Need Help Progressing in Diablo Immortal?

Diablo Immortal Legendary Essences are the special powers attached to Legendary Equipment. A Legendary Essence can modify a skill, change how an ability behaves, add a new damage effect, improve survivability, or create the core interaction of a build. The most important part of the system is that you do not need to keep wearing the original Legendary item: extract its Essence through Zamina in Westmarch, then inherit that power onto a stronger Legendary item occupying the same equipment slot.

What Legendary Essences Do in Diablo Immortal

Every class has Legendary Equipment with class-specific powers. A Legendary item may increase the damage of a skill, convert its damage type, add crowd control, create a secondary effect, alter the skill’s range, or change the way the skill is used. Because several equipment slots can modify the same build, Legendary Essences are the main way to turn a collection of ordinary skills into a functional PvE or PvP setup.

Legendary Essences are different from Legendary Gems, Set Items, normal attributes, and Combat Rating. An Essence modifies a Legendary item’s power. A Legendary Gem provides resonance and additional effects. A Set Item contributes to a set bonus, while Combat Rating mainly determines how effectively your character performs against content with a higher rating requirement.

The practical purpose of Essence Transfer is simple: keep the strongest available item for its attributes and upgrade level while preserving the Legendary power your build needs.

How to Unlock Essence Transfer

Essence Transfer becomes available after you obtain enough Legendary Equipment to begin comparing items in the same equipment category. The feature is accessed through Zamina, the Essence Transfer merchant in Westmarch near the Rakkis Plaza waypoint.

Zamina provides two main services:

  • Extract: permanently removes a Legendary Essence from a Legendary item and stores the power in your Essence collection.
  • Inherit: applies a stored Essence to another Legendary item of the same equipment type.

The original item is destroyed when its Essence is extracted. Inheriting an Essence does not destroy the receiving item, and the inherited power can be changed later. The receiving item keeps its own attributes, sockets, and upgrade progress while adopting the inherited Legendary power, name, and appearance.

How to Extract a Legendary Essence

  1. Travel to Westmarch and speak with Zamina.
  2. Open the Extract interface.
  3. Select the equipment category containing the Legendary item.
  4. Choose the item whose Legendary power you want to preserve.
  5. Confirm the extraction and pay the displayed Gold cost.
  6. Check the Essence collection to verify that the power is now available for inheritance.

Do not extract an item simply because you want to salvage it. First check whether its Essence is already unlocked and whether the item has useful attributes, a superior Combat Rating value, an upgrade rank, or a build-specific affix that you may still need.

Legendary Equipment obtained in the current server difficulty or a higher difficulty can also contribute to the current Essence progression and loyalty systems when the item is extracted. The exact reward depends on the item and the live version of the Essence system, so use the in-game extraction screen as the final authority before confirming.

How to Inherit a Legendary Essence

  1. Speak with Zamina and choose Inherit.
  2. Select the Legendary item that will receive the power.
  3. Choose a compatible Essence from the collection.
  4. Review the preview showing the change to the item.
  5. Confirm the inheritance.

An Essence can only be inherited by a Legendary item occupying the appropriate equipment slot. A power from a main-hand weapon cannot be placed on a chest, shoulder, head, or off-hand item. The interface filters incompatible powers automatically, but checking the equipment slot remains useful when planning several builds.

An inherited item is marked with an orange flame indicator. The marker identifies the item as having a transferred power; it does not mean that the item has better attributes or a higher Combat Rating than another item.

What Changes When You Inherit an Essence?

Item ElementWhat Happens After Inheritance
Legendary powerReplaced by the selected Essence.
Item nameChanges to the name associated with the inherited Essence.
Item appearanceChanges to the appearance associated with the inherited Legendary power.
AttributesRemain those of the receiving item.
Sockets and upgrade progressRemain on the receiving item.
Original powerRemains available as an option when you revert or change the inheritance.

Essence Transfer does not combine two Legendary powers into one item. The receiving item uses one active Legendary power for that slot. If a build requires several different powers from the same equipment category, save separate Armory loadouts or use different item configurations rather than expecting the effects to stack.

When You Should Extract a Legendary Item

Extract a Legendary item when you have confirmed that its power is useful for your class, build, or a future activity setup and the item itself is no longer your best choice. In most cases, extracting a duplicate or a lower-stat version is safer than extracting the strongest copy currently equipped.

Use this order when deciding what to do with a new Legendary drop:

  1. Compare the new item’s Combat Rating and attributes with your equipped item.
  2. Check whether the item has an exceptional or otherwise valuable attribute combination.
  3. Check whether its Legendary Essence is already unlocked.
  4. Equip the item if it is a real upgrade.
  5. Transfer your preferred Essence onto the new item if necessary.
  6. Extract the old item only after you no longer need its stats or power.

Do not delay all upgrades while waiting for a perfect Essence combination. During leveling and early Paragon progression, higher Combat Rating and better attributes usually provide more immediate value than preserving a temporary item. You can rebuild the Legendary setup later through Zamina.

Essence Extraction, Salvaging, and Upgrade Materials

Legendary Equipment is handled differently from ordinary equipment. When you have not yet collected an Essence, extracting the item records its Legendary power. Current versions of the system also provide upgrade-material benefits through Legendary extraction, so you no longer have to treat obtaining the Essence and gaining materials as mutually exclusive outcomes.

After the Essence is already collected, duplicate Legendary items can still be valuable. Depending on the current difficulty and live system rules, duplicate extractions may contribute to Essence Mastery, loyalty progress, or related collection rewards. Check the extraction result before confirming because the displayed reward can vary according to the Essence and the item’s availability in the active pool.

Once an Essence is unlocked and the item has no useful attributes, keeping every duplicate in your inventory is unnecessary. Extract or salvage it according to the reward shown by the current in-game interface.

Essence Mastery and Loyalty Progress

Modern Diablo Immortal progression uses more than simple one-time Essence collection. Repeated extraction of the same Legendary power can contribute to Essence Mastery, increasing the effectiveness of Legendary Attributes as mastery improves. The exact progression and eligible items can change as new difficulties and updates are introduced.

Essence extraction can also award loyalty progress. Loyalty systems are designed to reduce the frustration of relying entirely on random Legendary drops: extracting Legendary Equipment advances a collection resource that can eventually be used to obtain an uncollected Essence or select from available choices.

Use the in-game Zamina interface to determine whether an item grants regular loyalty progress, current-difficulty progress, Legacy progress, or only the normal extraction reward. Do not assume that an older Legendary item contributes in exactly the same way as an item obtained from the current difficulty.

Best Essence Priorities for New Characters

New characters should prioritize complete, functional skill interactions rather than collecting every Essence immediately. Choose powers that improve the skills you actually use and that work together in the same activity.

  • Open-world farming: prioritize movement speed, wide-area damage, short cooldowns, and effects that reduce the number of casts needed to defeat ordinary enemies.
  • Dungeons: prioritize reliable area damage, elite damage, group utility, and effects that remain useful against repeated packs.
  • Helliquary raids: prioritize sustained single-target damage, survivability, and powers that function consistently against bosses.
  • Challenge Rifts: prioritize damage scaling, defensive layers, crowd control, and a rotation that remains stable under pressure.
  • Battlegrounds: prioritize mobility, immunity or resistance tools, crowd control, burst windows, and survivability rather than copying a purely PvE damage setup.

Do not choose an Essence solely because its tooltip shows a large damage increase. A power that changes a skill may be stronger when paired with another Essence, Set Item bonus, or skill interaction than a larger-looking standalone bonus.

How to Build an Essence Combination

Start with the skill or mechanic that defines your build. Then identify which equipment slots can improve that mechanic and select powers that cover different needs instead of adding several effects that compete for the same condition.

  1. Select the main damage skill or primary control tool.
  2. Choose an Essence that improves its damage, range, area, or reliability.
  3. Add a second power that improves the skill’s uptime or creates a useful interaction.
  4. Reserve at least one slot for defense, mobility, crowd control, or resource management when the activity requires it.
  5. Test the combination in open-world content before committing it to a dungeon, raid, or PvP loadout.

For example, a damage-over-time build usually benefits from effects that extend uptime, increase the number of affected targets, or improve damage against enemies already suffering from the condition. A channeling build may instead need protection during the channel, range improvement, cooldown reduction, or a way to reposition without losing the attack.

PvE and PvP Essence Choices Are Not the Same

PvE enemies usually allow you to maintain a predictable rotation and attack from a known distance. PvP opponents interrupt casts, change targets, use immunity effects, and punish slow animations. As a result, the best PvE Essence is often not the best Battleground Essence.

ActivityEssence Characteristics to PrioritizeCommon Trade-Off
Open-world farmingMovement, area damage, fast clearingLess boss damage or defense
DungeonsPack clearing, elite damage, consistent rotationLess mobility than a farming setup
Helliquary raidsSustained boss damage, uptime, survivabilityLess area damage
Challenge RiftsScaling damage, control, defensive reliabilitySlower clear speed
BattlegroundsMobility, crowd control, burst, survivalLower damage against stationary PvE targets

In PvP, replace slow or easily interrupted powers when possible. A smaller theoretical damage increase is often worthwhile if the Essence helps you reach a target, escape crowd control, survive a burst window, or finish a cast safely.

Use a separate PvP Armory loadout rather than repeatedly rebuilding your primary PvE equipment. Battleground starting areas also support convenient build changes, allowing you to adjust your setup before entering a match.

Using Armory Loadouts with Legendary Essences

The Armory is the most efficient way to manage multiple Essence combinations. Save separate configurations for open-world farming, dungeons, raids, Challenge Rifts, and Battlegrounds. Include the associated skills, Legendary powers, Set Items, Paragon selection, and other loadout choices where applicable.

Keep your best high-attribute Legendary items as the foundation of several loadouts. Change the inherited Essence and save the configuration instead of storing a separate physical item for every possible build. This reduces inventory pressure and makes activity-specific switching much faster.

Before entering group content, confirm that the Armory loadout actually equipped the intended powers. A saved setup may be missing an item, use a different skill configuration, or require a manual adjustment after a class change or equipment replacement.

F2P and Low-Spender Essence Strategy

Legendary Essences are one of the most accessible build systems for free-to-play players because the powers come from Legendary Equipment rather than requiring a paid currency purchase. The limitation is time and randomness: you can optimize the number and quality of farming opportunities, but you cannot guarantee a particular drop from ordinary Legendary loot.

  • Extract every useful, uncollected Essence before discarding the item.
  • Prioritize powers for one main PvE build before collecting niche alternatives.
  • Use loyalty progress to target missing powers when the active system offers that option.
  • Do not spend scarce resources chasing small improvements to a temporary item.
  • Keep a functional PvP setup only after your main PvE setup is stable.
  • Use the Armory to reuse strong equipment across activities.

Higher spending does not remove the need for good Essence planning. Resonance and Legendary Gems can increase account power, but they do not replace the correct skill interactions. A lower-Resonance character with a coherent Essence combination can perform more effectively in PvE than a character using mismatched Legendary powers.

Efficient Ways to Farm More Legendary Equipment

Legendary Equipment can come from normal gameplay, including open-world activities, dungeons, Elder Rifts, events, and other reward systems available to your character. The best source depends on your current difficulty, activity speed, group availability, and whether you also need Set Items, Battle Pass progress, materials, or other currencies.

Use targeted farming rather than repeating a slow activity solely because it can technically drop Legendary Equipment. A fast activity that also advances your other progression goals usually produces more practical value over a play session.

When farming for an Essence, remember that random drops are not guarantees. The correct approach is to increase the number of relevant attempts, extract duplicate powers for progression, and use loyalty options when available rather than assuming the next run will produce a particular item.

Common Legendary Essence Mistakes

MistakeWhy It HurtsBetter Approach
Extracting your only high-stat item immediatelyYou lose a useful upgrade or valuable attributes.Equip or compare the item first, then extract the weaker replacement.
Using a PvE setup in BattlegroundsSlow casts and low survivability are easily punished.Save a separate PvP loadout with mobility and defensive tools.
Keeping every duplicate Legendary itemInventory fills with items that provide no additional benefit.Check the Essence collection and extract or salvage duplicates appropriately.
Ignoring Essence combinationsSeveral individually strong powers may not support the same rotation.Build around one main skill interaction and test the complete setup.
Chasing perfect powers before upgrading Combat RatingProgression stalls while temporary gear is treated as permanent.Use good available Essences and replace equipment as stronger items drop.
Failing to check the extraction previewThe item may grant a different progression reward than expected.Review the displayed Essence, mastery, loyalty, and material rewards before confirming.

Practical Essence Management Routine

After each substantial farming session, identify Legendary items before visiting the Blacksmith. Compare each item with your equipped gear, inspect the Legendary power, and check the Essence collection through Zamina.

  1. Mark genuine attribute or Combat Rating upgrades for use.
  2. Extract uncollected powers that support your current class or future build.
  3. Extract duplicates when they advance Essence Mastery or loyalty progress.
  4. Salvage or otherwise process items whose power is already collected and whose attributes are not useful.
  5. Update the appropriate Armory loadout after replacing equipment.
  6. Recheck your activity-specific build before starting a dungeon, raid, Rift, or Battleground.

The strongest long-term approach is to treat Legendary Essences as a collection rather than as permanent individual items. Collect the powers that define your preferred builds, preserve your best-stat equipment, use inheritance whenever new upgrades appear, and maintain separate PvE and PvP configurations. This lets you adapt to new Legendary drops and balance changes without refarming an exact item every time your character improves.
