How to Unlock Ranked in Valorant: Level 20 & Placements

How to Unlock Ranked in Valorant: Level 20 & Placements

To unlock Ranked in VALORANT, your account must reach Account Level 20. You no longer need to win 10 Unrated matches — Riot removed that old requirement. Once Competitive is unlocked, a new Ranked player must complete five placement matches before receiving a visible rank.

Account Level is increased with Account Points (AP), not Battlepass XP. You earn AP by completing matchmade games, with additional AP from wins and your first win of the day.

What Level Do You Need for Ranked in Valorant?

You need to reach Account Level 20 before Competitive becomes available.

This requirement has applied since Episode 4 Act 1. Riot introduced it to make players spend enough time in normal matchmaking to learn VALORANT's core mechanics before entering Ranked.

There is one legacy exception: accounts that had already played at least one Competitive match before the Level 20 requirement was introduced retained access even if their Account Level was below 20.

Do You Still Need 10 Unrated Wins to Unlock Ranked?

No. This is one of the most common outdated answers still appearing in old VALORANT guides.

Before Episode 4, Competitive required wins in Unrated. Riot replaced that system with the Account Level requirement.

Today, winning exactly 10 Unrated games does not unlock Ranked if your account is still below Level 20.

What Is Account Level in Valorant?

Account Level measures how much you have played VALORANT across matchmade game modes.

Your level is displayed on your Player Card and increases through Account Points (AP).

Every account level requires 5,000 AP.

A fresh Level 1 account therefore needs 19 additional levels to reach Level 20, which equals 95,000 AP in total.

AP vs XP: What Actually Levels Your Account?

AP and XP are different progression systems.

CurrencyMain purposeUnlocks Competitive?
AP — Account PointsRaises Account LevelYes, indirectly by reaching Level 20
XPBattlepass, events and other progression systemsNo
RRCompetitive rank progression after you are placedNo — it only exists after entering Ranked

This distinction matters because grinding missions for XP does not directly raise your Account Level. You need AP, which Riot awards for time spent in matchmade games and for winning.

How Do You Earn Account Points?

Riot awards AP for completing matchmade games.

The current Account Leveling system considers:

  • time spent playing matchmade games;
  • winning matches;
  • a bonus for your first win of the day.

Competitive is obviously unavailable before Level 20, but other matchmade modes can contribute toward Account Level progression.

Queue time and sitting in menus do not help. You need actual match participation.

What Is the Fastest Legitimate Way to Reach Level 20?

There is no official Riot number for exactly how many hours Level 20 should take, so any page promising an exact universal time is estimating.

The efficient approach is:

  1. Play consistently instead of relying on one huge session. The first-win bonus rewards returning regularly.
  2. Complete matchmade games. AP is tied to actual match participation.
  3. Try to secure the first win of the day. Riot awards bonus AP for it.
  4. Avoid AFK behavior and penalties. They do not help progression and can create additional restrictions.
  5. Use the grind to learn Ranked fundamentals. Learn maps, two or three Agents, economy and basic gunplay before placements.

The objective should not be simply reaching Level 20 as fast as mathematically possible. Five strong placement matches are more valuable than reaching Competitive quickly while still being unfamiliar with the game.

Which Modes Should You Play Before Level 20?

Because Account Level is based on playing matchmade games, you can use several modes while learning different skills.

ModeBest use before Ranked
UnratedLearning full Competitive-style economy, map flow and round structure
SwiftplayPracticing Agents and maps in shorter matches
DeathmatchCrosshair placement, movement and gunfights
Team DeathmatchRepeated combat and ability usage
Other matchmade modesAdditional playtime and mechanical familiarity

If your actual objective is preparing for Competitive rather than only maximizing AP efficiency, Unrated is especially useful because its round structure, economy and objective play are closest to Ranked.

What Should You Learn Before Playing Ranked?

Level 20 is only the technical requirement. Before your first placements, you should also understand:

  • basic attacking and defending objectives;
  • when to buy, force, eco and save;
  • common callouts on the active maps;
  • how planting and defusing the Spike works;
  • how to trade teammates;
  • at least one Agent you can play confidently;
  • one backup Agent if your main is taken;
  • basic communication.

You can use our complete VALORANT Agents list to understand every role and choose a small Agent pool.

How Many Placement Matches Do New Valorant Players Need?

A player receiving their first Competitive rank completes five placement matches.

These matches allow the Ranked system to establish your visible starting point before normal RR progression begins.

Your placement is not simply determined by whether you go 5–0 or by your K/D/A. Riot does not publish the complete placement formula, so claims such as “five wins guarantee Diamond” are not reliable.

What Is the Highest Rank You Can Get From Placements?

The current maximum placement rank is Ascendant 3.

Riot raised the cap from Ascendant 1 to Ascendant 3 in Patch 11.00 in June 2025.

Some older Riot Support pages still contain the previous Ascendant 1 wording, but the later official Patch 11.00 notes explicitly changed the maximum to Ascendant 3.

You therefore cannot place directly into Immortal or Radiant. Those ranks must be reached through normal Competitive progression.

What Happens After Your Five Placements?

Once your rank is established, Riot currently places you at 50 RR within that rank.

From Iron through Ascendant:

  • wins normally increase RR;
  • losses decrease RR;
  • reaching 100 RR promotes you;
  • your hidden MMR affects how quickly your visible rank converges toward Riot's skill estimate.

Our VALORANT MMR vs RR guide explains why different players receive different RR gains after the same match.

How Many Placement Matches Are Required Every Act?

The answer depends on where VALORANT is in its six-Act Season.

ActReturning player's placements
Act 1 — Season start5
Act 21
Act 31
Act 4 — Mid-Season5
Act 51
Act 61

This schedule applies to returning players who have already completed their initial Competitive placement process.

A brand-new Ranked player still needs the initial five matches before receiving their first visible rank.

Do Placement Matches Reset Your Skill Completely?

No placement system should be treated as a completely blank five-game test.

VALORANT uses hidden matchmaking information alongside visible Competitive progression, while Riot keeps the exact placement formula private.

This is why one unusually good or bad placement game does not define your entire long-term rank.

Should You Solo Queue Your Placements?

You can, but there is no special RR bonus for doing placements solo.

A reliable duo can make communication, trading and utility coordination more consistent. The important part is choosing someone near your own skill level who does not change how you normally play.

Do not treat placements as five matches that require risky strategies. Consistent decision-making is more useful than trying to force a highlight performance.

Can You Play Placements With Friends?

Yes, but Competitive party restrictions still apply once the system can determine the appropriate skill range for the party.

Full five-player parties have more flexible rank disparity rules, although large differences can reduce RR after players are ranked.

Four-player Competitive parties are not allowed.

Why Is Ranked Still Locked at Level 20?

If your account has reached Level 20 but Competitive still appears unavailable, check these basics:

  • restart the VALORANT client after reaching Level 20;
  • confirm the account really shows Account Level 20, not Battlepass level 20;
  • check whether the account has an active Competitive restriction or penalty;
  • make sure Riot services are functioning normally;
  • if a security or verification requirement is displayed in the client, complete the requested account verification.

The most common misunderstanding is confusing Account Level with Battlepass or event progression.

Does Account Level Reset Every Act?

No. Your Account Level continues increasing independently of your Competitive rank and does not reset when an Act changes.

Once you have reached Level 20, you do not need to level the account to 20 again every Season.

Does Buying the Battlepass Unlock Ranked Faster?

No.

The Premium Battlepass does not remove the Account Level 20 requirement.

Battlepass XP and Account Points are separate systems, so buying Battlepass levels does not directly increase your Account Level.

Can You Buy a Level 20 Account Instead?

Using purchased, borrowed or shared accounts is not a legitimate shortcut. Riot's competitive-integrity rules prohibit account sharing and account buying.

The safest route is to level and use your own Riot Account. The Level 1–20 period also gives you the map and Agent experience needed for your first placements.

What Should You Do Right Before Your First Placements?

Use this checklist:

  • choose one main Agent and one backup;
  • check the current Competitive map pool;
  • know the basic economy;
  • warm up your crosshair placement and movement;
  • avoid first-timing a new Agent;
  • use voice or pings for useful information;
  • do not panic over one placement loss.

Final Answer

To play Ranked in VALORANT, reach Account Level 20 through normal matchmade play. You do not need 10 Unrated wins. Once Competitive unlocks, complete five initial placement matches to receive your first rank.

Do not rush the first 20 levels only for access. Use them to learn the active maps, economy, gunplay and a small Agent pool. Those fundamentals matter far more to your eventual rank than trying to optimize a few hours off the unlock process.
