Need Help Progressing in TBC Classic?

Hunter is a ranged physical damage class built around weapon timing, pet control, threat management, and encounter preparation in TBC Classic Anniversary Edition. Beast Mastery delivers the highest personal and pet focused output in most raid conditions. Survival exchanges some personal damage for Expose Weakness and scales that raid benefit through Agility. Marksmanship supplies Trueshot Aura and a stronger Hunter centered damage profile. Every specialization must protect Auto Shot timing, maintain its pet, reach the correct hit target, and arrive with ammunition, enchants, gems, and consumables.

Hunter PvE Specializations at a Glance

All three Hunter specializations use Auto Shot, Steady Shot, Multi-Shot, Kill Command, Misdirection, and a combat pet, but they distribute damage and raid value differently. Beast Mastery depends most heavily on pet uptime. Survival is selected for the attack power granted by Expose Weakness. Marksmanship improves its party through Trueshot Aura and places more of its output on the Hunter. The table shows the main distinction between the three raid roles.

Beast Mastery Hunter PvE Guide

Beast Mastery is the general damage choice for a Hunter who can keep a pet attacking throughout the encounter. Serpent's Swiftness accelerates both sides of the Hunter and pet partnership, Bestial Wrath creates a strong burst window, and Ferocious Inspiration rewards pet critical strikes with a party damage increase. The specialization loses a large part of its value when the pet dies, cannot reach the target, or attacks an unsafe target.

Beast Mastery Talents and Raid Role

A widely used raid allocation spends 41 points in Beast Mastery and 20 in Marksmanship. The Beast Mastery core includes Improved Aspect of the Hawk, Focused Fire, Unleashed Fury, Ferocity, Bestial Discipline, Frenzy, Bestial Wrath, Ferocious Inspiration, Serpent's Swiftness, and The Beast Within. The Marksmanship points reach Go for the Throat and Mortal Shots while improving ranged critical strike chance and mana efficiency.

Utility points can move according to the encounter, but the pet damage, attack speed, and burst talents define the build. Keep Aspect of the Hawk active for normal damage and change to Aspect of the Viper only when mana would otherwise prevent future shots. Before the pull, confirm Hunter's Mark responsibility and use Misdirection on the assigned tank. A clean threat transfer is more valuable than beginning the personal rotation a moment early.

Beast Mastery Rotation and Pet Management

Start Auto Shot and allow each ranged swing to fire before beginning Steady Shot. The basic pattern places one Steady Shot after an Auto Shot without delaying the next Auto Shot. Replace a Steady Shot with Multi-Shot when Multi-Shot is available and additional targets will not break crowd control. Use Kill Command immediately after a qualifying critical strike whenever the pet can attack. It does not consume the normal global cooldown, but it cannot execute while the Hunter is in the middle of casting Steady Shot.

Weapon speed changes the correct rhythm. Rapid Fire, Bestial Wrath, Bloodlust or Heroism, Improved Aspect of the Hawk, and temporary Haste can shorten the gap until an extra ability would clip Auto Shot. Watch a ranged swing timer and reduce the number of inserted shots during heavy Haste. Aimed Shot is useful as a carefully timed opener or when its healing reduction is required, but its cast and swing interaction make it a poor routine filler.

A Ravager is a dependable raid pet because Gore spends Focus efficiently and the family has a strong damage modifier. A well supported Wind Serpent can become competitive when high Hunter critical strike chance produces enough Focus through Go for the Throat. Keep the pet at maximum happiness, train current damage abilities and Avoidance, and call it away before lethal ground effects. Bestial Wrath should be aligned with reliable pet access rather than activated while the pet is moving or endangered.

Beast Mastery Stats and Caps

Ranged attacks require 9 percent hit against a level 73 raid boss, equal to 142 hit rating at level 70. Heroic Presence lowers the equipment requirement to 126. Improved Faerie Fire lowers it to 95 when the debuff is guaranteed on the target, and combining both effects lowers it to 79. Keep an unassisted hit set available because party composition and debuff uptime can change between raids.

After hit, evaluate ranged weapon damage, Agility, attack power, critical strike, Armor Penetration, and Haste as a complete package. One Agility grants one ranged attack power and about 0.552 critical strike rating before percentage bonuses. Critical strikes activate Kill Command and feed the pet through Go for the Throat, while Armor Penetration grows stronger after the raid applies its armor reductions. Haste improves shot frequency but also changes the safe rotation, so a simulated gain only becomes real when the player adjusts timing.

Beast Mastery Gear and BiS

The Tier 6 Hunter set is Gronnstalker's Armor. Its two piece bonus improves mana gained through Aspect of the Viper, and its four piece bonus increases Steady Shot damage by 10 percent. Do not break a working Tier 5 or Tier 6 combination for one higher item level piece without comparing the complete set bonuses and hit total. Tier transitions commonly remove hit rating and require simultaneous changes in rings, cloak, gems, or melee weapons.

Important Phase 3 targets include Cursed Vision of Sargeras, Bristleblitz Striker, and Madness of the Betrayer. Dragonspine Trophy can remain competitive despite coming from earlier content because its Haste proc scales with an established damage set. These pieces are heavily contested, so compare realistic acquisition routes when planning regular TBC raid progression.

Survival Hunter PvE Guide

Survival is a raid support specialization centered on Expose Weakness. A ranged critical strike can place a debuff that grants attackers additional attack power based on 25 percent of the Survival Hunter's Agility. This makes personal Agility valuable to every physical damage dealer attacking that target. Survival still follows the normal Hunter shot rhythm and controls a pet, but its gearing and raid placement should be judged by total group gain rather than the Hunter's meter position alone.

Survival Talents and Raid Role

A common support framework uses 7 points in Beast Mastery, 20 in Marksmanship, and 34 in Survival. The build combines Improved Aspect of the Hawk and Focused Fire with Go for the Throat, Mortal Shots, Surefooted, Killer Instinct, Lightning Reflexes, and Expose Weakness. Surefooted reduces the hit required from gear, while Lightning Reflexes multiplies Agility and directly strengthens the raid debuff.

An alternative with zero points in Beast Mastery, 20 in Marksmanship, and 41 in Survival reaches Master Tactician and Readiness for additional critical strike windows and cooldown resets. The correct version depends on kill length, raid composition, pet uptime, and whether a second Rapid Fire window produces more value than the Beast Mastery investment. Whichever framework is selected, protect Expose Weakness uptime by attacking the assigned priority target and avoiding unnecessary target swaps.

Survival Rotation and Pet Management

Fire Auto Shot, insert Steady Shot after the ranged swing, and replace Steady Shot with Multi-Shot when Multi-Shot offers more damage without hitting a controlled target. Use Kill Command whenever available and keep the pet attacking safely. Survival lacks Serpent's Swiftness, so its slower base rhythm can create room for Arcane Shot without clipping the next Auto Shot. Serpent Sting is worthwhile when the target will live for its full duration and mana is secure, but it must not delay higher value shots.

Critical strike frequency maintains Expose Weakness, but forcing an extra shot that delays Auto Shot can lower both personal damage and debuff opportunities. During movement, use instant shots and stop briefly whenever mechanics allow an Auto Shot to fire. Readiness builds can reset Rapid Fire and other Hunter cooldowns, but the second use should be saved for a meaningful damage window rather than pressed immediately when the reset is available.

Survival uses the same reliable Ravager baseline as the other specializations. Its pet contributes less of the total damage than a Beast Mastery pet, yet losing the pet still removes Kill Command damage and Go for the Throat value. Keep the pet behind the boss, recall it before dangerous transitions, and use Mend Pet early enough that the healing can work before the next area attack.

Survival Stats and Caps

The base ranged hit requirement remains 9 percent, or 142 rating. Three points in Surefooted supply 3 percent hit, reducing the gear target to 95. Surefooted plus Heroic Presence leaves 5 percent, or 79 rating. If Improved Faerie Fire is also guaranteed, the remaining equipment target falls to about 48 without Heroic Presence or 32 with it. Never gear around a raid effect that is absent from the actual group or unreliable on target switches.

After the active hit target, Agility is the defining Survival stat because it supplies ranged attack power, critical strike value, and a larger Expose Weakness bonus. Lightning Reflexes and Blessing of Kings increase the return from base Agility on gear. Critical strike helps maintain the debuff, while attack power, Armor Penetration, Haste, and weapon damage improve personal output. Do not sacrifice a large amount of Agility for rating above the current hit cap.

Survival Gear and BiS

Survival often uses a different gear combination from Beast Mastery because raw Agility and reliable Expose Weakness uptime matter more. Gronnstalker's Armor remains the Tier 6 destination, especially when four pieces can be equipped without losing the required hit. Keep older high Agility pieces until the complete replacement package is available.

Halberd of Desolation combines Agility, hit, and attack power in one melee slot, while Don Alejandro's Money Belt is a strong Agility focused waist option. Bristleblitz Striker is the raw ranged damage target for most races. Survival should still compare the raid wide value of an upgrade with its effect on hit and Expose Weakness rather than equipping every nominal BiS drop immediately.

Marksmanship Hunter PvE Guide

Marksmanship places more damage on the Hunter and supports its party with Trueshot Aura. It does not match the pet scaling of Beast Mastery or the raid wide physical support of Expose Weakness, but it remains functional for groups that specifically need its aura, ranged control, or Silencing Shot. The specialization rewards the same accurate shot timing while placing extra importance on personal ranged stats.

Marksmanship Talents and Raid Role

A practical raid framework uses 14 points in Beast Mastery, 44 in Marksmanship, and 3 in Survival. Core talents include Improved Aspect of the Hawk, Focused Fire, Lethal Shots, Go for the Throat, Mortal Shots, Barrage, Ranged Weapon Specialization, Careful Aim, Trueshot Aura, Master Marksman, and Silencing Shot. The final Survival points can follow the creature types expected in the current raid.

Keep Trueshot Aura active for the assigned physical damage party and use Silencing Shot when an encounter requires a ranged silence. Improved Hunter's Mark is valuable only when the raid has agreed that this Hunter will maintain the mark and enough physical attackers benefit from it. Do not spend support points twice across several Hunters without checking assignments before the raid.

Marksmanship Rotation and Pet Management

Marksmanship also builds its rotation around Auto Shot. Fire the ranged swing, cast Multi-Shot when available and safe, and otherwise insert Steady Shot without clipping the next Auto Shot. Use Kill Command as soon as a ranged critical strike enables it. Arcane Shot can fill a genuine open window or provide damage while moving, but adding it mechanically to every cycle may delay Auto Shot and waste mana.

Precast Aimed Shot so it finishes at the pull when the tank and encounter permit. During sustained combat, its long cast and interaction with the ranged swing make it situational rather than a standard filler. Rapid Fire belongs in a period of uninterrupted target access. Haste effects change the cycle, so shorten the rotation during burst instead of trying to force the same number of abilities between faster Auto Shots.

A Ravager remains a safe pet choice, while a Wind Serpent can spend excess Focus effectively in a high critical strike setup. Marksmanship does not have Beast Mastery's pet survival and damage talents, so manual control is essential. Keep the pet happy, use its mobility ability for reconnecting after movement, and recall it before mechanics that cannot be healed through efficiently.

Marksmanship Stats and Caps

Without Surefooted, Marksmanship needs 142 hit rating for the 9 percent ranged cap. Heroic Presence reduces that number to 126, Improved Faerie Fire reduces it to 95, and both together reduce it to 79. Hit beyond the active cap gives no ranged benefit, so keep swap pieces for groups with different support instead of locking excess rating into every configuration.

Phase 3 equipment introduces useful Armor Penetration and stronger physical damage combinations. After hit, compare Armor Penetration, Agility, critical strike, Haste, attack power, and ranged weapon damage through the entire set. Agility gains additional value from percentage buffs, and Intellect contributes ranged attack power through Careful Aim without becoming a stat to stack by itself. Haste remains execution dependent because clipped Auto Shots can erase its theoretical advantage.

Marksmanship Gear and BiS

Marksmanship can use four pieces of Gronnstalker's Armor for the Steady Shot bonus while filling other slots with high value off-set pieces. Cursed Vision of Sargeras is a powerful head option when the surrounding pieces preserve the better set combination and hit cap. Shadowmoon Destroyer's Drape helps rebuild hit while supplying critical strike and attack power.

Bristleblitz Striker is the main raw damage bow target, while Black Bow of the Betrayer trades some direct output for a useful mana return effect. Stormrage Signet Ring is a strong Armor Penetration and hit option when the raid's allocation rules allow it. Players building these combinations through Illidan progression can plan around regular Black Temple raid access rather than assuming every contested item will arrive quickly.

Hunter Gems, Enchants and Consumables

Permanent upgrades and pull preparation apply to all three specializations. Survival usually favors the most Agility heavy gem package, while Beast Mastery and Marksmanship may accept more hit or attack power when it completes a stronger set. Enchants should be installed before comparing gear because a missing scope, leg armor, or weapon enchant can change both stat balance and shot performance.

Hunter Gems and Permanent Enchants

Relentless Earthstorm Diamond is the standard physical damage meta gem. Activate it with useful mixed colors rather than filling weak socket bonuses blindly. Delicate Crimson Spinel is the direct Phase 3 Agility choice, while Glinting Pyrestone combines Agility and hit when a mixed socket helps reach the exact cap.

Enchanting characters can also apply Enchant Ring Stats to their own rings. Before replacing gems, calculate the complete hit total with the intended raid support and then fill remaining sockets for damage. Survival generally receives the greatest raid return from additional Agility, but every specialization should ignore a weak socket bonus when a better gem package produces more total value.

Hunter Consumables, Ammunition and Raid Preparation

Flask of Relentless Assault is the dependable progression flask, and Grilled Mudfish supplies 20 Agility from food. Use a Haste Potion for a controlled burst window when mana will last through the encounter. On a long fight, Fel Mana Potion can restore 3200 mana over time, but it uses the same potion cooldown and applies a spell damage and healing penalty. Hunter physical shots are the reason that penalty is usually acceptable.

Flame Cap can add temporary fire procs to ranged attacks, while Dark Rune provides mana at the cost of health. They share an item cooldown category, so choose the effect that solves the current encounter and never assume both will be available in the same window. Carry enough pet food to preserve maximum happiness, repair before the raid, and bring spare consumables for repeated progression pulls.

Phase 3 Hunters with Honored reputation from The Scale of the Sands can purchase Timeless Arrow or Timeless Shell. Both add 53 damage per second and should be matched to the equipped ranged weapon. Fill the quiver or ammo pouch before entering the raid and keep an emergency reserve in normal bags. Running out of ammunition removes nearly the entire damage rotation and cannot be repaired by better gear.

Final Verdict

Beast Mastery is the strongest general personal damage option when pet uptime is reliable. Survival earns its raid place by converting Agility and ranged critical strikes into Expose Weakness for the physical damage roster. Marksmanship offers Trueshot Aura, ranged control, and a Hunter focused alternative when the group specifically values its toolkit. Whichever specialization is selected, cap hit for the real raid composition, protect Auto Shot timing, keep the pet alive and happy, and treat ammunition, enchants, gems, and consumables as part of the character rather than optional additions.
