GTA 6 Animals & Wildlife: 170+ Species Confirmed

GTA 6 Animals & Wildlife: 170+ Species Confirmed

GTA 6 features more than 170 animal species across land, air and sea, making Leonida one of Rockstar's most wildlife-rich open worlds. Game Informer's September 2026 cover story confirms native animals including alligators, flamingos, manatees and pelicans, invasive species such as green iguanas and rhesus macaques, and special Rare, Discoverable and Legendary animals that players can track.

Last updated: October 1, 2026. This guide separates animals Rockstar or Game Informer explicitly names from species merely identified in official footage, preview reporting or community analysis.

The original wildlife reveal is available in Game Informer's GTA VI wildlife report.

Grassrivers is one of GTA VI's most wildlife-heavy regions, with wetlands, mangroves and alligators.

Why We Do Not Call Every Trailer Animal “Confirmed by Rockstar”

There are currently four useful evidence levels:

Evidence levelWhat it means
Officially namedRockstar or a Rockstar developer explicitly identifies the species.
Officially shownThe animal is clearly visible in Rockstar footage or screenshots.
Preview identifiedJournalists who viewed official Rockstar material identify the species.
Community identifiedFans identify an animal from a frame, shape or older material.

We do not use old leaked builds as proof that an animal will appear in the final game.

Rare, Discoverable and Legendary Animals

Some GTA 6 animals are categorized as Rare, Discoverable and Legendary.

Game Informer confirms that players can track certain animals within those categories, building directly on ideas Rockstar developed in Red Dead Redemption.

Rockstar is deliberately keeping the identities of the hardest-to-find animals secret.

That means current articles claiming specific creatures such as a Legendary Florida Panther, Legendary Alligator or Legendary Shark are speculation unless a source explicitly identifies them.

How Detailed Are GTA 6 Animals?

Rockstar is not treating wildlife as static environmental decoration.

Game Informer's report says the animal technology includes:

  • iridescence;
  • bioluminescence;
  • translucency;
  • different feather types;
  • new hair and fur systems;
  • coat and pelt variation;
  • environmental interaction.

Later coverage of the full feature also describes fur reacting to moisture, dirt, matting and clumping.

The important point is that Rockstar appears to be carrying forward the detailed animal-rendering philosophy of Red Dead Redemption 2 into a modern Florida-inspired environment.

Animals by GTA 6 Region

The 170+ species are spread across very different Leonida biomes rather than concentrated in one wilderness zone.

Grassrivers: Alligators and Wetland Wildlife

Grassrivers wetlands in GTA 6
Grassrivers is Leonida's Everglades-inspired ecosystem and one of the strongest wildlife locations shown so far.

Grassrivers is the clearest wildlife-focused region Rockstar has revealed.

Its mangroves, shallow water and flooded grasslands create natural habitat for:

  • alligators;
  • wetland birds;
  • reptiles;
  • amphibians;
  • fish;
  • other swamp wildlife.

Alligators have appeared repeatedly in GTA VI marketing, including scenes close to people and populated areas.

That suggests wildlife is not restricted to remote wilderness.

Mount Kalaga: Hunting and Forest Animals

Mount Kalaga National Park wildlife habitat in GTA VI
Mount Kalaga National Park is officially associated with hunting, fishing and wilderness exploration.

Rockstar's official description of Mount Kalaga directly associates the region with hunting and fishing.

Separate authorized preview reporting from September also attributes more detail to Rockstar North's Rob Nelson:

  • hunting can be used to earn money;
  • the hunting system is unlocked through a friend connected to Jason;
  • fishing is catch-and-release rather than a way to sell or eat fish;
  • fishing includes challenges and collectibles.

These details come from developer interview/pre-release coverage rather than the September 29 Game Informer wildlife article, so we keep that distinction visible.

Leonida Keys: Marine Life

Leonida Keys coastal environment in GTA VI
Leonida's large coastal and island areas give marine wildlife far more space than a typical GTA city map.

The Leonida Keys, beaches, bays and open ocean greatly expand GTA VI's marine environment.

Current full-feature reporting mentions:

  • sharks;
  • whales;
  • rays;
  • turtles;
  • jellyfish;
  • fish;
  • manatees.

Rockstar has not yet published a complete list of individual shark, whale, ray or fish species.

Can You Hunt Animals in GTA 6?

Yes, hunting is part of GTA VI.

Mount Kalaga's official Rockstar profile explicitly mentions hunting, and developer-interview reporting says it can become a way to earn money.

What is still unknown:

  • which animals can legally or mechanically be hunted;
  • what each animal pays;
  • whether pelts, meat and trophies are separate resources;
  • whether Rare or Legendary animals can be hunted;
  • the exact hunting progression system.

We will not assume GTA VI copies Red Dead Redemption 2's skinning and crafting systems unless the final game confirms them.

How Does Fishing Work?

Fishing is confirmed, but it works differently from Red Dead Redemption 2.

Developer-interview reporting says GTA VI fishing is catch and release:

  • you catch fish;
  • the fish are returned to the water;
  • you do not keep them for food;
  • you do not sell them as a normal income source;
  • the activity is linked to challenges and collectibles.

Rockstar has not published the full fishing equipment, bait, rod or species list.

Can You Study or Track Animals?

Tracking is confirmed for certain Rare, Discoverable and Legendary wildlife.

Separate authorized-preview reporting also describes a broader animal-study or wildlife-log system inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2.

The safest current distinction is:

MechanicStatus
Rare / Discoverable / Legendary categoriesConfirmed by Game Informer
Tracking certain special animalsConfirmed
Broad wildlife checklist / compendiumReported from authorized previews
Exact completion rewardUnknown

Can You Pet Dogs?

Authorized preview reporting says dogs can be interacted with, including actions such as petting, studying or scolding them.

That is another sign that animals are designed as interactive world entities rather than purely visual props.

Rockstar has not announced a GTA VI pet-ownership system.

Will GTA 6 Have a Zoo?

Pre-release preview coverage describes an explorable zoo containing animals that can contribute to the broader wildlife-discovery system.

However, Rockstar has not yet published a dedicated official zoo page, map location or complete species roster.

So we would currently label the zoo:

Reported in authorized preview coverage, but not yet fully documented by Rockstar on its public GTA VI site.

GTA 6 Wildlife vs Red Dead Redemption 2

GTA VI clearly inherits some wildlife philosophy from Red Dead Redemption 2, but the systems should not be treated as identical.
