Engineering is a crafting profession in World of Warcraft Retail’s Midnight expansion. It turns ore, crafted reagents, mechanical components, and materials from other professions into profession tools, combat equipment, guns, scopes, optional reagents, cogwheels, utility items, raid support gadgets, and housing decor. It is not a gathering profession, Cooking, or Fishing.
Engineering is one of the most specialized professions in Midnight. It can be excellent for players who want useful gadgets, profession equipment, crafting-order income, and access to unusual utility items, but it is not automatically the cheapest profession to level. Most of the profession’s extra recipes are learned through the Recycling system, and reaching the highest skill levels can require a substantial investment in materials or Crafting Orders.
Midnight Engineering Profession Overview
Midnight Engineering has a maximum skill of 100. Trainer recipes provide the foundation of the profession and are available early, but many additional recipes are discovered through Recycling. This makes Engineering different from professions where most of the recipe book is learned directly from a trainer or purchased from a vendor.
Engineering creates equipment for several armor types, including goggles, bracers, boots, and helmets. It also produces the P.O.W. x3 gun, scopes such as Farstrider's Hawkeye and Weighted Boomshots, profession tools and accessories, crafting reagents, optional reagents, cogwheels, utility items, and Midnight housing decor.
Engineers also have access to Recycle, a profession ability that destroys crafted reagents from other professions and converts them into Engineering materials. Recycling can also discover additional Engineering recipes once the required specialization investment has been made.

Is Midnight Engineering Worth It?
Engineering is worth choosing if you value utility, specialized equipment, and access to products that are not made by other professions. It is particularly attractive for players who regularly use profession tools, enjoy crafting orders, want to supply raid utility items, or are prepared to maintain several characters and compare market prices carefully.
The profession is less appealing if your only goal is to make fast gold with minimal investment. Engineering leveling becomes more expensive after approximately skill 80, and recipe discovery through Recycling can be unpredictable. The most profitable items are often tied to specialization, high-quality materials, optional reagents, Concentration, reputation or recipe access, and customer demand.
Engineering is also a strong quality-of-life profession. Its products can improve profession performance, provide combat utility, support ranged weapons, and offer items that are convenient outside combat. However, you should not level Midnight Engineering solely for a single gadget without checking the Auction House first. In some cases, purchasing the finished item may cost less than acquiring every material and specialization needed to craft it.

How to Learn Midnight Engineering
Visit a Midnight Engineering trainer in Silvermoon or another current-expansion profession hub and learn the Midnight version of Engineering. If your character has never learned Engineering, learn the base profession first and then train the Midnight expansion recipe set.
The profession uses the standard two-profession limit. Engineering occupies one primary profession slot. You can pair it with Mining, another crafting profession, or a gathering profession on the same character.
Midnight Engineering trainers include Danwe and Gloresse. The important point is to select the current Midnight profession training option rather than an older expansion’s Engineering category. Old expansion Engineering skill does not replace your Midnight Engineering skill.
Once you have learned the profession, open the profession window and review the recipe filters. Enable unlearned recipes when planning your progression, and check the First Craft indicator before making an item. The crafting journal is the best place to confirm whether a craft grants a First Craft reward, skill point, or Knowledge Point-related bonus.
How to Level Midnight Engineering
Midnight Engineering leveling is divided into two practical stages: reaching approximately skill 80 efficiently, then deciding how much you are willing to spend to reach skill 100.
All trainer recipes are available by skill 35. These recipes can carry you through the early profession levels, but additional recipe discovery becomes increasingly important. At skill 25, you can begin unlocking Engineering specializations. You should plan your first Knowledge Points before spending heavily, because Recycling is needed for the most efficient early-to-mid leveling route.
To use Recycling for recipe discovery, invest 10 Knowledge Points into Recycling. Without that investment, Recycling will not discover the recipes required by the recommended route. The profession window will indicate when Recycling has gained the ability to learn additional recipes.
Recycling destroys five crafted reagents at a time. Different reagents produce different combinations of Engineering materials, so compare Auction House prices before buying a large quantity. Cheap crafted items from another profession are usually better than expensive raw materials, but the best choice changes with the server economy.
Leveling from 1 to 80
A commonly used material plan for the efficient route to approximately skill 80 is:
- 281 Pile of Junk
- 76 Evercore
- 49 Malleable Wireframe
These quantities are a planning target rather than a guarantee. Yellow and green recipes can fail to award skill points, and players who craft additional First Craft recipes will need more materials. Material quality does not matter for the basic leveling route, so avoid paying extra for higher-quality materials unless a specific recipe requires them.
The suggested route includes crafting Evercore Shade, Evercore Dome Dinger, and Quel'dorei Bracelets or an equivalent Recycling recipe. The exact number of crafts can vary because of recipe color and skill-up chance.
Do not rush past every new recipe in the journal. Crafting one of each available recipe can provide First Craft rewards and contribute to Artisan Engineer's Moxie. If the material cost is reasonable, First Craft bonuses can reduce the amount of paid leveling required later.
Leveling from 80 to 100
Engineering becomes considerably more expensive after skill 80. There is no single best route for every character because the most efficient choice depends on your specialization, recipe access, material prices, and whether you can complete customer orders.
There are three main approaches:
- Profession equipment: A reliable route for players who have invested in Market Mobility. Rare profession equipment can be mass-crafted, but the material cost can be high.
- Combat gear: Goggles, boots, bracers, helmets, and the P.O.W. x3 gun can provide skill points while creating items that may be sold through Crafting Orders.
- Housing decor: Decor recipes can provide a slower, more flexible progression path. They may be useful when you already have the materials or can sell the finished items, but their sale rate is less predictable.
Use the crafting journal to check recipe colors before committing to a large batch. Yellow and green crafts may provide skill points, but they can require more attempts than expected. Compare the cost per expected skill point rather than only the material cost of one craft.
Recommended Leveling Route
- Learn Midnight Engineering from a current-expansion trainer.
- Craft inexpensive trainer recipes until you approach skill 25.
- Unlock Engineering specializations when eligible.
- Place the first 10 Knowledge Points into Recycling if you intend to use the efficient Recycling-based route.
- Prepare Pile of Junk, Evercore, and Malleable Wireframe.
- Use Recycling to discover recipes and craft the cheapest available skill-up items.
- Craft First Craft recipes when their material cost is reasonable.
- Continue the inexpensive route toward approximately skill 80.
- At skill 80, choose profession equipment, combat gear, or decor based on your specialization and market access.
- Use Crafting Orders whenever customers provide expensive reagents or when the order itself reduces your material risk.
Do not spend all your Knowledge Points on a production branch before deciding how you will finish the profession. A player who plans to craft profession equipment should not follow a combat-only path simply because the early recipes are available. Likewise, a player focused on reagents may benefit more from Bits and Bots and Recycling than from expensive equipment specializations.
Engineering Materials and Shopping List
Engineering uses a mixture of specialized Engineering components and crafted reagents from other professions. The exact shopping list changes with the recipe route, but the most important early materials include:
- Pile of Junk for the Recycling-based leveling route.
- Evercore for several Engineering crafts and tools.
- Malleable Wireframe for Engineering equipment and other advanced products.
- Aetherlume for higher-level tools, accessories, and equipment.
- Soul Sprocket for Engineering tools such as Junker's Multitool.
- Fused Vitality, Majestic Claw, and Majestic Hide for advanced profession gear.
- Crafted reagents from other professions for Recycling.
- Ore, cloth, leather, and other expansion materials used by specific recipes.
Before buying materials, inspect the full recipe cost in the profession window. Some Engineering crafts use materials that are produced by other professions and may be cheaper to purchase as finished items. Recycling is particularly sensitive to market fluctuations, so compare several crafted reagent types instead of buying the first available option.
Midnight Engineering Specializations and Knowledge Points
Engineering has four Midnight specializations. You can eventually learn all of them, but Knowledge Points accumulate over time, so your early path should match your main goal.
| Specialization | Primary purpose |
|---|---|
| Market Mobility | Profession tools and accessories for Engineering, Mining, Fishing, Jewelcrafting, and Tailoring |
| Combat Analytics | Goggles, bracers, boots, helmets, guns, and combat equipment |
| Recycling | Recipe discovery, general Engineering skill, Recycling output, and profession stats |
| Bits and Bots | Crafting reagents, optional reagents, cogwheels, utility products, and M3DDY |
The total Knowledge Point cost to complete the four trees is substantial: 570 Knowledge Points in total. The individual totals are 225 for Market Mobility, 165 for Combat Analytics, 90 for Recycling, and 90 for Bits and Bots.
Market Mobility
Market Mobility is the profession-equipment specialization. It covers Engineering tools and accessories as well as equipment for Mining, Fishing, Jewelcrafting, and Tailoring. It is the natural choice for players who want to fill Crafting Orders for profession gear.
The specialization improves your skill when crafting profession equipment and unlocks higher-end recipes as you progress through its branches. Because the tree is broad, focusing on every profession at once is inefficient. Choose one or two equipment categories first, then expand after you can reliably craft them.
Combat Analytics
Combat Analytics improves combat equipment, including goggles, bracers, boots, helmets, and guns. The tree is divided by equipment category, so you should choose the slot or product family that matches your expected customers.
This path suits players who want to complete weapon and armor Crafting Orders. Maxing one category is generally more useful than spreading points across every slot, because high-quality customers usually prefer a specialist who can consistently produce one item at the required rank.
Recycling
Recycling is both a leveling tool and a general-purpose Engineering specialization. It improves the results of the Recycle ability, provides Engineering skill bonuses, and strengthens secondary profession stats such as Multicraft, Ingenuity, and Resourcefulness.
Investing 10 points into Recycling is essential if you want to discover the recipes used by the efficient leveling route. The main Recycling node can eventually increase Recycling output, while its branches improve the profession’s general crafting performance.
Bits and Bots
Bits and Bots focuses on Engineering reagents, optional reagents, cogwheels, and utility products. It is a good choice for Auction House production because many of its items are tradeable and can be sold without waiting for a customer to place a personal gear order.
The specialization also teaches recipes such as M3DDY, the Midnight raid resurrection item. It is especially useful for players who want to combine reagent production with raid utility and occasional high-demand consumables.
Best Specialization Paths by Goal
Best path for leveling efficiently
Start with Recycling and reach the required 10-point investment for recipe discovery. Continue developing Recycling if you want stronger general Engineering bonuses, then move into the branch that supports your intended products.
Best path for profession equipment
Choose Market Mobility. Concentrate on one equipment category first, such as Engineering accessories, Mining tools, Fishing equipment, or another profession’s tool set. This reduces the time needed to reach reliable skill levels for the products you actually plan to sell.
Best path for combat gear and guns
Choose Combat Analytics. Select a specific gear category before investing broadly. A focused goggles, bracers, boots, or gun specialist is more likely to reach useful crafting breakpoints than a character with a few points scattered across every branch.
Best path for reagents and Auction House sales
Choose Bits and Bots, supported by Recycling. This route improves reagent and optional-reagent crafts while giving you more useful options when direct Crafting Order demand is low.
Engineering Stats, Tools, and Gear
Engineers can equip one profession tool and two profession accessories. Higher-quality gear provides stronger profession stats, and the best versions may require specialization, reputation, or a Crafting Order because some advanced items are bind on pickup.
The main Engineering tool progression includes:
- Junker's Multitool, using Soul Sprocket and Evercore.
- Turbo-Junker's Multitool, using Malleable Wireframe, Majestic Claw, Aetherlume, and Evercore.
- Turbo-Junker's Multitool v9, using Fused Vitality, Malleable Wireframe, Majestic Claw, Aetherlume, and Evercore.
Useful Engineering accessories include Junker's Junk Visor and advanced profession accessories such as Head-Mounted Beam Bummer. You can obtain basic versions through the Auction House, while better versions may need to be ordered from a specialist.
Choosing profession stats
Ingenuity helps reduce the cost of crafts by giving you opportunities to use fewer reagents or produce high-quality items with less Concentration. Resourcefulness reduces material consumption and is valuable for public orders or repeat production. Multicraft is particularly useful for reagents, scopes, and embellishment-style products where extra output can be sold. Concentration supports limited high-quality crafts when your normal skill is not enough.
For combat equipment and profession gear, Ingenuity and Resourcefulness are generally the most practical stats. For reagents, scopes, and consumables, Multicraft becomes more attractive, with Ingenuity as a useful secondary choice.
Tool enchants can also be matched to your production style. Multicrafting enchants suit reagent production, Ingenuity enchants suit Concentration-based crafting, and Resourcefulness enchants are useful when handling many public or chat orders without relying on Concentration.
Important Engineering Crafts
Engineering’s most important product categories in Midnight include the following:
- Combat equipment: Goggles, helmets, bracers, boots, and related armor pieces.
- Weapons: The P.O.W. x3 gun and other Engineering weapon products.
- Scopes: Permanent ranged-weapon enhancements such as Farstrider's Hawkeye and temporary effects such as Weighted Boomshots.
- Profession equipment: Tools and accessories for Engineering, Mining, Fishing, Jewelcrafting, and Tailoring.
- Reagents: Engineering components and crafted materials used by other recipes.
- Optional reagents: Products used to modify or improve crafted items.
- Cogwheels: Mechanical components tied to Engineering production.
- Utility items: Gadgets and support products with practical uses outside ordinary combat.
- Raid support: M3DDY and other Engineering utility products.
- Housing decor: Mechanical and arcane-themed decor items.
Always check whether a recipe is bind on pickup, requires a Crafting Order, or uses a limited material before advertising it. These restrictions strongly affect whether a product is suitable for the Auction House or must be made for a specific customer.
Making Gold with Midnight Engineering
Engineering gold-making works best when you treat it as several smaller markets rather than relying on one item. Monitor profession equipment, combat orders, reagents, scopes, utility products, and decor separately.
Crafting Orders
Crafting Orders are the most reliable route for high-quality combat gear and advanced profession equipment. Customers often supply expensive reagents, which reduces your risk. Specialize in a narrow product category and advertise the exact quality you can produce instead of accepting every order blindly.
Profession equipment
Profession tools and accessories can maintain steady demand because players replace them when upgrading characters, creating alts, or improving a secondary profession. Market Mobility is the best starting point, but remember that the tree is broad and expensive. Focus on equipment with regular order activity on your realm.
Reagents and optional reagents
Bits and Bots can support Auction House sales because reagents are purchased by other crafters. Multicraft and Resourcefulness can significantly change your margins. Calculate the value of expected extra output before investing in expensive gear or optional reagents.
Scopes and combat products
Scopes and weapon products can sell well when a new raid tier, season, or character gearing period increases demand. Their profitability changes quickly, so avoid making a large stockpile without checking recent sales and current material costs.
Housing decor
Housing decor can generate occasional high-margin sales, but it is less predictable than profession equipment or reagents. Craft decor when you already own the materials, when the recipe grants a useful First Craft reward, or when your realm has visible demand.
Engineering can also convert cheap crafted products from other professions into more valuable components through Recycling. This is only profitable when the input items are inexpensive and the resulting materials or discovered recipes have real demand.
Best Profession Pairings
Engineering and Mining
Mining is the most natural pairing. It supplies ore and expansion materials, lowers your Auction House dependence, and gives you a useful activity while leveling or traveling. The downside is that you may need to choose between gathering materials and crafting products when both markets are profitable.
Engineering and Jewelcrafting
This pairing works well for players who want to produce or use profession equipment and manage a broader crafting business. Jewelcrafting can supply related products and create opportunities for cross-profession sales, although both professions can require substantial investment.
Engineering and another crafting profession
Pairing Engineering with Tailoring, Leatherworking, or Blacksmithing can give you access to crafted reagents used by Recycling and allow you to supply some of your own inputs. This is convenient for self-sufficient characters, but it does not always produce the cheapest materials compared with buying whichever crafted reagent is currently cheapest.
Common Midnight Engineering Mistakes
- Ignoring Recycling: Many important recipes are learned through Recycling, so skipping the specialization can make leveling much more expensive.
- Spending Knowledge randomly: Engineering has four broad trees. Decide whether you want equipment, combat gear, Recycling power, or reagents before committing.
- Buying every material at once: Auction House prices can vary significantly. Compare finished crafted reagents as well as raw materials.
- Using high-quality materials for leveling: The basic route does not require premium material quality.
- Overproducing bind-on-pickup gear: Some advanced items must be made through Crafting Orders and cannot be listed freely on the Auction House.
- Expecting every craft to award a skill point: Yellow and green recipes can fail, especially near the higher skill ranges.
- Spreading specialization points too widely: A narrow specialist usually reaches useful crafting breakpoints sooner.
- Ignoring First Craft bonuses: Crafting a new recipe once can provide valuable progress and Knowledge-related rewards.
- Leveling only for one gadget: Check whether the finished utility item is cheaper to buy before investing in the entire profession.
Practical Midnight Engineering Tips
- Use the crafting journal to track First Craft rewards before beginning a large leveling batch.
- Keep Recycling materials separate from sale stock so you do not accidentally consume items intended for Crafting Orders.
- Check the Auction House for cheap finished crafted reagents before gathering or crafting your own inputs.
- Equip profession gear before making expensive crafts, especially when trying to reach a quality breakpoint.
- Use Ingenuity and Concentration for occasional high-quality crafts, but favor Resourcefulness when completing many orders without Concentration.
- Use Multicraft for reagents, scopes, and products where extra output can be sold.
- Learn one equipment family thoroughly before investing in several unrelated Market Mobility branches.
- For combat gear, specialize in the slot with the strongest demand on your realm rather than automatically learning every recipe.
- Use Crafting Orders to reduce the cost of bind-on-pickup equipment and expensive recipes.
- Review material costs regularly. Engineering margins can change whenever another profession discovers a cheaper leveling craft.
- Keep an eye on new raid releases, gearing resets, profession changes, and housing demand because these can shift Engineering markets quickly.
