Path of Exile 3.29 changes equipment sockets from a build restriction into an optional source of gem power when Curse of the Allflame launches on July 24, 2026. Every equipment socket accepts every gem, so a red skill gem can be placed in a white, green, or blue socket without blocking the setup. Socket color still has value, but it now works as a bonus: a gem in a red, green, or blue socket gains +10% Quality when the two colors match.

The number of sockets and their links still define how many gems can form a setup, so a correct link layout remains essential even when every socket is white.
The official Content Update 3.29.0 patch notes separate socket generation into two routes. Sockets generated on an item have a small chance to be red, green, or blue, with a higher chance on higher item-level equipment. Sockets added later by a Jeweller's Orb, Tainted Jeweller's Orb, Orb of Binding, or the Crafting Bench are always white. This distinction makes naturally colored sockets on a suitable high-item-level base more valuable than they were before.

The practical effect during the campaign is that a defense or resistance upgrade no longer becomes unusable because its socket colors conflict with the current skill setup. In maps, color optimization becomes a separate layer after the item already has the required base type, modifiers, socket count, and links. A fully white six-link is functional; matching colors improve the gems placed in it.
White vs Colored Sockets and Gem Quality

A white socket is universal but does not provide the new matching-color bonus. A red socket gives +10% Quality to a red gem, a green socket gives it to a green gem, and a blue socket gives it to a blue gem. A color mismatch is allowed but grants no bonus. The rule applies to the individual gem occupying that socket, so each active or support gem in a linked group checks its own socket separately.

The bonus adds Quality to the socketed gem; it does not add Quality to the equipment item. For example, a 20% Quality red gem in a red socket receives the socket bonus while equipped, whereas the same gem in a white or blue socket does not. The resulting benefit depends on that gem's Quality stat. One gem may gain damage, another may gain speed, area, duration, utility, or a different effect defined on its tooltip. Gem Quality should therefore be evaluated per gem instead of being treated as a fixed damage multiplier.
Item Quality is a different input. It affects the chance to roll non-white sockets when a Chromatic Orb or Tainted Chromatic Orb is used. It does not increase the +10% matching-color bonus. GGG has not published exact non-white probabilities or item-level breakpoints in the 3.29 notes, so precise color odds should not be stated without in-game data. Chromatic Orb 3.29 Changes and Socket Crafting
Chromatic Orbs remain the main currency for rerolling socket colors, but their purpose and economy change. A Chromatic Orb now forces at least one socket on the item to be non-white while the remaining sockets roll normally. Tainted Chromatic Orbs use the same guarantee on corrupted equipment. Higher item Quality raises the chance for additional non-white sockets, but neither currency guarantees an exact color by itself.
Chromatic Orbs are rarer in 3.29, town vendors no longer sell them for Jeweller's Orbs, and their Gold fee on the Currency Exchange is higher. The old Crafting Bench recipes that directly targeted red, green, or blue sockets are removed. Three replacement recipes guarantee a minimum number of non-white sockets, leaving the resulting colors subject to the normal weighting. Corruption now moves in the same direction. The Vaal Orb outcome that previously created a white socket instead turns one random white socket non-white. The Locus of Corruption outcome that previously made every socket white instead changes all white sockets on the item to non-white. Omen of Blanching is renamed Omen of Trichromatism and guarantees at least one red, one green, and one blue socket when a Chromatic Orb is used.
Several older acquisition routes also change. The Harvest craft that turned a random socket white is removed, and the Bestiary recipe that created eight Chromatic Orbs now creates a Rare Four-Linked Helmet. Vorici's Fortification reward at Rank 2 rerolls colors 25 times and keeps the result with the greatest number of non-white socket colors. These changes make white sockets common and colored sockets the result worth pursuing.
Best Bases for Colored Socket Quality

There is no single best base for every build. The base must first satisfy the build's defense type, implicit modifier, attribute requirements, and item modifier needs. When two bases are otherwise suitable, the better socket base is the one whose attribute requirements align with the colors of the most important gems. The selected natural color remains proportional to the item's attribute requirements, preserving the familiar tendency of Strength equipment toward red, Dexterity equipment toward green, and Intelligence equipment toward blue.

Item level is the second filter because higher item levels have a greater chance to generate colored sockets. For a long-term body armor, weapon, or shield, a high-item-level base with the correct attribute profile offers the best natural starting point. Socket count also matters: sockets added through currency or the bench are white, so a dropped item that already generated the needed number of sockets has more opportunities to arrive with useful colors than a low-socket item completed later with Jeweller's Orbs.
For Chromatic Orb crafting, raise the item's Quality before spending large amounts of currency. Quality improves the chance of non-white results, while the base's attribute requirements influence which red, green, or blue colors appear. The new bench crafts are most useful when the build wants several matching bonuses but does not require exact colors in every position. Omen of Trichromatism is the direct option for a setup that needs at least one socket of each primary color.
League-start priorities should remain conservative. Secure the correct base, modifiers, socket count, and links before paying for color optimization. A white socket never prevents the build from functioning, so an early upgrade can be equipped immediately. Once a durable item is ready, target colored sockets for gems whose Quality effects provide the strongest benefit. The rework was designed to reduce early equipment friction, a goal also described in PC Gamer's report on GGG's reasoning, while retaining a more expensive optimization layer for finished gear.
Special Unique Item Socket Rules in PoE 3.29
Several socket-based Unique items receive explicit 3.29 rules, so their behavior should not be inferred from normal equipment. New versions of Dialla's Malefaction, Skin of the Lords, and Skin of the Loyal have a hidden property preventing white sockets. Existing copies are not affected by that hidden-property change. Dialla's Malefaction also makes socketed gems receive the socket-color Quality bonus regardless of gem color, and its special green-socket modifier now grants +20% Quality instead of +30%.
Triad Grip no longer bases minion conversion on socket colors. It now converts 25% of minion Physical Damage to Fire per socketed red gem, to Cold per socketed green gem, and to Lightning per socketed blue gem. Each empty socket converts 25% to Chaos. Existing Triad Grip items keep their previous modifiers, so legacy copies and newly generated versions must be read separately.
Other color-dependent Uniques were adjusted rather than standardized. The Pariah receives variable Life, Mana, or Energy Shield values per red, green, or blue socket. Prismatic Eclipse keeps effects tied to individual socket colors, including Melee Strike Range per white socket. Scaeva receives a revised set of red, green, blue, and empty-socket bonuses. These items remain exceptions where socket color or emptiness affects the item itself in addition to the new gem Quality rule.

PoE 3.29 removes color as a permission check without making color irrelevant. Chromatic Orbs are no longer routine color-fixing currency. Their reduced availability and new non-white guarantees make them an investment in Gem Quality. The best return comes from matching sockets to gems with valuable Quality effects on equipment that will remain in the build long enough to justify the currency cost.
