This PoE 3.29 Frost Blades Trickster is a fast critical-strike attack build designed for mapping, dense league encounters, Atlas progression, and conventional bossing. Frost Blades strikes a nearby enemy and releases cold projectiles behind it, combining melee single-target damage with wide ranged coverage.
The recommended version begins with an inexpensive elemental claw and later develops into a cold-focused critical setup using a stronger rare claw, reliable physical-to-cold conversion, Nightblade, Frenzy Charges, and ailment scaling. Heatshiver and Yoke of Suffering remain valuable options, but neither item compensates for weak hit chance, low weapon damage, or an inability to Freeze durable targets.
Patch status: This guide was checked against the live Path of Exile 3.29 update and official hotfix information on July 26, 2026. Frost Blades, Trickster, and its main attack supports received no direct 3.29 balance change. The build is viable, but Curse of the Allflame has only recently launched, so early results are not sufficient to declare Frost Blades Trickster a confirmed top build across the entire league.
PoE 3.29 Frost Blades Trickster Build Overview
The following table summarizes the recommended character, damage plan, defensive foundation, equipment direction, and realistic content strengths.
| Category | Build Plan |
|---|---|
| Base Class | Shadow |
| Ascendancy | Trickster |
| Main Skill | Frost Blades |
| Weapon | Fast critical-strike claw with strong elemental or physical and cold attack damage |
| Damage Type | Cold-focused attack hits with optional extra Fire Damage and Shock |
| Core Scaling | Attack Speed, Critical Strike Chance, Critical Strike Multiplier, Frenzy Charges, Cold Damage, and Elemental Penetration |
| Defensive Direction | Life and Energy Shield, Evasion, Spell Suppression, recovery, Chill, and Freeze |
| League Start | Functional from the first act with regular weapon upgrades |
| Best Content | Mapping, Legion, Breach, Abyss, Delirium, and general Atlas progression |
| Main Limitation | Boss damage and Heatshiver scaling depend on producing large enough hits to Freeze |
Frost Blades is still a Strike skill even though much of its clear comes from projectiles. The character must connect with the initial strike before the secondary blades are released. This makes strike range, an additional strike target, attack speed, accuracy, and safe positioning important parts of the build rather than optional quality-of-life bonuses.
Frost Blades Trickster Strengths and Weaknesses
Frost Blades Trickster combines rapid movement, screen-wide clear, and strong recovery during mapping, but its boss performance is more sensitive to equipment and ailment thresholds than its pack clear suggests.
Strengths
- Frost Blades can be used from the beginning of the campaign without a mandatory transition skill.
- Secondary projectiles clear enemies beyond the initial strike target.
- Chill and Freeze provide valuable control against ordinary monsters.
- Polymath supplies damage and strong Life, Mana, and Energy Shield recovery after kills.
- Swift Killer supports the Frenzy Charges that scale both damage and Attack Speed.
- Claws provide fast attacks and access to efficient recovery mechanics.
- The build can progress from common rare equipment into a specialized critical-strike setup.
- The new socket rules make temporary campaign links easier to equip.
Weaknesses
- The initial attack is still a melee strike and requires the character to approach dangerous enemies.
- Projectiles do not automatically solve single-target damage against the enemy struck by the melee portion.
- Heatshiver loses much of its offensive purpose if the build cannot Freeze the target.
- Accuracy, Mana cost, Critical Strike Chance, conversion, and ailment effect must all be solved together.
- Several popular unique items compete with rare gear needed for Life, resistances, attributes, and Spell Suppression.
- Elemental Thorns can punish the build's high hit rate in 3.29.
- Old guides may include removed Ancestral Totems or the former offensive version of One Step Ahead.
Players comparing this mapper with safer or less gear-sensitive starters can review the broader PoE 3.29 league starter options before committing currency to the critical-strike transition.

How Frost Blades Damage and Projectiles Work

Frost Blades performs a weapon-based melee strike and releases projectiles from the struck enemy. Both parts benefit from general Attack Damage, Cold Damage, Elemental Damage with Attack Skills, weapon modifiers, and applicable critical modifiers. Melee-specific damage affects the initial hit, while projectile-specific modifiers affect only the secondary blades.
The projectiles travel behind the first target and are primarily a clearing mechanic. They do not normally hit the same enemy damaged by the initial melee strike on their outward path. Boss damage therefore depends mainly on the strike itself, weapon quality, Critical Strike scaling, penetration, ailments, and temporary combat buffs rather than the number of projectiles displayed on screen.
Frost Blades converts part of its Physical Damage to Cold Damage. A physical-claw version should complete the conversion through the passive tree or equipment so its physical investment consistently benefits Cold Damage, Freeze, penetration, and other elemental scaling. A campaign claw with large flat elemental modifiers can work before this conversion package is complete because much of its damage does not begin as Physical Damage.
Freeze is calculated from the size of a Cold Damage hit relative to the target's ailment threshold. Fast attacks with individually weak hits can clear ordinary monsters but fail to Freeze a Pinnacle Boss. Critical damage, weapon damage, ailment effect, reduced enemy resistance, and effects that improve Freeze reliability are therefore connected offensive requirements.
Heatshiver adds Fire Damage based on Cold Damage against chilled or frozen enemies. Yoke of Suffering allows Elemental Damage to Shock and rewards applying multiple ailments. These items form a strong package only when the character can create meaningful Chill, Freeze, and Shock effects. Do not configure a boss as frozen in Path of Building unless the live character can actually Freeze that type of target.
PoE 3.29 Changes Affecting Frost Blades
Frost Blades has no direct entry in the 3.29 skill changes, and Trickster, Nightblade, Multistrike, and the other core supports in this guide were not directly reduced. The complete system changes can be checked in the official Path of Exile 3.29 patch notes.
The socket rework allows any gem to enter any equipment socket. Red, green, and blue sockets now grant additional Quality when their color matches the socketed gem, while sockets are white by default. This means an incorrectly colored campaign item no longer prevents the build from using its links. Matching green sockets for Frost Blades, Nightblade, and other Dexterity gems becomes a later Quality optimization.
The new Bitter Frost Keystone causes enemies chilled by hits or standing in chilling areas to take increased Cold Damage based on Chill Effect, but it also prevents the character from dealing non-Cold Damage. It is not an automatic upgrade for the standard Heatshiver setup because it removes the extra Fire Damage portion and prevents a conventional multi-element Trinity plan. Its passive-tree location and full opportunity cost should be tested as a separate pure-Cold version.
One Step Ahead was not changed again in 3.29, but old Frost Blades guides may still describe its outdated offensive effect. It now sets the player's minimum Action Speed to 90% of base and limits nearby enemy Action Speed to 90%. The node remains useful against slowing effects and fast nearby enemies, but it no longer provides the old 108% base Action Speed.
Percentage-based Physical and Elemental Reflect map modifiers have been replaced by Thorns on rare monsters. Elemental Thorns deals fixed reflected damage after activation and can be mitigated through defenses such as Evasion, Block, Armour, and resistances. A rapid elemental attacker should treat this as a real map danger instead of assuming that old reflect advice still applies.
Frost Blades Gem Links, Auras, and Rotation
The final six-link depends on the weapon, Critical Strike Chance, and whether the character can sustain more than one damage element. The default endgame recommendation is a cold-focused setup rather than an unconditional Trinity link.
| Setup | Recommended Gems | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Main Six-Link | Frost Blades – Elemental Damage with Attacks – Multistrike – Nightblade – Hypothermia – Increased Critical Damage | Cold-focused clearing and single-target damage |
| Critical Alternative | Increased Critical Strikes | Replaces a damage support until Critical Strike Chance is reliable |
| Resistance Alternative | Cold Penetration | Useful when resistant bosses are a larger problem than mapping damage |
| Elemental Leveling | Frost Blades – Trinity – Added Cold Damage – Elemental Damage with Attacks | Campaign setup when Cold and Lightning or Fire can alternate the highest hit |
| Mark | Assassin's Mark – Mark on Hit | Improves critical performance against rare and unique enemies |
| Movement | Whirling Blades – Faster Attacks and Frostblink | Fast ground movement and terrain crossing |
| Guard Skill | Steelskin or Immortal Call | Temporary protection selected around the character's attributes and charges |
| Utility | Blood Rage, Precision, and Frost Bomb | Frenzy generation, Accuracy, and additional boss utility |
Trinity is powerful only when hits reliably alternate which elemental damage type is highest. Heatshiver alone should not be assumed to maintain Resonance, especially against a boss that is not frozen. Watch the Trinity indicator during live combat or compare the damage ranges in a correctly configured Path of Building before using it in the final six-link.
Hatred is the normal damage aura after acquiring a strong physical or physical-and-cold claw. Grace provides the main Evasion reservation, Herald of Ice improves clear, and Precision solves Accuracy and Critical Strike Chance. The character may not have enough reservation for every aura at full level, so Grace, one primary damage aura, and sufficient Precision should be established before adding luxury reservations.
During mapping, use Whirling Blades to approach at an angle, strike once or twice, and continue moving as the projectiles clear the pack. Against bosses, apply Assassin's Mark, place Frost Bomb when safe, maintain Blood Rage only when its degeneration is manageable, and attack during controlled windows. Frost Blades is fast, but standing still through a dangerous boss sequence remains a positioning error.
Trickster Ascendancy, Passive Tree, Bandits, and Pantheon
The recommended life-and-Evasion route combines Polymath and Swift Killer with the defensive control of One Step Ahead and Heartstopper.
- Polymath: Take this after the Normal Labyrinth for scalable damage from allocated Mastery types and powerful recovery after kills.
- Swift Killer: Take this after the Cruel Labyrinth to expand and maintain the Frenzy Charge package.
- One Step Ahead: Take this after the Merciless Labyrinth for protection against severe Action Speed reductions and control over nearby enemies.
- Heartstopper: Complete the standard route after the Eternal Labyrinth for alternating protection against hits and damage over time.
The current class layout can be checked on the official Path of Exile Ascendancy classes page. A more specialized Evasion and Energy Shield character can replace One Step Ahead and Heartstopper with Escape Artist and Spellbreaker, but that version needs equipment built around Energy Shield and Spell Suppression. Heatshiver provides less synergy with Escape Artist than a strong rare Energy Shield helmet.
The passive tree should first secure Life, Accuracy, claw damage, Attack Speed, Cold or elemental attack scaling, and efficient pathing toward Spell Suppression. Add Critical Strike Chance only when the weapon has a reasonable base critical chance, then invest in Critical Strike Multiplier after the character crits consistently. Frenzy Charges, additional strike range, projectile coverage, Mana efficiency, and ailment effect should be added when the corresponding problem becomes visible.
A physical-claw version should complete Physical-to-Cold conversion. An elemental-claw starter instead prioritizes flat damage, Attack Speed, Accuracy, and penetration until a physical weapon and Hatred package becomes a genuine upgrade. Allocate several useful Mastery types for Polymath, but do not spend multiple passive points on a weak cluster solely to increase the Mastery count.
Bandits: Defeat Alira, Kraityn, and Oak for Eramir's Passive Skill Point. One passive point is generally more flexible than a specialized campaign reward because it can complete conversion, suppression, Accuracy, Life, or a Jewel Socket.
Pantheon: Soul of Lunaris suits routine mapping, while Soul of Solaris is appropriate for isolated bosses. Soul of Ralakesh helps while Bleeding and Corrupted Blood protection are incomplete, and Soul of Abberath is useful when Ignite and burning ground are recurring threats. Pantheon choice should follow the content being farmed rather than remain fixed.
Frost Blades Trickster Leveling Guide

Frost Blades can level from the first act. The most important rule is to replace the weapon frequently because an attack build receives little benefit from gem levels when its equipped weapon has fallen behind the campaign.
Begin with Frost Blades and Added Cold Damage or another available attack support. Use a fast sword, dagger, or claw with useful flat damage, and equip movement-speed boots as soon as possible. During the early acts, Life and elemental resistances are more valuable than forcing a critical-strike setup with a weak weapon.
Trinity becomes a strong campaign support when the character has enough Lightning or Fire Damage for different elements to alternate as the largest part of the hit. Wrath, a flat Lightning Damage weapon modifier, or appropriate crafting can enable this version. If the Trinity indicator does not fill, replace the support instead of carrying a nonfunctional link.
After obtaining Multistrike, test whether its repeated attacks feel safe with the current Attack Speed. Begin using Nightblade after equipping a claw or dagger and reaching dependable Critical Strike Chance. Assassin's Mark becomes more valuable at the same stage; before then, a resistance-reducing curse or simple damage utility may be more consistent.
| Stage | Main Priorities | Progression Check |
|---|---|---|
| Acts 1–2 | Frost Blades, Added Cold Damage, fast weapon, Life, and movement speed | Replace low-damage weapons instead of saving campaign currency |
| Acts 3–4 | Elemental Damage with Attacks, optional Trinity, first damage aura, and Multistrike | Confirm Trinity Resonance and maintain elemental resistances |
| Acts 5–6 | Polymath, Swift Killer, Accuracy, conversion planning, and defensive reservations | Correct resistances after the campaign penalty |
| Acts 7–10 | Claw critical nodes, Nightblade, Assassin's Mark, Life, and Spell Suppression | Maintain reliable hit chance and manageable Mana cost |
| White Maps | Five-link, strong rare claw, capped resistances, Grace, and additional strike target | Do not equip Heatshiver unless Freeze is reliable |
| Yellow and Red Maps | Critical consistency, full conversion, Yoke of Suffering, ailment scaling, and six-link | Test boss Freeze, Thorns, recovery, and Spell Suppression |
Before entering Maps, cap elemental resistances, obtain a functional Life total, improve Chaos Resistance where possible, and verify that Frost Blades can be attacked repeatedly without exhausting Mana. A cheap weapon upgrade is normally more important than an early unique that does not fix damage, Accuracy, or defense.
Frost Blades Gear and Flask Progression
The build should acquire its connected systems in stages. A rare claw, Accuracy, conversion, and defenses come before the complete Heatshiver and Yoke ailment package.
| Slot | Early Priorities | Endgame Direction |
|---|---|---|
| Weapon | Fast claw with flat elemental damage and usable critical chance | High-damage claw with Attack Speed, Critical Strike Chance, and strong physical or cold scaling |
| Shield | Life, resistances, and Evasion | Life, Energy Shield, Spell Suppression, ailment protection, and damage modifiers |
| Helmet | Rare helmet with Life and resistances | Heatshiver after reliable Chill and Freeze, or a defensive rare helmet |
| Body Armour | Links, Life, Evasion, and resistances | High-Evasion hybrid rare with Life, Energy Shield, and Spell Suppression |
| Gloves | Life, Accuracy, attributes, and resistances | Additional strike target, conversion if required, suppression, and Attack Speed |
| Boots | Movement speed, Life, and resistances | Spell Suppression, ailment avoidance, Chaos Resistance, and high movement speed |
| Amulet | Life, attributes, Accuracy, and resistances | Yoke of Suffering or a strong rare critical amulet |
| Rings | Life, resistances, Accuracy, attributes, and Mana cost help | The Taming or rare rings with attack damage, critical modifiers, and defenses |
| Belt | Life, resistances, and Strength | Stygian Vise with strong defenses and a useful Abyss Jewel |
Use the official Path of Exile Trade site to compare claws by their complete damage profile rather than one impressive modifier. A fast elemental claw can outperform a mediocre physical weapon during progression, while the physical claw becomes more valuable only after conversion, Hatred, critical scaling, and penetration are correctly configured.
Heatshiver is conditional equipment. If tough enemies are only chilled and never frozen, the helmet provides far less damage than an optimistic Path of Building configuration suggests. Southbound can improve Freeze reliability in a transitional setup, but its kill restriction becomes dangerous when an enemy cannot be frozen. A rare pair of gloves with an additional strike target is normally smoother for general mapping.
A practical flask set contains a Life Flask, Quicksilver Flask, Diamond Flask, Jade Flask, and a final defensive utility flask such as Quartz. Use non-duplicated suffixes for Evasion, movement, Bleeding control, curse reduction, and ailment protection. Flask bonuses do not replace permanent elemental resistances, reliable recovery, or capped Spell Suppression.
Defenses, Map Modifiers, and Best Content
The finished Trickster layers Evasion, Spell Suppression, Life, a supporting Energy Shield pool, recovery, Chill, Freeze, and mobility. These defenses work together, but none makes the character safe while it continuously attacks through telegraphed boss damage.
Polymath recovery is extremely effective while clearing packs but does not function as dependable recovery during an isolated boss phase without additional enemies. Claw recovery, leech, flasks, Energy Shield behavior, and a guard skill must cover those encounters. Freeze is another valuable defensive layer against normal monsters, but Pinnacle Bosses cannot be treated as permanently disabled without verified ailment performance.
Prioritize capped elemental resistances, a meaningful positive Chaos Resistance value, reliable Spell Suppression, Bleeding and Corrupted Blood protection, and a plan for Freeze, Shock, and Ignite. Accuracy is also defensive because missed attacks do not Freeze enemies, apply reliable ailments, or provide attack-based recovery.
Maps with reduced recovery, no leech, reduced aura effect, high monster elemental resistance, ailment avoidance, or severe Critical Strike resistance can substantially weaken the build. Monsters that cannot be chilled or frozen disable an important defensive and offensive interaction. Cold immunity in Expedition prevents the primary damage plan and must be avoided.
Elemental Thorns deserves special attention because Frost Blades attacks quickly and can hit several enemies through projectiles. Entering a dangerous Thorns map with uncapped resistance or weak recovery can cause repeated reflected hits. Physical Thorns may also matter while conversion remains incomplete. Test the modifier on replaceable content before including it in a high-investment farming strategy.
Frost Blades is strongest in mapping content that rewards coverage and movement, including Legion, Breach, Abyss, and moderate Delirium. It can complete ordinary Pinnacle Bosses with sufficient investment, but boss progression is more demanding because the projectiles do not automatically multiply damage against the initial target. Sanctum is playable due to strike range and Freeze, although it is less forgiving than a build that deals damage without approaching guards.
Upgrade Order and Common Frost Blades Mistakes
The best upgrade is the one that repairs the build's current weakest system. Buying several ailment uniques before obtaining a competitive weapon and reliable Freeze usually produces an impressive-looking but ineffective character.
- Keep upgrading the campaign weapon and maintain elemental resistances.
- Obtain a functional four-link and then a five-link without sacrificing basic defenses.
- Fix Accuracy, Mana cost, and dependable Frenzy Charge generation.
- Acquire a strong rare claw and decide between elemental leveling and physical-to-cold scaling.
- Complete conversion for the physical-claw version.
- Add an additional strike target and enough projectile coverage for smooth mapping.
- Establish Critical Strike consistency before investing heavily in Critical Strike Multiplier.
- Add Heatshiver only after confirming meaningful Chill and Freeze.
- Add Yoke of Suffering and improve the complete ailment package.
- Finish Spell Suppression, Chaos Resistance, ailment protection, jewels, and premium weapon upgrades.
Players who need weapon damage, conversion, ailments, Accuracy, and defenses balanced around one budget can use a custom Path of Exile build. The equipment and passive tree should be evaluated as one system rather than assembled from incompatible Frost Blades versions.
- Copying an old One Step Ahead description: The node no longer supplies the former 108% base Action Speed.
- Assuming projectiles multiply boss damage: The initial strike remains the main source of damage against an isolated target.
- Using Trinity without Resonance: Confirm that different elements can alternate as the highest damage type.
- Equipping Heatshiver without Freeze: Test ailments against durable enemies instead of enabling an unsupported configuration.
- Ignoring Accuracy: Critical Strike Chance and recovery are irrelevant when attacks miss.
- Leaving physical conversion incomplete: The physical-claw version loses consistent Cold Damage scaling and ailment power.
- Using Southbound unconditionally: Its restriction can prevent enemies from dying when Freeze fails.
- Following an Ancestral Totem setup: Old melee guides may include gems that were removed from the game.
- Overloading unique items: Life, attributes, resistances, and Spell Suppression still require enough rare gear.
- Treating Thorns as old reflect: The 3.29 modifier is a new fixed reflected-damage mechanic on rare monsters.
Final Frost Blades Trickster Recommendations
Frost Blades Shadow Trickster remains a viable and enjoyable PoE 3.29 mapper with fast claw attacks, wide projectile coverage, strong Frenzy Charge scaling, and excellent recovery while clearing. It is best treated as a mapping-focused all-rounder rather than an automatically dominant boss build.
Level directly with Frost Blades, upgrade the weapon frequently, and use Trinity only while the elemental damage profile actually generates Resonance. Build the final character around reliable Accuracy, conversion, Critical Strikes, Freeze, Evasion, and Spell Suppression before adding Heatshiver and Yoke of Suffering. With those systems coordinated, the build can progress smoothly through the Atlas and scale into demanding non-Uber content without relying on outdated mechanics.
