Tanning Rack in WoW Forever: Blueprint, Crafting Materials and Camping Uses

Tanning Rack in WoW Forever: Blueprint, Crafting Materials and Camping Uses

Tanning Rack in WoW Forever is a temporary Leatherworking workstation placed beside a campfire. You need 140 Leatherworking and Blueprint: Tanning Rack to make your own; the current Forever database and beta player reports identify Razorclaw the Butcher in Shadowfang Keep as the Blueprint source. One crafting operation costs 5 Medium Leather, 3 Fine Thread and 2 Simple Wood and produces two finished rack items in the current recipe data. The station enables specific equipment and reagent recipes and retains Camp Tent's Rested XP benefit. As of October 14, 2026, Forever remains in beta with a level-30 character cap, ahead of its November 4 launch. Higher-level recipe entries therefore describe current data rather than fully tested launch crafting routes.

Short answer: Reach 140 Leatherworking, obtain and learn Blueprint: Tanning Rack, then craft two racks with 5 Medium Leather, 3 Fine Thread and 2 Simple Wood. Place one finished rack beside a valid campfire and craft nearby; if your Leatherworking skill is below 140, you can use a station placed by another eligible Leatherworker.

What Tanning Rack Does in WoW Forever

Tanning Rack adds a workstation requirement to selected Leatherworking crafts. Knowing a pattern and owning its materials are not always enough: when the recipe requires a Tanning Rack, a deployed station must also be nearby.

There are three separate parts to the unlock. The Blueprint teaches the recipe, the recipe creates portable rack items, and using one of those items places the temporary workstation. Buying the Blueprint does not give you an already-built station, while carrying a finished rack does not satisfy a nearby-workstation requirement until someone deploys it.

The current items are Blueprint: Tanning Rack, item 273096, and Tanning Rack, item 279941. The Blueprint is an Uncommon recipe; the finished rack is a Common consumable. These quality labels describe the items, not the probability of obtaining the Blueprint.

The broader WoW Forever Leatherworking guide covers profession leveling and equipment. This page focuses on acquiring the workstation, using its crafting window and avoiding wasted farming or placement materials.

Where to Get Blueprint: Tanning Rack

Blueprint: Tanning Rack is currently associated with Razorclaw the Butcher in Shadowfang Keep. Multiple beta players report obtaining the Blueprint from this boss, supporting the database source listing.

Blizzard's Camping overview establishes that advanced campsite Blueprints come from specific dungeon bosses. The Razorclaw assignment comes from Forever-specific database information and player observations, rather than a published Blizzard drop-rate table.

Buying the Blueprint or a Finished Rack

The Blueprint and finished Tanning Rack are reported as tradeable in the beta. Check the Auction House or another player's available stock if repeated dungeon trips are inconvenient.

Choose the item according to your goal. Buy the Blueprint if your Leatherworker needs to manufacture racks regularly. Buy a finished rack if you already have the required skill to place it and only need a temporary station. Below 140 Leatherworking, buying the finished item still leaves you needing an eligible Leatherworker to deploy it.

A database's generic buy-price field does not establish that a particular vendor sells the Blueprint. Likewise, beta auction listings do not establish a normal launch price. Compare the actual listing with the time and travel required for your own dungeon route.

Can a Leatherworking Trainer Teach Tanning Rack?

An October 8 beta forum reply claims that a Leatherworking trainer can teach the rack. However, the verified recipe records identify Blueprint: Tanning Rack as the learning item and list Razorclaw the Butcher as its source. No specific trainer offering the recipe has been independently verified.

You can check your trainer's current recipe list, but do not treat trainer availability as a confirmed alternative to the Blueprint. The documented acquisition route is the dungeon drop or purchasing the Blueprint from another player. Reaching 140 Leatherworking alone does not automatically teach the recipe.

How to Farm Razorclaw the Butcher in Shadowfang Keep

Shadowfang Keep stands above Pyrewood Village in southern Silverpine Forest. Its entrance is around 44.8, 67.8 on the Silverpine map. Both factions can pursue the Blueprint, although Alliance players have a longer approach through Horde territory.

Razorclaw is an early boss, so a dedicated Blueprint attempt does not require defeating Archmage Arugal at the end of the dungeon. A full clear may still be worthwhile when your party wants quests, equipment or experience.

Route from the Entrance to Razorclaw

Follow the opening dungeon route rather than trying to reach Razorclaw through a closed courtyard door. The prisoner interaction after Rethilgore is part of the normal progression.

  1. Clear the opening section: Defeat Rethilgore and deal with enemies around the prison.
  2. Open the courtyard: Speak with Deathstalker Adamant as Horde or Sorcerer Ashcrombe as Alliance so the prisoner opens the way forward.
  3. Continue through the courtyard: Clear the necessary enemies on the approach to Razorclaw's room.
  4. Defeat Razorclaw: Loot the boss and check for Blueprint: Tanning Rack.
  5. Choose your next step: Continue the dungeon with the party or leave before preparing another attempt.

Agree on the Blueprint's loot handling before the pull. A party kill provides an opportunity for the item to drop, not a guaranteed copy for every Leatherworker present.

Solo Farming vs. a Dungeon Group

Level-30 Hunters, Rogues and Feral Druids have reported successful solo attempts during the beta. Those reports do not establish that every character of those classes can safely repeat the route with any gear.

If the trash, prisoner section or boss is unreliable alone, use a group. Compare the complete attempt, including travel, recovery and returning to the entrance, rather than only the boss kill. Bring enough supplies for the route and follow any instance-entry limit displayed by the current client.

Blueprint Rarity Without Invented Drop Rates

No dependable final drop probability has been established. Player comments include both successful drops after a few attempts and repeated runs without one. Neither type of anecdote is a measured rate.

Database percentages depend on submitted observations and may not reflect the actual Forever beta or launch loot chance. This guide therefore does not assign a reliable percentage, an expected number of runs or a promised farming time.

Set a practical stopping point for your session and compare available trade listings afterward. An unsuccessful batch of runs does not by itself prove that the Blueprint has been removed, that your profession is wrong or that you need to defeat additional bosses first.

Tanning Rack Skill Requirement and Exact Materials

The Blueprint and finished item both require 140 Leatherworking. The Blueprint's item level of 25 and the rack's item level of 28 are not character-level requirements. What controls learning and placing the rack is the profession requirement shown in their tooltips.

The manufacturing spell is Tanning Rack. Its current data shows a ten-second craft that creates two portable rack items. Creating them is separate from the Camping contribution cooldown triggered by placement.

Preparing a Batch and a Campfire

With two rack items per craft, two crafting operations require 10 Medium Leather, 6 Fine Thread and 4 Simple Wood and produce four racks. Three operations require 15 Medium Leather, 9 Fine Thread and 6 Simple Wood and produce six. These totals cover the rack recipe only.

A Basic Campfire Kit is a separate Cooking craft requiring 1 Simple Wood and the Flint and Tinder tool in the current beta. The Basic Campfire recipe is learned through Cooking training. If you need to create the fire yourself, add that wood to your shopping list and bring the required tool. One rack craft plus one Basic Campfire Kit uses 5 Medium Leather, 3 Fine Thread and 3 Simple Wood in total, excluding the reusable tool.

Skinning can supply the leather, but it is not required to learn the Blueprint or place the rack. You can obtain materials through other players. Do not craft a large stock purely for Leatherworking points: the rack recipe is already grey at 145 in current data.

How to Place and Use a Tanning Rack

A Tanning Rack needs a nearby campfire. It is not an independent workstation that can be deployed wherever your character happens to stand.

  1. Prepare the production batch: Bring the materials for the equipment or reagents you intend to make, not just materials for the rack.
  2. Choose a valid campsite: Use a suitable outdoor area away from dangerous patrols.
  3. Establish or visit a campfire: A Basic Campfire is sufficient when it has room for your contribution.
  4. Check contribution availability: Confirm that the camp can accept the object and your shared Camping cooldown is ready.
  5. Deploy the rack: Use the finished item from your bags near the fire.
  6. Craft beside the station: Open Leatherworking and select a known recipe that explicitly requires Tanning Rack.
  7. Finish before it expires: Stay near the workstation and complete the prepared batch while it remains active.

The placement spell currently has a ten-second cast and flags restricting it to outdoor use, out of combat and outside shapeshift forms. These are beta-client rules, so check the actual error message if a location rejects deployment.

Station Lifetime, Consumption and Shared Cooldown

The current placement spell lists a 15-minute duration and a baseline one-hour cooldown. Deploying the workstation consumes one rack item; the physical rack is temporary, while learning the Blueprint permanently adds its recipe to your profession book.

The one-hour restriction is shared with other Camping profession features. Placing a different profession object beforehand can therefore prevent you from immediately deploying the rack. The Legacy perk Field Guide can shorten the cooldown on adding Camping features if unlocked. A larger campfire provides more object capacity but does not independently remove your personal shared cooldown.

Basic Campfire supports three contributed objects, and each player normally contributes one. Upgraded fires support five or ten. Campfire kits have their own five-minute use cooldown rather than sharing the one-hour profession-feature cooldown.

Having several portable racks in your bags does not mean you can place them one after another. Prepare all intended crafts first and coordinate with other Leatherworkers when the group needs additional station access.

Using Another Player's Tanning Rack Below 140 Skill

You do not need to own the Blueprint to craft beside somebody else's deployed rack. You still need the pattern, its materials and the Leatherworking skill required by that particular recipe.

This matters because the first rack-dependent equipment recipes appear at 125 Leatherworking, and Barbaric Bracers require 130. A character can qualify for one of those crafts before qualifying to place their own station at 140.

A practical solution is to ask an eligible Leatherworker to deploy a rack, supplying a finished rack if needed. Beta players have reported doing this rather than leveling immediately to 140. Access to a shared station does not bypass a recipe's own profession or specialization requirement.

Tanning Rack Camping Benefits and Rested XP

The rack retains all Camp Tent benefits and can be placed over a Camp Tent to replace it. You do not lose the lower-tier resting utility when upgrading the campsite's Leatherworking object.

Camp Tent's effect raises stored Rested XP to 5% of a level when the character has less than that amount. It does not add another 5% on top of an already larger reserve and does not increase all experience earned by 5%.

For example, a character with no stored rest can receive a small rested reserve through the tent benefit. A character already holding 10% of a level as Rested XP does not receive an additional 5% simply because a rack replaces the tent.

The Boosted Rest restriction prevents repeated immediate refills for one hour. Replacing the tent with a rack should not be treated as a way to bypass that restriction. Camp benefits generally require sitting or crafting near the fire for about one minute; merely owning or carrying the rack does not grant the campsite's effects.

For the full campsite setup and the distinction between stored Rested XP and Sleeping Bag's percentage bonus, see the WoW Forever Camping guide.

Leatherworking Recipes That Require Tanning Rack

Current beta recipe indexes identify 48 Leatherworking crafts requiring this workstation. The list includes equipment as well as Cured Rugged Hide; the tooltip's reference to certain reagents does not mean the rack is used only for material processing.

The following groups cover that indexed set without treating every entry as obtainable or fully tested under the current level-30 cap. Skill values describe recipe requirements, while pattern acquisition, additional materials, specialization and character progression can impose further restrictions. Having access to a Tanning Rack does not supply the rare materials required by individual equipment recipes.

Legguards, Belts, Gloves and Bracers

Early station requirements can affect leveling equipment well before high-level Leatherworking. Check the workstation line when buying a new pattern or planning a profession batch.

  • Leg equipment, skill 125: Brawler's Leather Legguards, Defender's Leather Kilt, Stormrider's Leather Kilt, Totemic Leather Leggings, Trapper's Leather Legguards and Wisdom's Leather Leggings.
  • Leather belts, skill 150: the Mender's, Prowler's, Skirmisher's, Skulker's, Skycaller's, Stalker's and Warden's Leather Belt recipes.
  • Additional belt: Gem-studded Leather Belt at 160.
  • Leather gloves, skill 175: the Mender's, Prowler's, Skirmisher's, Skulker's, Skycaller's, Stalker's and Warden's Leather Gloves recipes, plus Shadowskin Gloves.
  • Other gloves: Dragonscale Gauntlets at 200 and Gauntlets of the Sea at 205.
  • Bracers: Barbaric Bracers at 130; Mender's, Skirmisher's, Skycaller's and Stalker's Mail Bracers at 225.

Footwear, Shoulders, Helms, Breastplates and Hide Curing

Later entries show that workstation access remains relevant after the initial unlock. They are current recipe-data requirements, not proof that their complete acquisition and crafting routes are playable at the beta cap.

  • Leather footwear, skill 200: Mender's, Prowler's, Skulker's, Skycaller's and Warden's Leather Shoes.
  • Mail footwear, skill 200: Mender's, Skirmisher's, Skycaller's and Stalker's Mail Boots.
  • Mail shoulders, skill 210: Mender's, Skirmisher's, Skycaller's and Stalker's Mail Shoulder recipes.
  • Head equipment: Wolfshead Helm at 200 and Helm of Fire at 225.
  • Chest equipment: Feathered Breastplate at 225, Dragonscale Breastplate at 230 and Green Dragonscale Breastplate at 235.
  • Reagent craft: Cured Rugged Hide at 225.

Do not extend this requirement to every Armor Kit, leather conversion or cured-hide recipe. A particular recipe's workstation field decides whether the rack is needed. Sewing Machine is another named workstation, so a recipe specifically requiring it should not be assumed to work beside a Tanning Rack.

Tanning Rack Crafting and Placement Problems

Most failures can be narrowed down by separating recipe learning, portable-item creation, station placement and equipment crafting. Each stage checks different conditions.

The Rack Recipe Is Missing

Check that you have reached 140 Leatherworking and actually used the Blueprint. Carrying the unlearned recipe item does not add the craft to your profession book. Also check profession filters that might hide recipes without available materials.

If your profession is capped below the required skill, obtain the appropriate training first. If a trainer does not list Tanning Rack, follow the documented dungeon-drop Blueprint route rather than assuming that the recipe unlocks automatically.

A Recipe Says Requires Tanning Rack

Make sure the rack has been deployed and is still active. Move close to the workstation, then reopen the profession window if its requirement display has not refreshed.

A decorative rack near a town's Leatherworking vendor is not necessarily a functional station. An October beta report specifically describes a character unable to craft rack-dependent leg equipment beside the apparent rack at the Crossroads market. Use a deployed campsite object rather than assuming scenery fulfills the requirement.

Below 140 skill, use another Leatherworker's station if you already meet the equipment recipe's own requirements. Buying the finished rack alone does not remove its placement skill check.

The Portable Rack Will Not Place

Check the nearby campfire, available object capacity, your existing contribution and the shared cooldown. Leave combat and cancel shapeshifting before trying again in a suitable outdoor area.

If the workstation disappears after its normal lifetime, that is not the Blueprint being forgotten. You need another consumable rack and an available placement cooldown. Reopening the interface cannot make an expired physical station available again.

Tanning Rack FAQ

These answers cover ownership, progression and cost questions that commonly arise when arranging shared crafting or deciding whether to farm the Blueprint.

Can a non-Leatherworker place a rack bought from the Auction House?
No. The finished item requires 140 Leatherworking to place. Buying a tradeable rack does not bypass that requirement.

Does owning the Blueprint unlock the equipment patterns made at the rack?
No. It teaches the workstation recipe. Each equipment or reagent recipe must still be learned separately and meet its own requirements.

Do I need to finish a Shadowfang Keep quest before the Blueprint can drop?
The checked source records do not establish such a quest prerequisite. The documented acquisition is loot from Razorclaw; complete the normal opening dungeon progression to reach him.

Does Reagent Economy make Tanning Rack free to craft?
No. Blizzard describes that Legacy perk's material removal for tier-one Camping features. Tanning Rack is tier two, so it is not covered by that benefit.

Conclusion

Obtain the Blueprint when you need regular access to your own workstation; use a shared rack for an earlier recipe when that is more practical. Prepare the full crafting batch before deployment, account for the consumable station and its shared cooldown, and compare Blueprint listings with your actual farming time without relying on an unverified drop probability. Recheck beta-specific recipe and placement details when Forever launches on November 4.
