Diablo 4 Echoing Hatred Guide: Trace of Echoes Farming, Wave Strategies and Rewards

Diablo 4 Echoing Hatred Guide: Trace of Echoes Farming, Wave Strategies and Rewards

Echoing Hatred in Diablo 4 is a rare endgame survival activity introduced with the Lord of Hatred expansion. Instead of clearing a dungeon or defeating a single boss, you fight increasingly dangerous waves of enemies until your character becomes Overwhelmed or reaches the activity's limit. Entry requires an exceptionally rare Trace of Echoes, making preparation essential. As of October 30, 2026, during Season 15 and Patch 3.2.4, Echoing Hatred has a maximum of 150 waves. This guide explains how to obtain the entry item, unlock the arena, manage the Overwhelm mechanic, prepare your build, and earn its most important rewards, including The Crab with the Knife pet and the secret Howling Mouth of Madness portal.

Quick answer: Obtain Trace of Echoes from random loot, particularly Elite and Champion enemies, or potentially from a Whisper Keys Cache. Offer it to the Sightless Eye in Temis to enter Echoing Hatred. Use a build with sustained area damage, reliable defenses, and mobility to control the Overwhelm meter. Complete a run after reaching at least Tier 60 for The Crab with the Knife pet, or solve the hidden Shrine puzzle for the Howling Mouth of Madness portal.

What Is Echoing Hatred in Diablo 4?

Echoing Hatred is a permanent Lord of Hatred endgame activity available to eligible expansion characters. Unlike Infernal Hordes, Nightmare Dungeons, and The Pit, it takes place in a dedicated arena where randomized groups of enemies appear continuously. Ordinary monsters, Elites, Champions, and bosses create increasingly difficult combinations, sometimes forcing you to fight multiple bosses alongside large monster packs.

The objective is to survive while eliminating enemies quickly enough to prevent the arena from becoming Overwhelmed. Staying alive is only part of the challenge: a heavily defensive character can still fail when monsters accumulate faster than they are killed. Strong area damage and consistent offensive uptime are therefore just as important as survivability.

Blizzard initially described the activity as an endless challenge. However, Patch 3.1.0, released on June 30, 2026, introduced a maximum of 150 waves. Older guides describing unlimited progression no longer reflect the current game.

Echoing Hatred Requirements and Unlock

Echoing Hatred belongs to the Lord of Hatred expansion rather than to a specific season. You need access to the expansion's content and the city of Temis in Skovos, where the Sightless Eye provides entry.

  • Lord of Hatred: Expansion access is required.
  • Temis: Reach the city through the relevant campaign progression or an eligible campaign-skip route.
  • Trace of Echoes: Obtain the rare entry item before starting an attempt.
  • Sightless Eye: Offer the Trace at this object in Temis.
  • Endgame preparation: Bring a build capable of sustained combat against escalating enemy difficulty.

Blizzard has not published a separate universal Item Power threshold or mandatory Torment XII requirement specifically for entering Echoing Hatred. Entry requirements should not be confused with the much higher character strength needed to reach its later tiers. The official expansion overview confirms the Trace of Echoes and Sightless Eye interaction.

Where to Get Trace of Echoes

Trace of Echoes is an exceptionally rare entry item obtained through loot. Blizzard has not published its exact drop percentage, a guaranteed farming route, or a fixed number of enemies required to obtain one.

Two acquisition methods have direct support in Blizzard's patch notes. Patch 3.1.0 increased the drop chance of Echoing Hatred keys from Elite and Champion enemies. Patch 3.2.1 added a small chance for Keys Caches from Whispers to contain Trace of Echoes.

Confirmed Trace of Echoes sources
SourceDrop conditionFarming approach
Elite enemiesRandom drop; chance increased in Patch 3.1.0Clear activities containing frequent Elite packs
Champion enemiesRandom drop; chance increased in Patch 3.1.0Prioritize dense combat areas with fast clear times
Whisper Keys CachesSmall chance added in Patch 3.2.1Complete Grim Favors and select a Keys Cache when available

These are confirmed opportunities, not a complete official list of every possible loot source. Players have reported finding Traces during different endgame activities, but individual reports do not establish a superior drop rate. Avoid guides promising a guaranteed Trace after a specific number of runs.

Best Activities for Farming Trace of Echoes

The most practical approach is to defeat as many Elite and Champion enemies as possible while continuing to earn useful progression rewards. Your actual clear speed matters more than the name of an activity.

  • Helltides: Combine frequent combat, Elite encounters, and ordinary resource farming.
  • Infernal Hordes: Fight repeated waves with opportunities to eliminate large numbers of enemies.
  • Nightmare Dungeons: Choose layouts you can clear quickly while collecting equipment and progression materials.
  • Other Elite-rich activities: Remain worthwhile when they provide useful rewards even if no Trace drops.

Blizzard has not established that any one of these activities has a higher Trace drop percentage. A fast Helltide rotation may be more productive than a difficult Infernal Hordes run if your character clears the former much more efficiently. The goal is to maximize useful kills per minute without sacrificing ordinary character progression.

How Whisper Keys Caches Work

Whispers provide an additional acquisition opportunity. Complete Grim Favors through activities that overlap your normal farming route, then check the available reward categories. If a Keys Cache is offered, it has a small chance to contain Trace of Echoes.

This possibility was introduced in the Season 15 Patch 3.2.1 notes. The same cache category can also contain a Mephisto Key, which is used for another activity. Neither item is guaranteed.

War Plans can help organize regular endgame activities, and Whispers may overlap those objectives. However, Echoing Hatred itself is not one of the standard War Plans activity nodes. See the Diablo 4 War Plans guide for the separate activity system.

How to Start Echoing Hatred

After obtaining Trace of Echoes, travel to Temis in Skovos. The entrance is the Sightless Eye, not a dungeon entrance or a Horadric Cube recipe.

  1. Obtain Trace of Echoes. Keep the entry item until your character or group is prepared.
  2. Travel to Temis. Locate the Sightless Eye in the Lord of Hatred hub.
  3. Follow the introductory quest if necessary. The first Trace can start The Resounding Scream, directing you toward Seer Nevma and the entrance.
  4. Interact with the Sightless Eye. Offer the Trace to access the Echoing Hatred arena.
  5. Inspect the arena. Identify Shrine positions and prepare your combat setup.
  6. Activate the Waking Call. Begin the survival encounter when ready.

Further attempts require another Trace of Echoes. Completing the introductory quest does not provide unlimited free entries. If your first Trace activates a quest and you cannot locate it as an ordinary inventory item, follow the displayed objective before assuming the item was lost.

Group play: Echoing Hatred was added to Diablo 4's Party Finder in Patch 3.0.2. You can search for a group, but confirm that someone has an available Trace and that everyone is ready before attempting entry. Party Finder availability does not guarantee that a listed group can start the activity immediately.

Echoing Hatred Waves and Overwhelm Mechanics

The Overwhelm meter is the central survival mechanic. As enemies spawn and remain alive, pressure increases. Defeating monsters helps keep the meter under control. If it fills completely, the attempt ends even if your character still has Life remaining.

This changes how you should approach combat. Avoiding damage for long periods is not enough: the character must continue killing enemies while surviving increasingly dangerous attacks.

  • Enemy accumulation: Too many surviving monsters push the arena toward Overwhelm.
  • Escalating difficulty: Later tiers contain stronger and more threatening enemy combinations.
  • Randomized waves: Enemy types and combinations can differ between attempts.
  • Boss overlaps: Multiple bosses may appear while ordinary monsters are still present.
  • Death: A fatal mistake can end a solo attempt before the Overwhelm meter is full.
  • Wave limit: Current progression is capped at Tier 150.

The encounter has its own escalating difficulty progression. Comfortably farming a particular Torment difficulty outside the arena does not mean your build can survive every Echoing Hatred tier.

Enemy Target Priority

When the arena becomes crowded, prioritize enemies that prevent you from maintaining a steady killing rate. Clear ordinary monster packs with area attacks, remove dangerous ranged or crowd-control threats, and damage durable bosses during safer openings.

Do not spend too long attacking a single boss while the Overwhelm meter rises. Likewise, avoid chasing isolated monsters across the arena if doing so interrupts your main damage rotation. Maintain consistent area damage and reposition only when necessary to survive dangerous attacks.

How to Use Shrines

Shrines provide temporary advantages during Echoing Hatred. For a normal progression attempt, saving useful effects for difficult waves can be more valuable than activating everything immediately. Locate the Shrines before combat becomes chaotic.

There is one major exception: the Howling Mouth of Madness secret requires four specific Shrine activations during narrow tier windows. If you want that cosmetic, follow the puzzle sequence rather than saving those Shrines for later.

Best Build Preparation for Echoing Hatred

A strong boss-killing build is not automatically a strong Echoing Hatred build. The arena demands sustained area damage, reliable boss damage, defensive stability, resource recovery, and mobility. Exact class rankings can change with balance patches, so evaluate your build against these requirements instead of assuming one named build will always be best.

  1. Sustained area damage: Use attacks that repeatedly clear groups without depending entirely on long-cooldown bursts.
  2. Boss damage: Maintain enough single-target damage to handle bosses while controlling surrounding enemies.
  3. Survivability: Improve appropriate Armor, resistances, damage reduction, barriers, Fortify, healing, or other class defenses.
  4. Resource sustain: Ensure that your main damage rotation remains available throughout prolonged combat.
  5. Mobility and crowd-control recovery: Preserve reliable ways to reposition or escape effects that interrupt your attacks.
  6. Cooldown management: Avoid spending all defensive abilities simultaneously unless the situation demands it.

Before consuming a rare Trace, test your build in demanding regular content. If monster packs survive too long, improve area damage. If overlapping bosses kill you, strengthen defenses. If the character repeatedly runs out of resources, fix the combat rotation before entering.

Check your equipment affixes, important Paragon Glyphs, Masterworking, Talisman setup, and defensive consistency. There is no officially guaranteed gear threshold for Tier 60 or Tier 150, so preparation should focus on correcting the weaknesses you can actually observe.

Echoing Hatred Wave Strategies

Combat becomes increasingly demanding as the tiers advance. The following phases are practical strategy recommendations, not official reward brackets.

Early Waves: Positioning and Preparation

Use the opening tiers to establish your damage rotation, identify Shrine locations, and find a comfortable position. Avoid wasting powerful cooldowns on enemies that your regular attacks can eliminate.

If you are attempting the secret portal, prioritize the first Shrine activation during Tiers 1–9. Do not advance so quickly that you miss the required window.

Middle Waves: Elite and Boss Pressure

As stronger enemies appear, maintain area damage while handling dangerous Elite modifiers and boss attacks. Use crowd control to create safe openings, reposition when several effects overlap, and prevent ordinary monsters from accumulating around durable enemies.

When Overwhelm rises, clearing surrounding monsters usually takes priority over continuing uninterrupted single-target damage against a boss.

Late Waves: Sustained Damage and Survival

Deep into the encounter, resource shortages and gaps in defensive uptime become increasingly dangerous. Preserve emergency protection, keep persistent damage effects active when your build supports them, and avoid unnecessary periods without attacking.

If you fail, identify whether insufficient damage allowed enemies to accumulate or whether incoming damage prevented you from maintaining your rotation. These problems require different improvements before the next attempt.

Echoing Hatred Rewards

Echoing Hatred provides rewards based on the progression achieved before the encounter ends. Blizzard confirms that surviving longer improves reward opportunities, but has not published a complete tier-by-tier payout table or a guaranteed Mythic Unique reward for reaching a particular tier.

Important Echoing Hatred rewards
RewardAcquisitionNotes
Equipment and general lootEnd-of-run reward distributionPotential character upgrades; results depend on the run
Gold and crafting materialsReported among activity rewardsUseful for ordinary endgame progression
Unique and possible Mythic itemsPossible loot outcomesNo officially guaranteed Mythic per attempt
Talisman itemsReported among endgame loot outcomesPotential Charms and Seals
Goblin's PlunderBonus loot bags associated with Treasure Goblins killed during the encounterAdditional loot opportunities
The Crab with the KnifeComplete a run after reaching at least Tier 60Pet reward from the Pandemonium achievement
Howling Mouth of MadnessComplete the secret Shrine sequence and defeat FlotsamExclusive Town Portal cosmetic

Community gameplay guides document the general reward categories and bonus bags, but they should not be interpreted as an official fixed loot table. Reaching Tier 150 does not establish a guaranteed Mythic payout or an additional unpublished reward.

Treasure Goblins and Goblin's Plunder

Treasure Goblins may appear during the encounter. Defeating them can add Goblin's Plunder bags to the rewards collected after the run. However, chasing a Goblin is not always worthwhile if it allows ordinary enemies to overwhelm the arena. Kill one quickly when possible, but maintain control of the encounter first.

How to Unlock The Crab with the Knife Pet

The Crab with the Knife is earned through the Pandemonium achievement. Its condition is to complete an Echoing Hatred run after reaching at least Tier 60.

The achievement also awards the Echoing title prefix and Breach title suffix. You do not need to complete the hidden Shrine puzzle for this reward. If the pet is your main objective, prioritize reaching Tier 60 with a stable build instead of risking the attempt on optional secrets.

How to Unlock the Howling Mouth of Madness Portal

The Howling Mouth of Madness Town Portal cosmetic is tied to the hidden Only the Mad Run Free achievement. Players discovered that the secret requires four Shrines to be activated in a particular order and within specific tier ranges.

Secret Shrine activation sequence
StepRequired tierShrineAction
11–9Protection ShrineActivate during the opening tiers
210–14Artillery ShrineActivate before Tier 15
315–19Lethal ShrineActivate before Tier 20
420–24Channeling ShrineComplete the final Shrine activation

After activating the correct Shrines in order, shadowy Treasure Goblins appear, including one named Flotsam. Defeat Flotsam to complete the secret and unlock the portal cosmetic. The sequence is documented through community discoveries and player reports on the Diablo IV forums.

The tier windows are essential. Activating a correct Shrine outside its required range does not complete that step. Identify the Shrine positions before starting and avoid accidentally advancing beyond the next window.

The portal and crab pet are separate goals. You can attempt both during one run, but the portal does not require Tier 60, and the pet does not require the Shrine sequence.

How to Collect Echoing Hatred Loot Safely

When the encounter ends, the arena provides access to the rewards earned. Community guides identify the Remnants of Legend reward container and possible Goblin's Plunder bags.

Do not teleport away immediately. Large runs can produce substantial amounts of loot, and leaving the instance before collecting it can result in lost items. Players have reported being unable to return after teleporting out.

The end-of-run area includes a Merchant, Blacksmith, and Stash for managing equipment. Use these facilities to sort or store items before leaving. Inspect the ground and open relevant reward containers before ending your visit.

Common Echoing Hatred Mistakes

  • Expecting infinite waves: The current cap is 150.
  • Confusing Echoing Hatred with Echo of Hatred: Echo of Hatred is the separate Lilith encounter.
  • Expecting a guaranteed Trace: No confirmed fixed drop percentage or farming time exists.
  • Ignoring Whisper Keys Caches: They gained a small chance to contain Trace of Echoes in Patch 3.2.1.
  • Using a pure boss-killing build: Insufficient area damage can cause Overwhelm even when boss damage is excellent.
  • Retreating too long: Surviving without killing enemies allows pressure to accumulate.
  • Wasting Shrines: Early activation can reduce their later usefulness or ruin the portal puzzle.
  • Chasing Goblins recklessly: Bonus loot is not worth losing control of the arena.
  • Forgetting Flotsam: The secret portal requires defeating the named Goblin after the Shrine sequence.
  • Leaving loot behind: Sort rewards inside the arena before teleporting away.
  • Assuming guaranteed Mythics: No official per-run Mythic guarantee has been established for Echoing Hatred.

Is Echoing Hatred Worth Farming?

Echoing Hatred is worthwhile when you already have a Trace and a sufficiently prepared endgame character. It offers a demanding survival challenge, potentially valuable loot, a defined Tier 60 pet reward, and a secret portal cosmetic.

However, Trace of Echoes is too rare to treat the activity as a predictable, repeatedly available farming route. Players needing specific equipment or crafting resources may find ordinary endgame activities more reliable. Echoing Hatred is better approached as an occasional high-value attempt that rewards preparation and sustained performance.

Players considering Echoing Hatred run assistance should verify the exact service conditions separately. A service listing does not establish an in-game guaranteed Mythic drop or a different entry rule.

Diablo 4 Echoing Hatred FAQ

Can Eternal characters enter Echoing Hatred?

Echoing Hatred is permanent Lord of Hatred expansion content, not an activity exclusive to Season 15. Eligible characters still require the relevant expansion access and entry conditions.

Does Echoing Hatred have unlimited waves?

No. Patch 3.1.0 introduced a maximum of 150 waves on June 30, 2026.

Can Trace of Echoes drop from Whisper rewards?

Yes. Since Patch 3.2.1, Keys Caches from Whispers have a small chance to contain Trace of Echoes or a Mephisto Key. Neither item is guaranteed.

Does every party member need a Trace?

Echoing Hatred supports group play and Party Finder, but coordinate the entrance with the party before committing a Trace. Do not assume that joining a listed group guarantees an available entry.

Do I need Tier 150 for the exclusive cosmetics?

No. The Crab with the Knife requires a completed run reaching at least Tier 60. Howling Mouth of Madness requires the separate early-tier Shrine sequence and defeating Flotsam.

Final Echoing Hatred Strategy

Farm Trace of Echoes while completing useful endgame activities, especially those containing frequent Elites and Champions. Use Whisper Keys Caches as an additional opportunity, but do not expect guaranteed drops. Before entering, prepare a build capable of maintaining area damage while surviving overlapping threats. Inside the arena, control Overwhelm, manage Shrines according to your goal, and avoid sacrificing consistent kills for unnecessary risks. Tier 60 is the defined target for The Crab with the Knife, while the secret portal requires precise Shrine timing and defeating Flotsam. Beyond those objectives, push only as far as your character can reliably survive and collect every reward before leaving.
