The Altar of Corrosion is the permanent local progression tree for the Vaults of Atal'Utek in WoW Midnight. Unlock it through the Vaults questline on the Coiled Isle, give Corrosive Coins to Er'inye to gain Spirit Corrosion points, and spend those points on combat, survival, travel, gathering, and event traits. The Altar is also where the separate Corrosive Codex system is managed, but the two progression layers do not use the same resource.
This distinction fixes the most common source of bad advice: Corrosive Coins advance the Altar trait tree, while Corrosive Souls unlock Corrosive Codex powers. The Altar tree mainly improves the Coiled Isle and Vaults experience. Codex powers work in Midnight outdoor content and Delves, but not in raids, dungeons, Arena, or Battlegrounds.

Altar of Corrosion and Corrosive Codex Are Two Different Systems
Both interfaces are connected to Er'inye and the Altar, which is why early summaries often merge them into one talent tree. Treat them as two tabs with different goals: one improves the local Vaults loop through Spirit Corrosion traits, and the other provides selectable poison-themed powers through the Corrosive Codex.
| System or resource | How you obtain it | What it unlocks | Where it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corrosive Coins | Vaults activities, enhanced enemies, quests, and unlocked gathering sources | Spirit Corrosion points and separate vendor rewards | Altar trait progression and Vaults economy |
| Spirit Corrosion | Corrode your spirit through Er'inye by paying the current Coin cost | One allocatable point in the Altar tree | Coiled Isle and especially the Vaults of Atal'Utek |
| Corrosive Soul | Coiled Isle activities, Vaults, Prey, Lairs, and Bountiful Delves | Corrosive Codex powers; Souls can also be exchanged through Er'inye | Warband-wide Codex collection |
| Corrosive Codex powers | Unlock powers with Souls and select an active loadout | Up to two active poison-themed effects after the required collection progress | Midnight outdoor content and Delves |
Use the Corrosive Codex guide for all 12 powers, first-unlock choices, two-power combinations, and Codex troubleshooting. This page owns the Altar trait tree, its Coin progression, and the best order for its local upgrades.

How to Unlock the Altar of Corrosion
- Reach level 90 and unlock the Coiled Isle. Continue the Curse of Ula'tek campaign until you can enter the island's mountain.
- Begin the Vaults of Atal'Utek storyline. Follow the chain that starts with Vaults of Atal'Utek: Certain Doom and unlocks the local activity systems.
- Complete Vaults of Atal'Utek: One Coin Too Many. The quest sends you to find Er'inye and introduces Corrode Spirit.
- Complete Vaults of Atal'Utek: The Altar of Corrosion. Speak with Er'inye, corrode your spirit, and commune with the Altar.
- Open the Altar interface. Spend the Spirit Corrosion point created through the introductory interaction.
- Continue earning Corrosive Coins. Return to Er'inye when you have enough for the next point; the price rises as the tree advances.
Important: the Altar quest is also a prerequisite for the later Corrosive Gifts unlock. Delve Journey progress can award related resources, but it does not replace quest 98428.
Where to Find the Altar
The Altar and Er'inye are inside the Vaults of Atal'Utek rather than at the main outdoor hub of the Coiled Isle. Complete the story route first, then use the Vaults' internal travel network as it becomes available. You can enter the Vaults through three approaches:
- Gate of the Serpent's Eye: northern entrance in Venom's Rise, around
/way #2512 43.72 44.19. - Gate of the Western Fang: western entrance near the Forum, around
/way #2512 31.29 64.18. - Gate of the Eastern Fang: southwest of Tokka's Landing, around
/way #2512 45.67 64.90.
Flying is disabled inside the Vaults. Spectral travel, wind currents, and later Altar movement traits reduce the return trip. If the Altar is not interactable, check the unlock quest rather than searching for another outdoor copy.
How Spirit Corrosion Points Work
Corrosive Coins do not go directly into individual trait icons. Speak with Er'inye and use the available Corrode Spirit interaction to convert the required Coin amount into one Spirit Corrosion point. Open the Altar, place the point into an available node, and repeat when you can afford the next conversion.
- Costs escalate: later Spirit Corrosion points require more Coins than early points.
- Normal nodes use points: spend a point only after checking whether the next trait supports your actual activity.
- Choice nodes need quest items: obtaining and turning in the required relic opens the corresponding pair.
- Top Coin bonuses are automatic: Corrosive Spirit I–IV unlock from collected Corrosive Soul thresholds rather than normal point placement.
- Full completion matters: every point is eventually required for Fully Corroded, even if a utility node is not part of your first farming route.
Do not publish a fixed total Coin cost without verifying the current interface. The escalating price curve is the stable planning fact; individual costs are the part most likely to be adjusted.
Complete Altar of Corrosion Trait Tree
The tree combines permanent local utility with several choice nodes. The descriptions below focus on the decision each trait enables rather than turning changeable proc tuning into a permanent tier list.
| Branch | Trait | Effect and best use |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation | Venomous Hunt | Reveals venom-enhanced enemies; defeating them can release Volatile Venom for primary stat and additional Coins |
| Foundation | Ofi's Offerings | Adds a chance to find reagents for Ofi's Cauldron in Coiled Isle treasures |
| Foundation | Venomwalking | Reduces damage taken from venom pools by 75%; the strongest general navigation safety trait |
| Left | Venom Neutralization | Reduces damage from venom-enhanced enemies by 25% |
| Left choice | Surge Seniority / Spiritual Succession | Choose stronger ghostly support in Curse Surges or instant spirit resurrection on death in Atal'Utek |
| Left | Corroded Grounds | Allows Mining, Herbalism, Skinning, and Fishing in Atal'Utek to produce Corrosive Coins |
| Left | Slithering Secrets | Allows venom-enhanced enemies to drop Decrepit Keys for Decrepit Caches |
| Right | Spirit Guardian | Enables Amani spirits to assist you during combat in the Vaults |
| Right choice | Egg Specialist / Egg Evasion | Choose 100% more damage to eggs or 75% less damage from egg bursts |
| Right | Spirit Strikes | Adds more occasional spirit assistance during Vaults combat |
| Right | Venomous Sanctuary | Lets shrine offerings create temporary safe areas in Atal'Utek |
| Middle choice | Spirit Walk / Spectral Shipping | Choose a three-minute Windcaller Spirit Walk or additional spectral flight destinations |
| Middle choice | Glideways / Swift Steps | Choose more Spiritwing Feathers for vertical lifts or more Spiritwing Gusts for crossing gaps |
| Middle | Venom Coating | Gives abilities a chance to poison enemies on the Coiled Isle |
| Middle | Venom Ward | Reveals Wards that protect nearby allies from Poison effects |
| Middle | Volatility Overflowing | Increases the chance for venom-enhanced enemies to release Volatile Venom |
| Middle | Wondrous Wards | Adds an allied movement-speed bonus to activated Venom Wards |
| Middle | Venom Infusion | Raises the activation chance of Venom Coating by 50% |
Quest-Locked Choice Nodes and Required Items
Four choice nodes remain unavailable until you find a specific relic, accept its associated quest, and return it to Er'inye. The item is a gate, not a currency you spend repeatedly.
| Required item | Choice unlocked | Best default choice |
|---|---|---|
| Lost Med'jai Amulet | Surge Seniority or Spiritual Succession | Surge Seniority for repeatable surface events; Spiritual Succession while learning dangerous Vaults content |
| Eye of Szarith | Egg Specialist or Egg Evasion | Egg Specialist for faster objectives; Egg Evasion if egg bursts regularly kill you |
| Feather of Tok'jara | Spirit Walk or Spectral Shipping | Spectral Shipping for repeated farming routes; Spirit Walk for uninterrupted manual exploration |
| Mummified Lynx's Paw | Glideways or Swift Steps | Swift Steps is the general route choice; use Glideways when vertical access is your recurring obstacle |
Track which relic quests are complete before assuming the tree is bugged. A visible branch connection does not bypass its item requirement.
Corrosive Spirit Coin Bonuses
The four Corrosive Spirit milestones sit above the normal tree. They unlock automatically according to the number of Corrosive Souls collected and improve future Corrosive Coin income. They do not consume a normal Spirit Corrosion point.
| Milestone | Requirement | Displayed Coin bonus |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosive Spirit I | Collect 5 Corrosive Souls | 25% additional Corrosive Coins from all sources |
| Corrosive Spirit II | Collect 10 Corrosive Souls | 50% additional Corrosive Coins from all sources |
| Corrosive Spirit III | Collect 15 Corrosive Souls | 75% additional Corrosive Coins from all sources |
| Corrosive Spirit IV | Collect 20 Corrosive Souls | 100% additional Corrosive Coins from all sources |
This creates an important efficiency rule: progress the Soul collection alongside Coin farming instead of treating them as unrelated grinds. The milestone bonus improves the return from later Vaults sessions, but Souls should first be evaluated against the Codex powers you still need.
Best Altar of Corrosion Unlock Order
- Venomous Hunt: unlock the enemy and Coin feedback loop as early as the tree allows.
- Venomwalking: remove most venom-pool damage so travel and objectives become more consistent.
- Venom Neutralization: reduce damage from the same enhanced enemies you will farm for Coins and Volatile Venom.
- Spirit Guardian and Spirit Strikes: add passive help for solo Patrols, Strikes, and general Vault combat.
- Venom Coating and Venom Infusion: add reliable local damage after your defensive base is established.
- Spectral Shipping and Swift Steps: choose the general-purpose travel options when their relic nodes open.
- Corroded Grounds: move this earlier if you actively gather; otherwise it is a low-priority combat unlock.
- Slithering Secrets and Ofi's Offerings: add them when cache and cauldron rewards become an intentional farming goal.
- Finish remaining nodes: complete the tree for Fully Corroded and the connected meta-achievement.
This order favors compounding income, survival, and repeatable travel before niche collection effects. It is more efficient than choosing only damage because deaths, venom detours, and long return routes cost more time than a small combat proc saves.
Recommended Traits by Activity
| Goal | Prioritize | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Solo Vaults progression | Venomwalking, Venom Neutralization, Spirit Guardian, Spirit Strikes | Combines environmental defense with passive combat support |
| Corrosive Coin farming | Venomous Hunt, Volatility Overflowing, Corroded Grounds | Adds enhanced-enemy value and a gathering source |
| Temple Patrols and Strikes | Venom Coating, Venom Infusion, Spirit Strikes, Swift Steps | Balances damage with fast movement between objectives |
| Curse Surges | Surge Seniority, Venomous Hunt, Venom Neutralization | Improves surface-event support and enhanced-enemy farming |
| Exploration | Spectral Shipping, Swift Steps or Glideways, Venomwalking | Reduces travel time and environmental interruptions |
| Gathering | Corroded Grounds, Venomwalking, Spiritual Succession | Adds Coin drops while reducing risk on long solo routes |
| Caches and collections | Slithering Secrets, Ofi's Offerings, Venomous Hunt | Opens keys, cauldron reagents, and the enemies tied to them |
How to Farm Corrosive Coins Efficiently
- Unlock the Altar before beginning a long Coin session.
- Take Venomous Hunt and the survival traits that keep you moving.
- Complete Temple Patrols instead of killing unrelated enemies.
- Follow the cycle into Temple Strikes and stay for the resulting Temple Incursion.
- Kill venom-enhanced enemies and collect Volatile Venom when available.
- Gather Mining, Herbalism, Skinning, or Fishing nodes after Corroded Grounds is active.
- Complete limited quests and reward sources before pure repeatable farming.
- Delay cosmetic vendor spending until the Altar nodes required for your goal are funded.
The Vaults of Atal'Utek guide explains how Patrols activate Strikes, how two Strikes lead to an Incursion, and how to avoid missing event credit. That loop is more valuable than camping a single enemy location.
Fully Corroded Achievement and the Snake Title
Fully Corroded requires every talent point at the Altar of Corrosion and awards the title the Snake. It is also one of the requirements for Assault the Vault, the Vaults meta-achievement associated with the Venomous Coiler mount.
- Purchase enough Spirit Corrosion points to fill every normal node.
- Obtain and turn in all four relic items that unlock choice nodes.
- Allocate the available choice-node points; an unopened branch prevents completion.
- Check the achievement tracker after the final point rather than relying only on the visual tree.
- Do not confuse a complete Codex collection with a complete Altar tree.
Where Altar Traits Work
| Content | Altar trait value | Codex power value |
|---|---|---|
| Vaults of Atal'Utek | Primary intended content; most traits work directly with its hazards, travel, spirits, and events | Active as Midnight outdoor content |
| Coiled Isle surface | Selected traits affect venom, Curse Surges, enhanced enemies, treasures, and gathering | Active |
| Other Midnight outdoor zones | Most location-specific Altar traits provide little or no benefit | Active |
| Delves | Only effects whose tooltip permits the content should be expected to work | Active |
| Raids and dungeons | Do not treat the Altar as raid or Mythic+ character power | Inactive |
| Arena and Battlegrounds | No competitive PvP progression advantage | Inactive |
Altar of Corrosion Not Unlocking or Not Working
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Er'inye offers no Altar interaction | The Vaults introduction or One Coin Too Many is incomplete | Continue the Certain Doom chain and complete quests 97640 and 98428 |
| The Altar is visible but locked | You have not communed with it during the unlock quest | Track The Altar of Corrosion and complete both quest objectives |
| You have Coins but no talent point | Coins must first be converted through Er'inye | Use Corrode Spirit and pay the displayed current cost |
| A choice node cannot be selected | Its relic quest is incomplete | Obtain the required amulet, eye, feather, or paw and return it to Er'inye |
| Coin gathering does not work | Corroded Grounds is not unlocked or you are gathering outside Atal'Utek | Allocate the trait and use eligible professions in the specified area |
| An expected effect is inactive | The trait is location-specific or you entered excluded content | Read the trait tooltip and test it in the Vaults or Coiled Isle activity it names |
| Codex powers are missing | The separate Corrosive Gifts questline is incomplete | Finish the Altar prerequisite, then use the dedicated Codex unlock route |
| Fully Corroded did not complete | A point or quest-locked node remains unavailable | Inspect every branch and all four relic requirements |
Common Altar of Corrosion Mistakes
- Combining the Altar and Codex into one tree: Coins, Spirit Corrosion, Souls, and Codex powers perform different jobs.
- Following the old random-reroll model: the current Codex uses a choice collection, while the Altar has its own point tree.
- Unlocking damage before basic safety: Venomwalking usually saves more time during early exploration.
- Ignoring income traits: Venomous Hunt and Corroded Grounds can compound later Coin farming.
- Assuming every choice node is immediately available: four pairs require specific relic quests.
- Hardcoding an old total cost: verify the escalating Coin price shown by Er'inye.
- Buying cosmetics too early: progression traits should come first if you still use the Vaults regularly.
- Expecting raid or Mythic+ power: the system is designed for local outdoor progression and related content.
- Repeating the entire research on every alt: inspect account and Warband behavior before duplicating work.
Altar of Corrosion Progression Summary
Complete One Coin Too Many and The Altar of Corrosion, convert Corrosive Coins into Spirit Corrosion through Er'inye, and allocate points into the local Vaults tree. Start with Venomous Hunt, venom protection, and combat support; add movement and gathering traits when they improve your repeatable route. Finish all four relic quests to open the choice nodes, collect Corrosive Souls for the automatic Coin milestones and the separate Codex system, then complete every Altar point for Fully Corroded and the Snake title.
