Alcaz Island Prison is a new World of Warcraft: Forever dungeon for levels 48-53 on Alcaz Island, far off the northeastern side of Dustwallow Marsh. The island has existed since original WoW, but its prison was never a normal explorable dungeon. Forever finally opens the facility while the Defias Brotherhood and naga are fighting inside, turning one of Classic Azeroth's long-standing mystery locations into late-level group content.
Short answer: Alcaz Prison fits into the late-40s and early-50s leveling route, alongside Maraudon and before the higher end of the Sunken Temple and Blackrock Depths progression window. Forever significantly reduces XP from ordinary dungeon enemies while increasing the experience awarded by dungeon quests, so the most valuable run should be the one where you arrive prepared with every available Alcaz objective rather than repeatedly grinding the instance for mob XP.
Updated: September 24, 2026. The 48-53 level range, Alcaz Island location and Defias-versus-naga premise are established. Alcaz Prison is not currently available with a documented boss roster in the public Forever beta data, so boss names, abilities and boss-specific loot are listed only when they can be tied specifically to the new dungeon.
Alcaz Island Prison Location and How to Get There
Alcaz Prison is on Alcaz Island, far northeast of Dustwallow Marsh in Kalimdor. The island itself is an established location, but the exact Forever dungeon doorway and final access route have not yet been documented in a playable public build, so the routes below take each faction to the correct island approach rather than inventing entrance coordinates.
| Faction | Route | What to Know |
|---|---|---|
| Alliance | Use Theramore as the main Dustwallow travel hub, then move toward the northeastern coastline and Alcaz Island. | Theramore is the most natural Alliance staging point because the island lies offshore from the eastern side of Dustwallow Marsh. |
| Horde | Travel from Brackenwall Village across Dustwallow Marsh toward the eastern coast, then continue toward Alcaz Island. | The trip is longer than the Alliance approach, so grouping before the final island crossing will be more convenient. |
No dedicated ferry, faction-exclusive entrance or teleport to Alcaz Prison has been confirmed. Do not follow third-party guides that claim a specific boat route or entrance unless that access method appears in the current Forever build.
Alcaz Prison Level Range and Place in Progression
Blizzard places Alcaz Prison at levels 48-53. This makes it the seventh of Forever's nine new launch dungeons and positions it after Krol'dok Stronghold at 40-45 but before Blackmaw Hold at 55-60.
| Dungeon Detail | Current Information |
|---|---|
| Level Range | 48-53 |
| Location | Alcaz Island, Dustwallow Marsh |
| Continent | Kalimdor |
| Main Conflict | Defias Brotherhood vs. naga |
| Position in New Dungeon Progression | After Krol'dok Stronghold and before Blackmaw Hold |
| Formal Minimum Item Level | None published |
The bracket overlaps with Maraudon's higher-level wings and the beginning of the Sunken Temple and Blackrock Depths progression window. Alcaz therefore works as another option for characters moving through the difficult transition from the upper 40s into early level-50 content.
Alcaz Prison Map and Route
The practical route begins with reaching Alcaz Island itself. The full Forever prison layout has not been published yet, so there is no reliable boss-by-boss map path to reproduce, but the geography of the island makes preparation for the trip straightforward.
- Reach Dustwallow Marsh through your normal faction travel network.
- Alliance players should stage from Theramore; Horde players can begin from Brackenwall Village and cross the zone toward the eastern coastline.
- Move toward Alcaz Island northeast of the mainland.
- Group before entering the prison area rather than sending individual party members through hostile island territory separately.
- Once the Forever entrance is exposed in a playable build, follow the new prison route rather than assuming older outdoor Alcaz locations are part of the instance.
This final point matters because legacy Alcaz Island already contains old NPCs, naga and quest objectives. Their outdoor positions do not identify the new dungeon entrance, boss rooms or internal route.

View All Dungeons ServicesWhy Alcaz Island Matters in Warcraft Lore
Alcaz Island has been associated with one of original World of Warcraft's longest-running mysteries. The prison was linked to rumors that the Defias Brotherhood used it to hold important nobles for ransom, including King Varian Wrynn during the storyline surrounding his disappearance from Stormwind.
Blizzard deliberately referenced that history when revealing the Forever dungeon. The developers noted that players could visit Alcaz Island in the original game but could not properly explore the prison itself. Forever turns that inaccessible background location into actual playable group content.
The new conflict is not simply the Defias continuing to operate an uncontested prison. Blizzard describes the Defias and naga as fighting one another inside, which means the party enters a facility already destabilized by two hostile groups.
That premise also matches the island's older history with the Strashaz naga. The existing Forever database still contains the legacy quest I See Alcaz Island In Your Future..., which sends players to Alcaz Island to collect Bloodkelp from Strashaz naga. That quest confirms the naga's established presence on the island, but it should not be treated as a new Alcaz Prison dungeon quest.
Alcaz Island Prison Bosses and Mechanics
No verified Alcaz Prison boss roster has been published or discovered in the currently available Forever data. Blizzard has revealed the dungeon's setting, level range and central Defias-versus-naga conflict, but individual encounters have not yet been identified. This means that any guide currently presenting named Alcaz Prison bosses with exact health values, abilities or strategies is using information that has not been verified against the playable Forever dungeon.
| Boss | Abilities | Loot |
|---|---|---|
| Boss roster not yet revealed | No Forever-specific boss abilities have been verified. Exact spells, phases, summons, interrupts and positioning requirements remain unknown. | No boss-specific Alcaz Prison drops have been discovered or officially published yet. |
Several third-party pages already publish complete boss lists with names such as wardens, prisoners and naga commanders, together with exact health values, spells and drop tables. Those details are not supported by Blizzard's reveal, the current Wowhead dungeon information or beta loot trackers and should not be presented as confirmed Forever content.
Doctor Weavil is a good example of why older Alcaz information has to be handled carefully. He is historically associated with Alcaz Island and appears in legacy content, but that does not make him a confirmed boss of the new Forever prison dungeon. His old abilities and rewards should likewise not be copied into the Alcaz Prison boss table unless the Forever version of the dungeon actually uses him.
Alcaz Island Prison Loot
No boss-specific Alcaz Prison drops can currently be tied to verified Forever encounters. Current Forever loot trackers have not discovered a boss or dungeon-specific drop table for Alcaz Prison, and matching an item's level requirement to the 48-53 bracket is not enough to establish that it drops here.
This also means there is no legitimate class farming table yet. A useful loot guide needs a confirmed item, its actual boss or dungeon source and enough stat information to determine which builds want it. Until those sources exist, assigning hypothetical rings, weapons or armor to Warrior, Mage, Rogue or another class would create false farming targets.
Forever's broader dungeon itemization does make Alcaz worth checking again once its drops become available. Blizzard has re-examined dungeon drops across the game, added hundreds of new items and upgraded unique dungeon boss items to blue quality. The important part for this guide is connecting those redesigned rewards to the correct Alcaz encounters instead of filling the page with unrelated level-50 equipment.
Alcaz Island Prison Quests
A dedicated Forever dungeon quest package for Alcaz Prison has not yet been published. Current dungeon-quest references do not provide an Alcaz Prison quest list, and existing quests involving Alcaz Island should not automatically be listed as prison quests because several were designed for the outdoor island long before the new dungeon existed.
The clearest example is I See Alcaz Island In Your Future.... It sends players to collect Bloodkelp from Strashaz naga on Alcaz Island as part of older endgame quest progression, but its objective does not establish that the player enters Alcaz Prison.
The distinction will be especially important in Forever because Blizzard has reduced experience from ordinary dungeon enemies while significantly increasing the experience awarded by dungeon quests. For Alcaz Prison, the optimal first run should therefore begin after checking which new dungeon objectives are available at your level and faction once the quest package becomes testable.
Once those quests are exposed, the useful checklist should identify the starting NPC, prerequisite chain, faction availability, objective, quest item and reward so the group can complete them during one route through the prison.
Recommended Group Composition and Minimum Gear
Blizzard has not published an Alcaz-specific minimum item level or mandatory class setup. For normal five-player dungeon planning, the safest provisional baseline is the traditional one-tank, one-healer and three-DPS structure with current quest or dungeon equipment for your level. This is preparation advice rather than a confirmed Alcaz encounter requirement.
| Role | Preparation | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | Current defensive gear, trained abilities and an appropriate tank weapon or shield setup. | Maintain reliable threat and avoid entering late-level content with severely outdated armor. |
| Healer | Current healing ranks, sufficient drinks and normal Mana consumables. | Be prepared for the higher incoming damage typical of late-40s and early-50s elite content. |
| DPS | Current weapons or caster gear with interrupts and crowd control available. | Keep interrupts, crowd control and defensive utility ready for humanoid and caster-heavy pulls. |
| Whole Group | Repair gear, clear bag space and bring food, drinks and normal level-appropriate consumables. | The island location makes forgetting basic supplies more inconvenient than in a dungeon located beside a major city. |
There is currently no verified reason to farm a specific gear score before entering Alcaz Prison. Until the dungeon itself is available for testing, reasonably current level-appropriate equipment is the only safe recommendation; final gearing advice should be based on the actual trash and boss damage found in the playable build.
Should You Farm Alcaz Prison for XP?
Alcaz Prison should be treated primarily as a quest-and-loot run rather than a dungeon-grinding replacement for outdoor leveling. Blizzard has reduced experience from ordinary dungeon enemies in Forever while significantly increasing the experience awarded by dungeon quests.
That makes the first well-prepared clear especially valuable. Enter with every available Alcaz objective, complete the dungeon for its quests and boss rewards, then decide whether another run is worthwhile because you still need a particular item rather than because you expect strong trash XP.
At levels 48-53, this matters more than it does in early dungeons because the same character also has access to high-level Maraudon wings, Sunken Temple, the beginning of Blackrock Depths and substantial outdoor questing. Repeating Alcaz without a loot goal may therefore be less efficient than moving on to another quest hub or dungeon with unfinished quests.
Conclusion
Alcaz Island Prison turns a location that Classic players could visit but never properly explore as a normal dungeon into one of Forever's late-level instances. Its 48-53 range places it at an important point in progression, while the conflict between the Defias and naga gives the prison a purpose beyond nostalgia for the Varian Wrynn mystery.
The best way to approach the dungeon is to treat it as part of a broader late-40s and early-50s route: reach Dustwallow prepared, collect every available dungeon objective before entering and use repeat runs for specific rewards rather than raw mob experience. Boss strategies, ability lists and class loot targets should only be added once they can be attached to actual Forever encounters, not old Alcaz NPCs or invented pre-release boss lists.
