Gerod | Rare | 1,700 → 2,300 | Blades Hideout |
| Zikel's Apparition | Epic | 2,400 → 3,000 | Impetusium |
How to Unlock Nightmare Bosses
The Season 1 ladder follows a progression chain.
- Start with the four Common bosses.
- Push their challenge progression to unlock the two Rare bosses.
- Progress Fortress Guardian Notun and Mutated Gerod.
- Unlock Zikel's Apparition, the Season 1 Layer I capstone.
The important concept is that boss progression matters more than repeatedly farming the easiest fight.
Nightmare Challenge Levels 1–10
Each current Season 1 boss has challenge levels from 1 to 10.
For an opening boss, the recommended progression rises approximately from Item Level 1,000 at Level 1 to 1,600 at Level 10.
The two Rare bosses rise from roughly 1,700 to 2,300, while Zikel's Apparition progresses from approximately 2,400 to 3,000.
You do not always need to clear every lower challenge level one by one. If the game allows a higher challenge directly and your character is strong enough, jumping ahead can save attempts. The trade-off is that skipped first-clear rewards remain unclaimed.
How Nightmare Tickets Work
You receive 2 Nightmare attempts per day.
Unused attempts accumulate until you reach 14, equal to seven days of natural recharge.
| Daily recharge | 2 attempts |
| Maximum stored | 14 attempts |
| Shared with alts? | No — tracked per character |
| Failed pull | Attempt is not normally deducted until clear |
Should You Save Nightmare Attempts?
Yes, but never beyond the 14-attempt cap.
Early after reaching Level 45, your Item Level can rise quickly. Saving several attempts while improving your gear can let you clear a higher challenge level later and earn a stronger first-clear payout.
A practical strategy is:
- Do not waste attempts on repeat clears immediately after hitting 45.
- Improve your equipment and permanent progression.
- Push the highest new challenge you can realistically defeat.
- Once you approach 14 attempts, start spending at least the daily recharge.
The worst outcome is sitting at 14 and losing new daily attempts.
Do Failed Nightmare Attempts Consume a Ticket?
The current Global attempt tooltip indicates that the count is deducted upon clearing.
This makes Nightmare a useful place to learn harder bosses. You can test a higher challenge, practise your rotation and learn dodge timings without treating every wipe like a consumed successful run.
Nightmare Rewards
The primary reward is Phantasmal Fragments.
First clears pay substantially more than repeat clears.
| Example | First-Clear Reward |
|---|---|
| Opening boss — Level 1 | 500 Phantasmal Fragments |
| Opening boss — Level 10 | 900 Phantasmal Fragments |
| Zikel's Apparition — Level 1 | 1,500 Phantasmal Fragments |
This is why Nightmare should first be treated as a progression ladder, not as an easy repeat-farm.
What Are Phantasmal Fragments?
Phantasmal Fragment is the currency used in the Nightmare Shop.
The current Global client lists 33 shop items purchased with this currency.
Rewards include:
- Daevanion Crystals;
- Soul Codex items;
- Unique Amplify Stone Fragments;
- Clash Rune rewards;
- Stigma progression items;
- armor and weapon appearances;
- Pantheon statues;
- Conqueror Wings;
- Nightmare Wings.
What Should You Buy From the Nightmare Shop?
For progression, prioritize useful power before expensive cosmetics.
| Item | Price | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Daevanion Crystal | 300 | High if Daevanion progression is still incomplete |
| Soul Codex ×5 | 400 | High for relevant Soul progression |
| Unique Amplify Stone Fragment | 500 | High for gear progression |
| Clash Rune Chest | 500 | Useful depending on your current runes |
| Colossus: Zikel's Apparition | 14,000 | Pantheon / long-term collection target |
| Conqueror Wings | 20,000 | Long-term |
| Nightmare Wings | 160,000 | Major long-term target |
The exact best purchase depends on which progression system is currently blocking your character.
Do not spend all early fragments on cosmetics if you still need inexpensive permanent upgrades.
Are Nightmare Wings Worth It?
Nightmare Wings cost 160,000 Phantasmal Fragments, making them the largest obvious long-term shop target.
The wings provide combat-related effects and collection value, but their price means they should usually be treated as a long-term goal rather than your first purchase.
If buying a few inexpensive progression items gives you enough power to clear higher Nightmare levels, those upgrades can effectively help you earn fragments faster.
Nightmare Shop Reset and Purchase Limits
Most items in the Nightmare exchange shop have purchase limits.
Some progression goods use weekly limits, while major cosmetics and statues are one-time character purchases.
Always check the current in-game shop before reset, because the shop contains both repeatable progression items and permanent collection purchases.
Nightmare Season 1 Ranking
Nightmare also contributes to a seasonal competitive ranking.
Global Season 1 client data contains ranks from lower brackets up through Master, Grand Master and Challenger tiers, with titles and Zikel-themed appearance rewards attached to higher placements.
For most players, however, clearing new challenge levels and collecting useful shop currency should come before chasing rank.
Best Builds for Nightmare
Nightmare rewards solo consistency, not only theoretical DPS.
Prioritize:
- your strongest single-target rotation;
- reliable healing or sustain available to your class;
- defensive cooldown usage;
- movement skills;
- boss-specific Stigma swaps;
- Daevanion nodes that improve core rotational skills;
- enough accuracy and relevant combat stats for your target tier.
If you die while the boss still has significant HP remaining, the answer is often not “more DPS.” Improve mechanic execution first.
How to Progress Nightmare Efficiently
- Reach Level 45.
- Let attempts accumulate while finishing your first endgame gear upgrades.
- Clear new first-clear levels instead of repeating easy bosses.
- Use failed pulls to learn mechanics.
- Spend fragments on progression items that solve an immediate weakness.
- Push the next boss as your Item Level increases.
- Never allow the attempt counter to remain capped at 14.
Nightmare and the Level 45 Endgame
Nightmare should be progressed alongside, not instead of:
- Conquest gear;
- Transcendence and Arcana;
- Daevanion Boards;
- Stigmas;
- Abyss progression;
- permanent map systems.
Our AION 2 Level 45 & Endgame Guide shows where Nightmare fits into the full progression route.
Nightmare vs Conquest: Which Should You Prioritize?
They use different resource systems, so you normally do not need to choose one exclusively.
Conquest is primarily for equipment.
Nightmare uses its own attempt counter and primarily provides Phantasmal Fragments.
Do both, but spend your Nightmare attempts strategically instead of burning them on low-value repeats.

Conclusion
AION 2 Nightmare is best approached as a progression ladder, not a daily farm you mindlessly repeat. Bank attempts while your gear improves, push new first clears, use free failed pulls to practise mechanics and spend Phantasmal Fragments where they improve your character most.
For Global Season 1, your main long-term goal is the seven-boss Layer I chain ending with Zikel's Apparition.
