WoW Warbands are the account-wide layer that connects your eligible Retail characters across realms and factions within the same Battle.net region. The system shares selected progression, collections, reputations, achievements, flight points, items, gold storage, and other unlocks, but it does not turn every character into one shared save. Gear progression, many currencies, class-specific requirements, some quests, and several legacy systems still remain character-specific.

The practical way to use Warbands is to separate three questions. First, decide whether a system is genuinely Warband-wide or only visible across the account. Second, use the Warband Bank for items, reagents, and gold that can actually move between characters. Third, transfer eligible currencies through the Currency pane instead of assuming every currency has one shared balance. This guide covers those three layers and explains the restrictions that matter when preparing alts.

How WoW Warbands Work Across Your Account

A Warband includes the eligible characters on your Battle.net account within one game region. It crosses realms, factions, and even multiple World of Warcraft subscriptions attached to that Battle.net account, but it does not cross between separate regions such as Europe and the Americas. That region boundary matters for players who maintain characters in more than one region because progression and Warband Bank access do not merge across it.

Blizzard's official Warbands overview defines the system around shared progression rather than around a fixed group of favorite characters. The characters shown together in the character-select Campsite are only the visible presentation. Your Warband is larger than the characters currently standing in that scene.

What is shared and what remains character-specific

The fastest way to understand Warbands is to stop using "account-wide" as a blanket label. Some systems are fully shared, some are transferable, and some merely recognize that another character already completed something. The table below separates those cases.

SystemWarband behaviorImportant restriction
Modern Renown and converted reputationsEligible reputation and Renown progress is shared across the Warband. Not every legacy reputation has been converted. Choice-based reputations and unusual progression systems can remain separate.
AchievementsMost achievement score and many achievement objectives are Warband-wide.Some achievements remain character-specific when completing them on one character is part of the challenge.
Mounts, pets, heirlooms, and many collectionsShared through the account collection system.Normal class, race, faction, or eligibility restrictions can still control actual use.
Transmog appearancesMost appearances, including non-cosmetic class-restricted gear appearances, can be collected by characters that cannot equip the source item.Collecting an appearance does not override its use restrictions. The intended class, armor type, weapon type, or other requirements can still determine who may transmog it.
Flight pointsStandard discovered flight points are shared across the Warband.Special travel systems can still have their own unlock rules.
Warbound until Equipped gearCan move between Warband characters before it is equipped. It becomes Soulbound when equipped and then stops being transferable.
Warband BankShared storage for eligible items, reagents, and deposited gold.Soulbound items cannot simply be moved into it for another character.
CurrenciesEligible currencies can be transferred between characters. Many are not one shared balance. Some are non-transferable and some apply a transfer loss.
Character gear and high-end progressionUsually remains on the individual character.Warbands do not automatically copy item level, raid gear, PvP gear, or personal progression to alts.
Quests and campaignsWarband completion can affect rewards, reputation, visibility, and account unlocks.Quest completion itself is not universally shared. An alt may still need a quest or campaign step when a system explicitly requires it.

The practical rule is simple: if the game labels something Warband-wide, Warband Transferable, Warband Currency, or Warbound, use that exact label. Do not assume that another system with similar wording behaves the same way. This is particularly important with currencies and quest rewards, where the account may remember completion without giving every character the same local state.

Current Midnight alt progression still uses Warband bonuses

Warbands remain part of current Retail progression in Midnight. The Midnight Warband Mentor achievement series grants 5 percent additional experience up to level 90 after the first level-90 character, increasing by another 5 percent for each additional qualifying character up to a maximum of 25 percent after five. That makes leveling later alts faster, but it does not grant those alts completed gear, professions, quest inventories, or endgame unlocks that are still character-based.

If the immediate goal is getting another character to the current level cap, ExpCarry's verified WoW leveling service covers Retail characters up to level 90. For manual leveling, the important Warband lesson is that shared bonuses reduce repeated leveling friction, but they do not remove the need to check campaign and endgame prerequisites on the new character.

Warband Reputation, Renown and Quest Progress

Reputation is one of the biggest areas where Warbands remove duplicate work. Eligible modern reputations and Renown tracks share one Warband-level standing, so progress earned by one character advances the same track for the others. This is why an alt can often access a reputation rank without repeating every world quest or side quest that the main character used to earn it.

Warband-wide reputation does not mean every old faction is shared

Blizzard converted many Dragonflight reputations and has continued expanding Warband-wide reputation coverage, while newer major Renown tracks are built around Warband progression. Deliberate exceptions still remain. Systems based on mutually exclusive choices, character identity, or unusual progression can remain character-specific. Aldor and Scryer and Shadowlands Covenant choices are examples Blizzard has used when explaining why some progression should not be merged automatically.

The safest workflow is to open the Reputation pane on the character that needs a reward and check how the faction is labeled before farming it again. For current expansion planning, the ExpCarry Midnight Renown guide covers the current shared faction tracks separately from this Warband systems guide.

First-time quest rewards and repeated alt completions

Warband quest tracking is designed to prevent players with many alts from multiplying one-time account progression. A quest can have a first-time Warband reward and then provide a different repeat reward when another character completes it. Reputation is a common example: the first eligible completion can award the Warband reputation, while a later alt completion may give a different currency or reward instead of granting the same reputation again.

This is why the game marks quests that have already been completed by your Warband and provides options to hide Warband-completed quests. That marker does not mean the quest is automatically finished in the current character's log. It means the account knows another character has completed the Warband-relevant version of that objective.

If a faction reward is the actual goal, check the existing Warband rank before starting another reputation grind. Farming ranks that the Warband already owns does not create a second independent Renown track for the alt.

How the Warband Bank Works

The Warband Bank is shared storage that sits beside your individual character storage. It can be opened through bankers throughout the game and gives the Warband up to five purchasable tabs with 98 inventory slots each. All eligible characters in the same Warband can deposit and withdraw from those tabs, regardless of realm or faction inside the region.

What you can put in the Warband Bank

Any item that is not Soulbound can normally be stored in the Warband Bank. That includes many tradeable materials, consumables, BoE items, and Warbound until Equipped gear. The bank also supports deposited gold, which means you can move gold between your own characters without mailing it back and forth.

The most useful distinction is between trade state and item quality. An Epic item is not automatically shareable, and a low-quality item is not automatically blocked. The binding text controls whether it can move.

Item typeCan use Warband Bank?Practical alt use
Warbound until Equipped gearYes, before it is equippedStore it until the correct armor type, class, or alt actually needs the slot.
Bind on Equip gearYes while still tradeableMove it to an alt or keep it for Auction House or crafting decisions.
Tradeable crafting reagentsYesCentralize materials so multiple crafters can use one stockpile.
Consumables and ordinary trade goodsUsually yes if not SoulboundKeep shared flasks, food, enchants, and materials in one location.
Soulbound equipped gearNoIt remains character-specific unless another game system explicitly changes its binding.
Warband gold depositYesUse one shared reserve for repairs, vendors, crafting, and alt purchases.

The most expensive mistake with Warbound until Equipped gear is equipping it on the wrong character just to test it. Once equipped, the item becomes Soulbound. If you are preparing several alts, compare who benefits from the piece before equipping it.

Craft directly from Warband Bank reagents

You do not have to withdraw every reagent before crafting. Warband Bank reagents can be consumed by crafting, and Blizzard later expanded that support so reagents stored there can also be used for all types of crafting orders. This makes the bank especially effective when several characters maintain different professions.

A practical organization is to reserve one tab for current expansion reagents, one for older profession materials, one for Warbound gear, one for consumables and account projects, and one flexible tab for housing, collectibles, or items waiting for an alt. The exact layout matters less than keeping items where another character can find them without logging through the entire roster.

Remote Warband Bank access

The "Warbanding Together" questline around Gadgetzan rewards the Warband Bank Distance Inhibitor. It summons access to the Warband Bank for 10 minutes and has a base 4-hour cooldown. Character achievements can reduce that cooldown, down to 2 hours when both available reductions are unlocked. The remote bank is useful before raids, profession sessions, or long outdoor routes when you realize that a reagent or Warbound item is stored on the account rather than in the current character's bags.

There is also a multi-account limitation worth remembering. If multiple characters from different WoW subscriptions on the same Battle.net account are online simultaneously, Blizzard notes that only the character that logs into the realm first receives Warband Bank access. This is a niche restriction, but it matters for players who actively multibox or keep several subscriptions connected.

How to Transfer Gold Between Warband Characters

Gold and normal game currencies use different Warband systems. Gold is handled through the Warband Bank: deposit it from one character, then withdraw it on another. This is different from the Currency pane used for Warband Transferable currencies.

  1. Open a banker. Switch to the Warband Bank rather than the current character's personal bank.
  2. Deposit the amount of gold you want shared. The gold becomes available through the Warband Bank balance.
  3. Log into the alt. Open the Warband Bank again from a banker or remote bank access.
  4. Withdraw the required amount. Leave the rest centralized if several characters use the same reserve.

This is useful for profession purchases, repairs, vendor collectibles, crafting orders, and Auction House preparation. Keep the shared reserve separate from bound currencies: normal gold moves through the Warband Bank, while eligible game currencies use the Currency pane described below.

How Warband Currency Transfers Work

Most transferable currencies are not automatically pooled into one Warband balance. The game keeps the currency on individual characters and lets the receiving character pull eligible amounts from another member of the Warband. The Currency UI is therefore the correct place to manage tokens, event resources, older expansion currencies, and other resources marked as transferable within the Warband.

Step-by-step currency transfer

The current transfer flow works from the character that should receive the currency. If the alt needs the resource, log into the alt first.

  1. Open the Character window and Currency tab. Use the current receiving character.
  2. Find the currency. Transferable currencies display Warband transfer information and the Warband icon.
  3. Use the Warband currency filter if needed. The view for transferable Warband currencies can show currencies owned by other characters even when the current alt has never earned that currency.
  4. Select the currency and choose Transfer. The transfer window lists Warband characters that currently hold it.
  5. Select the source character and amount. Use the maximum shortcut when you want to consolidate the entire balance.
  6. Check the receiving amount. If the currency has a transfer loss, the interface shows the result before confirmation.
  7. Confirm the transfer. The resource moves to the character you are currently playing.

Blizzard's currency and Warband Bank UI update added a dropdown that displays transferable currency types across the Warband and a maximum-transfer button, allowing a character to request a transferable currency even if it has never personally earned it.

Transferable, shared, and non-transferable are different labels

Before moving anything, read the currency's own label. The following three states should not be treated as interchangeable.

Currency stateHow it behavesWhat to check
Warband CurrencyThe balance is Warband-wide and does not require a normal character-to-character transfer.Confirm that the resource is actually labeled as a Warband Currency.
Warband TransferableThe balance remains on individual characters but can be pulled to another Warband character.Check whether the transfer is 1:1 or whether the interface shows a loss.
Non-transferable currencyRemains on the character that earned it.Do not plan an alt purchase around a main-character balance that cannot move.

Transferability can also vary by expansion and purpose. Cosmetic or collection currencies are more likely to be freely transferable because the reward itself benefits the Warband. Character-power currencies are more likely to remain restricted. The live tooltip and transfer button are the final authority, especially after a new season or patch changes an economy. If a currency purchase is gated by a reputation or Renown rank your Warband has not reached yet, ExpCarry's WoW Reputation and Renown service is separate from currency transfer itself; raising the shared rank and moving an eligible currency solve two different requirements.

Warbound Gear and Alt Gearing

Warbound until Equipped gear is the bridge between account-wide convenience and character-specific gearing. It lets your main collect an item for an alt and store it safely in the Warband Bank, but it does not create a shared gear set that every character can equip.

Do not equip Warbound gear until you choose the recipient

Warbound until Equipped means exactly that. The item can be traded around the Warband only while it remains unequipped. Once a character equips it, it becomes Soulbound to that character. This makes the Warband Bank the correct holding area for pieces that might fit several alts.

A simple priority is to assign Warbound gear to the character with the largest useful item-level upgrade, provided the armor type and item requirements fit. Avoid equipping a sidegrade on the first alt you log into if a weaker character would gain far more from the same piece.

Warbands do not replace character-specific endgame progression

Raid loot, Mythic+ gearing, PvP progression, character-specific upgrade resources, profession knowledge, and similar systems can still require work on the actual character. Warbands are designed to reduce duplicate account chores, not to let one geared main instantly clone its full endgame state onto every alt.

This distinction matters most when planning a new role. Shared Renown may unlock the vendor, Warband gold may pay the cost, and Warbound gear may cover several slots, but the alt can still need its own level, equipment, seasonal progression, and activity access.

Collections, Achievements, Flight Points and Other Shared Unlocks

Warbands extend beyond bank storage. Collections are one of the strongest account-wide layers because mounts, pets, heirlooms, many appearances, achievements, and standard flight points can follow you when you change characters.

Transmog collection is broader than equipment eligibility

A character can collect most item appearances even when that character cannot equip the source item. Since the 20th Anniversary content update, this also includes appearances from non-cosmetic class-restricted gear, allowing another class to add those appearances to the Transmog collection. This removes much of the old need to repeat legacy content on every armor type or class simply to collect a drop.

Collection and usability are separate rules. Collecting an appearance for the Warband does not mean every class can use it. A class-restricted appearance can be collected by another class but still remain usable only by the intended class, while normal armor, weapon, and other transmog restrictions continue to apply.

Achievements can share progress without making every criterion universal

Warband achievement score represents accomplishments across the account, and many achievements now combine progress from several characters. Blizzard still keeps exceptions when doing the entire task on one character is central to the challenge. Read the achievement criteria instead of assuming every counter can always be split across alts.

Flight points are simpler. Standard flight points discovered by one Warband character are available to the rest of the Warband. This is a small change compared with shared Renown, but it removes repeated travel setup when bringing a new alt into older or current zones.

Restrictions to Check Before Developing an Alt

The strongest Warband workflow is not "send everything to the alt." It is "identify what the alt does not need to repeat." That prevents wasted farming while also avoiding the opposite mistake of expecting an account unlock to satisfy a character-specific requirement. Blizzard's current returning-player guide still treats shared Renown, Warband Bank access, achievements, and collections as core Warband systems in Midnight, while character progression remains a separate layer.

Use this alt checklist before starting a grind

Before farming a reputation, currency, quest chain, or gear source again, check the following:

  • Region: both characters must belong to the same Battle.net region for the same Warband.
  • Reputation label: verify that the faction is actually Warband-wide rather than a character-specific reputation that has not been converted.
  • Currency label: check whether the currency is Warband-wide, transferable within the Warband, or character-specific before assuming the main can fund the alt.
  • Transfer ratio: some transferable currencies can lose value during transfer, so read the confirmation window.
  • Gear binding: move Warbound until Equipped items before equipping them.
  • Quest state: Warband-completed does not always mean the alt has personally completed the quest.
  • Class and profession requirements: a shared reputation rank can unlock access, while the purchasing alt can still need the correct class, profession, or skill.
  • Seasonal character progression: current gearing and upgrade systems can deliberately stay character-specific.

This checklist is more reliable than memorizing one permanent list of account-wide features because Blizzard continues to expand Warband integration. Reputations, currencies, event trackers, and rewards can be added to the shared layer over time while character-power progression remains restricted.

Leveling an alt is faster, but not automatically complete

Current Midnight Warband Mentor achievements make repeated leveling faster, and shared Renown, flight points, collections, and bank access remove many setup chores. That still leaves the alt's actual leveling path, equipment, class setup, and required campaign gates. The ExpCarry Midnight leveling guide covers the current 1-90 route separately so this article can stay focused on what the Warband itself shares.

A good rule is to centralize before you start. Put tradeable consumables and reagents in the Warband Bank, transfer only the currencies the alt needs, withdraw enough gold for immediate purchases, and reserve Warbound gear until the character reaches the correct level. If ordinary gold is the limiting resource rather than a bound currency, ExpCarry's Retail WoW Gold page covers the tradeable gold economy, which can then be redistributed among eligible characters through the Warband Bank. This avoids repeated logins and prevents accidental binding of gear to the wrong character.

Common Warband Mistakes

Most Warband problems are not bugs. They come from treating three different systems - shared progression, bank transfers, and currency transfers - as though they were the same thing. When something does not move, check its category before assuming the Warband is malfunctioning.

The currency is missing on the alt

Open the Currency pane and use the view for transferable currencies across your Warband. Blizzard added this option specifically so a receiving character can see transferable currencies held by other members of the Warband even if the current character has never earned that currency before.

The Transfer button does not appear

The most likely explanation is that the currency is not transferable. Character-power currencies can remain intentionally locked to the character that earned them. A resource being visible on several characters does not automatically make it transferable within the Warband.

The Warbound item stopped being shareable

Check whether somebody equipped it. Warbound until Equipped changes to Soulbound once equipped. Moving an item through the bank does not bind it, but equipping it does.

The alt has the Renown rank but cannot use the reward

Shared Renown can unlock a reward tier without satisfying the reward's local requirements. Profession recipes can still require the correct profession. Gear can still require the correct level or class. Campaign-linked systems can still require a character-specific unlock. Separate "the Warband unlocked the vendor reward" from "this character meets the purchase or use conditions."

The Warband Bank is unavailable while using multiple WoW accounts

If several WoW subscriptions under the same Battle.net account are logged in simultaneously, the first character logged into the realm receives Warband Bank access. Log out or change the login order if the wrong account currently owns access.

WoW Warbands FAQ

These answers cover the most common questions that affect alt planning, bank use, and currency movement.

Is every character on my Battle.net account in the same Warband?
Eligible Retail characters in the same Battle.net region belong to the Warband across realms, factions, and subscriptions. Characters in another region are not part of that same regional Warband.

Is all reputation shared through Warbands?
No. Many modern and converted reputations are Warband-wide, but some choice-based, unusual, or not-yet-converted reputations remain character-specific. Check the faction itself before repeating a grind.

Can I transfer every currency to an alt?
No. Only currencies configured for Warband transfer can move. Some transfer at full value, some can have a loss, and character-progression currencies can remain non-transferable.

Do I need to mail items between alts?
Not for eligible Warband Bank items. Deposit a non-Soulbound or Warbound item in the shared bank and withdraw it on the target character.

Can I craft using materials stored in the Warband Bank?
Yes. Eligible reagents can be used directly from Warband storage, including support for all types of crafting orders.

Does Warband-wide Renown mean my alt has completed the campaign?
No. Shared Renown and character quest state are separate. Some Warband unlocks can remove repeated work, but a quest or campaign can still require character-specific completion when the content says so.

Conclusion

Warbands are best understood as a shared account layer, not as a full merge of every character. Modern Renown, many achievements, collections, flight points, Warbound gear, bank storage, and selected unlocks can follow you across characters, while gear progression, many currencies, quest states, class requirements, and some legacy systems remain individual. Checking the exact Warband label before repeating content is the easiest way to avoid wasting time on an alt.

For day-to-day use, centralize eligible items, reagents, and gold in the Warband Bank; leave Warbound until Equipped gear unbound until you choose its recipient; and transfer eligible currencies from the receiving character through the Currency pane. Before any alt grind, confirm reputation sharing, currency transferability, transfer losses, quest requirements, and character-specific power progression. That turns Warbands from a vague account-wide feature into a practical system for removing only the repetition that Blizzard actually intended to remove.
