King’s Rest returns to the Mythic+ rotation with Midnight Season 2 as one of three legacy dungeons from Battle for Azeroth. The dungeon remains a linear run through the royal mausoleum in Zuldazar, but Patch 12.1 updates its pacing, boss encounters, trash composition and visual clarity for modern Mythic+. The most important preparation is to assign interrupts, keep frontal attacks away from the group, control the narrow corridors and save offensive cooldowns for priority targets and boss damage checks.

How King’s Rest Fits Into Midnight Season 2
King’s Rest is part of the eight-dungeon Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ pool alongside Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Temple of Sethraliss and Ruby Life Pools. The dungeon becomes available for Mythic+ when Season 2 begins, one week after the Curse of Ula’tek content update.
The season also introduces updated Mythic+ visuals for many cone and line attacks. Read the precast indicators carefully, but do not rely on them instead of correct positioning: tanks should still point frontals away from the party, and players should avoid standing in the path of attacks that track their target.

Recommended Group Preparation
- Bring reliable interrupts. King’s Rest contains dangerous casts in both trash packs and boss encounters. Assign an interrupt order before the key starts.
- Bring offensive dispels or purges where possible. Several undead and shadow-themed enemies use magical buffs or shields that can increase their damage or keep them alive.
- Plan defensive cooldowns for bosses. The dungeon’s most dangerous damage is concentrated into predictable boss mechanics rather than evenly spread across every pull.
- Keep the group compact when required. Some mechanics need players to stack or move together, while others punish overlapping targets. The party leader should explain each movement pattern before the pull.
- Use crowd control on dangerous casters. Stuns, disorients, incapacitates and roots are especially valuable in the tight corridors before the second and third bosses.
- Do not overpull automatically. The dungeon is linear, but its narrow rooms make accidental extra pulls particularly expensive.
King’s Rest Mythic+ Route and Trash Priorities
King’s Rest offers limited routing freedom. The practical route is to clear the required enemies between each boss, use the available corridors and avoid unnecessary packs whenever the group has enough Enemy Forces progress. Exact enemy placement and percentage values should be checked in the current Dungeon Journal and route tool after launch, because Season 2 includes a full creature review.
Trash Before The Golden Serpent
The opening section teaches the dungeon’s main positioning rule: tanks must keep large frontal attacks pointed away from the party. Animated Guardians use a frontal slam that can damage and stun multiple players. The tank should begin moving out of the cast area after the frontal direction is established, while the rest of the group stays behind the enemy.
Minions of Zul are protected by a magical shield that also increases their damage. Purge or dispel these effects when available. If the group lacks enough offensive dispels, focus one target at a time and use crowd control to prevent the pack from overwhelming the healer.
Trash Between The Golden Serpent and The Council
The corridor after the first boss contains several high-priority casts and narrow engagement areas. Pull enemies away from patrols and keep casters grouped where interrupts and cleave can reach them. Do not allow the tank to be surrounded by multiple frontal attacks.
Save a stun or interrupt for any cast that applies a group-wide debuff or sharply increases an enemy’s damage. If several casts overlap, interrupt the ability that affects the entire party first, then stop the cast that buffs the enemy or targets the healer.
Trash Before Mchimba the Embalmer
After the Council, the dungeon becomes more punishing because several packs are fought in confined rooms. The group should establish a kill order before starting each pull. Casters and enemies that create persistent ground effects should normally be handled before low-threat melee enemies.
Move away from sarcophagi and interactable objects only when the encounter requires it. Avoid dragging enemies through previously cleared areas, since accidental re-engagement is costly in a key.
Trash Before Dazar, The First King
The final section is a sustained test of defensive cooldowns, target priority and movement. Keep patrols separated from stationary packs, avoid pulling around corners without line-of-sight control and make sure the healer has room to recover between pulls.
The Season 2 version of Dazar has a new ability package, so players should not rely on the old Battle for Azeroth strategy. Read the Dungeon Journal before the first key and treat every newly marked area, charge or summoned object as a priority mechanic until its behavior is familiar.
The Golden Serpent Mythic+ Guide
The Golden Serpent is the first boss. The fight combines frontal positioning with movement around dangerous ground effects and summoned objects. The tank should keep the boss facing away from the party and avoid turning it across melee players.
- Tank: Hold the boss near the edge of the room and rotate it only when necessary. Never aim a frontal attack through the group.
- Healer: Prepare for bursts when players are forced to move or when the boss’s area effects overlap. Keep players topped before major incoming damage rather than relying on emergency healing.
- DPS: Prioritize summoned enemies or objects when the encounter requires them. Do not sacrifice a required mechanic for a small amount of boss damage.
- Everyone: Spread when marked, move out of ground effects and return to the boss quickly so melee uptime is not lost unnecessarily.
The most common wipe is a frontal attack hitting several players while the group is already handling another mechanic. Keep the boss and the party on opposite sides of the room whenever possible.
The Council of Tribes Mythic+ Guide
The Council of Tribes now uses a fixed sequence: Kula the Butcher, followed by Aka’alil the Conqueror and then Zanazal the Wise. This removes the previous week-to-week variation and makes cooldown planning more consistent.
Kula the Butcher
Kula is the melee-focused section of the Council. Tanks should keep her positioned away from the group and move her only when required by ground effects. Players targeted by personal mechanics should move decisively without dragging effects through the party.
Use defensive cooldowns for heavy physical damage and interrupt or control any add or cast that threatens to overlap with Kula’s major attack. DPS players should avoid cleaving additional Council targets unless the encounter explicitly makes them active.
Aka’alil the Conqueror
Aka’alil’s section emphasizes target selection and movement. Keep the active boss in a predictable location and leave open space for players handling targeted attacks. If a mechanic creates a line, cone or charge path, move perpendicular to it rather than running through another player.
The party should agree in advance where ranged players will stand. This makes targeted attacks easier to resolve and prevents the room from becoming covered in overlapping effects.
Zanazal the Wise
Zanazal is the Council’s caster-focused section. Interrupt priority casts, control any summoned enemies and avoid allowing multiple dangerous abilities to complete at the same time. The tank should gather controllable enemies without placing them on top of players handling personal mechanics.
Do not use every interrupt on low-impact casts at the start of the encounter. Assign a rotation and keep one or two emergency stops available for casts that cannot be allowed to finish.
Mchimba the Embalmer Mythic+ Guide
Mchimba the Embalmer is a mechanics-heavy encounter in which individual players can be separated from the group. The party should spread enough to avoid shared damage, but remain close enough for assistance when a player is trapped or affected by an interaction mechanic.
- Tank: Keep Mchimba positioned so the boss does not force the group into previously created hazards. Move only when the encounter requires it.
- Healer: Track players who are isolated or unable to act. Plan cooldowns around the periods when several players take damage while the group is divided.
- DPS: Stop attacking when a personal survival or rescue mechanic takes priority. Free trapped players quickly and return to the boss.
- Everyone: React immediately to being placed inside a sarcophagus or affected by an embalming mechanic. Do not assume another player can solve it without communication.
A common failure occurs when the group handles the first mechanic correctly but leaves hazards in poor locations. Use the edges of the room for avoidable effects and preserve the center for movement and rescue mechanics.
Shadow of Zul Mythic+ Guide
Shadow of Zul has been adjusted for Midnight Season 2 because its previous damage profile scaled poorly in higher keys. The encounter now follows modern Mythic+ design standards, but it remains a high-priority fight for interrupts, dispels and coordinated movement.
Keep the boss away from the group when it uses frontal or targeted attacks. Players affected by shadow mechanics should move to the assigned area without crossing through other party members. If the encounter creates adds, prioritize the add that threatens the group with unavoidable damage or a healing reduction effect.
- Interrupt dangerous shadow casts. Do not allow the boss or its summons to chain-cast group damage.
- Dispel only with a plan. If several players are affected, establish a dispel priority rather than removing every debuff immediately.
- Use defensive cooldowns during overlap. The dangerous moment is usually a boss attack combined with an add cast or movement requirement.
- Maintain clean positioning. Do not spread hazards across the middle of the room, and leave a clear path for players who must move.
The main wipe pattern is allowing Shadow of Zul’s casts to overlap while the group is moving. Assign interrupts before the pull and use personal defensives when the healer must move or handle a dispel.
Dazar, The First King Mythic+ Guide
Dazar is the final boss and has been redesigned for Midnight Season 2 with a new set of abilities. The old Battle for Azeroth strategy should not be treated as authoritative. Read the current Dungeon Journal for the exact ability names and markers, then apply the same core principles used throughout King’s Rest: keep frontal attacks away from the group, preserve movement space and treat summoned objects or adds as encounter mechanics rather than optional targets.
- Tank: Face Dazar away from the group and move him only when a mechanic requires repositioning. Avoid turning the boss across melee players.
- Healer: Prepare for predictable bursts around charges, area attacks and any phase transition. Use raid-wide cooldowns when multiple players must move or handle objects.
- DPS: Follow the target priority shown by the current Dungeon Journal. Save burst for required adds, shields or transition objectives instead of using every cooldown on the boss immediately.
- Everyone: Watch for new line and cone indicators, move out of marked areas and keep the center or assigned safe zone available for the next mechanic.
Because Dazar’s encounter has changed, the safest approach is to run the boss once on a lower difficulty before pushing a new key level. Learn which abilities require spreading, stacking, interrupting or switching targets, then assign responsibilities to specific players.
Mythic+ Affixes and King’s Rest
King’s Rest uses the standard Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ affix structure. The current season also includes Lindormi’s Guidance at lower keystone levels. Marked non-boss enemies contribute the required Enemy Forces progress when defeated, and player deaths do not reduce the timer while the affix is active.
At higher levels, Xal’atath’s Bargain affixes enter the rotation one level later than in the previous system. Check the current affix panel before starting the key and adjust interrupt assignments, dispel priorities and defensive planning accordingly.
King’s Rest Loot in Midnight Season 2
Mythic+ loot is awarded from the end-of-dungeon chest rather than directly from individual bosses. King’s Rest contributes its dungeon loot table to the seasonal Mythic+ reward pool, and completed runs can also count toward the Mythic+ row of the Great Vault.
Exact item levels, upgrade-track details and season-specific reward values should be checked in the current Midnight Season 2 reward panel after launch. The dungeon does not guarantee a particular item, trinket or weapon. Rare cosmetic and special dungeon drops remain subject to random chance.
Common King’s Rest Mythic+ Mistakes
- Turning a frontal attack through the party while repositioning.
- Starting a pull without an interrupt order.
- Using every offensive cooldown on trash before a boss damage check.
- Allowing magical shields or enemy buffs to remain active when a purge is available.
- Leaving ground effects in the center of a room.
- Pulling around corners without checking for patrols or inactive enemies.
- Following old Dazar or Shadow of Zul guides without checking the Season 2 Dungeon Journal.
- Ignoring the fixed Council order and failing to plan cooldowns for each section.
- Using crowd control too late, after several dangerous casts have already started.
- Assuming a successful lower-level run proves that the same pull is safe at a higher key.
Practical Starting Plan for Your First Season 2 Key
- Open the current Dungeon Journal and review the four boss encounters, especially Shadow of Zul and Dazar.
- Assign interrupts and identify who can purge, dispel, stun or provide emergency crowd control.
- Use a conservative linear route and avoid unnecessary extra packs until the dungeon’s Season 2 enemy placement is familiar.
- Save major offensive cooldowns for the Council, Shadow of Zul and Dazar unless the group needs them to survive a dangerous trash pull.
- Keep every boss facing away from the party and preserve open space for movement mechanics.
- After the first run, adjust only one or two pulls at a time rather than changing the entire route.
