Cursed Fishing is a new outdoor activity in World of Warcraft: Midnight Patch 12.1, Curse of Ula’tek. It takes place in the Coiled Isle and is unlocked by defeating Curse Surge rare elites and progressing through Captain Tokka’s local story. Each defeated rare opens a fishing location, while reputation with Captain Tokka’s crew grants access to additional cursed waters across the island.

What Is Cursed Fishing in Midnight?

Cursed Fishing is a location-based fishing activity tied to the Coiled Isle’s outdoor progression. Unlike ordinary fishing, access to the cursed waters is earned through exploration and combat rather than being available immediately when you enter the zone.

The activity is connected to two progression paths:

  • Curse Surges: Defeat the rare elite that appears at a rotating location to unlock Cursed Fishing there.
  • Captain Tokka’s local story: Complete the story involving the tortollan sea captain and build reputation with his crew to open more fishing locations.

Cursed Fishing is therefore not a separate profession from Midnight Fishing. It is an outdoor activity layered onto the normal fishing system and tied to Coiled Isle exploration.

How to Unlock Cursed Fishing

You unlock Cursed Fishing by completing the introductory content for the Coiled Isle and then opening individual fishing locations through Curse Surges or Captain Tokka’s reputation progression.

  1. Reach the Coiled Isle. The island is the new outdoor zone introduced with Curse of Ula’tek, located off the eastern coast of Zul’Aman.
  2. Follow the Coiled Isle story. The zone’s campaign introduces its major activities, characters and progression systems.
  3. Find an active Curse Surge. Curse Surges rotate between five locations on the island.
  4. Defeat the spawned rare elite. Killing the rare elite unlocks Cursed Fishing at that specific location.
  5. Complete Captain Tokka’s local story. Tokka and his crew provide another route into the fishing system.
  6. Gain reputation with Captain Tokka’s crew. Reputation unlocks additional cursed waters beyond the locations opened through rare enemies.

There is no single fishing trainer quest that unlocks every location at once. Cursed Fishing access is distributed across Coiled Isle activities, so players should expect to combine rare hunting with local-story progression.

Where Are the Cursed Fishing Locations?

Cursed Fishing locations are found throughout the Coiled Isle rather than in one central fishing area. The first locations are connected to the island’s Curse Surges. These surges rotate between five locations, and the rare elite at each active site must be defeated before fishing there becomes available.

The exact map positions and final names of every fishing location should be checked again when Patch 12.1 launches. The current feature structure confirms the five-location Curse Surge rotation, but location details and map markers may still change before the live release.

Curse Surge Fishing Locations

Curse Surges regularly activate one of five rotating locations on the Coiled Isle. When a surge is active, the area contains a rare elite. Defeating that enemy is the key requirement for opening the associated fishing spot.

If a location is not available, check the other Curse Surge areas rather than repeatedly searching the same shoreline. The activity is designed around rotating rare spawns, so not every fishing location is expected to be active at the same time.

Captain Tokka’s Additional Fishing Waters

Captain Tokka provides a second progression route. After finding and helping the tortollan sea captain through his local story, you can gain reputation with his crew. That reputation expands the number of cursed waters available around the island.

This distinction is important: defeating rare elites opens individual locations, while Tokka’s reputation provides broader access to more fishing areas. Players who want to explore the entire Cursed Fishing system should use both progression paths.

What Do You Need Before Fishing?

You need the normal requirements for Midnight Fishing, including the Fishing profession and suitable fishing equipment. Cursed Fishing does not replace the standard Midnight Fishing skill system.

  • Learn Midnight Fishing from the appropriate fishing trainer if you have not already done so.
  • Bring a fishing rod and keep your fishing equipment available in your bags or equipment setup.
  • Use fishing lures or other profession consumables when their effect matches your goal.
  • Carry combat equipment because Coiled Isle fishing locations are connected to hostile creatures and outdoor events.
  • Complete enough Coiled Isle progression to access the relevant shoreline or fishing area.

The current Midnight fishing system supports fishing in open water and fishing pools, as well as rare treasure-related fishing opportunities. Cursed Fishing should be treated as a zone activity within that broader profession system rather than as an independent skill.

What Rewards Does Cursed Fishing Provide?

Cursed Fishing provides fishing-related rewards and contributes to the broader Coiled Isle progression connected to Captain Tokka. The activity is intended for players who want to combine profession gameplay with outdoor exploration, rare hunting and reputation progression.

The confirmed reward categories include:

  • Fishing catches: Items obtained directly from the cursed waters.
  • Fishing treasure: Fishing-related treasure opportunities associated with the Midnight fishing system.
  • Captain Tokka reputation: Progress toward reputation rewards from Tokka’s crew.
  • Additional fishing access: Reputation unlocks more cursed waters across the Coiled Isle.
  • Outdoor progression: Participation supports exploration of the island’s wider activity network.

Exact fish names, treasure contents, cosmetic rewards, drop rates and reputation thresholds should not be treated as final until the live Patch 12.1 item and quest data is confirmed. Fishing rewards can also be random, so no rare catch or cosmetic should be considered guaranteed from a specific number of casts.

How Captain Tokka’s Reputation Affects Cursed Fishing

Captain Tokka’s crew is the reputation faction most closely associated with Cursed Fishing. The local story introduces Tokka and explains why the crew is operating around the cursed waters of the Coiled Isle.

Reputation has two practical purposes:

  1. It advances Tokka’s reward track. Reputation rewards are separate from the items caught while fishing.
  2. It expands fishing access. Higher progression with the crew unlocks additional cursed waters around the island.

Do not confuse Tokka reputation with a fishing skill level. Fishing skill affects the general profession, while Tokka reputation controls access to parts of the Cursed Fishing activity and its associated rewards.

Cursed Fishing and Curse Surges: What Is the Difference?

Curse Surges and Cursed Fishing are related but separate activities.

FeaturePrimary activityHow it connects to Cursed Fishing
Curse SurgesLocate and defeat a rotating rare eliteUnlocks fishing at the defeated rare’s location
Cursed FishingFish in a newly opened cursed areaProvides catches, fishing rewards and progression opportunities
Captain TokkaComplete a local story and gain reputationUnlocks more fishing areas around the island

A practical session may therefore look like this: travel to an active Curse Surge, defeat the rare elite, fish at the newly opened location, then continue Tokka’s quests and reputation progression to unlock further waters.

Does Cursed Fishing Require a Group?

Cursed Fishing itself is an outdoor fishing activity and does not appear to require a permanent party. However, the unlock route can involve defeating rare elites during Curse Surges, and group participation may make those encounters easier or faster.

The Coiled Isle also contains group content in the Vaults of Atal’Utek, public events and other activities. These systems are part of the same zone ecosystem, but they should not be confused with a direct requirement for every cast of Cursed Fishing.

A practical starting order is to unlock the island first, then combine combat and fishing rather than treating them as unrelated grinds.

  1. Finish the initial Coiled Isle access quests. This establishes access to the zone and its central activities.
  2. Check the active Curse Surge locations. Defeat the rare elite at any available location to open another fishing spot.
  3. Begin Captain Tokka’s local story. This introduces the reputation path and additional cursed waters.
  4. Fish whenever a location becomes available. This lets you make progress while waiting for another Curse Surge rotation.
  5. Continue Tokka reputation progression. Additional access is tied to the crew’s reputation track.
  6. Return to the island for rotating activities. Curse Surges and other zone content provide reasons to revisit the Coiled Isle.

This order avoids a common mistake: waiting for a particular fishing location without first checking whether its associated rare elite or reputation requirement has been completed.

Common Cursed Fishing Mistakes

  • Looking for all fishing spots immediately: Individual locations are unlocked through Curse Surges and Tokka progression.
  • Ignoring rare elites: Defeating the rare at an active Curse Surge is the direct way to open fishing in that area.
  • Treating reputation as Fishing skill: Tokka reputation unlocks access and rewards; it does not replace the profession skill.
  • Expecting guaranteed rare loot: Fishing rewards can include random catches and treasure, so exact results are not guaranteed.
  • Fishing without combat preparation: The Coiled Isle contains hostile creatures and outdoor events around its waters.
  • Confusing Cursed Fishing with ordinary Midnight Fishing: Standard fishing remains available throughout Midnight, while Cursed Fishing is tied specifically to Coiled Isle unlocks.

Is Cursed Fishing Available at Patch 12.1 Launch?

Cursed Fishing is part of the Curse of Ula’tek content update and is designed for the Coiled Isle. The activity is associated with the zone’s launch content, while Midnight Season 2 begins one week after the Patch 12.1 content update according to Blizzard’s announcement.

Patch 12.1 is still in pre-release testing as of July 17, 2026. The feature’s core unlock structure is documented, but final reward tables, exact fishing-location names, reputation thresholds and item quantities require live verification after release.
