GTA 6 brings back a real body and fitness system: food can change Jason and Lucia's weight, exercise builds and tones their muscles, and long periods without sleep can visibly affect their appearance. Rockstar has also confirmed tracked health, cardio and fitness attributes, interactive gym workouts, stamina management and temporary food and drink buffs.
Last updated: October 1, 2026. This guide separates mechanics directly described by Rockstar developers from formulas, stat caps and optimization strategies that have not yet been published.
The strongest current sources are Dazed's interview with Rockstar, Famitsu's interview with Rockstar North's Rob Nelson and Rockstar's GTA VI Extended Look.

Can You Gain Weight in GTA 6?
Yes. Rockstar's developers have directly confirmed that what Jason and Lucia eat affects their body weight.
Famitsu's interview goes even further: Rob Nelson says players can make the protagonists muscular through training or make them heavier by eating a lot.
That makes GTA VI the first mainline GTA in many years to return to the idea that the protagonist's body visibly reflects the player's lifestyle.
However, Rockstar has not revealed:
- calories for individual foods;
- how quickly weight is gained;
- exact minimum and maximum body weight;
- whether different foods cause different amounts of weight gain;
- whether body weight naturally decreases over time;
- an optimal weight-loss routine.
Can Jason and Lucia Build Muscle?
Yes. Exercise visibly builds and tones their muscles.
This is more than a cosmetic outfit system. Rockstar describes physical changes to the protagonists themselves based on how the player treats their bodies.
The system applies to both protagonists rather than only Jason or only Lucia.
What remains unknown is the full range of possible body shapes and whether both characters have identical muscle-growth limits.
How the GTA 6 Gym Works
Famitsu's direct interview provides the clearest explanation of gym gameplay so far.
According to Rob Nelson, working out is an interactive minigame, not simply a menu where the player presses “train” and receives a stat increase.
Stamina matters during each workout
Your stamina decreases as you continue an exercise. The goal is to complete the set before stamina runs out.
But simply performing the movement as quickly as possible is not necessarily optimal. Nelson explains that moving too fast puts additional strain on the body, so players need to balance speed and endurance.
Workout routines contain multiple exercises
The demonstration described to Famitsu used a routine with three exercises, followed by rest.
Nelson then described repeating the training process across several days to improve the protagonist's physical condition.
This establishes a real training loop, although Rockstar has not published a universal schedule proving that every stat increase always requires exactly the same number of exercises or days.
Gym equipment is interactive
Nelson says most of the equipment inside the gym can be used, with pull-ups given as one example.
That suggests gyms are intended as playable spaces rather than decorative interiors.
What Stats Does GTA 6 Track?
Famitsu reports three physical categories directly discussed by Rockstar:
- Health;
- Cardio;
- Fitness.
Rockstar has not yet published the final UI, numerical ranges or full progression table for these attributes.
Training Can Increase Base Health and Stamina
This is one of the most important distinctions between temporary consumable buffs and real character progression.
Rob Nelson explains that training can improve the base values of health and stamina.
| Effect | Type |
|---|---|
| Training health/stamina improvement | Base progression |
| Energy drink stamina increase | Temporary buff |
| Other food/drink effects | Temporary buffs depending on item |
| Weight gain from eating | Body-state change |
| Muscle development from exercise | Body-state/progression change |
This makes the body system more important than a purely visual San Andreas-style callback.
How Food Works in GTA 6
Food can affect both body weight and character condition.
Rockstar's current interviews establish two separate roles:
- what and how much you eat can affect the protagonists' weight;
- consumables can provide temporary buffs to character gauges.
Nelson gives an energy drink increasing the stamina gauge as a direct example.
That does not mean every food item has been revealed or that GTA VI uses a full calorie-counting simulator.
Protein Shakes and Protein Bars
Famitsu's gym demonstration also references finishing training with a protein shake and protein bar.
This supports the link between training, food and recovery, but Rockstar has not published exact numerical protein bonuses, recovery percentages or a bodybuilding nutrition formula.
Any current “best GTA 6 diet” or “fastest muscle food” guide would therefore be premature.
Does Sleep Matter in GTA 6?
Yes, but Rockstar has confirmed the visual consequences more clearly than the numerical ones.
Dazed reports that spending long periods away from bed can visibly affect Jason and Lucia.
Examples include:
- extended periods without sleep;
- being on the run from police for a long time;
- multi-day drinking or partying sessions.
The resulting condition can show in their faces and bodies.
Rockstar has not yet published a complete sleep meter, exact sleep requirement or a confirmed list of combat penalties caused by fatigue.
Is There a Fatigue or Exhaustion System?
There is clearly a persistent physical-condition system, but it is important not to overstate what has been confirmed.
| Claim | Status |
|---|---|
| Lack of sleep changes appearance | Confirmed |
| Long periods on the run can visibly wear characters down | Confirmed |
| Multi-day benders affect appearance | Confirmed |
| A numbered sleep meter exists | Not officially detailed |
| Exhaustion reduces weapon accuracy | Not confirmed |
| Missing sleep automatically lowers health | Not confirmed |
GTA 6 vs San Andreas Weight System
The obvious comparison is GTA: San Andreas, where CJ's fat, muscle and stamina could change based on eating and exercise.
| System | GTA: San Andreas | GTA VI |
|---|---|---|
| Weight changes | Yes | Confirmed |
| Visible muscle growth | Yes | Confirmed |
| Gym workouts | Yes | Confirmed |
| Stamina/cardio progression | Yes | Confirmed in updated form |
| Temporary food/drink buffs | Limited | Confirmed |
| Sleep visibly affecting appearance | No comparable system | Confirmed |
| Two protagonists affected | No | Jason and Lucia |
So GTA VI is not simply restoring the San Andreas gym. It combines body appearance, physical stats, consumables and persistent lifestyle feedback into a broader system.
Does Being Muscular Change Combat?
Rockstar has not published a complete muscle-to-damage formula.
We know training can improve base physical stats and can visibly change muscle development. That is not enough to claim that every increase in muscle directly adds a specific percentage to melee damage.
Exact effects such as:
- melee damage;
- damage resistance;
- weapon recoil;
- running speed;
- climbing ability;
- carrying capacity;
should be treated as unknown until Rockstar or release-build testing confirms them.
Does Weight Change Gameplay?
Weight change itself is confirmed; the complete gameplay penalty/bonus model is not.
Rockstar has not yet provided a table showing that heavier characters necessarily:
- run slower;
- lose stamina faster;
- take more damage;
- hit harder;
- move differently during stealth;
- receive different dialogue.
Those are exactly the kinds of details we will test after release rather than fill with guesses beforehand.
Jason vs Lucia: Is the Fitness System Different?
Both protagonists can be physically affected by food, exercise and lifestyle.
There are also narrative reasons for both characters to interact with physical activities:
- Jason has a military background;
- Lucia is explicitly presented as a fighter;
- official imagery already shows Lucia training with a punching bag.
Rockstar has not said that one character has a higher maximum fitness stat, faster muscle gain or different calorie requirements.
See our GTA 6 Characters guide for their confirmed backgrounds.
What We Will Test After GTA 6 Launches
This page should become a measured fitness guide rather than remain a pre-release explainer.

|---|---|
| Weight gain | Foods, quantities and in-game time required |
| Weight loss | Training/cardio requirements and rate of change |
| Muscle gain | Exercises, sets, recovery and progression speed |
| Health progression | Exact base-stat increases |
| Stamina progression | Training effect and stat ceiling |
| Food buffs | Effect, duration and stacking rules |
| Sleep | Time thresholds and any mechanical penalties |
| Stat decay | Whether muscle/fitness declines without maintenance |
| Jason vs Lucia | Any protagonist-specific differences |
What Is Still Not Confirmed?
- Exact calorie values.
- Maximum and minimum weight.
- Maximum muscle level.
- The complete fitness stat scale.
- The fastest muscle-building workout.
- The fastest way to lose weight.
- Exact recovery time between workouts.
- Whether fitness decays over time.
- Exact effects of weight on combat and movement.
- Exact effects of muscle on melee damage.
- A complete sleep/fatigue formula.
- All gym locations in Leonida.
