PoE 2 Atziri’s Contempt Blood Mage Build: Gear, Bleed Scaling and Bossing

PoE 2 Atziri’s Contempt Blood Mage Build: Gear, Bleed Scaling and Bossing

The Atziri's Contempt Blood Mage is a specialized endgame build in Path of Exile 2 that combines rapid spear hits, explosive damage and powerful Bleeding against bosses. Instead of relying on a conventional physical Bleed weapon, it uses a unique spear with substantial Fire and Lightning damage, then makes those elements contribute to Bleeding through the Blood Mage Ascendancy. Getting that interaction right is the difference between an expensive character that struggles with bosses and one that delivers devastating bursts. This guide covers the build in Early Access 0.5.5e, including the important Shattering Spite adjustment introduced in 0.5.0. You will learn which mechanics actually increase Bleeding damage, how to arrange your skills and gear, what to buy first, and where the build still has weaknesses.

Short answer: Start with Atziri's Contempt, Blood Barbs, a reliable way to inflict Bleeding, and a Curse. Use Spearfield to attach Bloodstone Lances, then detonate them with Shattering Spite. Prioritize defenses and Bleed Magnitude before buying expensive critical-strike upgrades.

How Atziri's Contempt Creates Its Damage

Atziri's Contempt is a unique Pronged Spear requiring level 72, 46 Strength and 115 Dexterity. It grants Shattering Spite, increases Presence area and causes your Spear Skills to attach one Bloodstone Lance on hit, up to 30 per enemy. The weapon also provides a mixture of Physical, Fire and Lightning damage, which is central to the Blood Mage version of the build.

Shattering Spite destroys the Bloodstone Lances attached to enemies within its effective range. Each consumed Lance grants the resulting explosion 20% more damage. Reaching five Lances improves the explosion's area, while detonating at least ten activates its listed Physical Attack Damage Life Leech effect. More Lances generally produce a stronger explosion, but waiting for the full 30 is not always practical when a boss is about to attack or disappear.

The fundamental combat sequence is straightforward: apply a Curse, land repeated spear hits, detonate the Lances, and let the resulting Bleeding deal damage while you reposition. The damage comes from the detonation's powerful hit and the Bleeding it inflicts, not from thirty independent Bleeding stacks.

Important patch change: Since update 0.5.0, Shattering Spite has 50% less Magnitude of Damaging Ailments inflicted. Its former instant Life Leech interaction at 15 Lances was also removed. The older versions of this build cannot be used as a reliable benchmark for current damage or survivability.

How Bleed Scaling Actually Works

Bleeding is Physical Damage over Time. Its base duration is five seconds, and its base Magnitude is calculated from the contributing pre-mitigation damage of the hit that inflicted it. Normally, only Physical damage contributes to that calculation. Blood Mage changes this relationship through Blood Barbs, allowing Elemental damage to contribute as well.

This matters because Shattering Spite converts 40% of its Physical damage to Fire and another 40% to Lightning. Without Blood Barbs, those converted portions would not contribute to the base Bleeding Magnitude. With Blood Barbs, the weapon's added elemental damage and the skill's converted elemental damage become valuable for the Bleed calculation.

Bleeding normally deals damage based on 15% of the contributing pre-mitigation hit damage per second before the relevant Magnitude modifiers. A moving target takes 100% extra Bleeding damage. Aggravated Bleeding treats the target as moving even if it stands still, making it particularly important against stationary bosses.

Which stats matter for Atziri's Contempt Blood Mage?
Stat or mechanicEffect on the buildPriority
Blood BarbsAllows Elemental damage to contribute to Bleeding Magnitude and aggravates Bleeding inflicted on Cursed enemies.Essential
Chance to inflict BleedingDetermines whether the detonation applies Bleeding at all. More damage does not substitute for Bleed chance.Essential
Bleeding MagnitudeDirectly improves the damaging ailment and helps offset Shattering Spite's 50% less Magnitude penalty.Very high
Added damage to AttacksImproves the contributing damage, including eligible Elemental damage once Blood Barbs is allocated.High
Critical Hit ChanceMakes strong critical detonations more consistent and supports investment in critical-related ailment scaling.High after the core setup
Attack SpeedHelps deploy Spearfield and deliver follow-up spear attacks faster, but does not increase the trigger rate of spears already placed.High for comfort
Elemental PenetrationCan improve the elemental hit, but does not directly penetrate resistance for the resulting Physical Bleeding Damage over Time.Secondary for a Bleed-focused setup
Critical Damage BonusCan contribute through the appropriate hit and critical-ailment interactions, but is not an automatic separate multiplier to Bleeding.Conditional

There is another important distinction: damage modifiers are not applied to Bleeding a second time after its base Magnitude has been calculated. A modifier improving a hit and a modifier specifically improving Bleeding Magnitude do not necessarily behave the same way. Evaluate upgrades using the actual Bleeding calculation, not just the displayed hit damage of Shattering Spite.

Only the strongest Bleeding instance normally deals damage at a given moment, although other instances can remain on the enemy. Your goal is to create and maintain a powerful Bleed rather than repeatedly apply weaker ones and expect their damage to stack.

Best Blood Mage Ascendancy Priorities

Blood Mage is not chosen simply for additional damage. Its Ascendancy provides the elemental-to-Bleed interaction, Curse synergy and Life-based mechanics that make Atziri's Contempt viable as a dedicated bossing weapon.

The Core Notables

Sanguimancy introduces the Blood Mage's Life-cost system and Life Remnants, which can restore Life and allow recovery beyond the normal maximum. This creates useful sustain but also means a series of expensive skill casts can become dangerous if you are already injured.

Blood Barbs is the build-defining damage notable. Elemental damage contributes to Bleeding Magnitude, and Bleeding inflicted on Cursed targets is Aggravated. Because Shattering Spite converts most of its Physical damage to elements, this notable should be treated as mandatory before evaluating the build's final damage.

Grasping Wounds helps against sudden hits by delaying part of the Life loss over four seconds. It gives you time to recover, but the delayed damage is not removed; poor recovery can still kill you.

Crimson Power adds maximum Life based on the item Energy Shield value of your equipped Body Armour. This makes a high-Energy-Shield rare chest especially attractive even when your overall setup prioritizes Life rather than a conventional Energy Shield character.

Whispers of the Flesh can strengthen the Curse-focused approach by disrupting enemy Life regeneration and applying its Life reservation effect. Whether to prioritize it over an additional defensive option depends on your available Ascendancy points and current content.

Do not allocate every offensive-looking critical notable automatically. The final choice must account for your gloves, jewels and critical setup, particularly if you plan to use Maligaro's Virtuosity.

Best Skill Gems and Support Links

The build works best when each active skill has a clear job. Shattering Spite delivers the important detonation, Spearfield builds its damage, and your utility skills make the explosion safer and more consistent. The following are practical configurations for 0.5.5 rather than a requirement to purchase every high-tier Support Gem immediately.

Recommended Atziri's Contempt Blood Mage skill setup
SkillRecommended supports or setupPurpose
Shattering SpiteBleed III, Deep Cuts II, Pinpoint Critical; add Concoct II or Rageforged II when their resource requirements are supported.Primary boss burst and strong Bleeding application.
SpearfieldRapid Attacks II, Magnified Area II, Rage III; use additional utility supports according to available sockets.Generates many spear hits and attaches Bloodstone Lances rapidly.
CurseEnfeeble or another suitable Curse, optionally socketed into Blasphemy.Ensures enemies are Cursed before Bleeding is inflicted, activating Blood Barbs' Aggravation.
EntangleUnleash and critical-focused utility supports, used with the secondary weapon set.Rapid spell hits for building Critical Weakness when paired with Effigy of Cruelty.
Herald of BloodArea and explosion-related utility supports as space allows.Improves mapping through explosions when enemies with accumulated Blood Loss are killed.
Life RemnantsRemnant-related support upgrades when available.Supports Life recovery and overflow during combat.

Shattering Spite: Which Supports Come First?

Bleed III is especially valuable because it provides reliable Bleeding application. Lower-tier Bleed supports can help before that upgrade, but their application chance must be considered. Deep Cuts II focuses the setup on stronger Bleeding, making it a natural choice for this specific character rather than a generic hit-damage build.

Pinpoint Critical supports the critical-strike direction once your character has the necessary investment. Concoct II can provide substantial Bleeding Magnitude, but it consumes Life Flask charges. It is not a free damage multiplier: repeated use without a sustainable flask setup can leave you without emergency recovery.

Rageforged II is another situational damage option. It requires Rage to function properly, so you should establish a reliable source of Rage before dedicating an important Support slot to it.

Spearfield and Utility Skills

Spearfield's job is to hit frequently, not necessarily to deliver the largest individual hit. The unique spear adds Bloodstone Lances through Spear Skill hits, making reliable contact from its placed spears and quick deployment especially useful. Once enough Lances are attached, activate Shattering Spite instead of continuing to attack simply because the skill is available.

For ordinary mapping, Herald of Blood helps clear groups after enemies accumulate Blood Loss from Physical Damage over Time. Its explosions should not be mistaken for a dependable source of the initial Bleeding application. For bosses, a dependable Curse and a well-prepared detonation are considerably more important than clearing effects.

Best Gear for Atziri's Contempt Blood Mage

Atziri's Contempt is the only item required for the central Bloodstone Lance interaction. Several other uniques can improve damage or convenience, but filling every slot with expensive uniques too early makes resistances, Life and attributes much harder to manage.

Gear choices and what they contribute
SlotRecommended item or statsReason to use it
WeaponAtziri's ContemptRequired for Bloodstone Lances and Shattering Spite. Compare attack speed, weapon damage and Presence rolls.
Off-handRare defensive or utility option; Sacred Flame as an offensive upgradeSacred Flame grants substantial extra Fire damage and useful Presence-related effects, but it is not required to start.
Body ArmourRare chest with high item Energy Shield, maximum Life and resistancesPairs with Crimson Power to improve maximum Life while filling defensive gaps.
HelmetRare defensive helmet; Alpha's Howl as an alternativeAlpha's Howl supplies substantial Spirit and improves Presence coverage, but may complicate defensive gearing.
GlovesRare Life/resistance gloves; Maligaro's Virtuosity for a critical setupMaligaro's offers critical benefits but fixes Critical Damage Bonus at 250%, changing the value of other critical modifiers.
AmuletRare Life, attributes and useful offensive stats; Fireflower as an optionFireflower grants levels to Fire Skills, including Shattering Spite, but damages you when you Ignite an enemy.
RingsAdded damage to Attacks, maximum Life, resistances and needed attributesStrong rare rings can improve both the offensive foundation and survivability.
BootsMovement Speed, maximum Life and resistancesReliable movement matters during the Spearfield setup and between detonations.
Belt and jewelsLife, defenses, Bleeding Magnitude and relevant critical-ailment bonusesEfficient way to correct weaknesses without replacing the build's defining weapon.

Is Effigy of Cruelty Worth a Weapon Swap?

Effigy of Cruelty is a useful bossing upgrade for the secondary weapon set. Critical Hits with Spells apply one to three stacks of Critical Weakness, depending on the item's roll. Entangle can generate repeated spell hits and help build those stacks before you return to the spear for a major detonation.

Each Critical Weakness stack adds 0.5 percentage points to the Critical Hit Chance of hits against the affected enemy, up to 20 stacks. The maximum benefit is therefore +10 percentage points, but only after reaching the full stack count. It is not an instant +10% bonus from a single hit.

Because Atziri's Contempt starts with 5% base Critical Hit Chance, this setup can make a substantial difference on long boss fights. It is less valuable if an enemy dies before you can build meaningful stacks or if swapping weapons repeatedly exposes you to avoidable damage.

Soul Core of Opiloti in Patch 0.5.5

The official 0.5.5 patch notes changed Soul Core of Opiloti significantly. When socketed in a Martial Weapon, it now grants 40% increased Magnitude of Bleeding you inflict, with a limit of one. Previously, it granted a chance to cause Bleeding on hit.

This makes the Soul Core an attractive offensive upgrade if your weapon has a suitable empty socket. However, it no longer provides Bleeding chance. A character that replaces its only source of Bleed chance with this item can end up with more theoretical Magnitude but unreliable actual Bleeding application. Secure Bleed chance separately before making the upgrade.

How to Keep the Blood Mage Alive

The build's most noticeable weakness is that it asks you to spend time preparing a powerful hit while also managing a Life-based resource system. A character with impressive Bleeding damage can still feel terrible if every boss mechanic interrupts its setup or forces it to retreat before detonating.

Start by capping Elemental resistances, improving Chaos resistance and building a substantial Life pool. A high-item-Energy-Shield body armour becomes especially rewarding when Crimson Power is available. Movement Speed on boots, suitable defensive charms and dependable Life recovery should be secured before buying luxury offensive uniques.

Grasping Wounds can smooth out damage from sudden hits, but it does not grant immunity to burst damage. Life Remnants help restore Life, especially when enemies are dying regularly, while isolated boss encounters may provide fewer convenient recovery opportunities. Always consider the Life spent by your skills and any additional flask costs from Concoct.

Shattering Spite's leech is useful, but it should not be treated as the same instant recovery mechanism found in outdated guides. In dangerous encounters, completing a safe detonation and moving away is better than standing still to force another attack cycle.

What to Buy First: Budget to Endgame

A sensible purchasing order matters because the highest-priced item is not automatically the upgrade that fixes your current problem. The build should become mechanically reliable before you optimize its maximum single-hit damage.

  1. Level with an appropriate temporary setup. Atziri's Contempt requires level 72, so use skills that function without the unique while progressing through the campaign and early endgame. Do not invest heavily into the final critical configuration before you can equip the spear.
  2. Buy a functional Atziri's Contempt. Prioritize obtaining the weapon itself, meeting its attribute requirements and unlocking the Shattering Spite/Spearfield interaction. A reasonably rolled spear is enough to establish the core build.
  3. Make Bleeding reliable. Allocate Blood Barbs, use an explicit source of Bleeding chance and keep enemies Cursed before your detonation. These are larger practical improvements than a luxury item on a character with inconsistent Bleeding.
  4. Fix defenses and movement. Upgrade your rare chest, rings, boots and other flexible slots until you have adequate Life, resistances and movement. If using Crimson Power, pay special attention to the body armour's item Energy Shield.
  5. Upgrade the important supports. Improve the Shattering Spite setup, particularly reliable Bleeding application and Bleeding Magnitude. Add the improved Soul Core of Opiloti when a compatible socket is available.
  6. Improve boss consistency. Add Critical Hit Chance, appropriate jewels and, when affordable, the Entangle plus Effigy of Cruelty secondary weapon set.
  7. Finish with expensive uniques and specialized upgrades. Consider Sacred Flame, Alpha's Howl, Fireflower, a suitable Maligaro's Virtuosity setup and premium weapon variants only after checking the effect on the complete character.

Atziri's Contempt belongs to the Fate of the Vaal unique-item pool associated with Atziri's content. If you want to farm the encounter instead of trading for the weapon, see our PoE 2 Atziri boss guide for Temple access, encounter mechanics and rewards. Farming the boss does not guarantee a specific unique drop, so compare the time investment against the current trade-market price before committing.

Atziri's Contempt Bossing Rotation

Bossing is where this character is designed to excel, but maximum damage depends on completing the correct sequence without losing the opportunity to detonate. The ideal rotation becomes slightly longer once a secondary Critical Weakness setup is available.

  1. Establish the Curse. Make sure the boss is Cursed before the Bleeding-inflicting detonation. This allows Blood Barbs to aggravate the resulting Bleeding.
  2. Prepare Critical Weakness if available. Against a durable target, switch to the Entangle setup and generate useful Critical Weakness stacks with Effigy of Cruelty. Skip this step when the setup would be too dangerous or the enemy will die quickly.
  3. Build Bloodstone Lances. Use Spearfield and other appropriate spear hits to attach Lances. Watch the boss's movement and upcoming mechanics instead of insisting on the maximum stack count every time.
  4. Detonate with Shattering Spite. Return to your primary weapon set, enter the required range and activate the skill while the Curse and relevant debuffs are active.
  5. Move while Bleeding deals damage. Avoid unnecessary hits, recover Life and prepare the next opening. Apply another strong Bleeding instance when the current effect is ending or when your next detonation is meaningfully stronger.

For bosses with short vulnerability windows, consistency is more important than theoretical maximum damage. A clean detonation at a moderate Lance count can outperform a failed attempt to reach 30 Lances. Conversely, bosses with long, safe attack windows reward additional preparation and Critical Weakness stacking.

Mapping Setup vs. Dedicated Bossing Setup

The same character can clear maps and fight bosses, but the two situations reward different investments. Mapping benefits from fast Spearfield application, good area coverage, comfortable movement and Herald of Blood explosions. Most normal enemies should not require a lengthy Critical Weakness setup.

For bossing, prioritize the strongest reliable Shattering Spite Bleed, a consistent Curse, suitable single-target supports and enough defense to complete the rotation. Enlarging Presence can make detonations easier to position, but it does not replace learning the boss's attack windows.

This is not a conventional one-button clearing build. It can become smoother with expensive gear, but its defining strength is concentrated damage against enemies that survive long enough for the spear mechanics to matter.

Common Mistakes That Ruin the Build

Most disappointing Atziri's Contempt characters suffer from a missing mechanic rather than a complete lack of expensive items. Check the following issues before spending more currency.

  • Skipping Blood Barbs: The weapon's large Fire and Lightning components cannot contribute properly to Bleeding Magnitude without the Ascendancy interaction.
  • Forgetting Bleeding chance: High Elemental damage and Bleeding Magnitude do not independently guarantee that Shattering Spite will inflict Bleeding.
  • Detonating before the Curse: Blood Barbs aggravates Bleeding inflicted on Cursed enemies, so the order of actions matters.
  • Using outdated Shattering Spite damage assumptions: The current skill applies 50% less Magnitude of Damaging Ailments.
  • Treating Bloodstone Lances as Bleeding stacks: Thirty attached Lances strengthen the explosion; they do not automatically create thirty separately damaging Bleeds.
  • Assuming Critical Weakness is instantly maximized: The full bonus requires building stacks, which takes time.
  • Buying Maligaro's Virtuosity without recalculating critical scaling: Its fixed 250% Critical Damage Bonus is not an additional multiplier on top of every other bonus.
  • Ignoring Life and flask costs: Blood Mage skills consume Life, and Concoct can drain flask charges during repeated boss rotations.
  • Overvaluing Elemental Penetration for Bleeding: It can improve the elemental hit but does not directly scale the resulting Physical Damage over Time as though Bleeding were Fire or Lightning damage.

PoE 2 Atziri's Contempt Blood Mage FAQ

These answers address the main decisions players face before investing in the character.

Is Atziri's Contempt Blood Mage a good league starter?
No. The weapon requires level 72, and the final build depends on specific Ascendancy, Curse and Bleeding interactions. Level with another functional setup and transition once the required pieces are available.

Does every Bloodstone Lance add another Bleeding stack?
No. The Lances increase Shattering Spite's explosion damage. Bleeding instances do not normally stack their damage, so the goal is one exceptionally powerful active Bleed.

Why does my Shattering Spite hit hard but barely Bleed?
Check Blood Barbs, explicit Bleeding chance, whether the target is Cursed, your Bleeding Magnitude modifiers and whether you are evaluating an outdated pre-0.5.0 setup.

Should I buy Maligaro's Virtuosity or Effigy of Cruelty first?
For long boss fights, Effigy of Cruelty can help solve the spear's low base Critical Hit Chance through stacked Critical Weakness. Maligaro's Virtuosity should be evaluated afterward against your complete critical setup and defensive needs.

Is Soul Core of Opiloti still a source of Bleeding chance?
No. In 0.5.5, its Martial Weapon effect became 40% increased Bleeding Magnitude. You must obtain Bleeding chance elsewhere.

Can this build defeat endgame bosses on a moderate budget?
The central rotation works without every luxury unique, provided you have the spear, correct Bleeding mechanics and enough defense to survive. Expensive critical and elemental upgrades raise its ceiling, but gear alone will not compensate for missed detonations or unsafe positioning.

Conclusion

Atziri's Contempt Blood Mage is strongest when built around a dependable Bleeding detonation rather than a collection of expensive uniques. Blood Barbs makes the spear's Elemental damage relevant to Bleeding, Spearfield supplies the Bloodstone Lances, and a Curse ensures that the resulting Bleed is Aggravated. Secure these interactions first, then invest in defensive gear, Bleeding Magnitude and critical consistency. The build rewards precise boss timing and careful upgrade decisions, but its delayed damage, Life costs and setup requirements mean it will never play like a simple one-button attacker.
