The Shattered Halls is the level 70 wing of Hellfire Citadel and one of the most demanding five-player dungeons in TBC Classic Anniversary. Normal difficulty has three bosses, while Heroic adds Blood Guard Porung, stronger trash, the timed prisoner event, Badges of Justice, and extra loot. Blizzard's official Anniversary overview confirms the current Outland level cap and the return of the original Burning Crusade dungeon progression.
This guide covers the entrance, both keys, Normal and Heroic requirements, group roles, the route, dangerous enemies, every boss tactic, active quests, Honor Hold and Thrallmar reputation, and the drops worth targeting. The requirements below reflect the live Anniversary rules checked on August 6, 2026.
The Shattered Halls Overview
| Category | Normal | Heroic |
|---|---|---|
| Character level | Entry is possible at 65, but 69 to 70 is practical | Level 70 required |
| Boss count | Three | Four |
| Boss order | Nethekurse, O'mrogg, Kargath | Nethekurse, Porung, O'mrogg, Kargath |
| Physical entrance | One group member opens the gate | One group member opens the gate |
| Difficulty access | No reputation key | Every player needs Heroic access |
| Associated reputation | Honor Hold or Thrallmar through Exalted | Honor Hold or Thrallmar through Exalted |
| Major repeatable rewards | Reputation, blue gear, dungeon set pieces, and recipes | All Normal rewards plus four guaranteed boss Badges, extra epics, and a guaranteed Primal Nether |
Normal is already tuned for organized endgame groups. Heroic sharply increases melee damage and makes failed interrupts, broken crowd control, and slow movement from ground effects much more dangerous. A clean Normal clear is the best rehearsal before attempting the timed Heroic route.
Location and How to Enter
The entrance is inside Hellfire Citadel in the center of Hellfire Peninsula at approximately 47.8, 51.1. Approach the upper southern portal rather than the lower Ramparts and Blood Furnace entrances. The metal gate in front of the portal is the first access check.
Only one party member needs the Shattered Halls Key to open that gate. A level 70 Rogue with 350 Lockpicking can open it instead. This physical door rule is identical on Normal and Heroic, and it is separate from the reputation key that enables Heroic difficulty.

Shattered Halls Key Questline
- Travel to the Ata'mal Terrace outside the Black Temple in Shadowmoon Valley and kill Smith Gorlunk near 67, 36.
- Loot and use the Primed Key Mold. Alliance characters receive Entry Into the Citadel for Honor Hold, while Horde characters receive the Thrallmar version.
- Follow the short introduction to Grand Master Dumphry for Alliance or Grand Master Rohok for Horde.
- Deliver four Fel Iron Bars, two Arcane Dust, and four Motes of Fire.
- Accept Hotter than Hell, form a group for a Fel Reaver in Hellfire Peninsula, and use the Unfired Key Mold on its corpse.
- Return the heated mold to your faction blacksmith and collect the entrance key.
The chain requires level 68 to begin. Completing it once is enough for any group led by that keyed character, while every additional key holder gives the party more flexibility when forming future runs.
Heroic Access and Anniversary Alt Keys
Every player entering Heroic must be level 70 and own the correct faction key. Alliance characters buy the Honor Hold Flamewrought Key from Logistics Officer Ulrike after reaching Revered. Horde characters buy the Thrallmar Flamewrought Key from Quartermaster Urgronn at the same standing. The live Anniversary requirement is Revered, not Honored.
After a main character unlocks the regular key, that quartermaster also sells a pouch containing the account-bound Communal Flamewrought Key. A receiving level 70 alt needs Friendly with Honor Hold or Thrallmar. The official February 12 hotfix made this communal version usable across factions when the alt meets the matching Friendly requirement.
| Access item | Purpose | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|
| Shattered Halls Key | Opens the metal gate outside the instance | One party member, unless a Rogue opens it |
| Alliance Flamewrought Key or Horde Flamewrought Key | Unlocks Heroic Hellfire Citadel dungeons | Every player entering Heroic |
| Communal Flamewrought Key | Account-bound Heroic access for an eligible alt | The receiving level 70 alt at Friendly |
Recommended Group Setup and Preparation
Use one durable tank, one healer comfortable with burst damage, and three damage dealers. Two reliable Humanoid controls make the first Heroic clears substantially safer. Mage Polymorph, Rogue Sap, Hunter traps, Warlock Seduction, Priest Mind Control, stuns, and roots all have useful targets.
- Assign a main assist and mark Legionnaires, healers, and Savages before each pull.
- Bring at least one dependable interrupt for Acolytes and Darkcasters.
- Bring a curse removal if possible because Curse of the Shattered Hand is dangerous on the tank.
- Use Tremor Totem, Fear Ward, or quick recovery plans for Fear effects.
- Give the tank time to establish threat after crowd control breaks and after O'mrogg changes targets.
- Carry healing and mana potions, food, water, class reagents, and repair before entering Heroic.
A Protection Paladin handles the repeated add waves efficiently, but the dungeon does not require one. Warriors and Druids succeed by marking targets, using corners for line-of-sight pulls, controlling spare enemies, and avoiding oversized packs.
Route and Boss Order
| Stage | Normal route | Heroic difference |
|---|---|---|
| Opening halls | Controlled Humanoid packs lead to Nethekurse | Trash can kill an unprepared tank during a stun or curse |
| Grand Warlock Nethekurse | First boss | Shadow fissures are far less forgiving |
| Gauntlet | Push through the corridor and incoming waves | The prisoner timer begins and Porung waits at the end |
| Warbringer O'mrogg | Second boss | Burning Maul creates extreme tank pressure |
| Warchief Kargath Bladefist | Final boss | Blade Dance and adds punish weak positioning |
Do not rush optional side groups until the party agrees on its purpose. Normal reputation runs often clear more trash. Heroic timed groups should use a planned line, avoid unnecessary rooms, and reserve time for recovery before O'mrogg and Kargath.
Players still organizing the Fel Reaver objective or the physical door unlock can review the Shattered Halls Key option. It does not replace the personal Heroic reputation requirement described above.
Dangerous Trash and Kill Priority
| Enemy | Main danger | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Shattered Hand Legionnaire | Calls reinforcements and disrupts casters | Mark first, stun it, and kill it before the pack spreads |
| Shattered Hand Savage | Slice and Dice plus Enrage creates lethal melee bursts | Control or focus it immediately after any Legionnaire |
| Shadowmoon Acolyte | Mind Blast and Prayer of Healing | Use a corner to bring it closer, then interrupt the heal |
| Shadowmoon Darkcaster | Fear and Rain of Fire | Interrupt when practical and move out of the ground effect |
| Shattered Hand Sentry | Charge followed by a heavy melee strike | Keep vulnerable players close behind the controlled target |
| Shattered Hand Brawler | Curse increases physical damage taken | Remove the curse from the tank without delay |
| Shattered Hand Houndmaster | Two Warhounds stack severe physical pressure | Slow, stun, or kill the dogs before the Houndmaster |
| Shattered Hand Assassin | Opens from stealth and may Sap the tank | Stay behind the tank and use Flare where available |
| Shattered Hand Sharpshooter | Ranged control can disrupt threat and healing | Use crowd control or pull it around a corner |
The default priority is Legionnaire, Savage, healer, then the remaining damage dealers. Adjust when a loose enemy is attacking the healer. Breaking every control target for faster area damage is one of the most common causes of Heroic wipes.
Grand Warlock Nethekurse Tactics
Four non-elite Fel Orc Converts stand in front of Nethekurse. The boss remains outside direct combat while the party kills them, but he joins when the last Convert dies or when the opening sequence takes too long.
- Clear nearby enemies before starting the four Converts so no patrol joins the boss.
- Kill the Converts in a controlled sequence and use the time between deaths to stabilize health and threat.
- The tank faces Nethekurse away from the group to limit Shadow Cleave exposure.
- Every player leaves Lesser Shadow Fissure immediately. Its Heroic damage can kill a player who hesitates.
- When Dark Spin begins, melee move away and ranged players continue only from a safe position.
- Recover quickly after Death Coil and keep the healer free from unnecessary cleave damage.
The encounter is a movement check, not a damage race. Saving cooldowns is acceptable on Normal, but Heroic groups should use defensive tools if Death Coil and a badly placed fissure overlap.
| Notable drop | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Greathelm of the Unbreakable | Strong defensive plate head piece for a new level 70 tank |
| Cloak of Malice | Physical damage cloak with useful offensive stats |
| Pattern: Spellstrike Hood | Rare tailoring recipe for a major caster crafted set |
Heroic Gauntlet and Prisoner Timer
The Heroic timer starts when the group triggers the fire gauntlet after Nethekurse. The first prisoner is scheduled after 55 minutes, the second 10 minutes later, and the final prisoner 15 minutes after that. The Shattered Hand Executioner waits beyond Kargath. Kill him before the last execution to obtain the Unused Axe of the Executioner for Trial of the Naaru: Mercy. Reaching him before any prisoner dies produces the best bonus loot and can add a fifth Badge to the four guaranteed boss Badges.
- Drink and rebuff before crossing the gauntlet trigger because the clock continues afterward.
- Move as a unit, keep the tank at the front, and kill the incoming enemies instead of splitting the party.
- Remove healers and high-damage melee targets first while ranged players handle enemies positioned along the corridor.
- Continue forward between waves. Remaining in one position allows the event to consume time and mana.
- Stop at a safe point to restore resources before Porung rather than entering the boss with scattered players.
- After Kargath dies, move through the opened path and kill the Executioner before looting at length.
The total window before the third execution is approximately 80 minutes, but a group doing Trial of the Naaru should plan around the first 55-minute mark. Faster completion preserves more prisoners and improves the Executioner's additional rewards.
Blood Guard Porung Heroic Tactics
Porung appears only on Heroic at the end of the gauntlet. His encounter is mechanically simple, but his Cleave can destroy a second player standing in front of him.
- The tank pulls Porung clear of remaining event enemies and points him away from the group.
- Melee stand directly behind the boss rather than beside the tank.
- Ranged players spread enough to see any uncontrolled add approaching.
- Finish surviving trash before committing all cooldowns to the boss.
- Keep the tank high on health because an ordinary melee swing followed by Cleave can land quickly.
| Heroic-only drop | Armor type or role |
|---|---|
| Blood Guard's Necklace of Ferocity | Physical damage neck |
| Pantaloons of Flaming Wrath | Spell damage cloth legs |
| Nimble-foot Treads | Agility leather boots |
| Belt of Flowing Thought | Intellect mail belt |
| Spaulders of Slaughter | Offensive plate shoulders |
Warbringer O'mrogg Tactics
O'mrogg's two heads argue for control and cause abrupt target changes. He cannot be taunted, so a non-tank selected by the active head must stop attacking and create distance while the tank rebuilds effective threat.
- Tank O'mrogg near the middle with his front turned away from melee and healers.
- Ranged players use maximum practical distance to reduce Blast Wave and Thunderclap disruption.
- When he switches targets, the chosen player stops damage and moves away without running through the melee group.
- The tank continues generating threat even when O'mrogg is temporarily chasing someone else.
- During Burning Maul, use defensive cooldowns and concentrated tank healing. This is the most dangerous Heroic overlap.
- Recover after Fear, then restore the original formation instead of attacking from random sides.
Melee should never chase the boss across the room during a target switch. Following him increases the chance of Blast Wave damage and makes his return to the tank harder to read.
| Notable drop | Primary use |
|---|---|
| Runesong Dagger | Caster one-hand weapon |
| Lightsworn Hammer | Healing one-hand weapon |
| Skyfire Hawk-Bow | Physical ranged weapon |
| Jeweled Boots of Sanctification | Healing cloth boots |
Warchief Kargath Bladefist Tactics
Kargath is the final boss and the largest positioning test. He periodically uses Blade Dance to charge between players, while additional enemies enter the arena. On Heroic, several players standing together can die during the same sequence.
- The tank holds Kargath near the center so every player has room to spread and the boss can be collected after Blade Dance.
- Ranged players and the healer take separate positions around the outer area. Do not form a stack.
- Melee spread around the rear arc and leave the boss when Blade Dance begins.
- Stop uncontrolled movement through other players. Each charge should reach one target rather than a cluster.
- Assign one damage dealer and the tank's area threat to collect the periodic adds. Control dangerous extras instead of letting them reach the healer.
- When Blade Dance ends, allow the tank to secure Kargath before full damage resumes.
- Avoid standing beside the tank because Sweeping Strikes can punish an extra target.
If adds accumulate, use stuns, traps, roots, and controlled area damage while maintaining the spread for Blade Dance. Heroic groups can compare a planned clear with the Shattered Halls dungeon option, but success still depends on correct keys, individual positioning, and the live lockout.
| Notable drop | Difficulty | Reason to target it |
|---|---|---|
| Figurine of the Colossus | Normal and Heroic | Exceptional block and self-healing trinket for Paladin tanks |
| Gloves of Oblivion | Normal and Heroic | Oblivion dungeon set hands |
| Hallowed Handwraps | Normal and Heroic | Hallowed Raiment dungeon set hands |
| Wastewalker Gloves | Normal and Heroic | Wastewalker dungeon set hands |
| Beast Lord Handguards | Normal and Heroic | Beast Lord dungeon set hands |
| Gauntlets of Desolation | Normal and Heroic | Desolation Battlegear dungeon set hands |
| Gauntlets of the Righteous | Normal and Heroic | Righteous Armor dungeon set hands |
| The Bladefist | Heroic only | Epic fist weapon with a haste effect |
The Shattered Halls Quests
Collect quests before entering because several objectives require specific boss drops or trash types. The two daily dungeon quests rotate, so neither is guaranteed to be offered on a particular day.
| Quest | Mode | Objective | Main reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turning the Tide or The Will of the Warchief | Normal or Heroic | Loot Warchief Kargath's Fist | 500 Honor Hold or Thrallmar reputation and a gear choice |
| Pride of the Fel Horde for Alliance or Pride of the Fel Horde for Horde | Normal or Heroic | Kill eight Legionnaires, four Centurions, and four Champions | 250 Honor Hold or Thrallmar reputation |
| Fel Embers | Normal or Heroic, Alliance only | Use the Grand Warlock's Amulet at a brazier after Nethekurse | 250 Honor Hold reputation and a gear choice |
| Tear of the Earthmother | Normal only | Loot the Tear of the Earthmother from O'mrogg | Progress in David Wayne's anti-demon weapon chain |
| Kalynna's Request | Heroic only | Loot the Tome of Dusk from Nethekurse and complete the Sethekk Halls objective | Nightbane summon chain progress and 250 Violet Eye reputation |
| Trial of the Naaru: Mercy | Heroic only | Kill the Executioner before the final prisoner dies and loot the Unused Axe of the Executioner | Tempest Keep attunement chain progress and 500 Sha'tar reputation |
| Wanted: Shattered Hand Centurions | Normal or Heroic daily | Kill four Centurions when Mah'duun offers this rotation | 250 Consortium and faction reputation plus an Ethereum Prison Key |
| Wanted: Bladefist's Seal | Heroic daily | Loot the seal from Kargath when Zhareem offers this rotation | Two Badges of Justice and 350 Consortium plus faction reputation |
The official current schedule places Phase 3 on August 27, 2026. Imprisoned in the Citadel was historically added with a later content stage and is not active on the live Anniversary realms as of August 6, 2026. Do not confuse that future rescue objective with Trial of the Naaru: Mercy, which is currently relevant and uses the Executioner's axe.
Honor Hold and Thrallmar Reputation
Both difficulties grant Honor Hold reputation to Alliance characters and Thrallmar reputation to Horde characters from Neutral through Exalted. A full clear gives approximately 1,600 reputation on Normal or 2,900 on Heroic before racial or temporary modifiers. The total varies when optional enemies are skipped.
- Use Normal Shattered Halls after the easier Normal Hellfire wings stop awarding reputation at Honored.
- Reach Revered on the first character to buy the regular Flamewrought Key.
- Continue Normal or Heroic clears for Exalted quartermaster rewards.
- Combine dungeon quests and the rotating dailies with clear reputation.
- Use Honor Hold Favor or Thrallmar Favor for a 25 percent reputation bonus lasting 30 minutes when available.
For a first character below Revered, Normal is the direct progression route because Heroic cannot be entered before the reputation key is purchased. For an eligible alt with the communal key, Friendly is sufficient for Heroic access, but Heroic still remains the harder farm.
Notable Normal Loot
| Boss | Item | Target player |
|---|---|---|
| Nethekurse | Greathelm of the Unbreakable | Plate tank |
| Nethekurse | Pattern: Spellstrike Hood | Tailor or caster economy target |
| O'mrogg | Runesong Dagger | Spell damage caster |
| O'mrogg | Lightsworn Hammer | Healer |
| O'mrogg | Skyfire Hawk-Bow | Hunter or physical ranged user |
| Kargath | Figurine of the Colossus | Block-focused tank |
| Kargath | Six dungeon set hand pieces listed above | Multiple classes and armor types |
Notable Heroic Loot
Heroic retains the Normal boss tables and adds Porung's five items, extra Kargath epics, Heroic gems, one Badge from each boss, and a guaranteed Primal Nether from Kargath.
| Source | Heroic reward | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Each boss | Badge of Justice | Currency for level 70 epic gear |
| Porung | Blood Guard's Necklace of Ferocity | Physical damage neck |
| Kargath | The Bladefist | Epic haste fist weapon |
| Kargath | Bands of Rarefied Magic | Epic spell damage cloth wrists |
| Kargath | Forestheart Bracers | Epic healing leather wrists |
| Kargath | Boots of the Righteous Path | Epic healing plate boots |
| Any boss | Sovereign Tanzanite, Polished Chrysoprase, or Luminous Fire Opal | Heroic-quality socket gems |
| Final boss | Primal Nether | Bind-on-pickup crafting material |
Common Mistakes
- Confusing the shared entrance key with the personal Heroic key.
- Entering Heroic without enough Humanoid control or interrupt coverage.
- Attacking several marked targets and breaking crowd control.
- Allowing a Legionnaire to call reinforcements during an already large pull.
- Standing in Nethekurse's fissures or beside Porung's tank.
- Chasing O'mrogg through the room after his target changes.
- Stacking during Kargath's Blade Dance.
- Starting the Heroic gauntlet before the party restores mana and confirms the timed plan.
- Assuming the rotating daily quest is always available.
Pre-Run Checklist
- Confirm one player can open the outer gate.
- For Heroic, confirm all five players are level 70 and have the correct Flamewrought access.
- Collect the faction boss quest, Pride of the Fel Horde, and any active daily.
- Bring the relevant Normal-only or Heroic-only chain quest before zoning in.
- Assign crowd control, interrupts, curse removal, and an add handler for Kargath.
- Agree whether the run prioritizes reputation, loot, or the 55-minute prisoner target.
- Restore mana before triggering the gauntlet and loot the Executioner promptly after Kargath.
Final Verdict
The Shattered Halls is both the main Honor Hold or Thrallmar reputation bridge after Honored and a serious Heroic coordination test. Normal teaches the route, the three core bosses, and the control requirements while supplying dungeon set pieces, weapons, a valuable tailoring pattern, and tank gear. Heroic adds Porung, the prisoner clock, four boss badges, extra epics, and a guaranteed crafting material from Kargath. Groups that separate the two key requirements, control Legionnaires and Savages, move cleanly on every boss, and spread for Blade Dance can turn a punishing dungeon into a reliable reputation and loot run.
