WoW Forever Deadmines Guide

WoW Forever Deadmines Guide

The Deadmines is currently playable in the WoW Forever beta and remains one of the most useful early Alliance dungeons for combining quests, boss drops, and class objectives in a single run. Blizzard's October 1 beta update raised the level cap to 30 and explicitly listed The Deadmines among the already available dungeons. The current Forever dungeon guide recommends levels 18–23, while several associated quests can be picked up earlier. Most of the normal quest bundle is Alliance-focused, but the new Undead Paladin chain gives Horde Paladins a reason to visit as well. This guide uses current Forever beta and database information rather than assuming that every Classic quest reward, item stat, or dungeon detail is unchanged.

Short answer: Run The Deadmines around levels 18–23, collect the Stormwind and Westfall quests before entering, clear the Moonbrook mine objectives on the way to the portal, then finish the instance through Edwin VanCleef and the optional Cookie encounter. Use current Forever item and quest data because several rewards, quest rules, and Defias set bonuses differ from Classic.

WoW Forever Deadmines Overview

The Deadmines is located beneath Moonbrook in Westfall. It is an early group dungeon in current beta testing, with the familiar Defias route still centered on Rhahk'Zor, Sneed, Gilnid, Mr. Smite, Captain Greenskin, and Edwin VanCleef. Miner Johnson is a rare encounter and Cookie is a bonus boss. For the broader dungeon progression picture, see the WoW Forever dungeon overview.

Beta limitationBoss loot, itemization, and quest tuning can still change before launch, so current Forever data should take priority over old Classic tables.

One fresh beta change directly affects dungeon planning: Blizzard reduced the extra experience granted by dungeon quests by 50% beyond normal quest values on October 1. Older beta XP totals can therefore be outdated even when the quest itself is still correct.

How to Get to The Deadmines Entrance

The entrance is not the visible mine opening itself. Your group first enters the Moonbrook mine, fights through the tunnels, and reaches the actual instance portal deeper inside. The approach also contains objectives for Collecting Memories and Oh Brother..., so a quest-loaded group should not rush past the outer mine.

Alliance route

Travel to Sentinel Hill in Westfall, move south to Moonbrook, enter the Defias-controlled mine, and follow the tunnels to the portal. If you are leveling through Westfall, this fits naturally into an Alliance route because several important Deadmines quests begin in Sentinel Hill or Stormwind.

Horde route

Horde characters can still reach The Deadmines, but the trip is much longer because Westfall is Alliance territory. The current Forever guide recommends approaching from Grom'gol Base Camp in Stranglethorn Vale and traveling north along the coast toward southern Westfall. This matters most for Undead Paladins working on their Forever-specific class chain.

Deadmines Quests in WoW Forever

The standard Deadmines quest package is heavily Alliance-oriented. Collect the Stormwind and Westfall objectives before forming the run, because several of them require prerequisite chains or are completed in the mine before the instance portal. The Forever-specific Destruction in Deadmines is especially important because it sends you to the forge inside the dungeon and was specifically referenced in Blizzard's latest beta notes.

The Unsent Letter16Starts from the letter dropped by Edwin VanCleefTake the letter to Baros Alexston in Stormwind. You cannot pick this up before the VanCleef kill.

Do not plan around old beta XP screenshots for these quests. The October 1 development notes changed dungeon quest bonus experience and recalibrated some quest rewards, so the objectives and prerequisites are more reliable planning data than an older recorded XP number.

Paladin class quests that use The Deadmines

Alliance Paladins on The Test of Righteousness need Whitestone Oak Lumber from Goblin Woodcarvers in The Deadmines as part of the Verigan's Fist chain. WoW Forever also adds the Horde Undead Paladin quest A Moon-Kissed Blade; it requires level 20, and its current quest data also requires Whitestone Oak Lumber from The Deadmines. Paladins should confirm they are on the correct chain stage before entering so the run does not have to be repeated only for the lumber.

Best Quest-Loaded Deadmines Route

A good run minimizes travel and completes outside-mine, dungeon, class, and end-boss objectives in one pass. The route below is designed around the current quest locations rather than speedrunning past objectives that would force another trip.

  1. Prepare in Stormwind: pick up Collecting Memories, Oh Brother..., and Underground Assault before traveling to Westfall.
  2. Prepare in Sentinel Hill: make sure Red Silk Bandanas and the final Defias Brotherhood objective are unlocked if you are far enough through their prerequisite chain. Pick up the current Toxic Soil chain steps that lead to Destruction in Deadmines when available.
  3. Clear the Moonbrook mine objectives: complete Collecting Memories and Oh Brother... before crossing the instance portal.
  4. Rhahk'Zor and Miner Johnson: clear the first boss area; kill Miner Johnson if the rare encounter is present and your group wants his loot.
  5. Sneed's room: clear the Goblin Woodcarvers before pulling the Shredder so its Terrify cannot fear players into uncleared packs, kill Sneed's Shredder and Sneed, complete Underground Assault, and collect Whitestone Oak Lumber if a Paladin needs it.
  6. Gilnid's forge: control the Goblin Engineer, kill Gilnid, and plant the explosives for Destruction in Deadmines at the forge when you have the quest.
  7. Mr. Smite and the ship: clear the Blackguards before pushing Smite through his health thresholds, then move onto the ship carefully and control the caster adds around Captain Greenskin.
  8. Edwin VanCleef: handle both waves of Blackguards, loot the Head of VanCleef when required, and pick up The Unsent Letter from his body.
  9. Cookie and the exit: take the bonus Cookie encounter when practical, then use the dungeon exit if you need to meet Alba Fairmoon for Destruction in Deadmines instead of hearthing away immediately.

Deadmines Bosses and Strategies

The current Forever guide uses the familiar Deadmines boss roster, but the safest way to run it is to focus on add control, clean pulls, and avoiding chain aggro rather than treating every encounter as a pure damage race. The beta currently has a known issue where enemies can parry or block from behind at very close range, so do not use unusual positioning behavior as proof of a permanent boss mechanic.

Rhahk'Zor

Rhahk'Zor begins with two Defias Watchmen nearby. Pull the Watchmen separately when possible; otherwise crowd-control one while the group removes the other before focusing the boss. Tanks should establish the boss cleanly and healers should watch for the melee spike from Rhahk'Zor Slam. Also check for patrols before starting the pull.

Miner Johnson

Miner Johnson is a rare encounter rather than a guaranteed boss. Clear the surrounding non-elite miners first so they do not add unnecessary pressure. His Pierce Armor ability reduces the tank's armor, so healers should expect the tank to become more vulnerable while the debuff is active.

Sneed's Shredder and Sneed

Clear the Goblin Woodcarvers around the room before pulling because Sneed's Shredder uses Terrify and can fear players into additional packs. After the machine is destroyed, Sneed jumps out and continues the fight. His Disarm can make initial threat awkward for a weapon-dependent tank, so DPS should give the tank a moment to re-establish control. Distracting Pain is also part of the current encounter ability list.

Gilnid

Gilnid pulls with a Goblin Engineer nearby. Crowd-control the Engineer before or immediately after the pull because it can summon a remote-controlled golem that is resistant to most normal control. If the golem appears, killing the Engineer removes the summon. Gilnid's listed boss ability is Molten Metal; keep the rest of the group focused on avoiding extra trash while the tank holds him.

Mr. Smite

Two stealthed Defias Blackguards engage with Mr. Smite near the gangplank. Kill them before pushing Smite below 66% health. Smite uses Smite Stomp at roughly 66% and 33%, stunning the group while he changes weapons; entering those pauses with live adds is the main avoidable danger. After the second transition, healers should keep the tank healthy for the heavier final phase and Smite Slam.

Captain Greenskin

Captain Greenskin is surrounded by several adds, including a Defias Squallshaper. Crowd-control the Squallshaper if possible, remove the easier adds first, and keep Greenskin facing away from the group because of Cleave. Greenskin also uses Poisoned Harpoon, while the Squallshaper's Frost Nova can disrupt melee positioning, so do not let the pull spread across the deck.

Edwin VanCleef

Two stealthed Defias Blackguards join the pull immediately. Crowd-control one and kill the other before settling into the boss. Around 50% health, VanCleef calls another pair of Blackguards, so save enough control and healing capacity for that wave. VanCleef also uses Dual Wield and Thrash, adding to his strong single-target pressure. Healers should prioritize survival over damage. Loot VanCleef carefully because The Unsent Letter starts from his drop.

Cookie

Cookie is a bonus boss near the ship and exit path. The dangerous part is often reaching him without pulling extra elites from the lower deck. Once engaged cleanly, interrupt Cookie's Cooking because it heals him; Acid Splash is the other notable ability to account for. Pulling him away from dense trash makes the encounter much safer.

Deadmines Loot in WoW Forever

The current Forever loot table is close enough to the classic Deadmines roster that old item names look familiar, but the stats and set bonuses are not safe to copy from Classic. Use Forever tooltips when evaluating upgrades. The table below lists the current boss assignments without speculative drop rates.

Current Deadmines boss loot
BossCurrent listed drops
Rhahk'ZorRhahk'Zor's Hammer; Rockslicer
Miner JohnsonGold-plated Buckler; Miner's Cape
SneedTaskmaster Axe; Gold-flecked Gloves; Buzzer Blade; Buzz Saw
GilnidSmelting Pants; Lavishly Jeweled Ring
Mr. SmiteSmite's Mighty Hammer; Smite's Reaver; Thief's Blade
Captain GreenskinEmberstone Staff; Impaling Harpoon; Blackened Defias Belt
Edwin VanCleefCape of the Brotherhood; Corsair's Overshirt; Cruel Barb; Blackened Defias Armor
CookieCookie's Stirring Rod; Cookie's Tenderizer

Several of these are meaningful early upgrades in the current Forever itemization. Cruel Barb is currently item level 24, requires level 19, and carries +12 Attack Power. Smite's Mighty Hammer is item level 23, requires level 18, and has +11 Strength and +4 Agility. Emberstone Staff is item level 22, requires level 17, and adds spell damage/healing in addition to Stamina, Spirit, and Fire Resistance. These values are beta-era Forever data and should be rechecked if Blizzard changes itemization again.

Defias Leather is different in Forever

The clearest reason not to paste a Classic loot table into a Forever guide is the Defias Leather set. The current Forever Blackened Defias Armor is item level 22, requires level 17, and has +4 Strength, +3 Agility, and +10 Stamina. The Forever set bonuses are also different: two pieces grant +5 Arcane Resistance, three add +15 Attack Power against Humanoids, four give melee attacks from behind a 5% chance to trigger a Physical bleed, and five increase Daggers by 1. Those bonuses are not the same as the current Classic version.

Recommended Level and Group Setup

Levels 18–23 are the current recommended range. A conventional group built around one tank, one healer, and damage dealers gives the smoothest experience, but crowd control is unusually valuable because several encounters become much easier when a Blackguard, Squallshaper, or Engineer is removed from the pull temporarily.

At the lower end of the range, the biggest risk is not raw boss complexity but chained trash, patrols, and missed control. Bring food, water, repair before the run, clear bag space, and agree who is interrupting or crowd-controlling before entering the ship section. A level-appropriate first clear with a full quest log is usually more efficient than forcing repeated runs only for experience, especially after the October 1 dungeon quest XP adjustment.

What Is Different in WoW Forever?

The current beta confirms several changes that matter specifically to a Deadmines guide. They are more important than assuming every Classic-era number still applies.

  • The dungeon is actively testable now: Blizzard's October 1 notes list The Deadmines among the already available dungeons while raising the beta cap to 30.
  • Dungeon quest XP was retuned: the extra experience above normal quest values was reduced by 50%, and Blizzard says some quest rewards were recalibrated.
  • Destruction in Deadmines is a Forever quest: the current quest is part of the Toxic Soil storyline and sends players to sabotage the forge; Blizzard also fixed its dungeon-log sorting in the latest notes.
  • Undead Paladins have a new reason to visit: A Moon-Kissed Blade is a Horde, Undead, Paladin quest added in 1.60.1, requires level 20, and requires Whitestone Oak Lumber from The Deadmines.
  • Itemization is not a copy of Classic: current Forever tooltips show changed stats and Defias Leather set bonuses, so Classic databases should not be used as the final source for gear values.

WoW Forever Deadmines FAQ

These answers cover the remaining practical questions that are most likely to matter before forming a run.

Is The Deadmines playable in the current WoW Forever beta?
Yes. Blizzard explicitly lists The Deadmines among the already available dungeons in the October 1 beta update, when the level cap was raised to 30.

What level should I run The Deadmines?
The current Forever dungeon guide recommends levels 18–23. Some associated quests can be obtained earlier, but that does not mean a lower-level group will have the same clear speed or safety.

Are all Deadmines quests Alliance-only?
The main quest bundle is Alliance-focused, but not every Deadmines-related class objective is. WoW Forever adds A Moon-Kissed Blade for Undead Paladins, which requires Whitestone Oak Lumber from the dungeon.

Should I use Classic Deadmines loot stats?
No. Use current Forever item pages. Blackened Defias Armor and the Defias Leather set already demonstrate that Forever item levels, requirements, stats, and set bonuses can differ from Classic.

Conclusion

The best current Deadmines run is a quest-loaded level 18–23 clear: prepare the Stormwind and Westfall chains first, finish the outer-mine objectives before the portal, collect Paladin materials when relevant, plant the Forever-specific explosives at Gilnid's forge, and complete the ship through VanCleef without skipping the quest drops. Treat the current boss and loot data as current beta-era information rather than permanent launch values, and recheck itemization whenever Blizzard ships another tuning pass.
