Nebulous Voidcores are Midnight’s bonus-roll resource for obtaining an additional random item after eligible endgame activities. A bonus roll does not let you select a specific item. It gives you another chance at an item appropriate for the activity and your Loot Specialization. Items obtained through a Nebulous Voidcore remain tied to the equivalent Great Vault item level for that activity.

How a Nebulous Voidcore Bonus Roll Works
- Complete eligible content such as a raid encounter or another activity that supports bonus rolls.
- Defeat the boss or finish the activity and wait for the bonus-roll prompt.
- Choose to spend a Nebulous Voidcore if you want another loot attempt.
- The game rolls for an item from the relevant activity’s loot pool.
- The result is determined by your Loot Specialization and the reward level associated with the content.
The extra roll is separate from the normal loot awarded by the boss or activity. Spending a Voidcore does not replace your ordinary loot chance, and receiving no item from the normal reward does not prevent you from using a bonus roll when the activity offers one.
A Voidcore is a chance at additional equipment, not a guaranteed drop. It can produce an item from the activity’s eligible loot table, but it cannot guarantee a weapon, trinket, tier piece or a particular stat combination.

What Changed for Midnight Season 2
Nebulous Voidcores Enter the Great Vault Immediately
In Season 2, Nebulous Voidcores are available as a Great Vault reward option from the beginning of the season. This creates a direct choice between taking another piece of equipment and taking a resource that can be used to target additional activity loot.
The choice is especially relevant when your Vault contains several low-value options, when you are searching for a specific raid item, or when your character already has strong items in the available slots. The Voidcore option does not provide a guaranteed replacement for a missing item, so players should compare the value of the entire Vault before selecting it.
Raid Bonus Rolls Cost One Voidcore
Patch 12.1 reduces the cost of rolling for a raid item from two Nebulous Voidcores to one. This change applies to raid bonus rolls and makes each Voidcore more flexible for players targeting weapons, trinkets, tier-related gear or other raid drops.
The reduced cost does not turn the roll into a targeted purchase. It only lowers the number of Voidcores consumed when you request an additional raid loot attempt.
Orin Straylight Adds a Later Weekly Source
Orin Straylight relocates near the Catalyst in Silvermoon and learns to weave Nebulous Voidcores from void energy. Beginning in the eighth week of Midnight Season 2, he can provide one additional Nebulous Voidcore per week.
This source is delayed rather than available on the first day of the season. The exact quest steps, currency requirements and interaction details should be checked in-game after the system becomes available, because those values are not fully finalized in the current pre-release information.
Where Nebulous Voidcores Come From
The Nebulous Voidcore system is connected to the Great Vault and high-level endgame activities. Patch 12.1 confirms the Great Vault option from the start of Season 2 and the additional weekly source from Orin Straylight in Week 8.
The existing bonus-roll structure also allows Voidcores to be used after supported activities. In Midnight Season 1, the system supported raid bosses, Mythic+ dungeons, Bountiful Delves and Nightmare-difficulty Prey Hunts. The exact Season 2 activity list and any changes to its limits should be confirmed from the live interface once Patch 12.1 launches.

How Item Level Works on a Bonus Roll
Nebulous Voidcore loot is not automatically the highest item level available in the game. Its power is aligned with the Great Vault reward associated with the activity that generated the roll.
For example, a bonus roll connected to a lower-difficulty raid does not use the item level of Mythic raid loot simply because the character owns a Voidcore. The reward level is determined by the content that generated the roll, just as the related Great Vault row is determined by the content completed.
Patch 12.1 also changes raid Great Vault rewards. LFR, Normal and Heroic raid choices move to the first step of the next harder upgrade track, while Mythic raid choices are awarded at Myth 6/6 except for Very Rare items and loot from the final two bosses. Those latter items are awarded at the equivalent of Myth 9. These changes describe raid Great Vault rewards and should not be treated as a universal item-level rule for every bonus roll.
How Loot Specialization Affects the Result
Bonus rolls use your Loot Specialization when determining eligible equipment. Before spending a Voidcore, check the specialization selected in the character’s loot settings.
- Use the specialization that can receive the weapon, armor or trinket you are targeting.
- Change Loot Specialization before the activity ends if you need a different loot table.
- Remember that a specialization change does not guarantee a specific boss item.
- For class-set targets, use the appropriate loot specialization and consider whether the item can later be converted through the Catalyst.
Changing Loot Specialization is useful for narrowing the eligible table, but it cannot remove every unwanted result. Raid bosses can still offer several items for the same specialization, and bonus rolls remain random.
When Should You Spend a Nebulous Voidcore?
The strongest use of a Voidcore is usually an activity whose loot table contains an item that remains valuable for your character. Because the roll is random, spend the resource where the available table has several useful outcomes rather than where only one highly specific item would help.
Use a Raid Roll When the Boss Has Multiple Valuable Drops
Raid bonus rolls become more attractive in Season 2 because the cost falls to one Voidcore. They are particularly useful when a boss can drop an important weapon, trinket, tier-related item or upgrade for your current build.
Do not assume that a bonus roll is guaranteed to produce a boss-specific chase item. If your character has several open equipment slots, the roll may be worthwhile; if only one item is an upgrade, the chance is much less reliable.
Compare the Great Vault Before Taking a Voidcore
A Voidcore from the Great Vault is a flexible resource, but it is not always better than a direct upgrade. Choose the Voidcore when the available equipment choices are duplicates, poor itemization or otherwise unlikely to improve your character.
If the Vault contains a high-value weapon, trinket, tier piece or large item-level upgrade, taking the equipment may provide more immediate progress than converting the choice into another random roll.
Keep the Content Difficulty in Mind
Because bonus-roll item level follows the relevant Great Vault reward level, spending a Voidcore on low-level content does not create Mythic-level gear. Use the highest eligible activity you can complete reliably when the goal is character power, while remembering that a higher-level table can also contain more competitive loot and may not guarantee the slot you need.
Nebulous Voidcores and the Catalyst
A bonus-roll item can become a class-set item if it occupies an eligible Catalyst slot. Patch 12.1 improves this interaction: class-set armor inherits the secondary and tertiary stats, along with certain special cantrip effects, from the item used in the conversion.
This makes well-itemized non-set armor more valuable than it was in Season 1. Before converting a bonus-roll item, compare its original secondary stats and any cantrip effect with the set piece you would create. The conversion still follows the Catalyst’s eligible slots and current charge rules.
A Voidcore does not create a tier piece directly unless the rolled item is already a class-set item or is eligible for Catalyst conversion. The resource and the Catalyst remain separate systems:

Do Not Save Season 1 Voidcores for Season 2
Season 1 Nebulous Voidcores are converted to gold when Season 1 ends and can no longer be used for Season 1 content. Spend them before the seasonal transition if you still have eligible Season 1 activities available.
Do Not Confuse Voidcores With Thalassian Tokens of Merit
Thalassian Tokens of Merit are Great Vault consolation currency. Nebulous Voidcores are the bonus-roll resource. They have different sources and different uses, even though the Great Vault can offer choices connected to both systems.
Do Not Treat a Bonus Roll as a Targeted Purchase
The roll does not allow you to select an exact item, boss drop or stat combination. It is best viewed as an additional chance from the activity’s loot table.
Do Not Assume Every Activity Uses the Same Rules
Raid rolls have a confirmed one-Voidcore cost in Patch 12.1. Other activities may use separate reward prompts or different availability rules. Check the post-activity interface before assuming that a Voidcore can be spent.
Check Your Loot Specialization First
A bonus roll made with the wrong Loot Specialization can produce an item from an unwanted specialization table. Set your specialization before the roll prompt appears.
A Practical Season 2 Bonus-Roll Plan
- Complete your weekly activities and open the Great Vault.
- Compare every direct equipment option with the Nebulous Voidcore choice.
- Take equipment when it is a clear upgrade or fills a high-priority slot.
- Take a Voidcore when the equipment choices are weak and you have a worthwhile raid or activity table available.
- Set your Loot Specialization before spending the resource.
- Use raid rolls selectively, taking advantage of the one-Voidcore cost without assuming a guaranteed drop.
- After Week 8, include Orin Straylight’s weekly Voidcore in your regular reset routine.
- Inspect the original stats and effects before sending a rolled item to the Catalyst.
This is a practical starting order rather than a guaranteed optimal farming route. Final weekly caps, quest requirements and activity eligibility should be confirmed from the live Patch 12.1 interface.
