City of Dalaran is a new five-player WoW Forever dungeon for levels 28–33 located in the Alterac Mountains. The dungeon begins in Dalaran's sewers before opening into the restored city itself, where unstable Arcane magic, corrupted constructs and hostile creatures have overwhelmed the Kirin Tor.
The current dungeon has eight documented boss encounters: Atrexis the Grave Knight, Lyn the Ignored, Arcane Anomaly, Arcanic Enigma, Unstable Sentinel, Mana Devourer, Fel Ancient and Shade of the Archmage. Lyn is a secret boss and requires the Tome of Dalaran to summon.
Quick answer: City of Dalaran is officially a level 28–33 dungeon. Both factions can enter, but they obtain the Dalaran Sewer Key differently. Alliance completes a short An Alarming Request → Heart of Disruption chain, while Horde follows a longer Tarren Mill chain. Only one player needs to unlock the sewer gate for the group.

City of Dalaran Location and Dungeon Entrance
City of Dalaran is located beside Lordamere Lake in the Alterac Mountains. Unlike old Classic versions where the city remained hidden behind a magical barrier, Forever opens the restored city and uses it as a full dungeon environment.

Alliance Entrance
Alliance players begin with An Alarming Request from Emissary Jacques in Southshore. The quest sends you to the Image of Archmage Modera near Dalaran.
Modera then offers Heart of Disruption and provides a Dalaran Sewer Key.
Alliance players can approach through Dalaran and enter the sewer system near Cantrips & Crows.
Horde Entrance
Horde uses the exterior sewer entrance on the northwest side of Dalaran. A useful reported marker is around /way 8.8 59.6 in Alterac Mountains.

The gate requires the Dalaran Sewer Key. Every group member does not need a personal key: one player with the key can open the gate for the rest of the party.
How to Get the Dalaran Sewer Key
Alliance Key Quest
- Pick up An Alarming Request from Emissary Jacques in Southshore.
- Travel to the Image of Archmage Modera near Dalaran.
- Accept Heart of Disruption.
- Modera provides the Dalaran Sewer Key.
- Enter the dungeon and recover the Arcane Mote from the final encounter.
Horde Key Quest Chain
Horde has a longer access chain beginning with Magus Wordeen Voidglare in Tarren Mill.
- Key to the City — obtain the Grimy Key.
- Prison Break In — optional side objective that can be completed during the same preparation phase.
- Stone Tokens — optional Keeper Bel'varil quest.
- Dalaran Patrols — defeat 6 Dalaran Summoners and 12 Elemental Slaves.
- Bracers of Binding — optional quest to collect Bracers of Earth Binding.
- Blood in the Streets — deliver the message to the Image of Archmage Modera.
- Heart of Disruption — receive the Dalaran Sewer Key and recover the Arcane Mote inside the dungeon.
Important: the Grimy Key from Key to the City is not the dungeon key. The actual sewer entrance is unlocked by the Dalaran Sewer Key provided during Heart of Disruption.
Can Horde Enter Dalaran City After the Dungeon?
Yes. Completing Heart of Disruption unlocks a follow-up involving the Arcane Mote and Archmage Celindra. After completing that progression, Dalaran guards become neutral toward the Horde character.
This allows Horde players to move around the restored city safely. Not every NPC offers full services, but supplies, some trainers, stables and other limited city functions can become usable.

Lyn the Ignored is a real eighth boss and is not available automatically. Your group needs the Tome of Dalaran.
- Enter Shadowfang Keep.
- Defeat Archmage Arugal or enter a cleared instance.
- Loot the Black Tome from the table in Arugal's room.
- Travel to Ambermill in Silverpine Forest.
- Go inside the main building and find the Ley Line focus.
- Use the Black Tome near the Ley Line to create the Tome of Dalaran.
- Enter City of Dalaran.
- After Atrexis, continue through the northern sewer section toward the purple summoning rune.
- Use the Tome of Dalaran to summon Lyn the Ignored.
The Tome has been reported as reusable, so obtaining it is worthwhile if you intend to farm Lyn's loot.

City of Dalaran Dungeon Maps
The dungeon has two major sections: the Dalaran Sewers and the city proper.

Recommended Full Boss Route
City of Dalaran is not completely linear. A practical eight-boss route is:
- Atrexis the Grave Knight — Circle of Wills in the sewers.
- Lyn the Ignored — secret sewer room, if your group has the Tome of Dalaran.
- Arcane Anomaly — Krasus' Landing after reaching the city.
- Mana Devourer — outside Violet Hold; easy to miss.
- Fel Ancient — Runeweaver Square after removing its barrier.
- Unstable Sentinel — Magus Commerce Exchange.
- Arcanic Enigma — eastern / Path of Renewal area.
- Shade of the Archmage — Purple Parlor through the Violet Citadel portal.
Do not accidentally skip Mana Devourer. The dungeon can be progressed toward the final boss without killing it, so groups focused only on the main route can miss an entire boss loot table.
City of Dalaran Bosses
| Boss | Location | Main Mechanics |
|---|---|---|
| Atrexis the Grave Knight | Circle of Wills | Raise Dead, Disarm, Unholy Frenzy, Thrash |
| Lyn the Ignored | Secret sewer room | Shadow Bolt Volley, Curse of Thorns, Raise Dead |
| Arcane Anomaly | Krasus' Landing | Focal Blast, Arcane Bolt |
| Arcanic Enigma | Path of Renewal | Mana Burn adds, Manamorph, Silence, Manalings |
| Unstable Sentinel | Magus Commerce Exchange | Arcing Smash, Malfunction |
| Mana Devourer | Outside Violet Hold | Drain Vitality, Debilitate, Mana drain |
| Fel Ancient | Runeweaver Square | Entangle, Fel Timbers |
| Shade of the Archmage | Purple Parlor | Arcane Bolt, Bounding Mana, Arcane Explosion, Mass Polymorph, Evocation |
Atrexis the Grave Knight Strategy

Atrexis is the first boss and patrols near Kirin Tor Necromancers. Kill enough surrounding enemies before pulling so additional Raise Dead summons do not overwhelm the group.
Atrexis can Disarm the tank, repeatedly Raise Dead, use Thrash and Strike, and buff himself or nearby undead with Unholy Frenzy.
Let the tank secure skeletons before heavy AoE. Once the first add wave is controlled, burn the boss rather than letting Raise Dead accumulate.
Atrexis Loot
- Graveweave Bindings — Cloth Wrist
- Bonebinder's Signet — Ring
- Gravespike Repeater — Crossbow
Lyn the Ignored Strategy
Lyn is significantly more dangerous than the first sewer boss. He repeatedly uses Shadow Bolt Volley against the party and applies Curse of Thorns, which can punish characters when they attack.
Remove Curse of Thorns whenever your composition allows it. Shadow Bolt Volley can be outranged at long distance, giving ranged players additional room to reduce incoming damage.
Lyn also uses Raise Dead, so keep the skeleton population under control instead of tunneling the boss.
Lyn the Ignored Loot
- Cartilage Shapers — Leather Hands
- Bonepile Gaze — Shield
- Tendonscraper Dagger — Main-Hand Dagger
Arcane Anomaly Strategy

Arcane Anomaly's defining mechanic is Focal Blast, a rotating Arcane beam. Move with the safe side of the rotation instead of trying to finish casts through the beam.
The boss also uses Arcane Bolt and can hit the tank hard. Stay inside the intended platform area to avoid adding nearby enemies.
Arcane Anomaly Loot
- Ephemeral Grips — Cloth Hands
- Runemender's Seal — Ring
- Mana-Warped Chain Shirt — Mail Chest
Mana Devourer Strategy

Mana Devourer is outside Violet Hold and should be cleared before moving too far into the city.
Drain Vitality applies Arcane damage to the tank, while Debilitate hits the entire party and drains Mana. This creates a soft time limit for Mana-dependent groups.
Clear every nearby pack before engaging. Unkilled enemies in the area can join the fight.
Mana Devourer Loot
- Slitherwrap Girdle — Leather Waist
- Manascale Treads — Mail Feet
- Spine of the Devourer — Two-Hand Staff
Current Wowhead records also associate Refractory Scaleguards with Mana Devourer as well as Unstable Sentinel. Treat the duplicate source assignment as live-database data to recheck after release.
Fel Ancient Strategy

Fel Ancient is protected by a barrier. Speak with the relevant Kirin Tor NPCs around Runeweaver Square, including Grindle Firespark, to remove the protection.
Entangle roots players and deals damage over time. Fel Timbers creates dangerous green ground effects. The combination is the real threat: remove roots or use movement-immunity effects immediately if a pool appears beneath a rooted player.
Fel Ancient Loot
- Felbough Arm — Two-Hand Polearm
- Garb of Fallen Felbark — Leather Chest
- Blightleaf Rope — Cloth Waist
Unstable Sentinel Strategy

Unstable Sentinel uses Arcing Smash, a frontal attack, and Malfunction, a large pulsing AoE affecting players within roughly 25 yards.
The tank should face the Sentinel away from the group. Ranged players can remain outside Malfunction range; melee should move out when the cast begins. The boss can also be stunned before Malfunction completes.
Unstable Sentinel Loot
- Guardian's Dualblade — Two-Hand Axe
- Unstable Crystalline Shoulderpads — Leather Shoulders
- Refractory Scaleguards — Mail Legs
- Blueprint: Spinning Wheel — Tailoring blueprint
Arcanic Enigma Strategy

Arcanic Enigma starts with two Mana Phantoms. Kill or interrupt them immediately because Mana Burn can rapidly remove the healer's resources.
The boss uses Manamorph, an 8-second Magic-dispellable control effect, plus a close-range Silence. Keep the healer and ranged casters away from the boss.
Small Manalings continue to spawn during the encounter. Cleave them down without allowing the larger Mana Phantoms or boss mechanics to be ignored.
Arcanic Enigma Loot
- Violet Sorcerer's Robes — Cloth Chest
- Drape of Shifting Energy — Back
- Wand of Mana Concentration — Wand
Shade of the Archmage Strategy

Shade of the Archmage is the final boss. Speak with the appropriate Kirin Tor NPC near the Violet Citadel to gain access to the portal leading to the Purple Parlor.
The boss uses Arcane Bolt on the tank and periodically creates Bounding Mana, an Arcane projectile that travels outward and then returns. Move away from its path instead of stacking on the targeted player.
Arcane Explosion damages players within roughly 20 yards, so ranged characters should remain at maximum practical range.
When the Shade runs out of Mana, it casts Mass Polymorph followed by Evocation. Line-of-sight can help avoid the Polymorph, but do not drag the boss outside the room because the encounter can reset.
Shade of the Archmage Loot
- Archmagister's Faceted Pendant — Neck
- Violet Sorcerer's Mantle — Cloth Shoulders
- Ponderous Orb — Held in Off-Hand
- Arcane Mote — quest objective for Heart of Disruption
- Blueprint: Arcane Salvager — Enchanting blueprint

City of Dalaran Dungeon Quests
There are four primary dungeon quests for Alliance and four for Horde. All are available from level 24, so they can be prepared before you enter the official 28–33 dungeon range.
Alliance Quests
| Quest | Objective | Reward Choices |
|---|---|---|
| Heart of Disruption | Recover the Arcane Mote | Spellguard Pauldrons / Renewing Footpads / Defender of Dalaran |
| Starving Arcane | Kill 8 Seeking Remnants, 8 Saturated Remnants and 8 Mana Echoes | Fallen Guard's Pendant / Arcane Infused Rod |
| Power Overwhelming | Defeat Arcanic Enigma | Violet Sash / Runebound Gloves |
| A Green Sample | Collect the Fel Infused Blossom | Vine Pruner's Cloak / Thorn Protecting Girdle |
Horde Quests
| Quest | Objective | Reward Choices |
|---|---|---|
| Heart of Disruption | Recover the Arcane Mote | Battle Spaulders / Enchanted Sandals / Striking Staff |
| The Grave Knight | Defeat Atrexis the Grave Knight | Gravewalker Boots / Undead Knight's Bracers |
| Opportunistic Education | Recover The Founding of Dalaran from the library | Solid Gold Band / Larcenist's Belt |
| Source of Power | Collect 6 Cracked Sentry Cores | Unstable Power Core / Construct Cloak |
Where Is The Founding of Dalaran?
The book required for Opportunistic Education is in the Silver Enclave library area. From the central city route, look for the building to the left when facing the stairs toward the main Violet Citadel tower.
Go to the back of the library and check the rear wall area. Pick the book up before moving to the final boss so you do not need to backtrack across the city.
Important City of Dalaran Trash
City of Dalaran has several trash mechanics that matter more than their health pools.
- Kirin Tor Necromancers: repeatedly Raise Dead and buff undead with Unholy Frenzy. Kill them early.
- Mana Phantoms: cast Mana Burn. Interrupt or stun immediately.
- Seeking Remnants: can detect Stealth.
- Saturated Remnants: deal Arcane damage with their attacks and leave useful Mana-restoring fields after death.
- Phantasms: use Reflection Field, which can reflect spells. Stop casting into the shield.
- Fragmented Sentries: use Arcing Smash in front of them; tanks should face them away.
- Fallen Mages: use Frostbolt and are good line-of-sight pull targets.
- Arcane immunity: many dungeon enemies are immune to Arcane damage.
The Arcane immunity is particularly important for Arcane Mages and abilities such as Arcane Shot. Even Counterspell can become unreliable against Arcane-immune targets, so groups should not rely exclusively on Arcane-school utility.
A large amount of incoming damage in the city is also Arcane rather than ordinary physical damage. Protection Warriors and Paladins should not assume every apparent melee attack can be blocked normally.
Recommended Group and Preparation
A normal one tank, one healer and three DPS setup is appropriate.
Useful preparation includes Magic dispels for Manamorph, Curse removal for Lyn, reliable interrupts for Mana Burn, non-Arcane damage options, strong tank healing for Mana Devourer and Shade, and enough drinks for Mana-heavy trash sections.
There is no confirmed minimum item-level requirement. Enter with level-appropriate quest/dungeon gear, an updated weapon and current ability ranks.
Is City of Dalaran Worth Running?
Yes. City of Dalaran is one of the strongest pre-40 dungeon stops in Forever. A complete first run combines eight boss loot tables, four faction quests, profession blueprints, Kirin Tor progression and the permanent convenience of having your own Dalaran Sewer Key.
Horde receives an additional benefit because completing the access storyline allows safer exploration of Dalaran itself.
If you want every possible drop, bring the Tome of Dalaran so you can include Lyn the Ignored rather than completing a seven-boss run.
