Need Help Progressing in Path of Exile 2?

A persistent skill can stay disabled in Path of Exile 2 even while the Mana globe is full because Mana is not the resource that keeps it active. Heralds, many defensive buffs, permanent minions, and persistent Meta Skills reserve Spirit. The game also checks the skill's complete reservation, attributes, equipment requirements, and weapon-set assignment before it allows the effect to run.

Open the Skills Panel whenever a persistent skill will not activate. Read the final Spirit value after supports, verify the active weapon set, and confirm that the necessary weapon or shield is equipped. This guide has been reviewed through patch 0.5.4d; later balance changes should be checked in the official Path of Exile 2 0.5.4d patch notes.

Quick answer: Mana pays the costs of ordinary actions, whereas Spirit is set aside for ongoing effects. Recovering Mana cannot free Spirit. If the total reservation fits but the skill remains disabled, the usual cause is an added reservation from a support, an unmet requirement, the wrong weapon set, or an incomplete Meta Skill configuration.

How Spirit Reservation Works in PoE 2

Spirit is a capacity rather than a refillable combat pool. Enabling a 30-Spirit skill locks 30 Spirit until that skill is turned off or becomes invalid. A character with 100 maximum Spirit can maintain two effects that reserve 30 each and will have 40 Spirit available for another reservation. The character's current Mana does not change any part of that calculation.

The base number on a gem is only the starting point. Persistent supports can carry Additional Reservation, and other modifiers can apply a Reservation Multiplier or Spirit Reservation Efficiency. A support that changes Mana Cost does not necessarily change Spirit reservation, so the expanded skill details are more reliable than the short gem description. Grinding Gear Games substantially revised supports and reservation wording in the 0.3.0 Support Gem overhaul, making older build screenshots especially unreliable.

ModifierWhat it changesPlanning consequence
Additional ReservationAdds a stated amount to the reservation of the supported persistent skillCount the support before deciding whether another buff will fit
Spirit Reservation EfficiencyReduces the capacity needed by eligible reservations through an efficiency calculationCheck whether the modifier applies to all skills or only Buffs, Heralds, Minions, Companions, or Meta Skills
Maximum SpiritChanges the total capacity available to the characterRecalculate the complete setup after replacing an item or changing weapon sets
Reservation moved to LifeLets an eligible effect reserve Life instead of SpiritRead every restriction and account for the lost unreserved Life before using it

Increased Reservation Efficiency is not the same as subtracting that percentage from the displayed cost. With 20% increased efficiency, a reservation of 30 becomes 25 because the base value is divided by 1.20. Different modifier types and rounding can alter less convenient values, so use the number shown by the live Skills Panel for the final budget.

Efficiency must also match the skill category. Herald efficiency does nothing for a trigger Meta Skill, and Companion efficiency does not reduce an unrelated defensive buff. Apply reservation investment to the largest important group in the build instead of collecting several narrow modifiers that barely affect the total.

How to Activate Persistent Skills and Find the Failure

Persistent effects are enabled from the Skills Panel rather than cast from the normal skill bar. Locate the icon associated with the persistent gem and activate it there. On controller, use the corresponding panel action instead of looking for the desktop right-click command. If the control remains unavailable, disable one optional reservation and test the desired skill again.

  1. Check maximum, reserved, and unreserved Spirit in the current equipment set.
  2. Expand the skill details and include Additional Reservation from every support.
  3. Verify the gem's level, Strength, Dexterity, and Intelligence requirements.
  4. Confirm any stated weapon condition, such as a Martial Weapon, or an equipment condition such as an equipped Shield.
  5. Inspect the weapon-set selection for both the persistent gem and any skill socketed inside a Meta Skill.
  6. Make sure the active set still contains the Sceptre or other item that supplied the expected Spirit.
  7. For a Meta Skill, confirm that the socketed skill is valid and that the build can generate Energy through the required event.
What the player seesMost likely explanationWhat to inspect
“Not enough Spirit” despite full ManaMana is irrelevant to the reservation or supports raised the final Spirit requirementThe detailed reservation total and currently unreserved Spirit
The buff stopped after a gear upgradeThe replaced item supplied Spirit, attributes, or required equipmentMaximum Spirit and requirements before and after the swap
The effect disappears after weapon swappingThe second set lacks capacity, equipment, or the correct skill assignmentBoth weapon-set checkboxes and the Spirit provided by each set
A Herald is active but never produces its effectThe main skill is not satisfying the Herald's combat conditionThe full Herald wording and the damage events created by the main skill
A trigger reserves Spirit but casts nothingThe Meta Skill is not gaining enough Energy or contains an ineligible skillEnergy generation, socket order, eligibility, and support restrictions
Permanent minions vanish after changing itemsThe new setup cannot pay the army's full reservationThe cost of every minion type and its reservation-adding supports

Weapon sets are checked separately. A Sceptre in the first set can make a reservation legal, while swapping to a staff in the second set removes that Spirit source. The game must also see the persistent skill as enabled for the set being used. Returning to the original weapons will not solve a missing set assignment.

Do not confuse an Uncut Spirit Gem with maximum Spirit. The uncut gem lets you engrave a persistent skill; consuming a permanent campaign reward or equipping an appropriate item changes the size of the Spirit pool. If several requirements are failing at once and the entire character setup needs rebuilding, a PoE 2 Starter Build can provide a coherent combination of skills, supports, equipment, and reservation priorities.

If the displayed capacity, reservation, attributes, equipment, and weapon-set assignments are all valid but the skill still refuses to activate, stop changing the build and test for a state problem. Remove and restore the affected assignment, change zones once, and restart the client. A persistent failure that contradicts the visible requirements should be documented with screenshots and reported as a bug rather than “fixed” by buying unnecessary Mana or Spirit upgrades.

How to Get More Spirit in the Current Campaign

Characters in patch 0.5.4d can obtain 100 permanent Spirit from three campaign encounters. Each boss drops a consumable reward that increases maximum Spirit. Pick the reward up and use it; defeating the encounter alone does not apply the character bonus.

Campaign stageEncounterPermanent reward
Act 1 — FreythornThe King in the Mists+30 maximum Spirit
Act 3 — Azak BogIgnagduk, the Bog Witch+30 maximum Spirit
Interlude 2 — Kriar VillageLythara, the Wayward Spear+40 maximum Spirit

An endgame character with less than 100 permanent campaign Spirit has normally missed a boss, left its reward on the ground, or kept the consumable without using it. Act 4 does not add another Spirit reward in the present campaign route; the final 40 comes from Doryani's Contingency in Interlude 2.

Further capacity must come from the character setup. Sceptres are a common equipment source, while particular affixes, unique items, and Augments can grant maximum Spirit or improve reservation efficiency. These upgrades are not free: a Spirit-focused item may replace damage, defences, resistances, or attributes. Compare the complete item rather than treating every increase to Spirit as an automatic upgrade.

Some passives and Ascendancy mechanics improve only a defined reservation family, and individual granted skills can be exceptions to the general rules. For example, patch 0.5.3 removed the Spirit cost from the His Grave Command Skill granted by The Unborn Lich; an older guide may still treat it as a percentage-based reservation. Check recent changes in the official 0.5.3 patch notes before copying a specialised reservation total.

How to Allocate Spirit for Buffs, Minions, and Meta Skills

Build the reservation plan around jobs that must be performed. Start with the effect that makes the build function, reserve the most valuable defensive layer next, and use the remaining capacity for damage or utility. Filling every last point is not a goal by itself, and several weak effects can be less useful than one reservation that directly supports the main skill.

PriorityTypical reservationDecision rule
Build engineRequired Herald, Companion, permanent minion, or trigger setupReserve first because removing it changes the way the character plays
Primary defenceA persistent effect covering the build's main defensive weaknessKeep unless another layer replaces the same protection
Reliable damageAn effect that consistently improves the main skill in the target contentCompare the actual benefit with its complete supported reservation
UtilityAccuracy, regeneration, ailment handling, or situational mobilityAdd only when the character needs the statistic in real encounters
Luxury optionA second trigger package, extra minion type, or narrow mapping convenienceUse after the core setup remains valid through equipment and weapon swaps

Attack builds should choose Heralds according to the damage events they can create consistently, not according to tooltip appeal. A defensive persistent skill is worth its Spirit when it fixes an observable weakness. Utility supports belong last because adding regeneration or accuracy that the character does not need only makes the core reservation more expensive.

Minion builds should price the whole army before acquiring gear. Decide which minion clears packs, which handles bosses, and which supplies utility, then include every support with Additional Reservation. Adding another minion type is inefficient when it duplicates an existing job or forces the removal of a stronger defensive effect.

For trigger builds, the Meta Skill, its Energy condition, the socketed spell, and all supports form one package. Spirit activates the persistent engine but does not guarantee that the engine will reach its trigger threshold. If the planned configuration is correct and the required trigger gem itself is the remaining obstacle, the PoE 2 Meta Gems service applies to that specific gap.

A small unused margin can make campaign gear changes easier, but unreserved Spirit provides no automatic damage or defence. In a settled endgame setup, calculate a deliberate total and stop investing when the next efficiency node or Spirit item costs more than the reservation it enables is worth.

Final Spirit Checklist

When a persistent skill stops working, do not rebuild the passive tree immediately. Open the Skills Panel in the failing weapon set, compare maximum Spirit with the complete supported reservation, verify attributes and equipment, and then inspect the skill's combat condition. Meta Skills require a second check because being active and successfully triggering are separate states.

  • Collect and consume all three campaign Spirit rewards.
  • Use the final reservation shown in the Skills Panel, not only the base gem value.
  • Check both weapon sets after changing a Sceptre, shield, or required weapon type.
  • Remove optional reservation supports before removing a core buff.
  • Apply efficiency to the category that consumes most of the build's Spirit.
  • Verify Energy generation and skill eligibility inside every persistent Meta Skill.
  • Remember that Uncut Spirit Gems unlock skills but do not increase maximum Spirit.
  • Recheck official patch notes before copying reservation numbers from an older build.

The reliable order is to secure the full campaign total, reserve the build engine, add the primary defence, and spend what remains on proven damage or utility. Mana recovery will never repair a Spirit shortage. Accurate totals, valid weapon sets, and a purpose for every reservation will.
