Theostones are AION 2 weapon engravings that add a chance-based effect whenever you attack. The Global client currently contains 51 Theostones: 17 different effects at Rare, Epic and Unique grade.
The effects range from elemental damage and damage-over-time to PvP control such as Stun, Paralyze, Root, Seal, Blind and movement or Combat Speed reductions.
Quick answer: use a cheap damage Theostone for PvE, save valuable control stones for PvP, combine unwanted Rare and Epic stones to chase higher grades, and avoid putting an expensive Unique stone into a weapon you expect to replace soon.

What Is a Theostone?
Using a Theostone item adds the effect to your available Theostones. You then engrave it through the Enhancement → Theostone system on compatible equipment.
The Global data divides Theostones into three grades:
| Grade | Effects | What Improves |
|---|---|---|
| Rare | 17 | Base damage or control duration |
| Epic | 17 | Higher damage / longer control |
| Unique | 17 | Strongest current version of each effect |
The proc chance normally remains the same across the three grades. What improves is the damage or duration.

How Theostone Damage Works
The elemental damage stones are balanced around different combinations of proc chance and proc size.
A low-chance Fire stone hits hard but rarely. Wind triggers much more often but for less damage.
For single-target PvE, the average value within the same grade is therefore relatively close. The real differences are consistency, attack speed and the internal cooldown.
AoE vs Single-Target Theostone
AoE stones can affect up to four targets. Once you regularly hit two or more enemies, an AoE Theostone becomes much more attractive for farming and dungeon trash.
For pure boss damage, a single-target stone avoids wasting its value on extra targets that are not present.

Do not make Theostones your first major PvE investment. Their damage is flat and is usually a much smaller part of your output than skills, Manastones, Soul Binding and normal equipment progression.
A practical PvE rule:
- multi-target classes: use an AoE elemental stone;
- fast single-target classes: use a low-proc, high-damage single-target stone;
- Spiritmaster: Poison is useful because the class already benefits from maintaining damage-over-time pressure;
- Templar: Combat Speed reduction can add defensive utility;
- healers: a high-proc damage stone gives more reliable value when you attack less frequently.
Best Theostone for PvP
Control is where Theostones become much more interesting.
| Effect | Why It Matters in PvP |
|---|---|
| Paralyze | Can completely stop the opponent for several seconds. |
| Stun | Immediate interruption and kill-window setup. |
| Seal | Strong against classes that rely heavily on active skills. |
| Root | Useful for melee control, kiting and target isolation. |
| Blind | Long-duration disruption against relevant attack setups. |
| Move Speed reduction | Strong for kiting or keeping a target inside pressure. |
Control stones have a longer activation cooldown, but one proc can change an Arena or open-world fight.
Best Theostone by Class
| Class | PvE Direction | PvP Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Gladiator | AoE elemental damage | Stun / Root |
| Templar | Combat Speed reduction or cheap damage | Root / Stun |
| Assassin | Low-chance high-damage single-target | Paralyze |
| Ranger | AoE damage for packs | Move Speed reduction / Stun |
| Sorcerer | AoE elemental damage | Stun / Seal |
| Spiritmaster | Poison | Seal |
| Cleric | High-proc damage stone | Seal / Root |
| Chanter | AoE elemental damage | Stun / Seal |
These are role-based recommendations, not mandatory BiS choices. A Rare control stone can be more useful in PvP than a Unique damage stone.
Important Unique Theostones
Some of the strongest current examples include:
- Tiamat's Rage — 1% chance for a large single-target Fire hit;
- Meslamtaeda's Greed — 3% Stun;
- Ereshkigal's Honor — 2% Paralyze;
- Beritra's Conspiracy — 3% Seal;
- Nezekan's March — Root;
- Lumiel's Interference — Combat Speed reduction;
- Zikel's Arrogance — Poison;
- Yustiel's Compassion — AoE Earth damage.
How to Get Theostones
Current Global-client sources include:
| Source | Reward |
|---|---|
| Level 45 Regional quests | Rare Theostone Chests |
| Abyss Trade Shop | Rare Theostone Selection Chest |
| Season Shop | Rare Theostone Chest |
| Arena Shop | Rare Theostone Chest |
| Daeva Pass | Rare Theostone Chests |
| Black Cloud Merchants | Rotating Rare / Epic stones |
| Market | Tradeable Rare Theostones |
| Combine | Path toward Epic and Unique stones |
The current client does not list normal monster drops or Hidden Cubes as standard Theostone sources.
Abyss Theostone Selection Chest
The Abyss Trade Shop is especially useful if you want a specific PvP control effect instead of gambling on a random chest.
Random Rare chests heavily favor damage stones compared with rare control results.
If your goal is specifically Stun, Paralyze or another control effect, a selection source is much more efficient than repeatedly opening random boxes.
How to Combine Theostones
| Combine | Same Grade | Upgrade |
|---|---|---|
| Rare | 88.9% Rare | 11.1% Epic |
| Epic | 90.9% Epic | 9.1% Unique |
| Unique | 100% Unique | No higher current grade |
Combining does not guarantee the effect you want. The result is selected from the relevant fixed pool.
Unwanted Rare stones are therefore useful as combine material instead of being ignored.
Should You Combine Unique Theostones?
Combining Unique stones cannot upgrade the grade, but it can reroll an unwanted Unique into another Unique result.
Only do this when the current Unique has little use for your build. A weak-looking PvE control stone may still be extremely valuable for a PvP preset.
Do Identical Theostones Stack?
No. When identical Theostones are engraved, only one copy of that effect applies.
If your current equipment setup exposes more than one valid Theostone slot, use different effects rather than duplicating the exact same stone.
Weapon and Guard Slots
Global-client tables place the 51 entries in the weapon Theostone category and show slots on Epic/Unique weapon-category equipment. Live player guides also report compatible guards exposing their own Theostone slot.
Check the Enhancement panel on the exact item before buying a second expensive stone. Equipment categorization and UI labels are safer than assuming every off-hand behaves identically.
Does a Theostone Transfer to New Gear?
Do not assume a valuable Theostone survives normal Gear Transfer.
Current live-player guides report that Theostones can be lost when transferring into a replacement weapon. This is different from upgrading an existing gear line.
Always inspect the transfer preview before sacrificing your old weapon.
For the full transfer rules, see our AION 2 Gear Progression Guide.
Replacing a Theostone
Engraving a new stone over an existing Theostone replaces the current effect.
Because rare control stones and high-grade stones are difficult to replace, confirm the new engraving before overwriting a useful one.
Theostones vs Manastones
| Theostone | Manastone | |
|---|---|---|
| Effect | Chance-based proc | Random passive stat lines |
| Best for | Extra damage or PvP control | Main gear optimization |
| Importance in PvE | Secondary | Much higher |
If your PvE gear is still poorly optimized, spend resources on Manastones before chasing an expensive Theostone.
Common Theostone Mistakes
- Overpaying for a Unique damage stone while core gear is unfinished.
- Using the same Theostone twice and expecting two procs.
- Destroying or transferring a weapon without checking the engraved stone.
- Combining a valuable control stone just because it is only Rare.
- Using a PvE damage stone in Arena when a control proc would be more valuable.
- Chasing one exact Unique effect before completing larger progression upgrades.

Stun, Paralyze, Seal and Root are among the strongest general control effects.
How do you get Unique Theostones?
Combining Epic Theostones is the currently verified upgrade route, with approximately a 9.1% chance for the result to become Unique.
