The Steamvault is the highest-level five-player wing of Coilfang Reservoir and one of the most useful repeatable dungeons for characters finishing Outland progression. It combines Cenarion Expedition reputation, Karazhan and Tempest Keep attunement objectives, strong level 70 gear, and a compact three-boss route. This guide covers the version available on the Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary realms, including both Normal and Heroic difficulty.
Normal runs are valuable for late leveling, reputation, quests, and pre-raid upgrades. Heroic runs keep the same central encounter ideas but punish failed interrupts, uncontrolled trash, and slow target swaps much more severely. Players who prefer an organized clear can also compare the route with an available Steamvault dungeon run while planning their own gear or reputation goals.
The Steamvault Overview
| Category | Steamvault Details |
|---|---|
| Zone | Zangarmarsh |
| Dungeon hub | Coilfang Reservoir |
| Party size | Five players |
| Normal entry level | Level 65 minimum, with levels 68 to 70 recommended |
| Heroic entry level | Level 70 |
| Boss count | Three |
| Associated reputation | Cenarion Expedition |
| Normal access item | None |
| Heroic access item | Reservoir Key or the Anniversary account-bound alternative |
| Main reasons to run | Quests, Cenarion Expedition reputation, attunement progress, pre-raid loot, Badges of Justice, and Primal Nether |
The dungeon has an open central area with two side routes. Hydromancer Thespia and Mekgineer Steamrigger each guard a control panel. Both bosses must die and both panels must be activated before the gate to Warlord Kalithresh opens.
Location and How to Enter
Travel to Coilfang Reservoir in the northern part of central Zangarmarsh. The underwater pipe entrance is near coordinates 50, 33. Swim down through the open pipe, follow the tunnel until it rises into the interior cavern, and approach the three dungeon portals. The Steamvault is the middle portal. The Slave Pens is on the left and The Underbog is on the right when facing the portals from the meeting stone.
No flying mount is required because the route begins underwater. A character can enter Normal at level 65, a threshold also recorded in Blizzard's Burning Crusade Classic hotfix notes. Groups normally wait until levels 68 to 70 because the final enemies are tuned for late Outland progression.

Normal Entry and Internal Gate Requirements
The Steamvault has no physical entrance key on Normal difficulty. Every party member who meets the level requirement can cross the portal. The only mandatory gate appears inside the instance and protects the final wing.
- Defeat Hydromancer Thespia and use the Main Chamber Access Panel behind her.
- Defeat Mekgineer Steamrigger and activate the second Main Chamber Access Panel.
- Return to the central gate after both panels are active.
- Clear the final trash corridor and enter Warlord Kalithresh's chamber.
Forgetting either panel forces the group to backtrack. Assign one player to confirm both activations immediately after the first two bosses die.
Heroic Access and Anniversary Alt Keys
A first character needs level 70 and Revered reputation with the Cenarion Expedition. At Revered, buy the Reservoir Key from Fedryen Swiftspear at Cenarion Refuge around coordinates 79.2, 63.8. The key opens Heroic versions of The Slave Pens, The Underbog, and The Steamvault. Heroic access is separate from the two control panels inside Steamvault, so the panels still must be activated during every clear.
The broader Outland key and attunement system is summarized in Blizzard's official Outland attunement overview. On Anniversary realms, a character that has unlocked the regular key can also purchase the communal pouch and obtain a Communal Reservoir Key. This version binds to the account and can be mailed to another eligible character.
| Character | Required Reputation | Other Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| First character unlocking the key | Revered with Cenarion Expedition | Buy the regular Reservoir Key |
| Alt using the communal key | Friendly with Cenarion Expedition | Level 70 and possession of the account-bound key |
Set the dungeon difficulty to Heroic before anyone enters. Heroic dungeons use a daily lockout, so confirm that every player is available for the same instance ID before starting.
Recommended Group Setup and Preparation
Use the conventional five-player lineup with a dedicated tank, a healer, and three DPS. Steamvault does not demand one exact class composition, but its trash rewards groups that bring humanoid crowd control, at least one reliable interrupt, and a way to manage fear.
| Party Need | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Humanoid crowd control | Separates Coilfang Sirens, Oracles, and Myrmidons in the most dangerous packs |
| Short interrupt | Stops Oracle heals and prevents Steamrigger Mechanics from restoring the boss |
| Magic dispel | Removes Enveloping Winds and Lung Burst during Hydromancer Thespia |
| Fear protection | Tremor Totem, Fear Ward, or immediate control prevents Siren fears from reaching nearby packs |
| Fast target switching | Required for Steamrigger Mechanics and Kalithresh's active distillers |
- The tank should mark targets before dense pulls and turn Myrmidons away from melee and pets.
- The healer should carry mana consumables and keep a dispel ready for Thespia instead of spending every global on raw healing.
- Damage dealers should bind an assist target and save short cooldowns for Bog Overlords, Steamrigger add waves, and distillers.
- Everyone should repair before entering and make enough bag space for quest items, Coilfang Armaments, and boss loot.
- Optional Nature resistance can reduce mistakes against lightning and disease damage, but correct movement and control remain more important.
Route and Boss Order
Hydromancer Thespia and Mekgineer Steamrigger can be defeated in either order. The most readable route takes Thespia first, returns through the middle, clears toward Steamrigger, and then uses the newly opened final gate.
| Stage | Objective | Route Note |
|---|---|---|
| Entrance packs | Clear the first patrols and Bog Overlords | Pull enemies away from neighboring groups and give ranged players room |
| Thespia wing | Reach and defeat Hydromancer Thespia | Use crowd control on Sirens or Oracles in the tightly packed room |
| First panel | Activate the device behind Thespia | Complete the nearby Karazhan fragment objective if the quest is active |
| Steamrigger wing | Follow the opposite branch and defeat Mekgineer Steamrigger | Watch the Slavemaster patrol before pulling groups of Dreghood Slaves |
| Second panel | Use the device behind Steamrigger | The final gate opens only after both panels are active |
| Final corridor | Control the mixed caster and Myrmidon packs | Use hard crowd control and avoid fighting two Sweeping Strikes enemies on the group |
| Final boss | Defeat Warlord Kalithresh | Tank close to a distiller and call every target swap |
The Second Key Fragment for Karazhan is in an Arcane Container underwater near Thespia's platform. Open it only when the party is ready because a guardian appears and must be killed before the fragment can be looted.
Dangerous Trash and Kill Priority
Heroic Steamvault is decided more often by trash control than by boss complexity. The last mixed packs are especially dangerous because healing, fear, silence, and Sweeping Strikes can overlap.
| Enemy | Main Threat | Recommended Response |
|---|---|---|
| Coilfang Oracle | Heal and Sonic Burst | Interrupt every heal, keep casters at range, and kill or control the Oracle early |
| Coilfang Siren | Fear and magic damage reduction | Use crowd control or focus the Siren while fear protection is active |
| Coilfang Myrmidon | Sweeping Strikes | Face it away, keep extra melee outside its cleave area, and stun or kite when necessary |
| Bog Overlord | Trample, Disease Cloud, and Enrage | Spread around the tank, let melee retreat at low health, and use defensive cooldowns |
| Coilfang Engineer | Bomb and Net | Do not stack; interrupt or stun when possible and move out of repeated bomb damage |
| Coilfang Slavemaster | Links nearby Dreghood Slaves into the pull | Check patrol timing, focus the Slavemaster, and avoid uncontrolled damage on loose slaves |
With two available crowd controls, isolate the Siren and one Myrmidon, then kill the Oracle first. With only one control, secure the Siren to remove fear risk and interrupt the Oracle while the group burns it. Never allow a feared player to run toward an uncleared section.
Hydromancer Thespia Tactics
Hydromancer Thespia begins with two Water Elementals. Their Frostbolt Volley creates the initial healing pressure, while Thespia places dangerous Nature damage zones and removable magic debuffs.
| Ability | Effect | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Lightning Cloud | Creates a damaging area that rapidly punishes anyone standing inside | Move immediately and keep the fight away from narrow edges |
| Enveloping Winds | Stuns a random player for six seconds | Dispel the magic effect quickly, especially if a cloud appears nearby |
| Lung Burst | Applies a magic damage-over-time effect | Dispel it before it consumes unnecessary healer mana |
| Frostbolt Volley | The two elementals damage multiple party members | Kill the elementals first or Banish one while eliminating the other |
On Normal, the tank should pull the encounter into a wider area, secure both elementals and the boss, and let the group destroy the adds one at a time. A Warlock may Banish one elemental until Thespia is under control. Ranged players should spread so one Lightning Cloud does not force the entire party to move through the same path.
On Heroic, elemental spell damage is much less forgiving and Thespia can place two Lightning Clouds instead of one. Keep the center of the fighting area open, dispel Enveloping Winds before the target is trapped in a cloud, and do not begin heavy boss damage until the uncontrolled elemental is dead. After the encounter, activate the panel behind her before leaving.
Mekgineer Steamrigger Tactics
Mekgineer Steamrigger is a target-switch encounter. His personal attacks are manageable when the party spreads, but Steamrigger Mechanics can repeatedly repair him if they are ignored.
| Ability | Effect | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Electrified Net | Roots a target and deals damage | Keep the boss stable so a rooted player is not exposed to extra attacks |
| Saw Blade | Hits a random player and others positioned too close | Use loose spacing around the room |
| Super Shrink Ray | Reduces the victim's damage and may backfire on the boss | Continue the mechanic plan and avoid delaying add swaps |
| Steamrigger Mechanics | Groups arrive near 75, 50, and 25 percent health and channel repairs | Use immediate area damage, interrupts, stuns, and focused attacks |
- Spread the party before engaging and keep Steamrigger near the center.
- Push toward each health threshold with area damage ready.
- Swap to every Mechanic as soon as the wave appears.
- Interrupt repair channels or touch each add with damage to break its channel.
- Return to the boss only after the active Mechanics are controlled.
The Anniversary Heroic version does not introduce a separate new boss mechanic. Damage is more dangerous and failed repairs waste more time, so clean swaps matter more than raw boss damage. Protection Paladin area damage, Mage control, and short stuns are particularly effective against the non-elite Mechanics. Activate the second panel after the boss dies.
Warlord Kalithresh Tactics
Warlord Kalithresh tests awareness and burst damage. The room contains Naga Distillers. Kalithresh periodically channels power from a nearby active distiller, and the party must destroy that container before the channel succeeds.
| Ability | Effect | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Warlord's Rage | Greatly increases Kalithresh's damage and attack speed after a completed distiller channel | Destroy the active Naga Distiller before he finishes drawing power |
| Spell Reflection | Reflects spells while the visible shield is active | Casters stop offensive spells until the shield disappears |
| Impale | Places a physical damage-over-time effect on a random target | Keep affected players healthy and watch for refreshed or overlapping damage |
| Head Crack | Adds direct physical pressure on the current target | Maintain defensive coverage and steady tank healing |
- Tank Kalithresh beside a distiller without blocking the party's view of the room.
- Assign one player to announce the channel and mark the newly active container.
- Every damage dealer swaps to the distiller immediately.
- Casters watch for the blue Spell Reflection shield and stop before a spell is returned.
- Move the boss toward the next usable distiller as the fight continues.
On Heroic, Kalithresh hits harder and the distillers have more health, but the solution does not change. Save short offensive cooldowns for containers instead of spending everything at the pull. If Warlord's Rage activates, use tank defensives and decide quickly whether the party can survive the buff; preventing it is far safer than trying to heal through it.
The Steamvault Quests
Several Steamvault objectives belong to long attunement chains, so a character can finish the dungeon successfully and still miss important progress by arriving without the correct prerequisite. Review the quest log before entering.
| Quest | Difficulty | Steamvault Objective |
|---|---|---|
| The Warlord's Hideout | Normal or Heroic | Accept from Watcher Jhang outside the portals and defeat Warlord Kalithresh |
| Orders from Lady Vashj | Normal or Heroic | Loot the random quest-starting orders from Coilfang Engineers or Myrmidons and deliver them to Ysiel Windsinger |
| Underworld Loam | Normal or Heroic on Anniversary realms | Loot the Vial of Underworld Loam from Hydromancer Thespia during the Illidari-Bane weapon chain |
| The Second and Third Fragments | Normal or Heroic | Interact with the submerged Arcane Container beside Thespia, defeat its guardian, and collect Karazhan's Second Key Fragment |
| Trial of the Naaru: Strength | Heroic only | Loot Kalithresh's Trident and combine this objective with Murmur's Essence from Heroic Shadow Labyrinth |
| Wanted: Coilfang Myrmidons | Daily dungeon quest | Defeat 14 Coilfang Myrmidons when Nether-Stalker Mah'duun offers this rotating assignment |
| Wanted: The Warlord's Treatise | Heroic daily | Recover The Warlord's Treatise connected to Warlord Kalithresh for Wind Trader Zhareem |
Check the water beside Thespia before the group moves on if The Second and Third Fragments is active. Also inspect every quest-starting item before leaving, because Orders from Lady Vashj begins from a drop rather than an NPC standing inside the dungeon.
Cenarion Expedition Reputation
Every Steamvault clear grants Cenarion Expedition reputation. Unlike Normal Slave Pens and Normal Underbog, Normal Steamvault continues awarding reputation through Exalted. A complete Normal clear is worth approximately 1,796 reputation, while a complete Heroic clear is worth approximately 2,559 before racial bonuses, event modifiers, or skipped enemies change the result.
Coilfang enemies can also drop Coilfang Armaments. After the related introduction is available, each repeatable turn-in grants 75 Cenarion Expedition reputation. Players targeting their Reservoir Key, profession recipes, or the Exalted mount can combine full Steamvault clears with armament turn-ins. A dedicated Cenarion Expedition reputation route is another contextual option when comparing the time required for Revered or Exalted.
| Source | Useful Until | Practical Value |
|---|---|---|
| Normal Steamvault full clear | Exalted | Repeatable without a daily Heroic lockout and suitable for focused reputation farming |
| Heroic Steamvault full clear | Exalted | Higher approximate reputation plus badges and Heroic rewards |
| Coilfang Armaments | Exalted | Tradeable items that convert into repeatable reputation |
| Non-repeatable Steamvault quests | Exalted | One-time progress that can be saved for later reputation ranks |
Notable Normal Loot
Normal Steamvault is a strong gearing dungeon because its boss table covers caster, healer, tank, ranged physical, and class dungeon-set needs. The following list focuses on meaningful targets rather than every possible drop.
| Item | Boss | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Incanter's Gloves | Hydromancer Thespia | Mage dungeon-set gloves with useful caster stats |
| Chestguard of No Remorse | Hydromancer Thespia | Leather physical damage chest for fresh level 70 characters |
| Cloak of Whispering Shells | Hydromancer Thespia | Healing cloak with Intellect and mana regeneration |
| Mask of Penance | Mekgineer Steamrigger | Plate healing helm with a socket |
| Steam-Hinge Chain of Valor | Mekgineer Steamrigger | Tank necklace with block rating and unusually high block value |
| Recoilless Rocket Ripper X-54 | Mekgineer Steamrigger | Ranged weapon with Stamina and critical strike rating |
| Serpentcrest Life-Staff | Mekgineer Steamrigger | Two-handed healing staff with Spirit and strong healing power |
| Devilshark Cape | Warlord Kalithresh | Well-known pre-raid tank cloak with defense and block value |
| Breastplate of the Righteous | Warlord Kalithresh | Protection Paladin dungeon-set chest |
| Beast Lord Mantle | Warlord Kalithresh | Hunter dungeon-set shoulders |
| Tidefury Gauntlets | Warlord Kalithresh | Shaman dungeon-set gloves |
| Vermillion Robes of the Dominant | Warlord Kalithresh | Caster chest with spell hit and spell damage |
Notable Heroic Loot
Heroic bosses retain their normal boss drops. Each boss also awards a Badge of Justice, while Warlord Kalithresh adds the Heroic epic pool and can drop a Primal Nether. These are the most important additions to track:
| Heroic Reward | Source | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Wrathtide Longbow | Warlord Kalithresh | Heroic epic bow with Agility and attack power |
| Pontifex Kilt | Warlord Kalithresh | Heroic epic cloth legs designed for healing |
| Wave-Fury Vambraces | Warlord Kalithresh | Heroic epic mail bracers with spell power and mana regeneration |
| Amber Bands of the Aggressor | Warlord Kalithresh | Heroic epic plate bracers combining defense with Strength and Agility |
| Sundered Chrysoprase | Warlord Kalithresh | Heroic epic green gem combining critical strike rating and mana regeneration |
| Badge of Justice | Every Heroic boss | Currency for Shattrath badge gear |
| Primal Nether | Warlord Kalithresh on Heroic | Material used in major high-level crafted items |
Heroic loot does not replace the normal table. A player farming Devilshark Cape, Breastplate of the Righteous, a dungeon-set piece, or a Steamrigger weapon can still target that item on Heroic while also collecting badges and Heroic-only rewards.
Common Mistakes
- Entering the wrong Coilfang portal instead of using the middle entrance.
- Leaving a boss room without activating its control panel.
- Pulling a Siren near uncleared enemies and allowing Fear to chain into another pack.
- Stacking melee and pets behind a Myrmidon during Sweeping Strikes.
- Ignoring Oracle heals or letting Sonic Burst catch the healer and ranged casters.
- Standing inside Thespia's Lightning Cloud while waiting for a cast to finish.
- Continuing to attack Steamrigger while Mechanics repair him.
- Casting into Kalithresh's Spell Reflection shield.
- Switching to a distiller too slowly and allowing Warlord's Rage to activate.
- Leaving the Karazhan fragment or a quest-starting drop behind after the clear.
Pre-Run Checklist
- Confirm that every Normal character is at least level 65 and appropriately geared for a late Outland dungeon.
- For Heroic, verify level 70, the correct difficulty setting, the Reservoir Key or communal version, and the daily lockout.
- Collect all available dungeon, attunement, and rotating daily quests before entering.
- Assign marks, crowd control, interrupts, and the player responsible for announcing target swaps.
- Bring mana consumables, repair gear, and clear enough bag slots for armaments and quest items.
- Activate the panel after Thespia and the panel after Steamrigger.
- Check the underwater Arcane Container near Thespia when the Karazhan fragment quest is active.
- Save burst damage for Mechanics and Naga Distillers rather than wasting every cooldown on boss health.
Final Verdict
The Steamvault is a compact dungeon with unusually broad progression value. Normal mode supports late leveling, Cenarion Expedition farming, attunement steps, and pre-raid gearing, while Heroic adds badges, crafting materials, and an exclusive final-boss reward pool. The clear becomes consistent when the group controls Sirens and Oracles, activates both access panels, removes Thespia's magic effects, stops Steamrigger repairs, and destroys every distiller before Kalithresh gains Warlord's Rage.
