Need Help Progressing in Path of Exile 2?

This Path of Exile 2 Soul Cores guide lists all 52 Soul Cores available in patch 0.5.5, where they come from, their exact current effects, socket limits, and the equipment that benefits most from each one. Most Soul Cores are rewards from the Trial of Chaos, while the four Ancient Thesis variants are unpredictable Core Destabiliser outcomes. The effect text below follows the current item data; the recommended uses are practical build advice, not developer rankings.

Patch 0.5.5 changed both the Soul Core pool and the activity that supplies it. Grinding Gear Games added 17 new cores, revised several older effects, placed a reward chest after every Trial room, and changed completed Trial rewards to Currency and Soul Cores only. The full list of additions and balance changes is in the official Path of Exile 2 0.5.5 patch notes. Older tables that still show pre-0.5.5 values such as 20% attribute conversion, 30% Freeze Buildup, or the former Atmohua Retreat thresholds are outdated.

Path of Exile 2 Soul Cores in Patch 0.5.5

Soul Cores are Augments that add a fixed modifier when placed into a compatible equipment socket. The same core can produce different effects depending on whether it enters a weapon, helmet, body armour, gloves, boots, shield, or Focus. A core is therefore not automatically valuable to every build: its target slot, the item's remaining usefulness, the core's limit, and the opportunity cost of another Augment all matter.

The current pool breaks into three practical groups. Sixteen base Soul Cores cover common stats such as resistance, ailments, sustain, Spirit, and attribute requirements. Thirty-two level 50 specialist cores include older build-specific options plus the 17 additions from 0.5.5. Four level 60 Thesis cores are Ancient Augments with three possible slot effects apiece. The broader Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5 overview explains the surrounding Trial and league changes without mixing them into this item reference.

How Soul Core Sockets, Limits, and Removal Work

Before using a Soul Core, confirm that the target item can accept an Augment and that the listed slot matches the effect you want. Martial Weapon does not mean every weapon, and a modifier restricted to Bow, Sceptre, Focus, Wand, or Staff will not activate on an unrelated item class. Treat the socket as part of the finished item plan, not as a temporary stat that can be moved freely.

Augment sockets and Limit 1

An Artificer's Orb adds an Augment Socket to an eligible Martial Weapon, Wand, Staff, or piece of Armour. The number of sockets an item can support depends on its item class and current rules. A Soul Core marked Limited to 1 is limited to one equipped copy per character, not one copy per item. If multiple equipped items contain the same Limited Augment, the affected items can be disabled. Ancient Augments use a shared character-wide limit of one across the entire Ancient Augment category. Several basic cores have no listed limit in the current data, but filling multiple sockets with one effect still gives up every competing Rune or Soul Core that could occupy those sockets.

Legacy equipment can retain combinations created before a limit was introduced, but equipping more copies than the current character-wide limit can disable items containing the restricted Augment. For a new craft, follow the limit printed on the current core instead of copying an old showcase item.

Removal, Orb of Extraction, and Socket-bound cores

A normal socketed Soul Core cannot be removed and kept by normal means, but it can be replaced by another Augment, which destroys the old core. An Orb of Extraction instead destroys the equipment and returns its non-Socket-bound Augments. Atziri's four 0.5.5 Soul Cores explicitly carry the Socket-bound tag: once socketed, a Socket-bound Augment cannot be removed, replaced, or extracted by any means. Finish ordinary crafting, quality, socket planning, and your replacement check before committing one to valuable gear. The PoE 2 currency and crafting guide covers Artificer's Orbs, Vaal Orbs, and the order of irreversible item steps.

If repeated Trial runs are the obstacle rather than item planning, a Path of Exile 2 Trial of Chaos run is the relevant service because Soul Cores belong to that reward pool. It does not guarantee a named core: Grinding Gear Games has not published individual Soul Core drop rates, and random rewards remain random.

All 16 Base Soul Cores and Their Best Uses

These are the general-purpose Soul Cores most likely to solve ordinary build problems. The table uses the exact 0.5.5 values and names every valid equipment category. Source means the normal acquisition route; trading is available only in trade-enabled leagues. The recommendation column explains where the modifier earns its socket rather than assigning a universal tier.

Soul CoreLimitExact 0.5.5 effectSourceRecommended equipment use
Soul Core of Vizoma1Martial Weapon: +150 to Accuracy Rating.
Wand or Staff: 30% increased Critical Hit Chance for Spells.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeUse on a Martial Weapon only when hit chance is the build's real damage bottleneck. Spell critical builds should use the Wand or Staff version when 30% increased spell critical chance beats another weapon Augment.
Soul Core of TacatiNo listed limitMartial Weapon: 25% increased Magnitude of Poison you inflict.
Armour: +13% to Chaos Resistance.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeChoose the weapon effect for a build that already poisons reliably and scales poison damage. Use the Armour effect to close a Chaos Resistance gap; it does not require a poison build.
Soul Core of Opiloti1Martial Weapon: 40% increased Magnitude of Bleeding you inflict.
Helmet: 25% increased Pin duration.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeThe weapon version belongs on a dedicated Bleed attacker. The helmet version is narrower and is worthwhile only when Pin uptime contributes to control or a specific skill interaction.
Soul Core of Jiquani1Martial Weapon: Recover 5% of maximum Life on Kill.
Body Armour: 5% increased maximum Life.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeBody Armour provides broad value to Life builds and also works during bosses. The weapon effect is mapping sustain and stops helping when there are no enemies to kill.
Soul Core of Zalatl1Martial Weapon: Recover 4% of maximum Mana on Kill.
Helmet: 5% increased maximum Mana.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeMana-stacking builds usually prefer the helmet effect because it remains active everywhere. The weapon version is useful for clearing dense areas but cannot solve single-target Mana sustain by itself.
Soul Core of CitaqualotlNo listed limitMartial Weapon: 40% increased Elemental Damage with Attacks.
Armour: +6% to all Elemental Resistances.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeUse the weapon effect for elemental attacks, not spells. The Armour effect is efficient resistance fixing when all three elemental resistances need help, especially on a piece with otherwise strong modifiers.
Soul Core of Puhuarte1Martial Weapon: 40% increased Ignite Magnitude.
Gloves: +2% to Maximum Fire Resistance.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeIgnite attackers want the weapon version when Ignite is a major damage source. The glove effect is a defensive endgame choice for builds that can already raise Fire Resistance to the new maximum.
Soul Core of Tzamoto1Martial Weapon: 60% increased Freeze Buildup.
Helmet: +2% to Maximum Cold Resistance.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeThe weapon effect supports reliable freezes against tougher targets. The helmet version is for a capped Cold Resistance setup that can actually fill the extra maximum.
Soul Core of Xopec1Martial Weapon: 25% increased Magnitude of Shock you inflict.
Boots: +2% to Maximum Lightning Resistance.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeShock-based attackers use the weapon effect to make applied Shocks stronger. The boot effect is a durable defensive option only if the build can supply enough Lightning Resistance to reach the raised cap.
Soul Core of AzcapaNo listed limitMartial Weapon: +15 to Spirit.
Gloves: 10% increased Quantity of Gold Dropped by Slain Enemies.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradePut it in a weapon when 15 Spirit crosses a reservation breakpoint and activates a needed persistent skill or minion. Gold quantity belongs on dedicated farming gloves and provides no direct combat power.
Soul Core of Topotante1Martial Weapon: Attacks with this Weapon Penetrate 25% Elemental Resistances.
Boots: 25% reduced Effect of Non-Damaging Ailments on you.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeThe weapon version is a strong bossing option for elemental attacks using that weapon. The boot version reduces Chill, Shock, and other non-damaging ailment effects but is not complete ailment immunity.
Soul Core of QuipolatlNo listed limitMartial Weapon: 5% increased Attack Speed.
Boots: 15% reduced Slowing Potency of Debuffs on You.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeAttack builds can use the weapon effect as a simple speed upgrade. Choose boots when slowing debuffs are the larger survival or mobility problem; the modifier does not remove every slow.
Soul Core of Ticaba1Martial Weapon: +5% to Critical Damage Bonus.
Body Armour, Shield, or Buckler: Hits against you have 50% reduced Critical Damage Bonus.
Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeUse the weapon effect only on a build with dependable critical hits. The defensive effect is better for characters protecting themselves from dangerous enemy critical hits, particularly on a shield or body armour with a spare socket.
Soul Core of AtmohuaNo listed limitMartial Weapon or Armour: Convert 40% of Requirements to Strength.Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeUse on an otherwise correct item that your Strength-heavy character cannot equip efficiently. It adds no direct combat stat once requirements are already comfortable.
Soul Core of CholotlNo listed limitMartial Weapon or Armour: Convert 40% of Requirements to Dexterity.Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeUse to fit an off-attribute item into a Dexterity-heavy setup. Compare the saved passive points or gear affixes with the value of the Augment socket.
Soul Core of ZantipiNo listed limitMartial Weapon or Armour: Convert 40% of Requirements to Intelligence.Trial of Chaos reward pool or tradeUse when Intelligence is abundant and the converted requirement makes a key off-attribute item practical. Skip it if normal gear already covers the requirement.

The safest base-core choices are the ones that solve a measured problem. Check character requirements, uncapped and maximum resistances, hit chance, Spirit reservation, and boss sustain before socketing. A visually large percentage is still wasted if the build cannot poison, bleed, ignite, freeze, shock, crit, or benefit from the specified item type.

All Level 50 Specialist and New 0.5.5 Soul Cores

Every core in this table requires level 50 and is Limited to 1 per character. These endgame Soul Cores are tied to the endgame Trial of Chaos, which requires an Inscribed Ultimatum of area level 65 or higher. The first 15 are specialist Soul Cores that existed before 0.5.5 but use their current live values. The next 13 Jiquani cores and four Atziri cores are the 17 additions from patch 0.5.5. The official patch notes name the new items but do not publish individual drop weights, so no room, boss, or percentage is presented here as a guaranteed farm.

Soul CoreExact 0.5.5 effectSourceRecommended equipment use
Hayoxi's Soul Core of HeatproofingHelmet: +40% of Armour also applies to Cold Damage.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse on a high-Armour character that needs another layer against Cold hits. Low-Armour builds receive little value because the effect scales from Armour.
Zalatl's Soul Core of InsulationBoots: +40% of Armour also applies to Lightning Damage.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeBest on Armour-stacking boots in a setup exposed to large Lightning hits. It supplements resistance and does not replace reaching the normal Lightning Resistance cap.
Topotante's Soul Core of DampeningGloves: +40% of Armour also applies to Fire Damage.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse for Fire-hit mitigation on a character with substantial Armour. Do not treat it as protection from Fire damage over time, because the wording applies Armour to Fire Damage rather than granting broad Fire immunity.
Atmohua's Soul Core of RetreatBody Armour: 40% increased Energy Shield from equipped Focus.
Focus: 30% increased Energy Shield from equipped Body Armour.
Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse only in a Focus plus Body Armour Energy Shield setup. Compare both socket locations: the better choice is the one that scales the stronger partner while sacrificing the less valuable competing Augment.
Quipolatl's Soul Core of FlowHelmet: 8% increased Skill Effect Duration and 8% increased Cooldown Recovery Rate.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeStrong for builds whose main skill benefits from both duration and cooldown recovery. If only one half applies, compare it with a more focused defensive or damage core.
Tzamoto's Soul Core of FerocityHelmet: +4 to Maximum Rage.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse on a Rage build that can generate and maintain the extra Rage. A larger maximum does nothing during encounters where the character never reaches it.
Uromoti's Soul Core of AttenuationBoots: 20% increased Curse Duration and 20% increased Poison Duration.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeBest when both long curses and poison uptime matter. Poison duration is not the same as Poison Magnitude; it improves total damage only when the build can maintain the relevant poisons long enough.
Opiloti's Soul Core of AssaultMartial Weapon, Wand, or Staff: 50% chance when you gain a Frenzy Charge to gain an additional Frenzy Charge.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse in a build with a repeatable Frenzy Charge generator. It accelerates charge gain but neither raises maximum charges nor creates charges without an initial gain event.
Guatelitzi's Soul Core of EnduranceMartial Weapon, Wand, or Staff: 50% chance when you gain an Endurance Charge to gain an additional Endurance Charge.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse when fast Endurance Charge ramp improves survival or powers another mechanic. Confirm the build already has a reliable way to gain the first charge.
Xopec's Soul Core of PowerMartial Weapon, Wand, or Staff: 50% chance when you gain a Power Charge to gain an additional Power Charge.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeChoose for Power Charge builds that value rapid ramp, especially after charges are spent. It does not increase the maximum or guarantee an extra charge on every gain.
Estazunti's Soul Core of ConvalescenceBoots: 15% increased speed of Recoup Effects.
Helmet: 10% of Damage taken Recouped as Life.
Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeThe helmet version establishes a source of Life Recoup and works broadly. The boot version is for a build that already has meaningful Recoup and wants the recovery delivered faster.
Tacati's Soul Core of AfflictionHelmet: Enemies you Curse have -5% to Chaos Resistance.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse on a Chaos damage build that consistently curses important targets. It contributes nothing against an enemy that is not cursed by you.
Cholotl's Soul Core of WarBow: Projectiles have 20% chance to Chain an additional time from terrain.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeA niche clear-speed option for bow projectile setups that deliberately use terrain chaining. It is unreliable in open arenas and is not a general additional Chain against enemies.
Citaqualotl's Soul Core of FoulnessMartial Weapon: Adds 19 to 29 Chaos Damage.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse on an attack weapon only when the build scales added Chaos damage. Compare the flat value with percentage Poison Magnitude, penetration, attack speed, or another Augment at the character's actual gear level.
Xipocado's Soul Core of DominionWand, Staff, or Sceptre: Minions deal 40% increased Damage with Command Skills.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse for a minion build whose meaningful damage comes from Command Skills. Ordinary autonomous minion attacks do not become Command damage merely because this core is equipped.
Jiquani's Soul Core of AutomationWeapon: +1 to Level of all Totem Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse when the main damage or utility setup carries the Totem tag. Check the skill panel after socketing because higher gem level can also change costs or requirements.
Jiquani's Soul Core of MaledictionWeapon: +1 to Level of all Curse Skills.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeBest for a curse-focused build that gains a meaningful magnitude, duration, or breakpoint from another level. It is usually weaker than direct damage on a build using one curse only as support.
Jiquani's Soul Core of TargetingWeapon: +1 to Level of all Mark Skills.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse when a Mark is central to boss damage or another marked-enemy interaction. Verify the Mark tag instead of assuming every single-target debuff qualifies.
Jiquani's Soul Core of RallyingWeapon: +1 to Level of all Warcry Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse in a Warcry-centered build after confirming the next gem level improves the effect you need. A support skill used rarely may not justify a weapon socket.
Jiquani's Soul Core of RadianceWeapon: +1 to Level of all Herald Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse when a Herald supplies significant damage or utility and the build can afford any changed reservation or cost. Compare the gain with Azcapa Spirit if reservation space is the actual constraint.
Jiquani's Soul Core of SeveringWeapon: +1 to Level of all Strike Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse on a weapon for a Strike build whose main skill gains enough damage from levels to beat attack speed, penetration, or ailment scaling.
Jiquani's Soul Core of RipplingWeapon: +1 to Level of all Nova Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse for a main Nova skill after checking its tags and level scaling. It can affect more than one qualifying skill, which matters in multi-Nova setups.
Jiquani's Soul Core of QuakingWeapon: +1 to Level of all Slam Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse in a Slam build when gem level scales the main attack enough to outperform a generic weapon core. The Slam tag, not the visual size of an attack, determines eligibility.
Jiquani's Soul Core of MunitionsWeapon: +1 to Level of all Grenade Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse on a Grenade weapon setup that gains damage or utility from skill levels. Recheck ammunition, Mana, and cooldown behavior after the level increase.
Jiquani's Soul Core of SnaresWeapon: +1 to Level of all Hazard Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeBest for builds using one or several Hazard-tagged skills as a main damage layer. Do not assume every ground effect is a Hazard without checking the skill tag.
Jiquani's Soul Core of AbundanceWeapon: +1 to Level of all Plant Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse on Plant-focused setups where gem levels improve the main skill package. It is particularly efficient only when multiple important skills share the Plant tag or one Plant skill carries the build.
Jiquani's Soul Core of SquallsWeapon: +1 to Level of all Wind Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse for a Wind-tagged main skill after comparing its next-level numbers with the competing socket modifier. Similar-looking projectiles without the Wind tag receive nothing.
Jiquani's Soul Core of ThunderingWeapon: +1 to Level of all Storm Skill Gems.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse when Storm-tagged skills provide core damage or utility. It is not a generic Lightning skill level modifier, so confirm the exact tag first.
Atziri's Soul Core of DevotionSocket-bound. Helmet: 1% increased Spirit for each Corrupted Item Equipped. Corrupting will always result in change.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse on a finished helmet in a deliberately Corrupted equipment set when the scaled Spirit reaches a useful reservation breakpoint. Do not commit it to temporary leveling gear.
Atziri's Soul Core of VitalitySocket-bound. Body Armour: 1% increased Maximum Life for each Corrupted Item Equipped. Corrupting will always result in change.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse on a finished Life-based body armour only after the wider gear set contains enough Corrupted items to justify the socket and the guaranteed corruption change risk.
Atziri's Soul Core of AlacritySocket-bound. Gloves: 1% increased Skill Speed for each Corrupted Item Equipped. Corrupting will always result in change.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse on final gloves for a Corrupted-gear build that benefits from broad Skill Speed. Measure the effect across the whole rotation rather than assuming it is identical to attack or cast speed in every interaction.
Atziri's Soul Core of InoculationSocket-bound. Boots: +2% to Chaos Resistance for each Corrupted Item Equipped. Corrupting will always result in change.Endgame Trial of Chaos (Area Level 65+) or tradeUse when a Corrupted equipment set needs a large amount of Chaos Resistance and the boots are permanent. Stop adding Corrupted items once the build's resistance and item-quality tradeoff no longer improves.

The Jiquani level cores reward exact tag matching, not broad archetype matching. Open the skill details and verify Totem, Curse, Mark, Warcry, Herald, Strike, Nova, Slam, Grenade, Hazard, Plant, Wind, or Storm before spending the core. The Atziri group asks a different question: whether enough of the final gear set will remain Corrupted to scale the per-item bonus. These are not efficient one-off Augments on an otherwise uncorrupted character.

Do not socket a high-value core merely because the base has one strong affix. If the item still needs random modifiers, establish a budget and compare a finished replacement first. Players who need extra crafting stock for that stage can use a specific PoE 2 Exalted Orb option, but the Soul Core should remain in the stash until the target item is genuinely worth finishing.

All Four Ancient Thesis Soul Cores

Ancient Thesis cores require level 60 and carry the Ancient Augment designation. Their Limit 1 is shared across all Ancient Augments on the character, so equipping a Thesis also conflicts with any other Ancient Augment. These cores do not belong to the ordinary Trial of Chaos Soul Core reward pool. A Core Destabiliser can double the input Soul Core, transform it into another random Soul Core of the same tier, transform it into one of the four Ancient Thesis cores, or destroy it. The effect depends on the equipment slot, so an Ancient core should be chosen for a defined build interaction before it touches an item.

Ancient Soul CoreExact 0.5.5 effectsSourceRecommended equipment use
Guatelitzi's ThesisHelmet: Gain Armour equal to 35% of Life Lost from Hits in the past 8 seconds.
Body Armour: 10% of Physical Damage prevented Recouped as Life.
Boots: Lose 5% of maximum Life per second while Sprinting, 25% increased Movement Speed while Sprinting.
Possible Core Destabiliser outcome or tradeHelmet and body armour suit durable Armour setups that can use reactive mitigation or Recoup. Boots are a specialized speed choice only for a character that can safely offset the continuous Life loss.
Citaqualotl's ThesisBody Armour: You Recoup 50% of Damage taken by your Offerings as Life.
Gloves: One of your Persistent Minions revives when an Offering expires.
Boots: Sacrifice 10% of maximum Life to gain that much Guard when you Dodge Roll.
Possible Core Destabiliser outcome or tradeBody armour and gloves belong to Offering or Persistent Minion builds. The boot effect is a deliberate Guard engine with a Life payment, so it needs recovery and safe Life thresholds rather than casual use.
Jiquani's ThesisHelmet: +1 to maximum Mana per 3 Item Armour on Equipped Helmet.
Gloves: Energy Shield Recharge starts after spending a total of 2000 Mana, no more than once every 2 seconds.
Boots: Increases and Reductions to Movement Speed also apply to Energy Shield Recharge Rate.
Possible Core Destabiliser outcome or tradeHelmet is for Armour-based Mana stacking and should be calculated from the helmet's actual Item Armour. Gloves suit a high-spending Mana and Energy Shield loop. Boots reward builds that already invest heavily in Movement Speed and recharge.
Quipolatl's ThesisHelmet: A random Skill that requires Glory generates 50% of its maximum Glory when your Marks Activate.
Gloves: Your Energy Shield Recharge starts when your Minions are Reformed.
Body Armour: +75% of Armour also applies to Chaos Damage while on full Energy Shield.
Possible Core Destabiliser outcome or tradeHelmet supports a Mark plus Glory skill loop. Gloves are for Minion Reformation with Energy Shield. Body armour is a hybrid Armour and Energy Shield defense that works only while Energy Shield is full, so uptime is the deciding factor.

Do not gamble a core that your current build already needs unless losing it is acceptable. A Core Destabiliser is not a deterministic upgrade recipe, and Grinding Gear Games has not published the probability of destruction or the chance to reach a particular Thesis. The Fate of the Vaal endgame guide explains how to plan Vaal item interactions around a target instead of bringing irreplaceable gear into an unknown craft.

How to Farm Soul Cores in Trial of Chaos

Trial of Chaos is the primary farm for regular Soul Cores, while level 50 endgame Soul Cores require an endgame Trial entered with an area level 65+ Inscribed Ultimatum. In 0.5.5, every completed room has a reward chest, and a completed run awards only Currency and Soul Cores instead of mixing Corrupted equipment into that final outcome. Area level adds inherent bonuses such as more Magic or Rare monsters, larger relevant packs, more Rare monster modifiers, improved boss item quantity and quality, and access to Exceptional items. Difficulty modifiers selected between rooms now also increase the quality of drops from slain monsters.

Reliable farming route

Use an Inscribed Ultimatum your build can finish consistently, clear each room, open its chest, and evaluate the next modifier against both survival and reward quality. A dead run can still leave earlier room chests collected, so the correct strategy is not automatically to choose the hardest modifier. On a 10-Trial Inscribed Ultimatum, a successful completion can continue immediately twice without supplying another Ultimatum, carrying modifiers and reward quality forward while offering different Trialmaster Fragments on subsequent successes.

  1. Prepare defenses first: cap normal resistances, solve recovery, and avoid an Ultimatum whose area level exceeds the build's reliable damage and survival.
  2. Choose compatible modifiers: reject combinations that disable the build's recovery, movement, ailment plan, or damage delivery even when their reward quality looks attractive.
  3. Open every room chest: patch 0.5.5 spreads rewards through the run, reducing the cost of a later failure.
  4. Continue only with a stable build: the second and third sequences retain accumulated difficulty. A completed first sequence is better than a failed continuation chosen without a survival margin.
  5. Price named cores before using them: a sought-after level 50 core may fund a finished item that improves the character more than the socketed effect.

The official 0.5.5 Trial of Chaos announcement confirms that endgame Trials can extend to 30 rooms with rising difficulty and rewards. It does not assign a named Soul Core to a specific room or publish per-core odds. Guides claiming an exact percentage without a developer source are reporting a sample or guess, not a guaranteed rate.

Trade league and Solo Self-Found priorities

In trade leagues, search the exact core name and compare its price with the completed equipment upgrade. Buying a common resistance or requirement core may be more efficient than running Trials for one name, while selling a specialized core can finance several broader upgrades. In Solo Self-Found, keep one copy of every unfamiliar core, separate Limited to 1 options from stackable ones, and delay Ancient gambles until duplicates exist.

For either ruleset, the fastest practical filter is build relevance. Keep tag-level cores matching present or planned skills, Atziri cores only if a Corrupted equipment plan exists, and resistance or requirement cores that solve an immediate gearing constraint. Vendor space is cheaper than destroying a rare option and needing it later.

How to Choose the Best Soul Core for an Item

The best Soul Core is the one that fixes the character's current limiting stat or multiplies a mechanic already present in the build. Start from the item and build, not from the rarity of the core. A common +6% all Elemental Resistances core can be the correct choice on a nearly finished defensive piece, while an Ancient effect can be useless without its exact trigger and defensive layers.

  1. Confirm the item will stay: finish the base, affixes, quality, and normal crafting plan before using a valuable or Socket-bound core.
  2. Read the equipment restriction: Weapon, Martial Weapon, Bow, Wand, Staff, Sceptre, Focus, Armour, and named armour slots are not interchangeable.
  3. Verify the build trigger: on-kill recovery needs kills, charge cores need a source of charge gain, tag cores need the exact skill tag, and Atziri cores need Corrupted items equipped.
  4. Compare the alternative socket: calculate whether damage, resistance, maximum resistance, Spirit, sustain, requirement conversion, or a special interaction removes the larger bottleneck.
  5. Test the full loadout: check both weapon sets, requirements, reservation, resistances, recovery, and the skill panel after the core is active.

Players who need a complete gear and skill plan rather than one isolated socket choice can use a Path of Exile 2 build setup as the relevant service. The useful outcome is a coherent character where the core supports the skills, passive tree, and defenses, not an expensive Augment placed into an unrelated item.

Common Soul Core Mistakes

Most expensive errors happen before the socket click. They come from using an old value, reading one slot effect while socketing another item type, assuming an effect creates a mechanic it only scales, or committing a Socket-bound core before the rest of the equipment is finished.

  • Using pre-0.5.5 values: current examples include 40% requirement conversion, 60% Freeze Buildup, 5% maximum Life, and the reworked Atmohua's Soul Core of Retreat.
  • Confusing magnitude with chance: Tacati, Opiloti, Puhuarte, and Xopec improve an ailment after the build can inflict it; they do not automatically create the ailment chance.
  • Ignoring Limit 1: Limited to 1 is a character-wide equipment limit, not merely a per-item socket rule. Ancient Augments share one common character-wide Ancient Augment limit.
  • Treating on-kill recovery as boss sustain: Jiquani and Zalatl weapon effects need kills and may stop working during isolated bosses.
  • Misreading tag cores: elemental appearance does not prove Storm, an area skill is not automatically Nova, and a ground effect is not automatically Hazard.
  • Expecting safe removal: Orb of Extraction destroys the equipment to return non-Socket-bound Augments. Socket-bound Atziri cores cannot be removed, replaced, or extracted by any means.
  • Assuming an exact drop rate: the developer has not published individual weights for the 52-core pool.

A final screenshot of the item, the intended core, and the character sheet before socketing is a simple safeguard. It makes the slot restriction, limit, requirements, resistances, and planned breakpoint visible at the same time.

Path of Exile 2 Soul Cores FAQ

These answers address the practical questions that remain after comparing the tables: total count, source, removability, limits, stacking, and the relationship between the new Jiquani and Atziri families.

How many Soul Cores are in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5?
There are 52 current Soul Core entries in the 0.5.5 data: 16 base cores, 32 level 50 specialist cores, and four level 60 Ancient Thesis cores. Seventeen of the level 50 entries were added in 0.5.5.

Where do Soul Cores drop?
Regular Soul Cores are mainly acquired from Trial of Chaos rewards. Level 50 endgame Soul Cores are exclusive to endgame Trials entered with an area level 65+ Inscribed Ultimatum. In trade-enabled leagues, both groups can also be acquired from other players. Ancient Thesis cores are possible Core Destabiliser outcomes or trade acquisitions. No exact individual drop rates have been published.

Can a Soul Core be removed without destroying the item?
A normal socketed Soul Core can be replaced by another Augment, but the old core is destroyed. To recover non-Socket-bound Augments, an Orb of Extraction destroys the equipment and returns them. Atziri's four new cores are Socket-bound, so once socketed they cannot be removed, replaced, or extracted by any means.

What does Limited to 1 mean for a Soul Core?
It is a character-wide equipment limit: do not equip more than one copy of that Limited Augment across your character's items. Ancient Augments go further and share one common Limit 1 across the whole Ancient Augment category. Follow the current item text even if an old legacy item was created before the restriction existed.

Do the new Jiquani Soul Cores increase every similar skill?
No. Each one checks a named gem tag such as Totem, Curse, Mark, Warcry, Herald, Strike, Nova, Slam, Grenade, Hazard, Plant, Wind, or Storm. The skill must carry that exact tag.

How do Atziri's Soul Cores scale?
Each grants its listed bonus for every Corrupted item equipped. Devotion scales Spirit on a helmet, Vitality scales maximum Life on body armour, Alacrity scales Skill Speed on gloves, and Inoculation scales Chaos Resistance on boots. All four are Limited to 1 and Socket-bound.

Is there one best Soul Core for every build?
No. Damage cores require matching skills and scaling, defensive cores depend on the character's Armour, Energy Shield, resistances, or recovery, and utility cores must cross a real requirement or reservation breakpoint. Compare the effect on the complete loadout.

Conclusion

Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.5 has 52 Soul Cores with sharply different jobs. Farm regular cores through Trial of Chaos and level 50 endgame cores through area level 65+ endgame Trials, use trade when targeting one name is more efficient, and treat the four Ancient Thesis cores as uncertain Core Destabiliser outcomes. The correct socket starts with the exact equipment restriction and current item text, then checks whether the build can activate and scale the modifier.

Before committing a core, finish the item, verify any character-wide Limit 1 and Ancient Augment conflict, compare the competing Augment, and test the expected breakpoint in the full loadout. Be especially cautious with Atziri's Socket-bound cores and any Ancient gamble. A common core that fixes resistance, Spirit, requirements, or sustain is a better upgrade than a rare core whose trigger never works for the character.
