VALORANT uses two connected but different rating systems: Rank Rating (RR), which you can see, and Matchmaking Rating (MMR), which is hidden. RR moves you through your visible rank, while MMR is Riot's internal estimate of your skill and helps determine both matchmaking and how aggressively your visible rank should move.
The most important rule is simple: if your hidden MMR is higher than your visible rank, you will usually gain more RR for wins and lose less RR for defeats. If your MMR is lower than your rank, you normally gain less and lose more. Riot calls this adjustment rank convergence.
| System | Visible? | Main purpose | Typical range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rank | Yes | Your visible Competitive tier | Iron to Radiant |
| RR | Yes | Tracks progress through your visible rank | 0–100 from Iron to Ascendant; works differently in Immortal/Radiant |
| MMR | No | Hidden skill estimate used for matchmaking and rank convergence | Not published by Riot |
| Performance Score | Yes | Measures match impact from 0–500 | 0–500 |
| Map Rating | Yes | Measures proficiency on individual maps | 0–500 |
What Is RR in Valorant?
RR stands for Rank Rating. It is the visible number that shows your progress through Competitive ranks.
From Iron through Ascendant, reaching 100 RR promotes you into the next rank tier. Riot normally starts promoted players with at least a small RR buffer rather than placing them directly at zero.
RR is not a direct measurement of your hidden skill. It is the visible progression layer that Riot moves toward your underlying MMR over time.
What Is MMR in Valorant?
MMR stands for Matchmaking Rating. It is Riot's hidden skill rating.
Riot describes Competitive MMR as a large ladder containing all players. Unlike visible ranks, the actual numerical MMR value is not shown in the VALORANT client.
MMR helps the system answer questions such as:
- Which players should be placed in the same match?
- Is your visible rank currently below your estimated skill?
- Is your visible rank currently above your estimated skill?
- Should the system move your visible rank upward or downward faster?
The exact mathematical formula used to calculate MMR is not public.
MMR vs RR: What Is the Difference?
| MMR | RR |
|---|---|
| Hidden | Visible after Competitive games |
| Represents Riot's internal estimate of your skill | Represents visible Ranked progress |
| Used heavily for matchmaking | Used to move between visible rank tiers |
| No public numerical value | Visible numerical value |
| Can differ from your visible rank | Gradually converges toward MMR |
The simplest way to understand it is this:
MMR is where the system thinks you belong. RR is how your visible rank is moving toward that estimate.

View All Valorant ServicesHow Is RR Calculated in Valorant?
Riot currently lists four main factors that determine how much RR you gain or lose.
| Factor | Impact | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Match outcome | Highest | Winning gives base RR; losing removes base RR |
| Round differential | High | Dominant wins or losses move RR more than close games |
| Individual performance | Smaller | Exceptional performance can slightly increase gains or reduce losses at lower ranks |
| Rank convergence | Variable | Adjusts final RR based on the difference between hidden MMR and visible rank |
1. Match Outcome Has the Biggest Effect
Winning is the most important factor.
Riot explicitly recommends focusing on securing the match rather than trying to protect K/D/A.
A strong scoreboard can improve an RR result slightly at applicable ranks, but it does not replace the value of winning.
2. Round Differential Matters
A 13–2 win is more decisive than a 13–11 win.
Riot therefore allows round differential to influence RR movement.
In general:
- a dominant win can award more RR than a narrow win;
- a heavy defeat can cost more RR than a close defeat.
This rewards teams for closing games effectively instead of treating every victory as identical.
3. Individual Performance Can Affect RR
From Iron through Ascendant, exceptional individual performance can slightly increase RR gains or cushion RR losses.
Riot specifically notes that individual performance is not limited to kills. Factors such as total damage and assists can matter as part of this evaluation.
However, this factor is intentionally smaller than match outcome.
You should therefore not play for scoreboard statistics at the expense of the round.
4. Rank Convergence Explains Most Strange RR Gains
Rank convergence compares your hidden MMR with your visible rank.
| Situation | Typical RR behavior | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| MMR higher than rank | More RR for wins, less lost for defeats | The system believes you belong higher |
| MMR close to rank | Similar gains and losses | Your visible rank is close to your estimated skill |
| MMR lower than rank | Less RR for wins, more lost for defeats | The system believes your visible rank is ahead of your current MMR |
Why Do I Gain 15 RR but Lose 20?
If this pattern happens consistently across multiple matches, the most likely explanation is that your visible rank is currently higher than your hidden MMR.
The system uses negative convergence:
- wins receive smaller RR gains;
- losses receive larger RR deductions;
- the visible rank is gradually pulled toward the hidden skill estimate.
One single +15 or -20 does not prove that your MMR is bad. Round differential, opponent strength and individual performance can create match-to-match variation.
Look at the pattern over multiple Competitive games.
Why Do I Gain 25 RR but Lose Only 15?
This usually indicates the opposite situation: your hidden MMR is higher than your visible rank.
The system is trying to move your visible rank upward faster.
This can happen after:
- consistent winning;
- strong performance against your current opponents;
- a visible rank reset or recalibration that temporarily places your rank below your MMR;
- a strong improvement period where hidden skill has moved faster than the visible badge.
Why Do Two Players Get Different RR in the Same Match?
Two teammates can finish the same game with different RR because the system evaluates each player's relationship between rank and MMR individually.
For example:
- Player A may have MMR well above Gold 2 and receive +24 RR.
- Player B may have MMR close to Gold 2 and receive +18 RR.
- Player C may have MMR below Gold 2 and receive +14 RR.
The team won the same match, but their convergence factors are different.
Individual performance can also slightly modify the result below Immortal.
Can You See Your Exact Valorant MMR?
No. Riot does not display your exact hidden MMR.
Third-party websites can analyze public match history, visible rank and RR trends, but they cannot directly read Riot's internal MMR value.
Any website claiming to show your exact hidden Riot MMR should therefore be treated as an estimate unless Riot changes its API or publicly exposes the rating.
How Can You Estimate Whether Your MMR Is High or Low?
The best practical signal is your RR trend across multiple matches.
| Pattern | Likely relationship |
|---|---|
| Consistently +23 / -15 | MMR probably above visible rank |
| Consistently +18 / -18 | MMR probably close to visible rank |
| Consistently +14 / -22 | MMR probably below visible rank |
These examples are illustrative, not official thresholds. Riot does not publish a specific RR difference that defines high or low MMR.
Can Your MMR Increase Even If You Lose?
Yes.
Riot explicitly states that you cannot gain RR from a defeat, but your hidden MMR can still increase if your individual performance is exceptional.
This is another reason RR and MMR should not be treated as the same system.
You might:
- lose visible RR;
- still perform above the level expected by the matchmaking system;
- slightly improve your hidden skill estimate.
However, consistently losing matches is not an efficient strategy for increasing MMR because match outcome remains extremely important.
Does KDA Affect MMR and RR?
KDA can be part of performance evaluation, but Riot does not publish a simple formula such as “every five kills equals one extra RR.”
Riot's RR documentation specifically mentions broader performance such as damage and assists, not just kills.
The correct conclusion is:
Strong individual performance can help, but winning rounds matters more than farming KDA.
Does Performance Score Affect RR?
No.
This is one of the most important distinctions after Riot introduced Performance Score.
Performance Score is a separate 0–500 metric that measures areas such as:
- damage;
- adjusted kills and deaths;
- trades;
- assists;
- utility;
- Spike plants and defuses.
Riot explicitly states that Performance Score does not affect RR gains or losses.
This does not contradict the individual-performance factor in the RR system. Riot uses an internal performance evaluation for RR, while the visible Performance Score is a separate metric.
Does Map Rating Affect MMR or RR?
No.
Map Rating is another separate system. It measures your proficiency on individual maps but does not change RR or hidden MMR.
Our Valorant Map Rating guide explains that system separately.
What Changed With MMR in 2026?
Riot made two important Competitive adjustments during 2026.
Patch 12.00 — Hidden MMR Update
Riot updated how hidden MMR is calculated to improve match quality and create more consistent matches.
The stated goal was to better reflect individual skill while improving the chance that players actually belong in the lobbies where they are placed.
Patch 13.00 — RR Calculation Update
Later in the year, Riot adjusted RR calculations again.
The goal was specifically to make players feel less stuck when they are consistently winning matches.
This means older guides describing VALORANT's Ranked system from 2024 or 2025 may no longer accurately represent current RR behavior.
What Is a Double Promotion?
If your hidden MMR is significantly higher than your visible rank, Riot can accelerate convergence with a double promotion.
For example, instead of moving from Gold 1 to Gold 2, you may move directly from Gold 1 to Gold 3.
This is not random. It is the system attempting to move a clearly under-ranked player closer to their hidden MMR.
How Does RR Work in Immortal and Radiant?
Once you reach Immortal, RR works differently.
Instead of reaching 100 RR and automatically moving through every tier, players must meet regional RR thresholds for Immortal 2, Immortal 3 and Radiant.
Riot's dedicated Immortal and Radiant documentation states that individual performance bonuses no longer apply at these ranks. Winning, losing and round differential determine RR movement.
Radiant also requires being within the top 500 players of the region while meeting the required regional RR threshold.
Do 5-Stacks Get Less RR?
They can.
Riot allows full five-player parties to bypass normal rank disparity restrictions, but applies RR reductions depending on the rank differences inside the party.
The reduction can range from 0% up to 90% in extreme rank-disparity situations.
This prevents widely mismatched five-stacks from using the system to generate normal Ranked progression.
Does Queue Dodging Affect RR?
Yes.
Repeated Competitive queue dodging and prolonged AFK behavior can result in RR penalties in addition to other queue restrictions.
Dodging is therefore not a reliable method for protecting MMR or avoiding unfavorable matches.
What Are Rank Shields?
Rank Shields protect players from immediate demotion when entering the first tier of a rank, such as Gold 1 or Diamond 1.
They can prevent a loss at 0 RR from immediately dropping you into the previous rank.
However, a shield protects visible RR and rank status. It should not be interpreted as a free MMR reset.
What Is an RR Refund?
VALORANT can restore RR lost in a match when Riot later confirms that an eligible enemy player was cheating.
The system has specific conditions, and a refund is not automatically issued every time someone is reported.
RR Refunds protect visible progression from matches Riot determines were compromised by cheating.
How Do You Improve Hidden MMR?
Riot gives a straightforward answer: outperform your opponents and win more consistently.
There is no button, MMR reset trick or public formula you can exploit.
In practical terms:
- win more games than you lose over time;
- perform strongly relative to your opponents;
- avoid AFK and dodge penalties;
- do not chase meaningless KDA at the expense of rounds;
- maintain good results over multiple sessions rather than one short streak.

Valorant MMR and RR FAQ
What does MMR mean in Valorant?
MMR means Matchmaking Rating. It is Riot's hidden estimate of your skill and is used for matchmaking and rank convergence.
What does RR mean in Valorant?
RR means Rank Rating. It is the visible number used to track progress through your Competitive rank.
Why do I lose more RR than I gain?
Your visible rank is probably above your hidden MMR, causing negative rank convergence. Look for the pattern across multiple matches rather than one result.
Why do I gain more RR than I lose?
Your hidden MMR is probably above your visible rank, so the system is trying to move your rank upward faster.
Can I see my exact MMR?
No. Riot does not expose the exact numerical MMR value.
Does Performance Score affect RR?
No. Riot explicitly states that the visible Performance Score does not affect RR gains or losses.
Can MMR increase after a loss?
Yes. Riot says exceptional performance can increase MMR during a loss, even though you cannot gain visible RR from that defeat.
Can I get a double rank-up?
Yes. If your MMR is significantly higher than your visible rank, the convergence system can skip a division when you are promoted.
Final MMR vs RR Explanation
If you remember only one thing, remember this:
Your visible rank is not the same thing as your hidden skill rating.
RR shows how far you have moved through the visible ladder. MMR is Riot's internal estimate of where you belong. Rank convergence continually tries to bring those two values closer together.
If you consistently gain more than you lose, the system likely wants to move you upward. If you consistently lose more than you gain, your visible rank is probably ahead of your current MMR. The long-term solution in both cases is the same: produce stronger results and win consistently.
