Epic gems become the new socketing standard when Phase 3 opens in TBC Classic Anniversary. They improve the same core stats as familiar rare-quality Outland gems, but each cut provides a stronger value. Because the first supply is tied to Black Temple and the Battle for Mount Hyjal, replacing every rare gem immediately is usually wasteful. The efficient plan is to reserve epic gems for long-term Tier 6 items, finish mandatory hit or defense requirements first, and use hybrid colors only when a socket bonus or meta requirement is worth preserving.
This guide covers all six raw epic gems, every one of the 34 core Phase 3 cuts, Jewelcrafting designs from Indormi, rare design drops from Mount Hyjal bosses, socket rules, and practical priorities for every class and role. Later Sunwell-era designs are separated from the Phase 3 pool so they are not mistaken for launch options.
When epic gems unlock in TBC Anniversary
Epic gems arrive with Black Temple and the Battle for Mount Hyjal on August 27, 2026. Blizzard's official Phase 3 announcement confirms three parts of the system: characters with 375 Mining can obtain epic gems through mining inside Mount Hyjal, epic gems appear as rare drops inside Black Temple, and Jewelcrafting designs are sold by Indormi inside the Mount Hyjal raid.
Epic gems do not replace meta gems, and they are not produced by prospecting ordinary Fel Iron or Adamantite Ore. A raw epic gem is tradeable and can be cut by another player, but the Phase 3 designs themselves are Bind on Pickup and require 375 Jewelcrafting. This makes access to recipes more restrictive than access to the finished cuts.
All six raw epic gem types

|---|---|---|---|
| Crimson Spinel | Red | Red sockets | Strength, Agility, Attack Power, healing, spell damage, Dodge and Parry |

| Lionseye | Yellow | Yellow sockets | Intellect, physical Hit, spell Hit, physical Crit, spell Crit, Defense and Resilience |
| Shadowsong Amethyst | Purple | Red and blue sockets | Offensive red stats combined with Stamina or mana regeneration |
| Pyrestone | Orange | Red and yellow sockets | Offensive red stats combined with Hit, Crit or Intellect |
| Seaspray Emerald | Green | Yellow and blue sockets | Defense, Crit, Intellect or Spell Penetration combined with Stamina or mana regeneration |

Where to get raw epic gems
Phase 3 has two confirmed raid sources. A character needs 375 Mining to gather the special gem-bearing deposits inside Mount Hyjal. Raw gems also appear as rare drops from enemies inside Black Temple. Both routes are raid-dependent, so early supply is controlled by raid access, successful clears, guild distribution rules, and the number of eligible miners.
- Mount Hyjal mining. Bring at least one confirmed 375 Miner and agree who receives the mined gems before the raid starts.
- Black Temple drops. Establish whether raw gems are rolled, assigned through loot council, placed in the guild bank, or sold to fund progression.
- Auction House. Raw and cut gems can circulate outside the original raid, but early prices are likely to reflect limited Tier 6 supply.
- Guild crafting. Centralizing designs on reliable Jewelcrafters prevents expensive gems from sitting unused while the raid searches for a cutter.
A raid that wants to use every Mount Hyjal mining opportunity needs a prepared Miner before the first clear. If the profession is still below the requirement, a structured TBC Mining route to 375 can close the remaining skill gap before Phase 3 rather than leaving raid-only deposits inaccessible.
How gem colors and socket bonuses work
| Gem color | Matches these sockets | Counts toward meta requirements as |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Red | One red gem |
| Blue | Blue | One blue gem |
| Yellow | Yellow | One yellow gem |
| Purple | Red or blue | One red and one blue gem |
| Orange | Red or yellow | One red and one yellow gem |
| Green | Yellow or blue | One yellow and one blue gem |
You may place any non-meta gem into any normal socket, but an unmatched color does not help activate that item's socket bonus. Hybrid gems are valuable because they preserve two colors at once and count as both colors for a meta requirement. They are not automatically better than a pure stat gem. Add the value of the hybrid cut and the socket bonus, then compare that result with using the strongest pure cut in the same slot.
Jewelcrafting requirements and Indormi
Indormi, Keeper of Ancient Gem Lore, stands inside the Mount Hyjal raid entrance and sells 26 core epic gem designs to Jewelcrafters with 375 skill. Her inventory unlocks through The Scale of the Sands reputation: 13 designs at Friendly, nine more at Honored and four more at Revered. Together with eight rare boss-drop designs, this creates the complete 34-cut Phase 3 pool. Friendly provides the important pure-stat cuts, Honored adds most hybrid cuts, and Revered completes the vendor set with several specialized options.
| Reputation | Designs available from Indormi | Best early demand |
|---|---|---|
| Friendly | Bold, Delicate, Teardrop, Runed, Bright and Subtle Crimson Spinel; Solid, Sparkling and Lustrous Empyrean Sapphire; Brilliant, Smooth, Gleaming and Thick Lionseye | Primary throughput, Stamina, healer regeneration, Crit and Defense |
| Honored | Balanced, Infused and Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst; Potent, Luminous and Glinting Pyrestone; Radiant, Dazzling and Jagged Seaspray Emerald | Meta activation, valuable socket bonuses and mixed offensive or survival stats |
| Revered | Rigid Lionseye, Royal Shadowsong Amethyst, Wicked Pyrestone and Enduring Seaspray Emerald | Physical Hit, healer mana regeneration, Attack Power with Crit and tank Defense with Stamina |
Do not buy designs only because they have become available. A guild's first Jewelcrafter should learn the cuts the roster will actually use. Runed, Bold, Delicate, Teardrop and Solid serve broad demand; Rigid, Royal and Enduring become important as reputation rises. A second Jewelcrafter can cover specialized cuts and provide availability when the primary crafter is offline.
Mount Hyjal boss drop designs
Eight additional core designs are rare Bind on Pickup drops from Mount Hyjal bosses rather than reputation purchases from Indormi. Every one requires 375 Jewelcrafting to learn. Their random source means a guild cannot schedule an exact unlock week, and a design can be wasted if it is assigned to a player without the profession requirement.
| Boss drop design | Finished cut | Primary use |
|---|---|---|
| Design Flashing Crimson Spinel | 10 Parry Rating | Specialized avoidance for shield tanks |

Cuts that should not be treated as Phase 3 launch designs
Quick Lionseye, Reckless Pyrestone, Steady Seaspray Emerald and Forceful Seaspray Emerald were added through a later recipe set in the original content sequence. Database pages can display inconsistent phase labels or associate alternative versions of these designs with The Scale of the Sands, but they are not part of the 34-cut core Phase 3 list above. Do not plan a launch-day build around these four cuts unless the Anniversary live version of Indormi actually sells them or Blizzard confirms an accelerated recipe release.
The same restriction applies to Purified Shadowsong Amethyst and other Shattered Sun Offensive designs. Those belong to the later Isle of Quel'Danas and Sunwell progression context, not the starting Black Temple and Mount Hyjal gem route.
Best epic gem priorities by class and role
| Class or role | Primary cuts | Conditional cuts | Decision rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arms and Fury Warrior | Bold Crimson Spinel | Rigid Lionseye, Inscribed Pyrestone and Sovereign Shadowsong Amethyst | Reach the build's Hit requirement, then favor Strength unless current stat weights support another choice |
| Protection Warrior | Solid Empyrean Sapphire | Thick Lionseye, Enduring Seaspray Emerald, Subtle or Flashing Crimson Spinel | Secure crit immunity and effective health before adding avoidance |
| Retribution Paladin | Bold Crimson Spinel | Rigid Lionseye and Inscribed Pyrestone | Correct Hit first, then prioritize Strength and valuable socket bonuses |
| Protection Paladin | Solid Empyrean Sapphire | Thick Lionseye and Enduring Seaspray Emerald | Maintain the required defensive setup, then stack effective health for progression |
| Holy Paladin | Teardrop Crimson Spinel | Luminous Pyrestone, Brilliant Lionseye, Lustrous Empyrean Sapphire and Royal Shadowsong Amethyst | Choose throughput unless encounter length makes Intellect or mana regeneration more valuable |
| Hunter | Delicate Crimson Spinel or Bright Crimson Spinel | Rigid Lionseye, Glinting Pyrestone and Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst | Meet Hit needs, then follow the specialization's Agility versus Attack Power weighting |
| Rogue | Delicate Crimson Spinel | Rigid Lionseye, Glinting Pyrestone and Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst | Do not gem Hit beyond the useful threshold; use purple cuts only for worthwhile bonuses or meta activation |
| Feral Druid DPS | Delicate Crimson Spinel | Glinting Pyrestone and Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst | Balance Agility and Hit around the active cat build and current gear |
| Feral Druid Tank | Solid Empyrean Sapphire | Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst and Delicate Crimson Spinel | Use Stamina for progression survival and Agility hybrids when avoidance and threat justify the trade |
| Balance Druid | Runed Crimson Spinel | Great Lionseye, Veiled Pyrestone, Potent Pyrestone and Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst | Reach the relevant spell Hit requirement before stacking spell damage |
| Restoration Druid | Teardrop Crimson Spinel or Sparkling Empyrean Sapphire | Royal Shadowsong Amethyst and Luminous Pyrestone | Compare direct healing with Spirit scaling and real mana needs for the assigned raid role |
| Mage | Runed Crimson Spinel | Great Lionseye, Veiled Pyrestone and Potent Pyrestone | Account for talents and raid debuffs when calculating Hit, then favor spell damage |
| Warlock | Runed Crimson Spinel | Great Lionseye, Veiled Pyrestone, Potent Pyrestone and Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst | Cap the necessary spell Hit without wasting rating, then use damage or a hybrid needed for the meta |
| Shadow Priest | Runed Crimson Spinel | Great Lionseye, Veiled Pyrestone and Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst | Use spell Hit only to the build's requirement and prioritize reliable damage afterward |
| Holy and Discipline Priest | Teardrop Crimson Spinel or Sparkling Empyrean Sapphire | Royal Shadowsong Amethyst, Luminous Pyrestone and Lustrous Empyrean Sapphire | Spirit-heavy builds value Sparkling, while direct throughput and encounter mana decide the remaining sockets |
| Enhancement Shaman | Delicate Crimson Spinel or Bright Crimson Spinel | Glinting Pyrestone, Rigid Lionseye and Infused Shadowsong Amethyst | Check Hit and current stat weights before choosing between Agility and Attack Power |
| Elemental Shaman | Runed Crimson Spinel | Great Lionseye, Veiled Pyrestone and Potent Pyrestone | Use talents and raid composition to establish the actual spell Hit target first |
| Restoration Shaman | Teardrop Crimson Spinel | Lustrous Empyrean Sapphire, Royal Shadowsong Amethyst, Luminous Pyrestone and Dazzling Seaspray Emerald | Throughput is the default, but long progression fights can increase the value of mana regeneration |
| PvP characters | Solid Empyrean Sapphire and Mystic Lionseye | Glowing, Shifting or Sovereign Shadowsong Amethyst and Stormy Empyrean Sapphire | Balance Resilience and Stamina against offensive pressure; use Spell Penetration only for a deliberate resistance target |
These are priority directions rather than universal Best in Slot answers. Talents, raid buffs, debuffs, encounter duration, current Hit, meta requirements and the exact socket bonus can change the winning cut. Recalculate the whole item instead of comparing two gems in isolation.
How to prioritize expensive epic gems
- Complete mandatory thresholds. Physical Hit, spell Hit and tank Defense have sharply reduced value after the required target is reached.
- Gem long-term items first. Tier 6 pieces, best weapons with sockets and proven phase-long off-pieces justify early epic gems better than temporary catch-up equipment.
- Protect the meta activation. Use the minimum number of purple, orange or green gems needed to maintain the chosen meta effect.
- Evaluate the socket bonus. Match colors when the bonus plus the hybrid stats beat ignoring the bonus for a pure cut.
- Correct survival problems. Tanks may need Stamina or Defense, healers may need mana, and PvP players may need Resilience before throughput becomes useful.
- Upgrade remaining sockets by impact. Put scarce gems into the item with the longest expected lifetime and the most valuable stat conversion.
Replacing a rare gem with its epic equivalent is an incremental upgrade, not a reason to destroy an otherwise correct gear plan. If the item will be replaced soon, keep the rare cut. If a new piece is expected to remain equipped through most of Tier 6, use the epic cut once the role-specific calculation is settled.
Jewelcrafter recipe priority and goldmaking plan
A Jewelcrafter must reach 375 before learning any of these designs. Players who want a raid-ready cutter without buying unnecessary materials can use a planned TBC Jewelcrafting route to 375, then focus on Mount Hyjal access and The Scale of the Sands reputation rather than treating profession skill alone as the finish line.
| Priority | Design group | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First | Runed, Bold, Delicate, Teardrop and Solid | These cover the largest number of raid damage, healing and tank sockets |
| Second | Rigid, Great, Veiled, Thick and Enduring | Threshold stats create urgent demand when new Tier 6 pieces change a character's totals |
| Third | Royal, Luminous, Glinting, Potent, Shifting and Sovereign | Hybrid cuts solve meta and socket-bonus requirements |
| Specialized | Mystic, Stormy, Flashing, Radiant and Infused | Demand depends on PvP, tank preferences or a narrower class setup |
- Advertise only designs actually learned by the character.
- Confirm whether the customer provides the raw gem before quoting a cutting fee.
- Keep separate prices for a supplied raw gem and a finished cut from your own stock.
- Do not hold the entire stock in a slow specialty cut while Runed, Bold, Delicate, Teardrop and Solid remain liquid.
- Track the live Auction House because raid progression can change supply sharply after each reset.
Raid allocation checklist
| Step | Raid action |
|---|---|
| Before Phase 3 | Confirm 375 Miners, 375 Jewelcrafters, Mount Hyjal access and the initial Scale of the Sands recipe plan |
| Before the first pull | Publish raw gem, boss design and mining-node ownership rules |
| After each loot drop | Record the raw color, recipient, intended item and required cut |
| When a boss design drops | Assign it only to an active 375 Jewelcrafter who will remain available to the roster |
| After the raid | Cut confirmed long-term upgrades first and keep uncertain gems raw until the gear plan is resolved |
| Before the next reset | Review demand, remaining stock, new reputation unlocks and missing class coverage |
Common epic gem mistakes
- Prospecting ordinary Outland ore for Phase 3 epic gems. The confirmed launch sources are inside Mount Hyjal and Black Temple.
- Giving a design to a non-Jewelcrafter. Phase 3 designs are Bind on Pickup and require 375 Jewelcrafting.
- Listing later cuts as launch designs. Quick, Reckless, Steady, Forceful and Purified should not be added to the core Phase 3 list without live confirmation.
- Gemming beyond a cap. Excess Hit or unneeded Defense can be worth less than a direct throughput or survival stat.
- Matching every socket automatically. A weak socket bonus may not compensate for replacing a strong pure cut with a hybrid.
- Ignoring the meta gem. Breaking its activation requirement can cost more performance than the epic upgrade adds.
- Using scarce gems in temporary gear. Early supply is better spent on pieces expected to last through Tier 6 progression.
- Assuming every class uses the same main stat. Talents, raid composition and current thresholds can change the best cut even within one class.
Final Phase 3 gem plan
Prepare one 375 Miner for Mount Hyjal and at least one dependable 375 Jewelcrafter for Indormi and boss-drop designs. Treat Crimson Spinel, Empyrean Sapphire, Lionseye, Shadowsong Amethyst, Pyrestone and Seaspray Emerald as a limited raid resource during early progression. Learn broadly useful Friendly designs first, expand into hybrid cuts at Honored, secure specialized Revered recipes, and distribute rare boss designs only to permanent crafters.
For gearing, satisfy Hit, Defense and meta requirements before stacking raw output. Tanks should protect effective health and crit immunity, healers should balance throughput with real encounter mana demands, physical DPS should compare Strength, Agility and Attack Power through their current build, and spell DPS should stop adding Hit once the relevant target is reached. Epic gems are most valuable when the cut, socket bonus and lifetime of the item all support the same plan.
