Need Help Progressing in Diablo Immortal?

Diablo Immortal Resonance is a progression system powered mainly by Legendary Gems. It increases the value of your equipped gear’s primary attributes, raises your character’s effective offensive and defensive power, unlocks visual wing rewards at higher thresholds, and can add extra gem slots through Gem Resonance. Resonance is valuable, but it is not the same as Combat Rating, Legendary Gem effects, Secondary Attributes, or player skill. A high-Resonance character can still perform poorly if the build, Combat Rating, set bonuses, or PvP setup is weak.

What Resonance does in Diablo Immortal

Your Resonance value appears in the character and inventory interfaces after you equip a Resonance-granting Legendary Gem. Resonance primarily improves the attributes supplied by equipped gear. Because gear attributes contribute to damage, Life, Combat Rating, Armor, Armor Penetration, Potency, Resistance, and other derived values, increasing Resonance can raise several parts of your character at the same time.

Resonance does not directly replace Combat Rating. Combat Rating determines how effectively you perform against content with a higher or lower recommended rating, while Resonance improves the value of your equipment and contributes to general character power. You should monitor both values rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.

Combat RatingPerformance against enemies and activities with different Combat Rating expectationsResonance, damage modifiers, crowd control, or class utility

How to increase Resonance

The main way to increase Resonance is to equip and upgrade Legendary Gems. Gem quality, star rating, rank, and the amount of Gem Power invested in the gem all influence the Resonance it provides. Five-Star Gems generally have the highest long-term Resonance potential, but a well-upgraded One-Star or Two-Star Gem can be more practical for a free-to-play or low-spending account.

  1. Equip Legendary Gems in all available slots. Empty slots provide no gem effect, Combat Rating, or Resonance. Fill early slots with useful One-Star or Two-Star Gems instead of waiting indefinitely for perfect Five-Star Gems.
  2. Upgrade the gems that support your actual build. Gem Power, duplicate gems, Platinum, and Telluric materials are limited. A useful gem at a higher rank is often better than an unranked gem with a higher theoretical ceiling.
  3. Improve gem quality when the investment is justified. Five-Star Gems with better quality have stronger long-term value, but upgrading quality can require substantial duplicates and Platinum. Do not sacrifice every useful gem in pursuit of a perfect quality roll.
  4. Unlock and use Gem Resonance when available. Some Legendary Gems can receive additional embedded gems after reaching the required rank and meeting the current unlock conditions.
  5. Awaken important Legendary equipment slots. Awakening can unlock additional effects and the ability to place Resonance Gems into the awakened item’s gem-resonance slots.
  6. Keep your gear current. Resonance multiplies the value of gear attributes, so outdated equipment reduces the benefit of a high Resonance score.

Legendary Gems and Resonance value

Every equipped Legendary Gem contributes to your character in several ways. The gem can provide Resonance, Combat Rating, a unique effect, and sometimes additional opportunities for Gem Resonance. These benefits should be evaluated together.

A gem that gives more Resonance but has no useful effect may be inferior to a lower-Resonance gem that dramatically improves your rotation. For example, a damage-over-time gem may be excellent for a sustained PvE build but less reliable in a short Battleground engagement. A defensive or crowd-control gem may produce less sheet damage but improve your survival and objective pressure in PvP.

One-Star Legendary Gems

One-Star Gems are usually the most accessible option for free-to-play players. They require fewer resources to rank and can provide efficient effects for basic attacks, skill damage, damage reduction, critical-hit builds, or general farming.

One-Star Gems are also useful as transitional gems. You can use them while collecting Gem Power and Platinum, then replace them gradually when a stronger build-defining gem becomes available. Do not dismantle every lower-star gem automatically; some inexpensive gems remain useful because they are easier to rank and can support Gem Resonance systems.

Two-Star Legendary Gems

Two-Star Gems often provide a practical balance between effect strength, Resonance, Combat Rating, and upgrade cost. They are especially attractive for accounts that want a stable PvE setup without relying on expensive Five-Star duplicates.

For many players, a group of well-ranked Two-Star Gems is more useful than several weak Five-Star Gems. This is because a Five-Star Gem’s theoretical value depends on its rank, quality, duplicates, and whether its effect actually fits your class and activity.

Five-Star Legendary Gems

Five-Star Gems have the highest long-term investment ceiling, but they are also the most demanding to upgrade. A low-quality Five-Star Gem can remain expensive to rank while providing an effect that does not fit your build.

Before investing heavily, check four points:

  • Does the effect activate reliably with your class and skill rotation?
  • Does the gem perform well in the activity you play most?
  • Can you obtain enough copies or Gem Power to continue ranking it?
  • Would a cheaper One-Star or Two-Star alternative produce better short-term progress?

Do not judge a Five-Star Gem by Resonance alone. A gem with a strong effect at a realistic rank can outperform a higher-Resonance gem that rarely activates or conflicts with your build.

What are Gem Resonance slots?

Gem Resonance allows certain equipped Legendary Gems to hold additional Legendary Gems inside their Resonance slots. The embedded gems contribute to the host gem’s Resonance progression and can help activate additional power without replacing the host gem’s primary effect.

The number of available Gem Resonance slots depends on the current gem rank and live system rules. Recent updates have made some Gem Resonance slots available earlier than before, so older guides may show outdated rank requirements. Always check the gem’s current in-game interface before planning a long-term upgrade path.

Gem Resonance is not the same as equipping six normal Legendary Gems. The host gem remains the primary gem in your equipment slot, while the embedded gems support its Resonance progression. The embedded gems may need to meet specific rank, type, or Gem Power requirements before the host gem becomes active.

How to use Gem Resonance efficiently

  • Use embedded gems that you can upgrade consistently rather than sacrificing your entire account’s resources for a temporary threshold.
  • Prioritize host gems that you expect to keep for a long time.
  • Check whether removing an embedded gem will make the host gem dormant or reduce its usable rank.
  • Keep copies of build-defining gems before using them as upgrade materials.
  • Do not assume that the most expensive embedded gem is automatically the best option for your class.

A dormant gem can retain value as an upgrade resource or future build component, but it may not provide its full active effect until the required embedded-gem conditions are restored. Review the confirmation window carefully before using auto-craft or consuming higher-quality gems.

Awakening and Resonance

Awakening applies to a specific Legendary equipment slot rather than to your entire character. The process requires an eligible Legendary Gem at the required rank to be placed in an eligible Legendary item, followed by the appropriate awakening material and cost. Awakening improves the item slot and unlocks additional Resonance-related functionality.

An awakened item can gain an Awakened Power and access to Gem Resonance slots. The exact Awakened Power depends on the equipment slot and the Legendary Essence attached to the item. Because awakening resources are limited, choose a slot that you use in your main build and plan to keep for a reasonable period.

Which equipment slot should you awaken first?

Awaken the slot that gives the greatest combination of build value and long-term stability. A good first slot usually has a Legendary Essence that is central to your main PvE or PvP build and is unlikely to be replaced immediately.

Do not awaken an item only because it has the highest temporary Combat Rating. A replacement item with a stronger Essence may force you to spend additional resources again. It is usually better to awaken a stable build-defining slot than a piece you expect to replace during the next farming session.

Resonance wings and visual rewards

Higher Resonance thresholds unlock cosmetic wing rewards and additional wing-related progression. Wings are visual milestones and should not be treated as a direct measure of skill, build quality, or PvP ability.

Current wing thresholds and available tiers can change when the live game adds new Legendary Gem progression. Recent updates have adjusted wing reward thresholds and expanded the Resonance ceiling, so launch-era wing charts are no longer reliable. Use the current in-game Resonance or wing interface when checking the next threshold.

Wing progression may also involve additional gem slots or related bonuses at higher tiers. These systems increase the importance of planning your Legendary Gem upgrades rather than spending every duplicate immediately on a single gem.

Resonance versus Combat Rating

Resonance and Combat Rating are closely related but serve different purposes. Resonance improves the attributes supplied by your equipment, while Combat Rating is a direct progression check used throughout PvE and other content.

If you are below the recommended Combat Rating for an activity, increasing Resonance may help, but it is not always the most efficient solution. Replacing low-rating gear, improving Helliquary progression, advancing Paragon progression, upgrading equipment, and obtaining better items can produce a larger immediate improvement.

ProblemBest first responseWhy
Below an activity’s Combat Rating expectationUpgrade gear, Helliquary progression, Paragon progression, and equipment ranksThese sources directly improve the rating used by content checks

Best Resonance priorities for free-to-play players

Free-to-play players should treat Resonance as a gradual account-wide project. The most efficient approach is usually to maintain useful low-cost Legendary Gems, collect Gem Power through regular activities, and spend Platinum carefully rather than chasing a perfect Five-Star setup.

  1. Fill every Legendary Gem slot. An empty slot is almost always worse than a modestly ranked gem.
  2. Build a reliable One-Star and Two-Star foundation. Choose effects that match your primary class and activity.
  3. Use all regular sources of Legendary Crests and Telluric materials. Save scarce resources for gems that fit your build.
  4. Craft deliberately. Do not convert valuable gem materials into a gem you will not use.
  5. Use Platinum for durable upgrades. Prioritize needed gem copies and important normal gems over minor short-term purchases.
  6. Awaken only after choosing a stable main slot. Avoid repeatedly awakening temporary items.

Free-to-play accounts should not measure progress only by wing thresholds. A lower-Resonance character with current gear, appropriate Combat Rating, useful set bonuses, and a coherent skill setup can clear substantial PvE content efficiently.

Low-spender and higher-investment Resonance planning

Low-spending players can usually benefit from a hybrid approach: maintain cost-efficient Two-Star Gems, add selected Five-Star Gems with reliable effects, and upgrade gems in a controlled order. Avoid spreading Gem Power across too many unfinished projects.

Higher-investment players have more flexibility, but the same decision rule applies: select gems by activity and build function before chasing maximum Resonance. A Five-Star Gem that improves your class’s main damage pattern, survival, or crowd control is generally more valuable than a purely decorative Resonance increase.

Before replacing a gem, compare the complete account impact. Include the lost Resonance, Combat Rating, gem effect, Gem Resonance eligibility, duplicate copies, and cost of rebuilding the replacement. A replacement that looks stronger on paper may reduce your performance until it reaches a comparable rank.

Resonance in PvE

Resonance is most straightforward in PvE because higher attributes generally improve damage, Life, and clear consistency. However, PvE performance still depends heavily on the activity.

  • Open-world farming: Favor movement, area damage, cooldown reduction, and effects that activate against groups of enemies.
  • Dungeons: Use reliable burst or sustained damage and avoid effects that require unusually long fights to reach full value.
  • Helliquary raids: Prioritize consistent single-target damage, survivability, and mechanics that remain active against bosses.
  • Challenge Rifts: Build around the class’s strongest damage pattern while maintaining enough defense to survive elite packs and Rift bosses.

For PvE, increasing Resonance is worthwhile after your build already has current gear, correct Essences, useful set bonuses, and adequate Combat Rating. If one of those foundations is missing, fix the foundation first.

Resonance in PvP and Battlegrounds

Resonance matters in PvP because it improves the attributes on your gear, but Battleground performance is not determined by Resonance alone. Matchmaking, team composition, objective control, crowd-control resistance, mobility, positioning, and build selection all influence the result.

PvP builds often sacrifice some PvE damage for survivability, control, mobility, or disruption. A gem that produces excellent damage against monsters may be less useful against players who cleanse, disengage, use immunity, or focus you before the effect activates.

Use Resonance as part of a PvP power budget rather than as the complete strategy. If you are repeatedly dying before using your rotation, defensive effects and positioning are likely more valuable than a small Resonance increase. If you survive but cannot pressure objectives, improve crowd control, mobility, and target selection.

How to farm resources for Resonance

Legendary Gems and Gem Power come from several sources, including Elder Rifts, Legendary Crests, crafting and conversion systems, events, and market activity where applicable. The exact rewards and availability can change with updates, but the efficient principle remains the same: complete repeatable activities that provide the materials your current gem plan needs.

  • Use available Legendary Crests in Elder Rifts when you have a clear gem objective.
  • Collect free and event-based gem materials rather than ignoring small rewards.
  • Save Platinum for duplicates or upgrades that advance a planned gem.
  • Check current event rules before spending resources because temporary modified drop tables may favor particular gems.
  • Use the in-game gem interface to confirm upgrade requirements before consuming copies.

Random gem systems cannot guarantee a particular Five-Star Gem or quality unless the current activity explicitly provides a selection or guarantee. Farming improves your number of attempts and available materials; it does not remove randomness from ordinary drops.

Common Resonance mistakes

MistakeWhy it hurtsBetter approach
Chasing Resonance while below Combat RatingYou may gain attributes but remain unable to enter or efficiently clear contentUpgrade gear, Helliquary, Paragon, and equipment ranks first
Using every gem as upgrade materialYou can destroy copies needed for a future build or Gem Resonance slotLock or reserve build-defining gems before crafting
Equipping the highest-Resonance gem regardless of effectThe gem may not match your skills or activityCompare total build performance, not Resonance in isolation
Awakening a temporary itemYou may need to pay again when replacing the EssenceAwaken a stable, central equipment slot
Copying old Resonance chartsGem Resonance slots and wing thresholds can changeVerify current requirements in the live game interface
Assuming high Resonance guarantees PvP winsPositioning, matchmaking, team play, and objectives remain decisiveUse a dedicated PvP loadout and play for objectives

A practical Resonance upgrade order

For most accounts, the following order gives better results than rushing a single expensive gem:

  1. Reach the required Combat Rating for your main activities.
  2. Fill every Legendary Gem slot with an effect that fits your class.
  3. Rank your most useful One-Star and Two-Star Gems to a stable level.
  4. Replace weak gems only when the replacement has a clear gameplay benefit.
  5. Build Gem Power reserves for gems you intend to keep.
  6. Upgrade one or two core Five-Star Gems instead of spreading resources across every available gem.
  7. Unlock Gem Resonance on long-term host gems when the embedded-gem cost is manageable.
  8. Awaken a stable Legendary equipment slot that supports your main build.
  9. Chase higher Resonance thresholds and wing rewards after your core PvE or PvP setup is complete.

The best Resonance target depends on your account, not on a universal number. A new character should prioritize functional gems and Combat Rating. A developed PvE account can optimize gem effects and Gem Resonance. A Battleground-focused account should compare Resonance gains against survivability, crowd control, mobility, and the cost of maintaining a separate PvP loadout.

How to decide whether a Resonance upgrade is worth it

Before spending Gem Power, ask what the upgrade changes immediately. If the upgrade increases Resonance but removes a gem effect that powers your main rotation, the trade may be negative. If it unlocks a Gem Resonance slot, improves a core skill interaction, or raises both Resonance and a valuable effect, the investment is easier to justify.

  • For new characters: fill slots and obtain reliable effects before pursuing expensive quality upgrades.
  • For F2P accounts: prioritize efficient One-Star and Two-Star Gems, free materials, and stable awakenings.
  • For low-spenders: combine cost-efficient gems with carefully selected Five-Star Gems.
  • For high-Resonance accounts: optimize gem effects, quality, Gem Resonance, activity-specific loadouts, and wing progression.
  • For PvP players: value survival and control as highly as raw Resonance.
  • For PvE players: compare Resonance against Combat Rating, clear speed, boss damage, and farming efficiency.

Resonance is best understood as a multiplier on a complete character rather than a replacement for one. Keep your gear current, maintain sufficient Combat Rating, use Legendary Gems that match your skills, and invest in Gem Resonance or Awakening only when the long-term build plan is clear.
