The WoW Forever beta now has a level-30 cap, which changes Priest progression significantly compared with the old level-20 snapshot. Shadow can reach Vampiric Embrace and a 21-point talent such as Silence, Discipline can reach Penance, Holy can already reach Binding Heal, and every Priest now learns Divine Spirit at level 30. Blizzard has also published its full Priest class deep dive and shipped additional beta fixes: Renew can critically heal, Power Word: Shield can refresh an existing shield when Weakened Soul is absent, Devouring Plague can critically strike, Shadow Weaving now applies reliably, and Inner Focus no longer gives its critical-strike bonus to periodic effects. Shadowform and Shadow Word: Death are still above the current cap, so level-60 builds remain projections rather than tested endgame setups.
Priest in one sentence: Shadow is now our safest general solo-leveling path at the level-30 cap, Discipline is the most natural dungeon-healing progression because Penance is reachable now, and Holy remains a dedicated healing alternative with Binding Heal already available.
In the current WoW Forever Class Tier List, Priest is A tier overall, B tier for leveling and S tier in PvP. Discipline and Holy are both A-tier healer projections. The September 29 level-60 simulation snapshot places Shadow at about 615 DPS, but that snapshot predates the October 1 level-cap update and is not a verified level-30 or final raid ranking.
What Is the Best Priest Spec in WoW Forever?
Priest now has enough talent points at level 30 for each tree to show a much clearer identity. Shadow is the strongest general solo recommendation because Spirit Tap, Mind Flay, Vampiric Embrace and stronger Shadow talents reduce downtime while improving kill speed. Discipline becomes a complete early dungeon-healing path through Penance, while Holy gains Binding Heal before the current cap and remains focused on flexible direct and group healing.
| Goal | Best current choice | Why | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 10-30 solo leveling | Shadow | Spirit Tap, Mind Flay, Vampiric Embrace and Shadow damage provide the smoothest current solo path while retaining normal Priest healing tools. | High at current cap |
| Dungeon leveling as healer | Discipline | Meditation, shield support and the 21-point Penance milestone give Discipline excellent Mana efficiency and flexible healing. | High |
| Dedicated healing | Holy / Discipline | Holy emphasizes direct and group healing; Discipline emphasizes absorbs, Mana efficiency and Penance. | High conceptually |
| Dungeon DPS | Shadow | Mind Blast, Mind Flay, Shadow Word: Pain, Devouring Plague and Vampiric Embrace provide damage plus useful self/group recovery. | High at level 30 |
| Projected raid DPS | Shadow | The September 29 simulation snapshot placed Shadow at roughly 615 DPS, but level-60 raids are not playable and later tuning can change the result. | Low-Medium |
| PvP | Shadow / Discipline | Psychic Scream, Fear Ward, dispels, shields, Mana tools, racial spells and Silence give Priest one of the strongest current control/utility packages. | Medium-High |
Best Level 30 Priest Build: Shadow Leveling
At the current level-30 cap, a deep Shadow route is now more useful than the old level-20 Wand/Spirit Tap hybrid as the main leveling recommendation. Wands still matter for Mana-efficient finishing, but level 30 gives Shadow access to Mind Flay, improved Shadow damage, Vampiric Embrace and a 21-point choice. The route below is an editorial leveling path using the current talent structure rather than a claim that Blizzard has designated one mandatory build.
| Level | Talent | Rank | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10-14 | Spirit Tap | 5/5 | Improves Spirit-based Mana recovery after kills and remains one of Shadow's most important leveling tools. |
| 15-17 | Shadow Affinity | 3/3 | Reduces Shadow threat, particularly useful once Mind Blast and dungeon damage become more important. |
| 18-19 | Improved Shadow Word: Pain | 2/2 | Improves one of the spells used on nearly every durable leveling target. |
| 20 | Mind Flay | 1/1 | Gives Shadow a Mana-efficient channel and strong ranged slow. |
| 21-22 | Improved Mind Flay | 2/2 | Improves Mind Flay's damage and range while reducing some of its slowing strength. |
| 23-24 | Improved Mind Blast | 2/5 | Shortens access to one of Shadow's strongest direct-damage spells. |
| 25 | Vampiric Embrace | 1/1 | The new 16-point milestone gives 30 seconds of healing from your Shadow damage on a 1-minute cooldown. |
| 26-28 | Shadow Weaving | 3/3 | Builds your own Shadow damage and was fixed on October 1 so it can no longer fail to apply. |
| 29 | Improved Fade | 1/2 | Useful utility point for threat control while opening the final current-cap choice. |
| 30 | Silence | 1/1 | Gives Shadow a real spell interrupt/control tool for dungeons and PvP. |
Simple level-30 leveling loop: use Power Word: Shield only when the pull justifies its Mana cost, use Vampiric Embrace on tougher targets, apply Shadow Word: Pain, cast Mind Blast, fill with Mind Flay, add Devouring Plague when the target will live long enough, and finish with your wand when spending more Mana is inefficient.
Alternative: Discipline with Penance
Discipline is now a genuine level-30 alternative rather than only a future projection. Spending all 21 normal talent points in Discipline can reach Penance, the tree's 21-point milestone. Penance channels over 2 seconds on a 12-second cooldown and can either damage an enemy or heal an ally. Prioritize talents that support Power Word: Shield, Meditation, Mana efficiency and Soul Warding on the way down the tree. This route is especially strong if you level primarily by healing dungeons but still want enough damage to quest between groups.
Shadow Priest Leveling Path After Level 30
Level 30 is now the playable beta cap, but it still stops just before several important Shadow milestones. Shadow Word: Death arrives as a baseline Priest spell at level 32, deeper Shadow talents strengthen Devouring Plague and execute damage, and Shadowform remains the 31-point capstone reached around level 40 without additional Legacy talent acceleration.
| Milestone | Standard level | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Mind Flay | 20 | Core Mana-efficient Shadow filler and ranged slow. |
| Vampiric Embrace | 25 | 16-point milestone that converts part of your Shadow damage into party recovery for 30 seconds. |
| Silence / Row 5 choice | 30 | Current cap can reach a 21-point Shadow talent, giving PvP/dungeon control or starting deeper damage utility. |
| Shadow Word: Death | 32 | New baseline execute-style Shadow spell with backlash if the target survives. |
| Devouring Contagion | 30+ | Reduces Devouring Plague Mana cost and can transfer the plague to a nearby enemy when the target dies. |
| Early Demise | 35+ | Improves Shadow Word: Death critical-strike chance against targets below 20% Health. |
| Shadowform | 40 | Halves the Mana cost of Shadow spells, improves Shadow critical-damage scaling and defines the endgame Shadow playstyle. |
Do not put every damage-over-time spell on every normal quest enemy. Shadow Word: Pain and Devouring Plague are strongest when enough of their duration will actually tick. On low-health targets, a shorter Mind Blast, Mind Flay and wand sequence is often more Mana-efficient.

Priest received one of the more substantial class redesigns in Forever. Blizzard's September 30 class deep dive confirmed broader baseline access to iconic Priest spells, major talent changes in all three trees and a complete re-evaluation of race-specific Priest spells. The September 24 and October 1 beta builds then fixed several important healing and Shadow interactions.
| Spell / talent | Current Forever behavior | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fear Ward | Baseline for every Priest at level 20, regardless of race. | Dwarf is no longer mandatory solely for Fear Ward. |
| Devouring Plague | Baseline for every Priest at level 20. The October 1 build fixed it so it can correctly critically strike. | Every Priest can use the damage/self-healing tool; it is no longer Undead-exclusive. |
| Divine Spirit | Baseline Priest ability learned at level 30. | The current beta cap can now train it without spending Discipline talent points. |
| Renew | Can critically heal. Renew effects from multiple Priests can coexist on the same target. | Critical Strike has more healing value than in original Classic and multiple Priests interfere less with one another. |
| Power Word: Shield | Can overwrite an existing Power Word: Shield as long as the target does not have Weakened Soul. | You no longer have to wait for an old shield to be fully consumed before refreshing it. |
| Prayer of Healing | Heals the target's party, including pets, rather than always healing the Priest's own party. | Makes group-healing targeting more flexible. |
| Fade | Its threat-reduction effect is doubled in Forever. | More reliable threat control for healing and high-threat Shadow casts. |
| Penance | 21-point Discipline milestone. 2-second channel, 12-second cooldown, damages an enemy or heals an ally. | Discipline has a real signature active spell at the current beta cap. |
| Binding Heal | 16-point Holy milestone that heals the Priest and a friendly target together. | Holy can already use it at the level-30 cap. |
| Prayer of Mending | 31-point Holy milestone that can jump between party or raid members until it heals five times. | Important future raid tool, but still above the current cap. |
| Inner Focus | Reduces the next spell's Mana cost by 100% and increases critical effect chance by 25% only if the spell is non-periodic and can critically affect its target. | After October 1, do not use its crit bonus expecting it to boost periodic effects such as Renew. |
| Shadowform | Allows non-healing spells, halves Shadow spell Mana costs and increases Shadow critical-damage bonus, but prevents healing spells. | Major level-40 Shadow milestone and the core fix for long-fight Mana pressure. |
| Shadow Word: Death | New baseline Priest spell at level 32; deals instant Shadow damage and causes backlash if it does not kill the target. | Important execute-style tool, but not available at the current level-30 cap. |
Another important leveling change is that wands no longer gain extra damage from Spell Power. Wand Specialization is still useful and wands remain efficient finishers, but compare leveling wands primarily by their actual weapon DPS and useful item stats instead of assuming a Spell Power upgrade also increases wand shots.
Discipline Priest: Shields, Penance and Holy Damage
Discipline is now fully meaningful at the current cap because level 30 provides exactly enough normal talent points to reach Penance. The tree remains centered on Mana efficiency and shielding, but Forever adds a much clearer active healing and Holy-damage identity.
- Soul Warding: the 16-point milestone reduces Power Word: Shield cooldown and Mana cost. It requires Improved Power Word: Shield.
- Meditation: substantially increases the amount of Spirit-based Mana regeneration that continues while casting.
- Mental Strength: now increases Intellect rather than simply increasing maximum Mana by a percentage.
- Penance: can heal an ally or damage an enemy. Offensive Penance does not create Retail-style Atonement healing.
- Renewed Hope: improves critical healing against targets affected by Weakened Soul and helps reduce Weakened Soul through direct healing.
- Divine Aegis: qualifying critical heals create an additional absorb shield.
- Power in Light / Holy Precision: support a Smite, Holy Fire and Penance damage path, with Holy Precision specifically helping Holy spell hit chance.
For level-30 dungeon healing, keep Power Word: Shield for predictable pressure rather than casting it blindly on every player. Use efficient direct healing for normal damage, Renew when its duration is useful, Penance for fast targeted recovery, Dispel Magic and Cure Disease when mechanics require them, and save Psychic Scream for emergencies where scattering enemies will not create a worse pull.
Holy Priest: Binding Heal, Renew and Flexible Healing
Holy remains Priest's dedicated broad healing tree. At the current beta cap, its major new playable addition is Binding Heal, while Prayer of Mending remains a future level-40 capstone. Renew's ability to critically heal and the redesign of several Holy talents also make the tree materially different from Classic.
| Tool | Best use |
|---|---|
| Flash Heal | Fast emergency direct healing when speed matters more than efficiency. |
| Heal / Greater Heal | Efficient or larger direct healing depending on rank and incoming damage. |
| Renew | Movement-friendly healing over time; can now critically heal in Forever. |
| Binding Heal | Heals both you and one friendly target and is reachable at the current level-30 cap. |
| Prayer of Healing | Heals the target's party and its pets, making target selection important. |
| Prayer of Mending | Future 31-point talent for repeated reactive healing across nearby party or raid members. |
| Litany of Light | Rewards alternating different useful healing spells rather than repeating one spell indefinitely. |
The current ExpCarry healer ranking places both Discipline and Holy in A tier rather than declaring Priest the single uncontested best healer. Restoration Druid currently leads the level-20/early-beta healer snapshot, but encounter design, level-30 tuning and eventual level-60 raids can reorder the healing meta significantly.
Shadow Priest: Level 30 Damage, Mana and Current DPS Signal
Shadow has progressed much further than it had at the previous level-20 cap. Mind Flay is established, Vampiric Embrace is reachable, Shadow Weaving can be built up reliably, and a full 21-point Shadow investment can reach Silence or another Row 5 choice. Shadowform is still not available until level 40, so current Shadow remains a pre-Shadowform version of the final specialization.
Shadow Weaving now benefits only the casting Priest rather than functioning as the old raid-wide Shadow vulnerability. The October 1 build also fixed an issue where Shadow Weaving could fail to apply. Do not value a Shadow Priest as a Warlock damage amplifier using old Classic logic.
Current simulation signal: ExpCarry's September 29 snapshot lists Shadow Priest at about 615 DPS, sixth in that particular level-60 simulation set and inside its A-tier simulation band. The snapshot predates the October 1 level-cap increase and is not a live raid log, so it should be treated as directional theorycraft rather than a final DPS ranking.
Simple Shadow Priority at Level 30
- Keep Power Word: Fortitude and Inner Fire active.
- Use Power Word: Shield before dangerous pulls when its Mana cost is justified.
- Use Vampiric Embrace on durable targets or difficult pulls when its healing will matter.
- Apply Shadow Word: Pain to targets that will survive long enough for the DoT to pay off.
- Use Mind Blast for direct damage once threat is controlled.
- Use Devouring Plague on durable targets where both its damage and self-healing are valuable.
- Channel Mind Flay as your Shadow filler and slow.
- Use Silence when stopping a dangerous cast is more important than another damage global.
- Finish with the wand when conserving Mana is more efficient than casting again.
Can a Shadow Priest Heal Dungeons?
Yes, especially at the current level-30 cap. Shadowform is not available until level 40, so a level-30 Shadow Priest still has unrestricted access to normal Priest healing spells. In lower-level dungeons, a Shadow-leveling Priest with appropriate healing gear, enough Mana and sensible pulls can heal successfully without respeccing.
That does not make Shadow equivalent to a dedicated Discipline or Holy healer. Discipline has better Mana/shield support and Penance, while Holy can invest more heavily in healing throughput and Binding Heal. For difficult pulls or content at the upper end of the current beta, a dedicated healer allocation remains safer.
Priest Race Spells: Fear Ward, Devouring Plague and Racial Abilities
The most important racial-spell change is that Fear Ward and Devouring Plague are no longer racial Priest spells. Blizzard officially made both baseline for every Priest at level 20. Each playable Priest race still keeps two separate Priest-specific racial spells of its own.
| Race | Level 10 Priest spell | Level 20 Priest spell |
|---|---|---|
| Human | Divine Grace | Feedback |
| Dwarf | Desperate Prayer | Chastise |
| Night Elf | Starshards | Elune's Grace |
| Gnome | Confounding Flash | Contingency Plan |
| Undead | Touch of Weakness | Dark Sacrifice |
| Troll | Hex of Weakness | Shadowguard |
September 24 also fixed several racial interactions: Contingency Plan can critically heal, Starshards correctly gains pushback resistance from Twilight Focus, and Dark Sacrifice no longer breaks crowd control that breaks on damage. Its tooltip also correctly states that Mana gained scales with Spirit.
Gnome Priest
Gnome Priest is new in WoW Forever. Confounding Flash briefly confuses nearby enemies, while Contingency Plan places a ward on an ally that triggers an absorb and heal-over-time when the target drops below 35% Health. Combined with Eureka!, Expansive Mind and Escape Artist, Gnome is currently one of the strongest all-around Alliance Priest choices, although final level-60 racial tuning is not settled.
Priest Races in WoW Forever
Priest remains available to four Alliance races and two Horde races. Skyborne cannot currently be Priests. Because Fear Ward and Devouring Plague are baseline, race choice should now be based on the complete racial toolkit rather than one famous Classic Priest spell.
| Faction | Priest races | Current note |
|---|---|---|
| Alliance | Human, Dwarf, Night Elf, Gnome | Gnome Priest is new in Forever and currently has one of the strongest general utility/Mana packages. |
| Horde | Undead, Troll | Undead currently offers particularly strong leveling, Mana and PvP utility through its normal and Priest-specific racials. |
| Skyborne | Not available | Priest is not included in either announced Skyborne class list. |
Current general recommendation: Gnome is a strong Alliance all-around option, while Undead is a strong Horde option. Human, Dwarf, Night Elf and Troll still have content-specific advantages, so this should not be treated as a permanent race tier list before level-60 tuning stabilizes.
Use our WoW Forever racial abilities guide and race/class combinations guide for the complete racial toolkit.
Best Professions for Priest
Priest is particularly well suited to professions that provide cloth gear, caster items and Mana support. The current level-30 item pool also makes Tailoring unusually relevant across all three Priest trees.
| Profession pair | Best for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tailoring + Enchanting | General caster progression | Strong cloth crafting, caster gear and early wand access. Remember that wands no longer gain damage from Spell Power. |
| Herbalism + Alchemy | Leveling / healing / Mana | Mana potions and other consumables reduce downtime and support dungeon healing. |
| Mining + Engineering | PvP / utility | Engineering tools complement Priest crowd control and defensive options. |
Do not copy an Era, TBC or Wrath Priest BiS list into Forever. The game changes itemization, profession recipes, racial design and class scaling. At level 30, healers generally value useful healing/spell stats, Spirit and Mana support, while Shadow puts more emphasis on Spell/Shadow damage and appropriate Hit. Blizzard has not established a final level-60 Forever stat priority or boss hit cap yet.
If you want to skip part of the 1-60 route after launch, our WoW Forever Leveling Boost can be configured for a Priest or another alt.
WoW Forever Priest FAQ
Is Priest good in WoW Forever?
Yes. Priest is currently A tier overall in our class ranking and S tier for PvP. Discipline and Holy are both A-tier healing options, while Shadow has a much stronger current level-60 simulation signal than the older September 21 version of this article showed.
What is the best Priest leveling build?
At the current level-30 cap, Shadow is our safest general solo recommendation. Spirit Tap, Mind Flay and Vampiric Embrace give it a more complete leveling loop than at level 20. Discipline is the better choice if most of your leveling comes from healing dungeons.
What is the best Priest DPS spec?
Shadow is the Priest DPS tree. The September 29 simulation snapshot places it at about 615 DPS, but the result is a level-60 simulation rather than live raid evidence and predates the October 1 cap increase.
What is the best Priest healing spec?
Both Holy and Discipline are valid. Discipline has excellent Mana efficiency, shields and Penance; Holy has a wider direct/group-healing focus and can already reach Binding Heal. Final raid encounter design will decide which is stronger for a particular assignment.
Do all Priests get Fear Ward?
Yes. Blizzard officially made Fear Ward a baseline Priest spell learned at level 20 regardless of race.
Do all Priests get Devouring Plague?
Yes. Devouring Plague is baseline for every Priest at level 20, and the October 1 beta build fixed it so it can correctly critically strike.
What does Penance do?
Penance is the 21-point Discipline milestone. It channels over 2 seconds and either damages an enemy or heals an ally, with a 12-second cooldown. Offensive Penance does not automatically heal allies through an Atonement system.
Can you heal in Shadowform?
No. Shadowform allows non-healing spells but prevents healing spells. At the current level-30 cap this restriction is not relevant yet because Shadowform is not normally reachable until level 40.
Can Gnomes be Priests?
Yes. Gnome Priest is an officially announced Forever race/class combination with Confounding Flash and Contingency Plan as its Priest-specific spells.
Can Skyborne be Priests?
No. Priest is not present in either announced Skyborne class list.
What level does Priest learn Divine Spirit?
Every Priest now learns Divine Spirit as a baseline ability at level 30. It is no longer a Discipline talent.
