Patch 12.1, Curse of Ula’tek, is designed to give returning players and alts a new path into Midnight Season 2. The most reliable catch-up approach is to complete the introductory campaign, unlock the Coiled Isle, use its outdoor activities and Delves to establish a baseline, then move into Heroic dungeons, Mythic dungeons, Mythic+ and Season 2 group content as your character becomes ready. The exact live item levels, upgrade costs and any dedicated catch-up gear vendors still require final verification.
What Patch 12.1 Adds for Returning Players and Alts
Curse of Ula’tek adds the Coiled Isle, a new outdoor zone located off the east coast of Zul’Aman, together with Vaults of Atal’Utek, public events, Curse Surges, Cursed Fishing, new Delves, Prey activities and a new progression system connected to the Altar of Corrosion.
Midnight Season 2 begins one week after the content update launches. The season adds the eight-boss Venomous Abyss raid, a new Mythic+ rotation, a new PvP season, additional Prey targets and Bountiful Delves. This staggered launch gives returning players a short preparation window before the full seasonal endgame opens.
| Catch-up element | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Introductory campaign | Unlocks access to the Patch 12.1 storyline and the Coiled Isle. |
| Coiled Isle activities | Provides outdoor progression, rewards and access to new systems. |
| New Delves | Offers solo or small-group progression, including a new Nemesis Delve. |
| Altar of Corrosion | Provides a custom progression tree with player-power and utility effects. |
| Heroic dungeons | Supplies a group-content bridge before Mythic and Mythic+ progression. |
| Season 2 content | Opens the Venomous Abyss raid, the new Mythic+ pool, Bountiful Delves and Season 2 PvP. |
How to Start the Patch 12.1 Catch-Up Route
- Log in on the character you want to gear. Check your bags, equipment, professions, talents and active quests before beginning the new campaign.
- Accept the Patch 12.1 introductory questline. The campaign leads characters toward the Coiled Isle and introduces the events taking place around Zul’Aman and the island.
- Complete the initial Coiled Isle objectives. Do not immediately focus on repeatable farming. The opening quests are expected to unlock the zone’s central activities and progression features.
- Visit the main hub and inspect every available activity. Identify the entrances for Vaults of Atal’Utek, the public-event area, Delve locations and any available vendors or progression interfaces.
- Complete the first available weekly objectives. Weekly quests, Delver’s Call activities and dungeon quests are important because Blizzard has increased the experience supplied by several of these activities.
- Replace the weakest equipment slots first. Prioritize low-level weapons, trinkets and heavily outdated armor before spending upgrade resources on already competitive items.

Which Content Should You Play First?
A practical starting order is to combine the campaign with the easiest available repeatable activities rather than trying to rush directly into the highest difficulty. The campaign unlocks systems, outdoor activities provide accessible rewards and Delves let solo players build confidence without waiting for a dungeon group.
| Player situation | Recommended first content | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh level-cap alt | Patch 12.1 campaign and Coiled Isle activities | Delves, Heroic dungeons and weekly objectives |
| Returning player with old seasonal gear | Campaign, public events and the lowest comfortable Delve tiers | Mythic dungeons or entry-level Mythic+ |
| Returning tank or healer | Campaign followed by Heroic dungeons | Mythic groups and dungeon quests |
| Solo-focused player | Campaign, Delves, public events, Prey and Cursed Fishing | Higher Delve tiers and Bountiful Delves when Season 2 opens |
| Raid-ready player | Campaign plus the strongest accessible weekly rewards | Normal raid groups and Season 2 preparation |
Use the Coiled Isle as Your Main Catch-Up Zone
The Coiled Isle is the central outdoor area for Curse of Ula’tek. It contains several different activities, so it should not be treated as a single farming loop. Complete the introductory objectives first, then rotate between the activities that match your preferred playstyle and available time.
Vaults of Atal’Utek
Vaults of Atal’Utek is group-oriented content inside the mountain of the Coiled Isle. The activity is connected to rotating public events that build toward a boss encounter. Blizzard has described the system as a way for players to gather at specific locations, select a difficulty and use a summoning stone to bring additional players to the encounter.
For an alt, Vaults of Atal’Utek is most useful after the introductory campaign has opened the zone and you have checked whether the current activity offers an upgrade for one of your weakest slots. Do not assume every completion produces a guaranteed best-in-slot item; treat the activity as one part of a wider catch-up route.
Public Events and Curse Surges
Public events provide an accessible way to participate in Coiled Isle content without assembling a traditional dungeon group. Curse Surges are another outdoor activity associated with the island’s corruption and venom theme. Their exact schedules, reward quantities and contribution requirements should be checked against the live tooltips after launch.
These activities are particularly useful while waiting for dungeon queues or when your character is not yet ready for organized Mythic content. They also help you learn the zone before attempting more demanding objectives.
Cursed Fishing
Cursed Fishing is a separate Coiled Isle progression activity and should not be confused with the Altar of Corrosion or Delver’s Journey. It is intended for players who enjoy outdoor and collection-focused content, with its own progression and rewards. Use it as a supplementary activity rather than assuming it is the primary source of combat gear.
Prey Activities
Season 2 adds new Prey targets and new affixes, including hunts connected to the Coiled Isle. Prey is relevant for players who want structured solo or small-group objectives and additional seasonal progression. The safest approach is to complete the introductory Prey requirements first and then choose targets based on the reward shown in-game.
How the Altar of Corrosion Fits Into Gearing
The Altar of Corrosion is a progression system on the Coiled Isle that offers a custom talent tree. Blizzard has described its effects as a mixture of player-power bonuses and quality-of-life perks, including benefits that can reduce the impact of venomous hazards around the island.
These powers are not the same thing as equipment. Unlocking an Altar of Corrosion effect does not replace upgrading your weapon, trinkets or armor. Treat the system as an additional seasonal progression layer that improves your effectiveness in relevant Patch 12.1 content.
Patch 12.1 also introduces Corrosive Souls and Corrosive Coins as separate resources in the Coiled Isle ecosystem. Do not spend either resource until you have checked its exact tooltip and destination. Their acquisition sources, uses, caps and account-wide behavior should be confirmed from the live currency tab and vendor interfaces rather than assumed from early test information.
New Delves for Solo and Small-Group Catch-Up
Curse of Ula’tek adds three Delves: The Ring of Glory, Gnarldor Isle and Venomfall Deeps. Venomfall Deeps is the new Nemesis Delve. Existing Midnight Delves also receive snake and venom variants.
Delves are the clearest catch-up option for players who do not want to depend on dungeon queues or raid groups. Begin with the highest tier you can complete consistently, not necessarily the highest tier visible in the interface. A completed lower tier is more useful than repeated failed attempts that consume time and resources.
Bountiful Delves and Nemesis Content
Bountiful Delves and their keys become available with the start of Midnight Season 2. The season also allows players to progress beyond Tier 7 and face the new Nemesis boss. Because the exact live reward structure and upper-tier item levels require final confirmation, check the Bountiful Delve chest before committing keys or bonus resources.
For alts, save higher-value Delve opportunities for equipment slots that remain far behind your average item level. Avoid replacing an item that is already suitable for your current content unless the new reward provides a clear upgrade.
Dungeon Progression Before Midnight Season 2
Altar of Fangs is a new three-boss dungeon. It is available up to Heroic difficulty when the Curse of Ula’tek content update launches and joins the Mythic+ rotation when Season 2 begins one week later.
This makes Altar of Fangs an important bridge for returning players. Learn the dungeon on Normal or Heroic first, then move into Mythic difficulty when your character has appropriate equipment and your group is comfortable with the mechanics.
Season 2 Mythic+ Rotation
The Season 2 Mythic+ pool contains eight dungeons:
- Altar of Fangs
- Murder Row
- Den of Nalorakk
- The Blinding Vale
- Voidscar Arena
- King’s Rest
- Ruby Life Pools
- Temple of Sethraliss
The four Midnight dungeons returning to the rotation are Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale and Voidscar Arena. King’s Rest, Ruby Life Pools and Temple of Sethraliss return from earlier content.
Do not judge your readiness only by item level. Before entering Mythic+, make sure your character has a usable interrupt, defensive cooldowns, area-of-effect tools and a clear understanding of its current rotation. Returning players should also review talents because Patch 12.1 includes class updates.
Preparing for the Venomous Abyss Raid
The Venomous Abyss opens with Midnight Season 2 and contains eight bosses, with Ula’tek as the final encounter. The raid is not available during the one-week gap between the Patch 12.1 content update and the start of Season 2.
Use that gap to finish the campaign, complete accessible weekly activities, replace severely outdated gear and practice your current specialization in Heroic dungeons, Mythic dungeons or Delves. Do not delay preparation while waiting for a perfect item in every slot. A complete set of functional equipment, updated talents and knowledge of your role’s responsibilities are more valuable than a single minor upgrade.
Catch-Up Priorities for Different Roles
DPS Characters
- Replace an outdated weapon as soon as a reliable upgrade becomes available.
- Practice the current single-target and area-of-effect rotations after Patch 12.1 class changes.
- Keep an interrupt and at least one defensive ability easily accessible.
- Use Delves and Heroic dungeons to learn whether your current talents fit the content you want to play.
Tanks
- Complete the new dungeon on a lower difficulty before leading Mythic groups.
- Check defensive cooldowns, threat tools and utility talents after the patch update.
- Prioritize survivability and reliable mitigation over small damage gains while gearing.
- Use public events and Delves to learn Coiled Isle hazards before tanking group encounters there.
Healers
- Update your healing interface, dispels and raid frames before joining groups.
- Practice movement and emergency cooldown usage in Heroic dungeons.
- Prioritize equipment that improves your ability to handle sustained damage and mistakes.
- Review venom-related mechanics in the Coiled Isle before entering higher-difficulty content.
What Returning Players Should Check Before Spending Resources
- Do not mix currencies. Corrosive Souls, Corrosive Coins, reputation rewards and Delve progression serve different purposes.
- Inspect the upgrade interface first. Upgrade-track names, costs and item-level limits may change before the live release.
- Check the Great Vault after the weekly reset. The most valuable choice depends on which rows you opened and which equipment slots remain weak.
- Do not rush cosmetic systems at the expense of combat progression. Cursed Fishing, reputation and housing rewards are useful for completionists but are not automatically the fastest path to raid readiness.
- Confirm account-wide behavior. Blizzard has announced account-wide improvements for some interface settings, but that does not mean every Coiled Isle progression system is shared between characters.
- Review your bags and bank. Remove obsolete quest items and organize seasonal currencies before starting the new campaign.
A Practical First-Week Route for Alts
- Complete the Patch 12.1 campaign and unlock the Coiled Isle.
- Open the Altar of Corrosion and read the available progression options without spending resources blindly.
- Complete the first weekly quests, Delver’s Call objectives and dungeon quests available to the character.
- Run the new Delves at a comfortable tier and replace the weakest equipment slots.
- Participate in Coiled Isle public events, Curse Surges or Prey while waiting for group content.
- Run Heroic dungeons, then progress to Mythic dungeons when your character and group are ready.
- When Season 2 starts, prioritize Bountiful Delves, Mythic+ and raid preparation according to your preferred role.
- Use the Great Vault to target the slot that remains behind after the weekly activities are complete.
This route is a safe starting order rather than a guaranteed optimal farming strategy. The fastest path for an individual character depends on its current equipment, role, available group and the final live reward values.
Patch 12.1 Catch-Up Mistakes to Avoid
- Skipping the campaign: Several Patch 12.1 activities are connected to the Coiled Isle unlock sequence.
- Starting too high in Delves: Failed high-tier attempts can waste more time than consistent clears at a lower tier.
- Ignoring class updates: A familiar rotation or talent setup may no longer be correct after the patch.
- Spending every new resource immediately: Wait until the Altar of Corrosion and related vendors clearly show their available options.
- Treating outdoor rewards as guaranteed best-in-slot gear: Public events, Prey, Delves and the raid have different reward structures.
- Entering Mythic+ without preparation: Review interrupts, defensives, dispels and dungeon mechanics before pushing keys.
- Assuming every alt has identical access: Verify which campaign steps, reputation levels and account-wide unlocks apply to the character you are playing.
