GTA 6 Weather System: Hurricanes, Storms, Rain & Puddles

GTA 6 Weather System: Hurricanes, Storms, Rain & Puddles

GTA 6 officially features hurricanes, tropical storms, localized rain, dynamic cloud formations, persistent puddles and rainbows. Rockstar has redesigned Leonida's weather around the tropical climate of real-world Florida, meaning one part of the map can remain sunny while heavy rain falls somewhere else.

Last updated: October 1, 2026. Rockstar has confirmed that hurricanes exist, but has not revealed how frequently they occur, whether they flood roads, damage property, change vehicle handling or affect missions.

The latest details come from Game Informer's September 29 weather reveal, based on its interviews with Rockstar Games.

For the wider systems surrounding Leonida, see our GTA 6 Gameplay guide. We also cover the latest Rockstar interview in our GTA 6 Game Informer breakdown.

How GTA 6's Localized Weather Works

The biggest confirmed change is that weather is localized rather than simply applied to the entire map at once.

Game Informer describes a situation where you can be standing in a dry, sunny part of Leonida while a dark storm is actively dumping rain in the distance.

That means GTA VI can theoretically have:

  • sunshine in one district;
  • heavy rain somewhere else;
  • a storm front visible from far away;
  • different environmental conditions across Leonida at the same moment.

This matters on a map spanning beaches, islands, swamps, cities, agricultural land and northern wilderness.

Does GTA 6 Really Have Hurricanes?

Yes. Hurricanes are now officially confirmed for GTA VI.

This is an important change from earlier coverage. Before Game Informer's September 29 report, players could see stormy weather and hurricane references in Rockstar material, but there was no direct public confirmation that actual hurricanes were part of the weather system.

Game Informer now states that Florida experiences tropical storms and seasonal hurricanes, and that the same is true of Leonida.

What that does not tell us is how a GTA VI hurricane actually functions.

Still unknown about hurricanes

  • how often they appear;
  • whether they are random or scripted;
  • whether they are tied to story chapters;
  • whether there is a hurricane season;
  • whether the player receives warnings;
  • whether roads flood;
  • whether bridges close;
  • whether boats become harder to control;
  • whether NPC routines change;
  • whether businesses close;
  • whether missions can be interrupted;
  • whether storms cause physical destruction.

Until Rockstar explains these systems or the final game can be tested, those should remain questions rather than features presented as fact.

Dynamic Clouds Instead of a Simple Weather Switch

Rockstar confirms dynamic cloudscapes rolling across Leonida.

The practical result is a continuum between:

  • clear skies;
  • partly cloudy conditions;
  • heavier cloud cover;
  • localized rain;
  • strong storms;
  • tropical storms and hurricanes.

Because storms can be localized, clouds are not simply a cosmetic skybox change affecting the whole state simultaneously.

Rain Leaves the World Wet After the Storm

Weather has persistence.

Game Informer confirms that after rain moves away, the environment can still show evidence of what happened.

That includes:

  • persistent puddles;
  • wet roads;
  • wet environmental surfaces;
  • visual evidence that an area was recently hit by rain.

This is an important distinction from a basic system where the rain stops and the environment immediately returns to a completely dry state.

Wetland regions such as Grassrivers make persistent surface conditions especially relevant, although Rockstar has not confirmed dynamic flooding.

Rainbows Are Confirmed

Rainbows can form after rainfall when lighting conditions are suitable.

This sounds like a small visual detail, but it demonstrates that GTA VI's weather system is connected to environmental lighting rather than consisting only of fixed rain effects.

Rockstar has not said whether double rainbows, fogbows or other specific atmospheric phenomena exist.

Can Weather Be Different Across Vice City and Leonida?

Yes, localized weather means conditions can differ between areas.

Rockstar has not published region-by-region weather probabilities, but the geography creates several very different environments:

RegionEnvironmentWhat is confirmed about regional weather?
Vice CityDense tropical city and coastNo unique weather table announced
Leonida KeysLow-lying islands and open waterPart of the same tropical weather system; no storm-frequency data
GrassriversWetlands and mangrovesWeather persistence confirmed globally; flooding mechanics unknown
Port GellhornDeveloped coastlineNo region-specific storm mechanics announced
AmbrosiaAgricultural and industrial interiorNo crop/weather mechanics confirmed
Mount KalagaNorthern wildernessNo special mountain-weather system announced

See our GTA 6 Locations guide for the complete regional breakdown.

Do GTA 6 Hurricanes Cause Flooding?

Flooding is not confirmed.

This is currently one of the biggest examples of rumor expanding beyond the actual announcement.

Rockstar confirms:

  • rain;
  • persistent puddles;
  • wet surfaces;
  • tropical storms;
  • hurricanes.

Rockstar has not confirmed:

  • rivers overflowing;
  • streets becoming submerged;
  • flash floods;
  • storm surge;
  • water entering interiors;
  • roads becoming inaccessible.

A hurricane system makes those features plausible, but plausible is not the same as confirmed.

Will Rain Change Vehicle Handling?

Rockstar has not yet confirmed a specific wet-road handling model.

Wet roads and puddles remain visible after rain, but we do not yet know whether this changes:

  • tire grip;
  • braking distances;
  • hydroplaning;
  • motorcycle handling;
  • off-road traction;
  • vehicle damage.

That question will be especially relevant for the vehicle system covered in our GTA 6 Cars & Vehicles guide.

Will Hurricanes Affect Missions?

Unknown.

Game Informer explicitly says it does not yet know how the larger storms affect gameplay or storytelling.

Therefore we cannot currently say whether:

  • a hurricane is part of a story mission;
  • missions dynamically pause during extreme weather;
  • some activities only appear during storms;
  • NPCs seek shelter;
  • police behavior changes;
  • shops close;
  • air or boat travel becomes unavailable.

Are GTA 6 Hurricanes Random?

Rockstar has not revealed whether hurricanes are:

  • fully random dynamic events;
  • rare world events;
  • scheduled by an internal weather cycle;
  • seasonal;
  • triggered by story progression;
  • scripted for specific missions.

Anyone publishing an exact hurricane frequency before release is currently estimating.

Are Tornadoes Confirmed in GTA 6?

No.

Hurricanes and tropical storms are confirmed. Tornadoes are not.

That distinction matters because online lists increasingly combine every severe-weather event that can occur in real Florida and present them as GTA VI features.

What About Lightning?

Storm imagery in Game Informer's new GTA VI screenshots shows lightning associated with a distant storm front.

However, Rockstar has not explained whether lightning can:

  • strike the player;
  • hit vehicles;
  • start fires;
  • damage electrical infrastructure;
  • affect missions.

For now, lightning is visually supported, while a separate lightning-damage mechanic is not confirmed.

Why Localized Weather Matters More Than Hurricanes

Hurricanes generate the headline, but localized and persistent weather may be the more important everyday gameplay change.

Consider a simple open-world journey:

  1. You leave Vice City under clear skies.
  2. A dark cloud formation is visible elsewhere in Leonida.
  3. That area receives rain while your current location remains dry.
  4. The storm passes.
  5. You later enter that area and find puddles and wet surfaces.
  6. Under suitable lighting, a rainbow may appear after the shower.

Steps 1–6 illustrate confirmed system behavior in principle. They do not imply that every exact journey above is a scripted sequence.

GTA 6 Weather vs GTA 5

We cannot yet compare every technical parameter, but the confirmed design difference is substantial.

What Is Still Unknown About GTA 6 Weather?

  • Hurricane frequency.
  • Whether hurricanes are random or scripted.
  • Whether Leonida has an in-game hurricane season.
  • Whether storms alter driving physics.
  • Whether water levels dynamically rise.
  • Whether roads can flood.
  • Whether storm surge exists.
  • Whether tornadoes exist.
  • Whether lightning causes damage.
  • Whether businesses and NPC routines react to severe weather.
  • Whether missions change based on weather.
  • Whether extreme weather can damage vehicles or buildings.
