The Writhing Brood is a rare serpent mount from Zul'jan, the final boss of Altar of Fangs in World of Warcraft: Midnight. The mount is available through eligible Mythic and Mythic+ clears, making Altar of Fangs the only dungeon you need to target if this mount is your goal.
Blizzard has not published an official drop percentage for The Writhing Brood. Community database percentages are based on observed player drops and can change as more kills are recorded. The important part for farming is simpler: Mythic 0 provides a regular reset-based attempt, while Mythic+ gives you a repeatable way to continue farming after your Mythic 0 attempt is used.
If you want help with repeated eligible clears instead of farming the dungeon yourself, see our The Writhing Brood mount farm service.

How to Get The Writhing Brood in WoW
To get The Writhing Brood, you need to complete Altar of Fangs on an eligible difficulty and defeat Zul'jan. The dungeon contains three bosses in a fixed order:
- Rav'i
- The Writhing Coil
- Zul'jan
Zul'jan is the final encounter and the listed source of The Writhing Brood. Despite the mount's description referencing your battle against The Writhing Coil, The Writhing Coil does not drop the mount. Your actual mount attempt comes from completing the dungeon and defeating Zul'jan.
On Mythic difficulty, complete your eligible Altar of Fangs run and collect the final reward. In Mythic+, finish the keystone and check the completion reward at the end of the dungeon.

The Writhing Brood Drop Chance
There is currently no official Blizzard drop rate for The Writhing Brood. This is important because community databases can display percentages calculated from recorded kills, but those numbers are not the same as a confirmed Blizzard drop rate.
Early-season values can also move significantly as the sample size increases. For that reason, it is better to treat The Writhing Brood as an RNG dungeon mount rather than plan your farm around a specific percentage.
There is also no confirmed bad-luck protection or guaranteed number of kills after which the mount must appear. Every eligible attempt should therefore be treated as another independent chance at the reward.
Does a Higher Mythic+ Key Increase the Drop Chance?
There is currently no published evidence that completing a higher Altar of Fangs keystone increases The Writhing Brood drop chance. If the mount is your only objective, there is no reason to deliberately push the highest key you can complete.
A faster and more consistent Altar of Fangs run is generally more useful for mount farming than increasing the key level unnecessarily.
Mythic 0 vs Mythic+: Best Way to Farm The Writhing Brood
The most efficient farming strategy combines Mythic 0 attempts on multiple characters with repeatable Mythic+ runs.
| Method | Advantages | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Mythic 0 | Easier and faster; ideal for alts | Daily loot reset per eligible character |
| Mythic+ | Repeatable and also provides rating, gear and Great Vault progress | Requires an Altar of Fangs keystone or access to another player's key |
Recommended Farming Route
- Run Altar of Fangs on Mythic 0 with your main character.
- Repeat the Mythic 0 attempt on any eligible level 90 alts.
- After using your M0 attempts, switch to Mythic+.
- Prioritize Altar of Fangs keys your group can clear quickly and consistently.
- Repeat until The Writhing Brood appears.
This approach gives you inexpensive daily attempts through Mythic 0 while still allowing additional farming through Mythic+.
Using Alts to Get More Mount Attempts
Alts are particularly useful for The Writhing Brood because each eligible character can use its own Mythic 0 loot opportunity. If you have several level 90 characters, you can multiply the number of low-difficulty attempts without having to repeatedly push Mythic+ keys.
For example, instead of running only one Mythic 0 clear on your main, you can clear Altar of Fangs once on several characters and then return to your main for repeatable Mythic+ farming.
This does not change the drop rate of an individual attempt. It simply gives you more eligible attempts over the same period.
Where Is Altar of Fangs?
Altar of Fangs is located inside the Vaults of Atal'Utek beneath the Coiled Isle.
The dungeon entrance is approximately:
/way #2509 47.2 67.6 Altar of Fangs Entrance
The main entrances into the Vaults of Atal'Utek from the Coiled Isle are:
/way #2512 43.3 44.2— Gate of the Serpent Eye/way #2512 45.4 65.9— Gate of the Eastern Fang/way #2512 31.8 64.9— Gate of the Western Fang
Players who have unlocked the relevant Altar of Fangs Mythic+ teleport can skip most of this travel time and move directly to the dungeon entrance.
Zul'jan: What Mount Farmers Need to Know
Zul'jan is the third and final boss of Altar of Fangs. You do not need a specialized mount-farming tactic beyond successfully completing the encounter, but failed Zul'jan pulls will quickly reduce the efficiency of repeated runs.
The encounter revolves around Ritual of the Fang, Ritual Venom and physical attacks that interact with the venom mechanic. Players need to manage the ritual beams correctly, avoid unnecessary damage and handle the venom mechanic rather than attempting to brute-force the fight.
If your group is farming repeatedly, consistency matters more than raw key level. A group that can clear the dungeon without wipes will produce more mount attempts per hour.
Can You Farm The Writhing Brood on Heroic?
The current Altar of Fangs reward information lists Mythic and Mythic+ as the confirmed difficulties for The Writhing Brood. Heroic should therefore not be used as your mount-farming route unless Blizzard changes the live loot table.
If your only goal is the mount, use Mythic 0 for the easier reset-based attempt and Mythic+ for additional repeatable clears.
What Else Do You Get While Farming?
Altar of Fangs is part of the Midnight Season 2 Mythic+ pool, so repeated runs can provide useful progression even when the mount does not drop.
- Mythic+ Rating from qualifying keys;
- Great Vault dungeon progress;
- Season 2 dungeon gear;
- upgrade resources from eligible content;
- Altar of Fangs achievements;
- additional Zul'jan loot.
This makes Mythic+ the more productive long-session farming method if your character still needs seasonal progression.

Common Writhing Brood Farming Mistakes
- Farming the wrong boss: the listed source is Zul'jan, not The Writhing Coil.
- Using Heroic for repeated attempts: current reward information confirms Mythic and Mythic+ instead.
- Assuming a community percentage is guaranteed: Blizzard has not published an official drop chance.
- Ignoring alts: additional eligible characters provide more Mythic 0 attempts.
- Pushing unnecessarily high keys: there is no confirmed mount-drop advantage from increasing the keystone level.
- Leaving after a failed run: the mount attempt requires completing the dungeon and defeating Zul'jan.
