Heroic dungeons are the first repeatable level 70 challenge in TBC Classic Anniversary and one of the main sources of pre-raid gear, Badges of Justice, reputation, and Primal Nether. As of August 6, 2026, the live Anniversary realms use the original Revered reputation requirement for all five Heroic keys. Blizzard has announced that Phase 3 begins on August 27, so players should recheck the vendors after that update instead of planning around a future threshold that is not yet active. The date and next content release are listed in the official Phase 3 announcement.
This guide explains every current Heroic key, the extra entrance unlocks, account-wide access, group preparation, relative difficulty, dangerous mechanics, efficient routes, and selected high-value loot from all 15 available Heroic dungeons. Magisters' Terrace is covered separately because it is later Phase 5 content and is not part of the current pool.
TBC Anniversary Heroic Dungeon Overview
| Requirement | Current Anniversary rule |
|---|---|
| Character level | Level 70 |
| Party size | Five players: a dedicated tank and healer plus three damage dealers |
| Heroic access | Every party member needs the key for that dungeon hub |
| Key reputation | Revered on the character buying the original key |
| Difficulty state | Pre-nerf Heroic tuning with dangerous trash and punishing boss abilities |
| Lockout | Each Heroic dungeon has a daily reset |
| Boss currency | Every Heroic boss awards a Badge of Justice |
| Final boss material | The last boss guarantees a Primal Nether |
Heroic is not merely a scaled Normal run. Enemies have more health, basic attacks can threaten an unprepared tank, and several encounters add or strengthen mechanics. Crowd control, interrupts, dispels, threat management, and deliberate pulls matter more than raw item level.
All Five Heroic Keys and Their Dungeons
| Heroic key | Required faction | Quartermaster area | Dungeons unlocked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flamewrought Key for Alliance or Flamewrought Key for Horde | Honor Hold for Alliance or Thrallmar for Horde at Revered | Hellfire Peninsula | Hellfire Ramparts, The Blood Furnace, The Shattered Halls |
| Reservoir Key | Cenarion Expedition at Revered | Cenarion Refuge, Zangarmarsh | The Slave Pens, The Underbog, The Steamvault |
| Auchenai Key | Lower City at Revered | Lower City, Shattrath | Mana-Tombs, Auchenai Crypts, Sethekk Halls, Shadow Labyrinth |
| Warpforged Key | The Sha'tar at Revered | Terrace of Light, Shattrath | The Mechanar, The Botanica, The Arcatraz |
| Key of Time | Keepers of Time at Revered | Caverns of Time, Tanaris | Old Hillsbrad Foothills, The Black Morass |
The key belongs to the player, not the party leader. One keyed character cannot switch the instance to Heroic for four unqualified players. Confirm level 70, the correct key, and any separate entrance unlock before the group travels.

Fastest Reputation Routes for Heroic Keys
Questing alone can leave a character short of Revered. The efficient pattern is to use lower-level Normal dungeons before their reputation stops, complete the related zone quests, and finish the last stretch in a level 70 Normal wing. Players who want an organized route through all five reputations can compare their current standings with the TBC Heroic attunement options without changing the in-game requirements.
| Faction | Useful Normal dungeon route | Important warning |
|---|---|---|
| Honor Hold or Thrallmar | Hellfire Ramparts and Blood Furnace early, then Shattered Halls | Save enough faction quests to avoid a long final grind |
| Cenarion Expedition | Slave Pens and Underbog early, then Steamvault | Steamvault remains the reliable finish after lower wings slow down |
| Lower City | Sethekk Halls and Shadow Labyrinth | Mana-Tombs grants Consortium reputation, not Lower City reputation |
| The Sha'tar | Mechanar, Botanica, and Arcatraz | A flying mount or a summon is needed to reach the Tempest Keep satellites |
| Keepers of Time | Old Hillsbrad followed by repeated Black Morass clears | Complete the Caverns of Time story sequence before farming |
Account-Wide Keys and Alt Requirements
TBC Classic Anniversary makes completed access easier to share across an account. After one character reaches Revered and buys the normal Heroic key, that faction's quartermaster sells a Communal Pouch containing one account-bound version of the key. The receiving level 70 alt must still reach Friendly with the associated faction. For Hellfire Citadel, the communal Flamewrought option also works across factions when the alt is Friendly with either Honor Hold or Thrallmar.
- Unlock the original key with a Revered main character.
- Buy the Communal Pouch from the same faction quartermaster and open it.
- Mail the account-bound key inside the pouch to the intended alt.
- Raise the alt to level 70 and Friendly with the matching faction.
- Keep separate dungeon quest unlocks in mind; a shared Heroic key does not automatically open every physical door or story-gated instance.
Heroic Keys Versus Dungeon Entrance Keys
The five reputation keys unlock Heroic difficulty, but several wings have another gate. These are separate systems. A group can own the correct Heroic key and still be stopped by a locked entrance or an unfinished questline.
| Dungeon | Extra access requirement | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|
| The Shattered Halls | Shattered Halls Key from the key mold chain, or a capable Rogue can open the door | One party member for the entrance door |
| Shadow Labyrinth | Shadow Labyrinth Key from the chest after Talon King Ikiss in Sethekk Halls | One party member for the entrance door |
| The Arcatraz | Key to the Arcatraz from the Mechanar and Botanica shard chain, or a capable Rogue can open the door | One party member for the entrance door |
| The Black Morass | Complete the Caverns of Time introduction and Old Hillsbrad progression once on the account | The portal unlock is account-wide, but every level 70 character still needs the Key of Time for Heroic mode |
Recommended Group Setup and Preparation
A workable party assigns one player to tanking, one to healing, and three to damage, but a good Heroic group is built around control tools rather than a fixed class list. Two dependable crowd controls make early progression safer. At least one short interrupt, a defensive dispel, and an offensive purge or spell steal are valuable across the full pool.
- The tank should be level 70, difficult for level 72 enemies to critically hit, and prepared to mark targets before large pulls.
- The healer should carry mana consumables and know which debuffs must be removed immediately.
- Damage dealers should assist the marked target, wait for threat, and use stuns or interrupts before chasing damage meters.
- Humanoid control is especially useful in Shattered Halls, Shadow Labyrinth, and Tempest Keep wings.
- Fear, banish, traps, roots, and kiting cover enemy types that cannot be sheeped or sapped.
- Repair before travel and carry food, water, bandages, potions, and class reagents.
Heroic Dungeon Difficulty Ranking
This ranking assumes a newly geared level 70 group learning the pre-nerf Anniversary versions. Composition can move a dungeon up or down a tier. A coordinated party with the correct control is safer than a better-geared group that rushes unmarked packs.
| Dungeon | Relative difficulty | Main danger |
|---|---|---|
| The Slave Pens | Accessible | Totems, fears, and Quagmirran's poison pressure |
| The Mechanar | Accessible | Charged Fist, polarity awareness, and Sepethrea's fire elementals |
| The Underbog | Accessible | Heavy tank damage, enraged enemies, and Black Stalker control |
| Hellfire Ramparts | Moderate | Mortal Wound, dangerous casters, and the final dragon encounter |
| The Steamvault | Moderate | Large naga packs and Kalithresh's distiller channel |
| Auchenai Crypts | Moderate | Shirrak's healing penalty and Maladaar's stolen souls |
| Sethekk Halls | Moderate | Fears, arcane explosions, and optional Anzu mechanics |
| The Botanica | Moderate | Dense caster packs, summons, and a long clear |
| Old Hillsbrad Foothills | Moderate | Thrall escort recovery and Epoch Hunter pressure |
| The Blood Furnace | Demanding | The Broggok gauntlet and lethal fel orc trash |
| Mana-Tombs | Demanding | Shadow damage, spell reflection, and Shaffar's adds |
| The Shattered Halls | Demanding | Large packs, the execution timer, and sustained tank damage |
| Shadow Labyrinth | Demanding | Long trash sections, mind control, and Murmur mechanics |
| The Black Morass | Demanding | Timed portals, limited recovery, and Temporus |
| The Arcatraz | Demanding | Unforgiving trash, varied damage types, and the final event |
Hellfire Citadel Heroics and Best Loot

Ramparts is short but its bosses punish weak healing and loose positioning. Blood Furnace is much less forgiving because the prison event can chain several difficult waves without a full reset. Shattered Halls is a control test: mark a kill target, neutralize two dangerous enemies when possible, and never let Legionnaires keep a large pack organized.
| Dungeon | Priority mechanics | Selected Heroic loot |
|---|---|---|
| Hellfire Ramparts | Disarm or control dangerous melee, remove curses, spread around Omor, and keep Nazan's fire away from the party | Tree-Mender's Belt for Feral Druids; Wild Stalker Boots for physical ranged damage |
| The Blood Furnace | Assign control before each pull, pace the Broggok cells, cleanse poison, and move away from Keli'dan's fire burst | Icon of Unyielding Courage for physical hit and armor penetration; Embroidered Spellpyre Boots for spell damage |
| The Shattered Halls | Control scouts and casters, interrupt heals, use line of sight, and keep Blade Dance away from vulnerable players | Luminous Fire Opal for healing sockets; The Bladefist for one-handed physical damage |
Coilfang Reservoir Heroics and Best Loot
Slave Pens is usually the best first Heroic because the route is compact and much of the risk can be controlled. Underbog offers an extra boss and broad loot coverage but asks more from the healer. Steamvault is a longer run with dense packs; ranged interrupts and rapid target swaps make both the trash and Kalithresh safer.
| Dungeon | Priority mechanics | Selected Heroic loot |
|---|---|---|
| The Slave Pens | Destroy Mennu's dangerous totems, manage Rokmar's bleed, and remove or heal through Quagmirran's poison | Quagmirran's Eye for spellcasters; Traitor's Noose for agility users |
| The Underbog | Move out of mushrooms, control Claw while killing Musel'ek, and spread for the Black Stalker's electrical attacks | Argussian Compass for defensive stamina; Stormshield of Renewal for shield healers |
| The Steamvault | Interrupt naga casters, kill Steamrigger mechanics quickly, and break Kalithresh's channel by destroying the active distiller | Pontifex Kilt for healers; Amber Bands of the Aggressor for physical damage |
Auchindoun Heroics and Best Loot

Auchindoun contains four very different runs. Mana-Tombs rewards shadow resistance and careful stops on casting enemies. Auchenai Crypts is short but awkward for healers. Sethekk Halls favors coordinated interrupts and line-of-sight play, while Shadow Labyrinth is a long endurance clear where one uncontrolled pack can erase substantial progress.
| Dungeon | Priority mechanics | Selected Heroic loot |
|---|---|---|
| Mana-Tombs | Stop damage during Pandemonius reflection, avoid Tavarok's crystal zones, and kill Shaffar's beacons before they become adds | Ring of Conflict Survival for a defensive ring option; Band of the Crystalline Void for spellcasters |
| Auchenai Crypts | Adapt healing to Shirrak's Inhibit Magic, avoid arriving ghosts, and kill Maladaar's stolen soul before it reaches its target | Fanblade Pauldrons for plate tanks; Light-Touched Stole of Altruism for healers |
| Sethekk Halls | Spread for Syth's elemental pressure, use pillars against Ikiss, and bring a qualified Druid to summon the optional Anzu encounter | Spaulders of Dementia for plate tanks; Terokk's Shadowstaff for casters |
| Shadow Labyrinth | Interrupt and control Cabal packs, recover after Blackheart's chaos, kill Vorpil's void travelers, and respect Murmur's range changes | Etched Fire Opal for strength and critical strike sockets; Master Thief's Gloves for agility damage |
Anzu is optional and does not appear in an ordinary clear without the appropriate Druid summon. Groups farming the encounter may also target Reins of the Raven Lord, but the mount has a low drop chance and should not be treated as a guaranteed reward.
Caverns of Time Heroics and Best Loot
Old Hillsbrad combines normal combat with an escort. Keep Thrall within support range, let the tank establish threat before the NPC reaches a new pack, and preserve cooldowns for the final encounter. Black Morass is a continuous event: assign one player to watch the portal counter, kill the rift elite quickly, and prevent every add from reaching Medivh.
| Dungeon | Priority mechanics | Selected Heroic loot |
|---|---|---|
| Old Hillsbrad Foothills | Protect Thrall, control patrols before the escort contacts them, dispel when useful, and stabilize Epoch Hunter's heavy damage | Doomplate Warhelm for plate damage; Nightfall Wristguards for agility users |
| The Black Morass | Protect Medivh, move rapidly between portals, purge Temporus when possible, and save recovery tools for late waves | Glinting Fire Opal for agility and hit sockets; Breeches of the Occultist for spellcasters |
Tempest Keep Heroics and Best Loot
All three satellites require flying access or a summon. Mechanar is the shortest and most practical early target, but its bosses still punish ignored abilities. Botanica is longer and caster-heavy. Arcatraz has the widest mix of enemy types and damage patterns, making it a poor first Heroic for a group without reliable control.
| Dungeon | Priority mechanics | Selected Heroic loot |
|---|---|---|
| The Mechanar | Interrupt Charged Fist, respond correctly to Capacitus polarity, kite Sepethrea's flames, and control Pathaleon's adds | Shining Fire Opal for spell damage and spell hit; The Sun Eater for avoidance tanks |
| The Botanica | Interrupt healers, stop dangerous spell volleys, move Thorngrin away from fire, and kill Warp Splinter's saplings | Imperial Tanzanite for healer sockets; Feral Staff of Lashing for Feral Druids |
| The Arcatraz | Plan control for each prison pack, avoid persistent ground effects, interrupt Dalliah and Soccothrates, and protect Millhouse during the final event | Belt of Depravity for spell damage; Vileblade of the Betrayer for physical damage |
Badges of Justice and Primal Nether
Every defeated Heroic boss provides a Badge of Justice. The current Heroic dungeon daily adds two more Badges and faction reputation when its objective is completed. The currency is not tied to a random item roll, so a clean route always advances the party toward vendor gear. G'eras in Shattrath sells armor, off-hands, shields, relics, and other upgrades. Compare each purchase with raid drops and crafted gear before spending a large stack.
The final boss of each Heroic also guarantees a Primal Nether. This material is important for high-level profession crafts. Agree on need, profession priority, or group loot rules before the last pull so the run does not end in a dispute.
Best First Heroics and Efficient Farming Route
A fresh level 70 party should begin with Slave Pens, Underbog, or Mechanar, then add Ramparts after the group proves it can handle focused boss damage. Steamvault and Botanica are sensible next steps. Save Blood Furnace, Shattered Halls, Mana-Tombs, Shadow Labyrinth, Black Morass, and Arcatraz until the tank, healer, and control assignments are stable. Players who need repeated runs or a targeted drop can browse the relevant TBC dungeon services after confirming that every character already meets the access rules.
- Choose a dungeon that contains at least one upgrade for two or more party members.
- Check the daily Heroic quests in Shattrath before committing to the route.
- Run a short, controlled dungeon first to test healing, threat, interrupts, and crowd control.
- Move to a longer wing only if the first clear was stable and consumables remain.
- Use the daily reset to rotate loot targets instead of forcing repeated attempts at a locked dungeon.
Magisters' Terrace Heroic in Phase 5
Magisters' Terrace is not one of the 15 Heroics available on August 6, 2026. It is expected with Phase 5 on the Isle of Quel'Danas. Its Heroic access is earned by completing the Normal quest sequence rather than buying one of the five faction keys, so the current Revered key grind does not unlock it in advance.
When it opens, major Heroic targets include Commendation of Kael'thas for tanks and Shard of Contempt for physical damage. Kael'thas can also drop the Phoenix Hatchling and Swift White Hawkstrider. None of these items should be counted as current Anniversary loot before Phase 5 is live.
Common Heroic Dungeon Mistakes
- Confusing a physical entrance key with the reputation key that enables Heroic mode.
- Assuming one keyed player grants Heroic access to the whole party.
- Buying or planning around the later Honored requirement while live Anniversary vendors still require Revered.
- Entering with no reliable interrupt, dispel plan, or crowd control assignments.
- Pulling patrols before marked enemies are controlled.
- Using Normal-mode habits on bosses with stronger or additional Heroic mechanics.
- Calling every popular dungeon item Heroic loot even when it belongs to the Normal table.
- Forgetting the daily lockout and wasting a target run before the intended player joins.
Heroic Dungeon Checklist
| Before the run | Ready condition |
|---|---|
| Level and key | Every player is level 70 and owns the correct Heroic hub key |
| Extra access | The party has any required door key, Rogue support, or completed story unlock |
| Roles | One tank, one healer, three damage dealers, and named control assignments |
| Utility | Interrupts, dispels, purges, stuns, and crowd control are assigned |
| Supplies | Gear is repaired and the party carries mana, health, food, water, and reagents |
| Loot target | The group knows which boss and item justify the run |
| Lockout | No required member is already saved to that Heroic today |
Final Verdict
TBC Anniversary Heroics reward preparation more than speed. Unlock all five keys at Revered under the current rules, separate Heroic access from physical dungeon gates, and start with a compact wing that matches the party's gear. Slave Pens and Mechanar are efficient entry points, while Shattered Halls, Shadow Labyrinth, Black Morass, and Arcatraz should wait until control and recovery are dependable. Targeted loot, daily badges, and guaranteed final-boss crafting materials make every clean clear useful, but only when the group respects the pre-nerf mechanics.
