Rated Battleground Blitz is Midnight’s solo-queue battleground ladder: two teams of eight players compete on objective-based maps, earn personal rating from wins and losses, and work toward seasonal PvP rewards. In Midnight Season 2, Elite requires 2,300 rating, the Strategist title requires 25 Rated Battleground Blitz wins at Elite rank, and the top 0.1% of the end-of-season ladder earns the faction-specific Venomous Marshal or Venomous Warlord title.

How Battleground Blitz Works in Midnight Season 2

Battleground Blitz is a rated 8v8 format built around fast objective play rather than traditional 10v10 rated battleground compositions. You queue alone or with an eligible partner through the Rated tab of the PvP interface. The game assembles both teams, assigns a battleground, and calculates rating from the result and the relative strength of the lobby.

The mode uses familiar battleground objectives with modified rules designed for smaller teams and shorter matches. A team can win by capturing bases, delivering flags or carts, controlling resources, or reaching the map’s victory threshold. Damage and healing matter, but kills are usually valuable only when they create time to complete an objective.

Rated Battleground Blitz is separate from Training Grounds, random battlegrounds, and the 40-player Slayer’s Rise epic battleground. Training Grounds are useful for learning Arathi Basin, Silvershard Mines, and Battle for Gilneas against computer-controlled opponents, but they do not replace rated Blitz matches for rating or seasonal achievements.

50 Blitz wins as a healer at Rival I or higherUnbound Strategist’s Pennant toy
Top 0.1% at season end with 50 winsVenomous Marshal for Alliance or Venomous Warlord for Horde

The Vicious Electro Eel is earned through rated PvP wins at or above the required Combatant rating rather than from a single Battleground Blitz achievement. Your progress is tracked through the seasonal PvP rewards interface, and the mount has Horde and Alliance appearances.

The Elite PvP appearance is earned in stages. The rating achievements unlock armor pieces first, followed by the Jackpot illusion at Rival II, the prestigious cloak at Duelist, and the tabard at Elite. The armor is purchased with Conquest after the corresponding appearances have been unlocked.

The Strategist achievement is specific to Rated Battleground Blitz. You must win 25 matches while holding Elite rank during Midnight Season 2. The top-ladder reward is separate: finishing in the top 0.1% requires 50 wins during the season and awards Venomous Marshal to Alliance characters or Venomous Warlord to Horde characters.

Midnight Season 2 Rating Requirements

Midnight uses the standard PvP rank progression for rated activities. The important rating checkpoints for Battleground Blitz are:

RankRatingBlitz relevance
Combatant1,000Begins progress toward the Vicious Electro Eel and unlocks the first seasonal PvP rewards
Challenger1,400Unlocks additional PvP appearance rewards
Rival1,800Unlocks the Rival armor rewards and progresses toward the Blitz Medic achievement
Duelist2,100Unlocks the prestigious cloak
Elite2,300Unlocks the tabard and enables the Strategist win requirement

Elite was reduced to 2,300 rating in Midnight. That change also affects the rating threshold used by related high-end PvP achievements and titles. The end-of-season Venomous Marshal and Venomous Warlord titles are ladder-based, not simple rating rewards, so reaching Elite alone does not guarantee either title.

How Rating Changes in Battleground Blitz

Your rating changes after every rated match. A win normally increases rating, while a loss can reduce it once you are established on the ladder. The exact amount depends on your rating, the lobby’s matchmaking rating, and the expected result. A close match can therefore produce a different rating change from a one-sided victory.

Do not judge a session by one match. Blitz rating is affected by team composition, map selection, disconnects, and whether players respond to objective calls. The reliable way to climb is to reduce avoidable losses: arrive at objectives on time, defend when the map requires it, and convert kills into captures rather than extending unnecessary fights.

Rating is not the same as Honor or Conquest. Honor is used for PvP gearing and related purchases, Conquest purchases seasonal gear, and rating determines ranks and rating-based achievements. A high-damage match is not automatically a successful match, and a player who spends most of a game defending a base may contribute more than the player leading the scoreboard.

How to Queue and Prepare for Rated Battleground Blitz

Gear for PvP combat

Use your best current PvP equipment and make sure your PvP item level is appropriate for the season. Replace old expansion gear before entering the rated ladder, and check that your weapon, trinkets, embellishments, gems, enchants, and consumables are configured for player combat.

Do not enter a rated match while still changing talents or learning your keybinds. Training Grounds provide a low-pressure way to practice movement, interrupts, crowd control, and objective interaction before committing rating.

Prepare your interface

  • Keep the battleground objective tracker visible.
  • Use a clear nameplate setup that shows enemy crowd-control effects and important defensive cooldowns.
  • Track diminishing returns and your own interrupt and mobility cooldowns.
  • Make sure map markers, pings, and chat are easy to use during combat.
  • Know how to leave combat and interact with flags, bases, carts, or orbs without wasting global cooldowns.

Choose a role you can execute reliably

Healers are valuable because Blitz teams have fewer players than traditional rated battleground groups. A healer who rotates with the team, survives crowd control, and communicates incoming pressure often has more impact than a healer who only maximizes throughput.

Mobile damage dealers are useful for flag maps, base assaults, and recovering from lost objectives. Stealth, crowd control, dispels, interrupts, off-healing, and reliable mobility can be more important than a small difference in target-dummy damage.

Tanks are matched according to battleground rules and map requirements. Their value depends heavily on the objective. A tank should not turn every map into a teamfight; the correct play may be carrying, surviving a node assault, contesting a base, or creating time for teammates to score.

Winning Strategies for Every Battleground Blitz Map

Arathi Basin

Arathi Basin is won by controlling bases over time, not by winning one large fight in the center. Spread your opening pressure so the team can contest multiple objectives without leaving every base undefended. Call incoming attackers early and use defensive cooldowns to survive until help arrives.

After taking a base, do not abandon it immediately for a kill. A small defensive presence can force the enemy to spend time recapturing it. When the score is close, prioritize the base that changes the victory race rather than chasing the enemy team’s lowest-health players.

Battle for Gilneas

Battle for Gilneas rewards fast rotations between the Lighthouse, Waterworks, and Mine. The central road is useful for movement, but fighting there without an objective plan usually loses time. After securing two bases, defend the score and send only enough players to contest the next attack.

When assaulting a base, force defenders away from the flag with crowd control and pressure. Interrupt the capture interaction, but do not let the entire team chase one defender across the map while the rest of the enemy captures elsewhere.

Eye of the Storm

In Midnight, all four Eye of the Storm bases are active at the same time in Battleground Blitz. The previous rotating-base rule is no longer the correct strategy. The flag remains important, but base ownership generates the stable score that wins the match.

Use the map’s mobility effects to rotate between bases and respond to flag carriers. Avoid stacking the entire team at one base unless you are deliberately forcing a decisive capture. A team that owns bases but ignores the flag can still lose a close game, while a team that only fights around the flag can fall behind on passive scoring.

Silvershard Mines

Silvershard Mines is a cart-control map. The winning team is usually the one that keeps enough players near the correct cart while sending fast pressure to delay or redirect the enemy’s progress. Do not treat every cart as equally valuable: the cart closest to the scoring area often deserves the largest defensive response.

Use crowd control to displace players away from carts, but avoid chasing enemies so far that your own cart moves uncontested. Mobility, knockbacks, roots, and slows are especially valuable near track intersections and delivery points.

Temple of Kotmogu

Temple of Kotmogu is controlled through orb possession and safe scoring. Carrying an orb increases your exposure and makes positioning critical. Pass when your current position is no longer defensible, and do not take an orb simply because it is available if your team cannot protect the carrier.

Fight around the scoring areas and use line of sight to deny enemy burst windows. The best target is often the enemy carrier, but killing a carrier without recovering the orb or establishing control can waste the advantage.

Warsong Gulch and Twin Peaks

Capture-the-flag maps are decided by coordinated carrier protection, midfield control, and timely returns. Do not send every player into the enemy base. Keep enough pressure in midfield to stop the opposing carrier and prevent easy returns.

Flag carriers receive stronger pressure over time, and non-tank specializations can receive the Empowered Carrier effect when they carry the flag under the applicable match conditions. Tanks remain valuable when the team has one, but a non-tank carrier should not assume that picking up the flag is automatically a mistake.

When your team is one capture from victory, group around the carrier and remove the enemy’s ability to isolate targets. When the enemy carrier is close to your base, use coordinated crowd control and defensive cooldowns rather than scattering into separate one-on-one fights.

Deepwind Gorge

Deepwind Gorge combines resource control with mine-cart pressure. Teams must decide when to fight for carts and when to contest the enemy’s base resources. Use the objective tracker to identify which score swing is most important before committing to a long teamfight.

Mobile players should rotate quickly between carts and bases, while slower classes should avoid arriving alone after an objective has already been lost. A delayed contest can still be valuable if it prevents a final score turn, but the call must be communicated early.

Team Communication That Wins Blitz Matches

Use short, actionable calls. “Two Waterworks,” “flag top,” “need peel,” and “base capped” are more useful than a long explanation during combat. Ping the map when possible, especially if you are rotating away from your assigned objective.

  • Call the number of enemies, their location, and the objective under threat.
  • Announce when your major defensive or crowd-control cooldowns are unavailable.
  • Identify the next objective before the current fight ends.
  • Tell the team when you are leaving a base so another player can cover it.
  • Stop arguing about damage meters and return to the win condition.

A useful opening call assigns broad jobs rather than rigid routes: one player watches the home objective, mobile players rotate, healers move with the main pressure group, and the remaining players contest the first scoring point. Adjust immediately when the map state changes.

Common Battleground Blitz Mistakes

  • Fighting in the middle without an objective: A teamfight is only valuable if it creates a capture, return, escort, or defensive window.
  • Leaving a newly captured base empty: A single stealth assault can erase the advantage created by a winning fight.
  • Chasing too far: The enemy can pull you away from the objective while another player scores.
  • Ignoring the objective tracker: Visual combat is often less important than the score and remaining time.
  • Using major cooldowns after the objective is already lost: Save them for the next contest when recovery is still possible.
  • Blaming the composition: Composition matters, but poor rotations and missed calls lose more games than many players admit.
  • Leaving the match: Abandoning a rated match can apply a deserter penalty and removes your chance to recover the game.

A Practical Season 2 Progression Plan

  1. Use Training Grounds or unrated battlegrounds to refresh the objectives on Arathi Basin, Silvershard Mines, and Battle for Gilneas.
  2. Complete your PvP gearing setup before pushing rating seriously.
  3. Play enough Rated Battleground Blitz matches to learn every map rather than leaving after an unfavorable opening.
  4. Prioritize the 1,000-rating milestone if you want progress toward the Vicious Electro Eel.
  5. Set a realistic rating target: Challenger for early appearance rewards, Duelist for the prestigious cloak, or Elite for the tabard and Strategist progress.
  6. At Elite, track wins carefully because only wins earned while at Elite count toward the 25-win Strategist requirement.
  7. If pursuing Venomous Marshal or Venomous Warlord, maintain at least 50 wins and monitor the regional ladder throughout the season.

The safest way to climb is to play for repeatable decisions: arrive first, defend intelligently, communicate incoming pressure, and convert every kill into objective progress. Battleground Blitz rewards players who make the correct map decision consistently, even when their personal damage or healing totals are not the highest.
