Class Tuning on April 7th in WoW Midnight

Blizzard is making another round of class tuning in WoW Midnight on April 7, with changes aimed at three specific areas. The April 7 pass raises several underperforming PvE specs, adjusts survivability for most tanks, and trims some of the most obvious PvP burst outliers while giving weaker specs more room to compete.
This is a targeted tuning update, not a full redesign patch. The official notes focus on immediate performance gaps in raid, Mythic+, tank durability, and PvP pressure. Blizzard also says the next tuning pass will focus on Hero Talent diversity, which gives this update a clear place in the larger class balance roadmap.
Blizzard's Goal for the April 7 Tuning Pass
Blizzard's official explanation is straightforward. In PvE, the goal is to increase underperforming specs in both raid and Mythic+ dungeons. For tanks, the goal is to improve survivability and help bridge the gap between tank performance. In PvP, Blizzard says it is continuing to buff weaker specs, monitor healer balance, and reduce burst damage from specs that can secure kills in short windows.
That structure explains why the patch touches a wide range of classes without trying to reset the entire meta. Some specs get direct damage increases, several tanks receive durability tools or targeted damage help, and a number of PvP builds lose part of their burst in exchange for stronger sustained pressure or a healthier damage profile.
The Biggest PvE Buffs in the April 7 Midnight Tuning Pass
Several DPS specs receive focused PvE buffs in this pass. Frost Death Knight gets one of the clearest single-target packages, with Obliterate increased by 12% and both Frost Strike and Frostbane increased by 15%, all outside PvP. Blizzard says Frost was behind expectations in single-target damage, and these changes directly address that weakness.
- Balance Druid receives a smaller but still meaningful package. Starfall is increased by 16% and Ascendant Eclipses' Lunar Bolt is increased by 10%, both outside PvP. That gives Balance more damage in situations where Starfall matters while also improving Lunar-based output.
- Devastation Evoker gets a targeted Flameshaper adjustment. Consume Flame now detonates 150% of Fire Breath damage through Disintegrate instead of 115%, outside PvP. Blizzard's note is clear here: Flameshaper has been behind Scalecommander in single-target performance, and this change is meant to narrow that gap.
- Enhancement Shaman receives one of the broader PvE buff packages in the post. Lightning Bolt rises by 8%, Chain Lightning by 25%, Crash Lightning's initial hit by 20%, Crash Lightning's weapon enhancement effect by 10%, and Stormstrike plus Windstrike by 15%, all outside PvP. Blizzard says the goal is to improve damage outside burst windows and bring Stormbringer closer to Totemic.
- Rogue gets split PvE treatment by spec. Assassination gains support through buffs to Caustic Spatter, Garrote, Rupture, Fan of Knives, and Crimson Tempest. Outlaw receives a 4% increase to all damage, while some Blade Flurry spread is reduced through baseline and hero talent interactions. Windwalker Monk also gets extra cleave support, with Fists of Fury off-target damage increased to 60% from 50%, outside PvP.
| Spec | Main PvE Change | Direction | Blizzard's Stated Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frost Death Knight | Obliterate +12%, Frost Strike and Frostbane +15% | Buff | Single-target damage was behind expectations |
| Balance Druid | Starfall +16%, Lunar Bolt +10% | Buff | Direct output increase in PvE |
| Devastation Evoker | Flameshaper Consume Flame detonation increased to 150% | Buff | Flameshaper was behind Scalecommander in single target |
| Enhancement Shaman | Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Crash Lightning, Stormstrike, and Windstrike buffs | Buff | Improve sustained damage and narrow the gap with Totemic |
| Assassination Rogue | Bleed and AoE support buffs | Buff | Increase PvE output |
| Outlaw Rogue | 4% overall damage increase, reduced Blade Flurry spread in some interactions | Mixed | Increase output while adjusting cleave interactions |
| Windwalker Monk | Fists of Fury off-target damage increased to 60% | Buff | More cleave value in PvE |
Tank Changes Focus on Survivability and Targeted Damage Help

The tank section is one of the most important parts of the April 7 tuning pass because Blizzard is explicitly trying to close performance gaps between tank specs. Most tanks receive survivability help, but not every spec moves in exactly the same direction.
- Blood Death Knight gets a clear package for both durability and damage. Auto-attack damage rises by 25%, Death Strike damage by 12%, Blood Fortification armor increases to 45% from 35%, and Bone Shield now grants armor equal to 180% of Strength instead of 150%. Guardian Druid also gets stronger mitigation through buffs to Scintillating Moonlight and Rend and Tear.
- Protection Paladin receives the largest tank-focused section in the official post. Blizzard says Prot Paladins have been struggling with magic damage and periodic damage in Mythic+, so the April 7 pass improves survivability and control through more mitigation, better armor scaling, and stronger self-healing against damage-over-time effects. The list includes stronger auto-attacks, more Judgment and Shield of the Righteous damage through Glory of the Vanguard, a stronger Greater Judgment follow-up, higher magical mitigation from Imbued Shield, more armor from Redoubt, and a larger healing multiplier from Light of the Titans against harmful periodic effects.
- Vengeance Demon Hunter gets a more offensive kind of PvE help. Blizzard says its single-target damage has remained below expectations, so the pass increases auto-attack damage, Focused Cleave's primary target bonus, and Soul Carver damage. That gives Vengeance more value in situations where cleave is not carrying the spec.
- Brewmaster Monk is the one tank that takes a step back in this round. Blizzard says Brewmasters gained a significant amount of self-healing going into Midnight, enough that their total defensive package became too strong. Vital Flame healing is reduced from 50% to 40%, and Shado-Pan's Predictive Training damage reduction drops from 10% to 8%.
Holy Paladin and Protection Paladin Move in Different Directions
Paladin stands out in this patch because Blizzard is solving different problems for different roles. Holy Paladin receives help because its healing output is behind expectations. Blizzard says it wants to reinforce the holy power spender loop, so Word of Glory and Light of Dawn both gain 20% healing, with the Word of Glory buff also applying to Eternal Flame and its periodic effect.
Protection Paladin moves in the opposite direction depending on game mode. In PvE, the spec gets substantial help aimed at survival, especially against magic damage and periodic effects in Mythic+. In PvP, Blizzard continues to cut parts of its power profile, reducing all healing done by 10% and lowering Glory of the Vanguard damage by 25% in PvP combat.
PvP Changes Cut Burst and Raise Baseline Pressure
The PvP side of the April 7 tuning update follows a consistent pattern. Blizzard is reducing damage concentrated into short kill windows while lifting weaker specs or smoothing out specs that rely too heavily on burst.
- Devourer Demon Hunter gets one of the clearest redistribution packages in the patch. Blizzard says survivability was lower than desired, so mitigation goes up through Illidari Knowledge and Armor of Souls. At the same time, burst from both hero talent trees is reduced through cuts to Voidsurge, Voidfall Meteor, and Otherworldly Focus, while overall damage is increased by 8%. The result is less front-loaded spike and more stable damage.
- Windwalker Monk also loses some PvP pressure at the top end. Blizzard reduces overall damage by 3%, cuts Glory of the Dawn damage by 50%, and lowers Weapon of Wind's Zenith bonus. Beast Mastery Hunter takes a straight 5% damage nerf in PvP, while Protection Paladin loses more healing and burst value again.
- Rogue sees the biggest split by spec. Assassination gets a 180% increase to Mutilate in PvP because Blizzard says the ability had fallen behind its expected contribution and needed to do more for the spec's steady damage. Outlaw gets an 8% increase to all ability damage in PvP, but Menacing Rush during Adrenaline Rush drops to 10% from 20%, shifting power away from a sharper burst window. Subtlety takes a nerf through Trickster's Flawless Form, which now grants 2% finishing move damage per stack instead of 4%.
Other specs also receive meaningful PvP changes. Restoration Shaman gets a 20% Healing Wave increase in PvP. Affliction Warlock gains 12% overall PvP damage plus a 15% increase to Unstable Affliction. Arms Warrior gets 3% more overall damage, 15% more Rend damage, and a 100% increase to Deep Wounds, but Blizzard also reduces Demolish damage by 15% and cuts Celeritous Conclusion's critical strike follow-up on Mortal Strike from 100% to 15%.
What the April 7 Midnight Tuning Pass Changes
The April 7 tuning pass gives a clearer picture of Blizzard's early Midnight balance priorities. Several PvE specs still need direct numbers help in raid and Mythic+, tanks are still being adjusted to reduce survivability gaps, and PvP continues to move away from damage concentrated into very short kill windows.
Blizzard also says the next tuning pass will focus on Hero Talent diversity. That matters because some of the class notes in this update already point to internal build gaps, including Flameshaper compared to Scalecommander and Stormbringer compared to Totemic. The April 7 pass improves immediate performance, while the next wave is expected to address more of the talent-path imbalance inside specs.
Final Thoughts
Upcoming Class Tuning on April 7 in WoW Midnight is a focused balance pass built around immediate class and spec performance. Blizzard is lifting weak PvE specs, tightening tank survivability, and reducing some of the most obvious burst outliers in PvP while giving several weaker specs better baseline pressure. It is not a full class overhaul, but it should matter in raid, Mythic+, and arena as soon as the changes go live.
The biggest immediate winners on the PvE side are Frost Death Knight, Enhancement Shaman, Devastation Evoker, Holy Paladin, and several tanks that were either too fragile or too uneven in key damage profiles. On the PvP side, the most visible changes are the burst trims to Devourer Demon Hunter, Windwalker Monk, Protection Paladin, and Arms Warrior, plus the steady-damage help for specs like Assassination Rogue, Outlaw Rogue, Restoration Shaman, and Affliction Warlock.
More importantly, the patch shows Blizzard's current balance direction in Midnight Season 1. Direct PvE buffs are still being used to lift weak performers, tanks are still being normalized around survivability, and PvP design is still pushing away from short-window kill patterns. The next tuning pass on Hero Talent diversity may end up mattering even more in the long run, but the April 7 update already gives players a much cleaner view of where Blizzard thinks the current pressure points really are.
