WoW Forever Excavation Site: Wetlands Guide: Bosses, Loot, Quests and Location

WoW Forever Excavation Site: Wetlands Guide: Bosses, Loot, Quests and Location

Excavation Site: Wetlands is a new five-player World of Warcraft: Forever dungeon for levels 24-29, set at a mysterious excavation above Whelgar's Excavation in the Wetlands. Blizzard's preview describes strange mist, flashes of light and errant Titan constructs around a place that appears trapped in time, while the current beta client lists four encounters: Saltspine, Shadetooth, Highland Horror and Relic Guardian.

Short answer: the dungeon's level range, setting, five-player format, internal areas and current encounter names are known, but the live beta is still capped at level 20, so this level-24-29 dungeon is not yet playable in the current test phase. Exact entrance coordinates, boss abilities, dungeon quests and boss-specific loot are therefore not reliable enough to publish as final information yet.

Updated: September 24, 2026. This guide uses Blizzard-announced information and beta-client build 1.60.1.69977, and it leaves unverified mechanics, quests and loot unfilled rather than guessing.

Excavation Site: Wetlands Location and How to Get There

Blizzard places Excavation Site above the existing Whelgar's Excavation area in the Wetlands, Eastern Kingdoms. Whelgar's Excavation gives both factions a reliable geographic landmark, but the exact dungeon portal position and final approach have not yet been verified in playable beta content.

FactionRoute to the AreaCurrent Limitation
AllianceTravel through the Wetlands toward Whelgar's Excavation. Menethil Harbor provides the natural Alliance access point into the zone. The final climb or path from the outdoor excavation to the dungeon portal has not yet been confirmed.
HordeEnter the Wetlands from Arathi Highlands through the Thandol Span and continue toward Whelgar's Excavation. No Horde-specific shortcut or separate dungeon entrance has been announced.

Do not use coordinates from older Whelgar's Excavation quests as confirmed dungeon coordinates. Those coordinates point to the existing outdoor dig site and its quest NPCs, not necessarily to the new Forever instance portal.

Excavation Site Level Range and Group Size

Blizzard officially lists Excavation Site: Wetlands for levels 24 through 29. Current beta-client data marks the instance for five players and gives it a client finder reference level of 26, which sits near the middle of Blizzard's published bracket.

Dungeon DetailCurrent Information
Level Range24-29
Players5

LandmarkAbove Whelgar's Excavation
Client Finder Reference LevelLevel 26
Current Encounter Records4

The 24-29 range places Excavation Site between the first new Forever dungeons and City of Dalaran, which begins at level 28. It also overlaps with existing dungeons in the same general leveling band, including Blackfathom Deeps and Shadowfang Keep, giving mid-20s characters several group-content options.

What Is Happening at the Excavation Site?

The dungeon expands the familiar Wetlands archaeology theme into a new Titan-related mystery. Blizzard describes a site above Whelgar's Excavation with strange mist, flashes of light and errant Titan constructs, and frames it as the kind of discovery that would interest the Explorers' League.

Blizzard has also described the location as appearing to be trapped in time. That gives the dungeon a different identity from simply extending the existing outdoor Whelgar quest line: the site involves active Titan machinery and an unexplained phenomenon surrounding the excavation.

Whelgar's Excavation is already an established dwarven archaeological location, so Forever is using a familiar part of the Wetlands as the geographic anchor for new content rather than placing the dungeon in an unrelated part of the zone.

Excavation Site Map and Known Areas

The beta client already contains an Excavation Site map and four named subareas, but current public data does not establish a verified boss route or exact encounter positions. The area names still provide a useful picture of how the dungeon is divided internally.

AreaWhat Is Confirmed
Lost MarshNamed internal area in the current beta client.
Stalker's ThicketNamed internal area in the current beta client.
Site of the GuardianNamed internal area; its name may be thematically related to Relic Guardian, but the boss's exact position is not verified.
Lost Dig SiteNamed internal excavation area in the current beta client.

These names should not be treated as a confirmed linear route. Until the dungeon becomes playable after Blizzard raises the beta level cap, there is not enough evidence to say that groups will move through the four areas in this exact order or that a specific boss belongs to each one.

Excavation Site Bosses

The current Forever client lists four encounters for Excavation Site: Saltspine, Shadetooth, Highland Horror and Relic Guardian. Their names and current client order are useful for identifying the roster, but Blizzard has not yet published full encounter mechanics or confirmed that the client order is the final in-dungeon kill order.

BossVerified AbilitiesCurrent Loot Status
SaltspineNo verified boss abilities yet.0 confirmed boss-specific drops; beta-derived data currently identifies Saltspine as a Beast.
ShadetoothNo verified boss abilities yet.0 confirmed boss-specific drops; beta-derived data currently identifies Shadetooth as a Beast.
Highland HorrorNo verified boss abilities yet.0 confirmed boss-specific drops; beta-derived data currently identifies Highland Horror as a Beast.
Relic GuardianNo verified boss abilities yet.0 confirmed boss-specific drops; it is listed separately from the three Beast encounters.

Current beta-derived data identifies Saltspine, Shadetooth and Highland Horror as Beast encounters, with Relic Guardian as the fourth boss. That may matter for Beast-specific crowd control once the dungeon opens, but it does not reveal the bosses' actual ability sets, health values, encounter tuning or final strategy.

Saltspine

Saltspine is the first encounter name in the current Excavation Site client list. Abilities: no verified combat abilities, add phases, positioning requirements, interrupts or dispels have been documented from playable beta testing yet.

Loot: no boss-specific drop is currently confirmed for Saltspine. Beta-derived data identifies it as a Beast, but claims about poison attacks, cleaves, tank swaps or environmental effects remain speculation until the dungeon is playable.

Shadetooth

Shadetooth is the second encounter in the current client list. Abilities: no verified interrupt priority, crowd-control requirement, role mechanic or tested ability list is currently available.

Loot: no boss-specific drop is currently confirmed for Shadetooth. Beta-derived data identifies it as a Beast, but there is not yet enough tested information to publish a strategy.

Highland Horror

Highland Horror is included in the current four-boss roster. Abilities: the fight has not yet been documented through playable beta testing, so health values, spells, phases and positioning requirements remain unverified.

Loot: no boss-specific drop is currently confirmed for Highland Horror. Beta-derived data identifies it as a Beast, but that creature type alone does not establish how the encounter works.

Relic Guardian

Relic Guardian is the encounter most directly connected by name to the Titan archaeology theme. Abilities: no verified spell list, phases, adds, interrupt requirements or positioning mechanics are currently available.

Loot: no boss-specific drop is currently confirmed for Relic Guardian. The client also contains an internal area called Site of the Guardian, but that naming relationship does not prove the boss's exact position or final encounter order.

Excavation Site Confirmed Loot

No boss-specific Excavation Site loot has been reliably confirmed yet. The Forever client contains new gear in the relevant level range, but current indexed data does not safely connect specific items to Saltspine, Shadetooth, Highland Horror or Relic Guardian.

BossConfirmed Boss-Specific Drops
SaltspineNone confirmed yet
ShadetoothNone confirmed yet
Highland HorrorNone confirmed yet
Relic GuardianNone confirmed yet

This is an important distinction because some early Excavation Site pages circulate item names, rare-spawn claims and percentage drop rates that are not supported by the current indexed beta data or verified runs. Those items should not be presented as Excavation Site boss loot until their sources are observed in testing or reliably indexed.

Excavation Site Loot by Class

There is no reliable class loot filter to publish yet because no confirmed boss-specific drops are attached to the dungeon. Assigning unidentified level-24-29 items to Warrior, Mage, Hunter or another class would create a false loot table rather than help players plan their runs.

Once actual drops are recorded, a useful class filter can separate Strength gear, Agility gear, caster and healer pieces, tank items and weapons by the classes that can realistically use them at levels 24-29. Until then, there are no confirmed class-specific farming targets.

Excavation Site Quests

No dungeon-specific Excavation Site quests are currently confirmed in indexed Forever beta data. The surrounding Wetlands already contains older quests connected to Whelgar's Excavation, but those should not automatically be presented as quests for the new instanced dungeon.

For example, existing Wetlands content sends Alliance players to the outdoor excavation and introduces Whelgar's archaeological team. That establishes the location's history, but it does not prove those older objectives take place inside Excavation Site: Wetlands.

Blizzard has connected the new site thematically with the Explorers' League, but quest names, prerequisites, objectives and rewards need direct Forever data before they can be added to a dungeon checklist.

Excavation Site is a five-player dungeon, so one tank, one healer and three DPS is the safest default composition until the encounters are tested. Blizzard has not published a minimum item level, and there is currently no evidence supporting a specific gear-score requirement.

RolePractical Preparation
TankUse current level-appropriate armor, an appropriate defensive setup and trained ability ranks.
HealerBring drinks and keep healing spells current for the level-24-29 bracket.
DPSUse an up-to-date weapon or caster gear and bring the normal interrupt or crowd-control tools available to your class.
Whole GroupRepair before entering and carry normal food, drinks and level-appropriate consumables.

There is no reason to farm a dedicated pre-Excavation gear set based on untested encounter tuning. Normal quest and dungeon gear from the low-to-mid 20s is the sensible preparation baseline until direct testing shows that a particular encounter demands more.

Conclusion

Excavation Site: Wetlands is positioned as Forever's new dungeon for the mid-to-high 20s, expanding Whelgar's familiar archaeological setting into a Titan-focused five-player instance. Its level range, setting, internal area names and four current encounter records already define the basic structure of the dungeon.

The parts that matter most for an actual walkthrough — the exact entrance path, boss abilities, loot and quest objectives — still require direct testing after Blizzard raises the beta level cap above 20. Until then, the reliable approach is to plan around the confirmed 24-29 bracket and Wetlands location without treating unverified item lists or encounter strategies as established game data.
