The Hall of Thanes is a new level 13-18 dungeon beneath Ironforge and one of the first new instances available to low-level characters in World of Warcraft: Forever. It contains four current encounters — Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer — together with Dark Iron dwarves, restless spirits and several dungeon quests. Alliance players have the intended route through Old Ironforge, while current beta reports show that Horde characters can also reach the dungeon but must make a much longer and more dangerous trip through hostile territory. A standard five-player group with one tank, one healer and three DPS is the safest setup.
Recommended level: 13-18. Blizzard officially lists Hall of Thanes for this level range. Level 15-16 is a comfortable point for a first clear with the dungeon quests.
Location: beneath Ironforge in Old Ironforge. From The Great Forge, enter The High Seat where King Magni Bronzebeard stands and take the descending corridor on the left side of the throne room. The current entrance route begins around 43.5, 52.0 in Ironforge.
Alliance route: travel normally to Ironforge, head to The High Seat, take the left-side passage into Old Ironforge and follow the winding stone path toward the instance portal. Pick up the nearby quests before entering.
Horde route: Hall of Thanes is primarily an Alliance-side dungeon. Horde players have reached and entered it during the current beta, but doing so requires travelling through Alliance-controlled Dun Morogh and hostile Ironforge. No convenient Horde-specific entrance or transport shortcut has been confirmed, so the trip is significantly less practical at level 13-18.
Bosses: 4.
Group size: 5 players.
Minimum gear: there is no published item-level requirement. A practical first-run baseline is level-appropriate quest gear, current spell ranks, a functional tank setup and a healer with enough Mana to recover between difficult pulls. Blizzard defines the dungeon by its 13-18 level bracket rather than by a published minimum item level.
Hall of Thanes Location and Entrance
The dungeon is hidden below Ironforge rather than placed in a separate cave somewhere in Dun Morogh. This is why players searching around the outside of the mountain can easily miss it. The important landmark is The High Seat, the throne room connected to The Great Forge.
- Enter Ironforge and travel to The Great Forge.
- Face The High Seat where King Magni Bronzebeard stands.
- Enter the throne-room area.
- Take the corridor on the left side, around 43.5, 52.0.
- Follow the route down into Old Ironforge.
- Stay on the stone paths while descending because the lower area contains exposed lava.
- Continue toward the bridge and dungeon portal.
The descent is more dangerous than the city above. Beta players have reported that falling into the lava can leave a character unable to climb back onto the normal route, potentially turning a navigation mistake into a corpse run.
How Alliance Players Get to Hall of Thanes
Alliance characters have the intended and much easier route. Ironforge is friendly territory, several relevant quest NPCs are positioned around the city and Dun Morogh, and the dungeon fits naturally into early Alliance leveling.
Before entering, check both the Old Ironforge entrance area and the Dun Morogh quest chain connected to Dark Iron activity. In particular, Dark Iron Map starts Underground Map, which leads into Old Ironforge Incursion. Its reward choices include a gun, a two-handed mace and a wand.
If this is your first run, completing the relevant Dun Morogh steps before assembling the group prevents an unnecessary return trip after the dungeon is already finished.
How Horde Players Get to Hall of Thanes
Horde access is possible in the current beta, but Hall of Thanes is not a convenient Horde leveling dungeon. Ironforge and its guards are hostile, and no reliable Horde transport shortcut equivalent to the Alliance route has been confirmed.
Beta players have reported reaching the dungeon by travelling into the northern Eastern Kingdoms, passing through the Wetlands and Loch Modan into Dun Morogh, and then entering Ironforge itself. At the intended 13-18 level range this is a dangerous journey through hostile territory and can involve multiple deaths.
Hall of Thanes therefore should not be treated as a normal Horde leveling stop in the same way as Ragefire Chasm. Quest availability also differs: The Restless Dead is marked Alliance in the current database, while the remaining quest records do not provide enough consistent faction data to promise a complete Horde quest set.

Hall of Thanes is a relatively compact early dungeon rather than a large maze. The route moves from haunted burial chambers through Dark Iron-controlled areas and into the deeper royal vaults. The safest path is to follow the four bosses in sequence while clearing enough nearby trash to prevent patrols, charges, knockbacks or Fear effects from adding extra enemies.
| Order | Area | Boss | Main Route Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Anvilmar's Rest | Faldrim Anvilmar | Clear nearby spirits before engaging the boss and be ready to remove his curse if your group has a suitable class |
| 2 | Dark Iron section | Magmatus | Control Dark Iron casters, avoid unnecessary Fire damage and prioritize nearby Summoners and Engineers |
| 3 | Main golem hall | Plunder | Clear a safe section before pulling because Charge and the AoE knock-up can disrupt positioning or send players toward patrols |
| 4 | Reliquary of Kings | Durgen Dirgehammer | Clear the room, kill the two Lesser Stone Golems quickly and prepare for the boss's AoE Fear |
A lever in the final vault area has also been reported to open a shortcut back toward the front of the instance. Use it after Durgen if your group needs to return toward the entrance instead of running the entire route backward.
Hall of Thanes Bosses and Mechanics
The four encounters introduce several useful five-player mechanics very early: dispelling dangerous effects, controlling caster packs, prioritizing adds, reacting to charges and knockbacks, and preparing an entire room before an AoE Fear. The fights are not raid-style encounters, but the surrounding trash can make them much harder if it is left alive.
| Boss | Main Mechanics | What to Watch |
|---|---|---|
| Faldrim Anvilmar | Applies a curse that can petrify a player and reduce attack speed by 20%; some beta combat reports also record Mind Blast-style Shadow casts | Keep threat on the tank, remove the curse if possible and clear nearby spirits before the pull. Loot: Ephemeral Choker, Aetherwisp Bracers, Spiritwraith Drape |
| Magmatus | Heavy Fire damage and Combust, with dangerous Dark Iron Summoners and Engineers around the encounter area | Give the boss room to use Combust safely, keep the healer ready for burst Fire damage and control Summoners that cast Fireballs and summon Fire Elementals. Loot: Kindlegem Girdle, Flamefist Grips, Fang of Magmatus |
| Plunder | Periodically Charges a party member, briefly disrupting the target, and uses a large AoE knock-up around itself | Fight in a cleared area, keep the healer and ranged players ready for Charge and have the tank regain control quickly. Loot: Golemheart Stave, Golemguard Chest, Treads of the Protector Golem |
| Durgen Dirgehammer | AoE Fear, bleed pressure and two Lesser Stone Golems that begin the encounter with him | Kill the golems quickly and completely clear the room before Fear scatters the party. Loot: Durgen's Crescent Axe, Direhammer Leggings, Robes of the Disgraced Thane |
Faldrim Anvilmar Strategy
Faldrim Anvilmar is the first boss and one of the simpler encounters, but his room teaches an important Hall of Thanes rule: do not engage bosses while nearby trash is still active. Restless spirits around the encounter can turn a controlled pull into unnecessary healer pressure.
Current beta guides primarily warn about Faldrim's curse, which can turn a player to stone and reduce attack speed by 20%. Keep the boss firmly on the tank and remove the curse when your group has access to an appropriate dispel. Some beta combat reports also list Mind Blast-style Shadow casts, so an interrupt remains useful if that cast appears in your current build.
The boss currently has three recorded item-level 18 drops: Ephemeral Choker, Aetherwisp Bracers and Spiritwraith Drape.
Aetherwisp Bracers are particularly attractive to low-level casters because they combine Stamina with Spell Power. Spiritwraith Drape instead provides Agility and Spirit, making it more attractive to physical classes that benefit from Agility.
Magmatus Strategy
Magmatus is the main Fire-damage encounter and the second boss currently used by live beta walkthroughs and loot records. Some client encounter datasets have also displayed the name Infurnus for the second boss slot, so the name should still be treated as beta-sensitive rather than interpreted as evidence of a fifth boss.
Magmatus's main danger is Combust and the resulting Fire-damage pressure. Current beta walkthroughs describe a large Fire effect around the boss, making poor melee positioning especially expensive. Give the encounter enough room, avoid unnecessary stacking near the boss and keep the healer prepared for sudden group damage.
The approach also contains dangerous Dark Iron Summoners and Engineers. Summoners cast Fireballs and can summon Fire Elementals, while Engineers throw dynamite for AoE damage. Control or kill these enemies before they overlap with the boss fight, using interrupts, crowd control and line-of-sight pulls where appropriate.
Current recorded drops are Kindlegem Girdle, Flamefist Grips and Fang of Magmatus. The current Wowhead tooltip for Fang of Magmatus reliably shows +4 Intellect; additional beta tooltip effects have not been consistent enough across data sources to present as final.
Plunder Strategy
Plunder is a large mechanical golem encounter where positioning matters more than raw damage. The boss periodically Charges a party member, temporarily stunning or disrupting the target, and also uses a large AoE attack that knocks nearby characters into the air.
Before pulling, clear a corner, tunnel or nearby section of the room. This prevents the knock-up from throwing players toward an untouched patrol and gives the group a controlled area for Plunder's Charge. Pulling the boss back toward the approach tunnel can make the encounter easier to contain.
The tank should be prepared to Taunt or otherwise regain control immediately after a Charge. The healer and ranged DPS should also be ready to become Charge targets rather than assuming the boss will always stay on the tank.
The current recorded loot pool contains Golemheart Stave, Golemguard Chest and Treads of the Protector Golem. Golemheart Stave provides Stamina, Intellect and Spirit, while the two mail pieces provide Strength-oriented stats for physical characters.
Durgen Dirgehammer Strategy
Durgen Dirgehammer is the fourth and final boss and the encounter most likely to punish a rushed group. He begins with two Lesser Stone Golems, can apply a bleed and uses an AoE Fear, so fighting him in a room that still contains other enemies can quickly turn the pull into a wipe.
Clear the Reliquary of Kings before engaging him. When combat starts, kill the two Lesser Stone Golems quickly instead of forcing the healer to handle damage from Durgen and both adds at the same time. The tank should keep Durgen stable while DPS removes the golems.
The AoE Fear is the main positional threat. It can scatter the party and temporarily interrupt healing or damage. If every nearby pack is already dead, the Fear is disruptive but far less likely to pull additional enemies.
Durgen currently drops Durgen's Crescent Axe, Direhammer Leggings and Robes of the Disgraced Thane. The axe is a physical main-hand weapon, Direhammer Leggings provide Agility and Stamina, and the robe provides Intellect and Spirit for casters and healers.
Hall of Thanes Current Loot Table
The table below includes the 12 boss drops currently recorded from the Forever beta. It keeps quest rewards separate from boss loot. Because Forever is still in beta, item stats, tooltips and drop associations can still change before release.

Hall of Thanes Loot by Class
The most useful drop depends on your class, specialization and current gear rather than on one universal BiS list. This class filter uses the currently recorded Hall of Thanes loot above and highlights pieces whose armor type and stats naturally fit each class at this level.
| Class | Useful Hall of Thanes Drops | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | Kindlegem Girdle, Golemguard Chest, Treads of the Protector Golem, Durgen's Crescent Axe | Strength, Stamina and mail armor support tanking and physical leveling |
| Paladin | Kindlegem Girdle, Golemguard Chest, Treads of the Protector Golem, Durgen's Crescent Axe | Strong low-level Strength and Stamina options; caster items can also have situational Holy value |
| Hunter | Spiritwraith Drape, Flamefist Grips, Direhammer Leggings | Agility is the main attraction, and leather is usable at this level |
| Rogue | Spiritwraith Drape, Flamefist Grips, Direhammer Leggings, Durgen's Crescent Axe where weapon skills allow | Agility-focused armor and a physical main-hand option |
| Priest | Ephemeral Choker, Aetherwisp Bracers, Fang of Magmatus, Golemheart Stave, Robes of the Disgraced Thane | Spell Power, Intellect and Spirit provide useful healing and damage stats |
| Shaman | Spiritwraith Drape, Flamefist Grips, Golemheart Stave, Fang of Magmatus | A mix of physical, caster and healing-oriented stats can suit different builds |
| Mage | Ephemeral Choker, Aetherwisp Bracers, Fang of Magmatus, Golemheart Stave, Robes of the Disgraced Thane | Several strong early Intellect, Spirit and Spell Power upgrades |
| Warlock | Ephemeral Choker, Aetherwisp Bracers, Fang of Magmatus, Golemheart Stave, Robes of the Disgraced Thane | Early Spell Power and Intellect upgrades are valuable while leveling |
| Druid | Spiritwraith Drape, Flamefist Grips, Direhammer Leggings, Golemheart Stave, Fang of Magmatus | Feral and caster/healer builds can use different parts of the loot table |
This table is a practical class filter, not a final BiS ranking. Compare every drop against the item you already have because several Hall of Thanes quest rewards and nearby-zone rewards can compete directly with boss loot.
Hall of Thanes Quests
Hall of Thanes is especially valuable on a first run because several dungeon quests overlap naturally with the boss route. Four quests are fully indexed in the current public Forever quest database, while current beta walkthroughs and Wowhead reports also show a fifth quest, Treaty of Understanding, beginning from a stone tablet in the final boss area. Because its public database entry is less complete, the four fully indexed quests remain the safest preparation checklist.
| Quest | Objective | Where to Get It | Known Rewards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Important Heirlooms | Collect 8 Dwarven Heirlooms | Thom Filch near the dungeon entrance | Dwarven Tome or Tomb Robber's Gloves |
| The Restless Dead | Kill 15 Enraged Apparitions, 10 Tormented Souls and put Anvilmar's spirit to rest | Afadra Dunwall near the Old Ironforge approach | Dusty Belt or Cryptwalker Bracers |
| An Ancient Grudge | Defeat Faldrim Anvilmar | Inside the dungeon after the opening section | Catacomb Cloak or Deepgrave Trousers |
| Old Ironforge Incursion | Defeat Durgen Dirgehammer and bring his head to King Magni | Earthseer Farsen chain in Dun Morogh | Calibrated Blunderbuss, Ironforge Greathammer or Deepblaze |
Important Heirlooms Quest and Rewards
Important Heirlooms asks you to recover eight Dwarven Heirlooms inside the Hall of Thanes. Pick it up before the run because the objective can be completed naturally while clearing the instance and does not require a separate boss route.
The two current reward choices cover different character needs. Dwarven Tome is an off-hand with Spirit and Spell Power, making it useful when paired with a caster one-handed weapon. Tomb Robber's Gloves provide Stamina and Intellect on cloth gloves.
Casters should compare the Tome with their existing weapon setup because an off-hand only helps when paired with an appropriate one-handed main-hand weapon.
The Restless Dead and An Ancient Grudge
The Restless Dead and An Ancient Grudge overlap around Faldrim Anvilmar and the undead section of the dungeon. This makes them efficient to complete together rather than treating the first boss as a simple loot stop.
An Ancient Grudge offers Catacomb Cloak or Deepgrave Trousers. Catacomb Cloak currently provides Stamina and Attack Power, giving physical classes a useful guaranteed quest reward even when Faldrim does not drop the item they wanted.
The Restless Dead also requires enough undead trash kills, so avoid skipping every apparition while rushing toward Faldrim. A route that leaves the kill objectives incomplete can force another run for enemies you already passed.
Old Ironforge Incursion Quest Chain

Old Ironforge Incursion requires more preparation than the entrance quests because its chain begins with Dark Iron activity in Dun Morogh rather than inside the dungeon itself.
- Progress through the Dun Morogh quests that lead toward Earthseer Farsen near Gol'Bolar Quarry.
- Kill Dark Iron Spies around the relevant southeastern Dun Morogh objective area.
- Loot Dark Iron Map from the Dark Iron enemies involved in the chain.
- Use the map to begin Underground Map.
- Turn Underground Map in to Earthseer Farsen.
- Accept Old Ironforge Incursion.
- Enter Hall of Thanes, defeat Durgen Dirgehammer and obtain the required proof of his defeat.
- Bring it back to King Magni Bronzebeard.
The reward choice is unusually strong for an early dungeon quest. Calibrated Blunderbuss gives ranged weapon users a level-18 gun, Ironforge Greathammer provides Strength and Stamina on a two-handed mace, and Deepblaze is a caster wand with Intellect.
Because the quest requires preparation outside the dungeon, it is one of the easiest Hall of Thanes quests to miss on a first run. Complete the Dark Iron Map and Underground Map steps before your group enters.
Recommended Hall of Thanes Group Composition
The safest setup is the standard five-player dungeon composition: one tank, one healer and three DPS. Hall of Thanes does not require a specific class, but interrupts, dispels and crowd control make the Dark Iron caster packs and several boss mechanics considerably easier.
| Role | Recommended Setup | Why It Helps |
|---|---|---|
| Tank | Warrior, Paladin or Bear Druid | Controls trash packs, regains Plunder after Charge and holds Durgen while the two golems are killed |
| Healer | Priest, Paladin, Shaman or Druid | Handles Magmatus's Fire pressure and recovery after Durgen's Fear |
| DPS 1 | Any class with reliable interrupt | Useful against Dark Iron Summoners, Engineers and other casters |
| DPS 2 | Any controlled single-target DPS | Helps remove Summoners, Fire Elementals and Durgen's golems quickly |
| DPS 3 | Any DPS or utility class | Extra crowd control or dispel utility makes dangerous pulls safer |
You do not need an optimized composition. Clean pulls and correct mechanic handling are more important than stacking specific classes. At this level, one extra enemy can create more danger than a small difference in DPS output.
Minimum Gear and Preparation
Hall of Thanes has no published formal item-level requirement. Blizzard officially lists the dungeon for levels 13-18, so preparation is mainly about having level-appropriate gear and a functional role setup rather than reaching a specific item-level threshold.
- Tank: use level-appropriate armor and a real defensive setup; shield users should bring a shield rather than trying to tank entirely in a leveling DPS configuration.
- Healer: train current healing spell ranks and bring enough drinks to recover between pulls.
- Melee DPS: keep the best available weapon equipped because weapon damage has a major effect at this level.
- Casters: carry drinks, use current spell ranks and bring useful dispel or crowd-control abilities when available.
- Everyone: repair before entering and leave enough bag space for boss loot and quest items.
A level 13 group in weak leveling gear will feel very different from a level 16 group wearing several quest blues and greens, but normal quest progression and a few additional levels should be enough preparation for most groups.
Hall of Thanes Trash and Dangerous Enemies
Trash control often determines whether a Hall of Thanes run feels smooth. Dark Iron casters, Engineers, Summoners and restless spirits can punish groups that pull multiple packs without assigning interrupts or crowd control.
- Dark Iron Summoners: high-priority targets because they cast Fireballs and can summon Fire Elementals, adding more enemies and more Fire damage to the pull.
- Dark Iron Engineers: throw dynamite that deals AoE damage; crowd control such as Polymorph or Sap is particularly useful when available.
- Enraged Apparitions and other spirits: control dangerous casts and remember that several undead enemies also count toward The Restless Dead objectives.
- Patrols: clear them before boss pulls where Charge, knock-up or Fear mechanics can move players around the room.
The dungeon rewards controlled pulls much more than large uncontrolled packs. Low-level characters do not yet have their complete class toolkit, so overlapping caster abilities and extra enemies can become dangerous very quickly.
Is Hall of Thanes Worth Running More Than Once?
The first run has particularly high value because dungeon quests add several guaranteed reward choices on top of boss drops. Repeated runs make sense when a specific item-level 18 boss drop would be a major upgrade or when your character still benefits from the dungeon's experience.
Casters have several attractive targets spread across different bosses, including Aetherwisp Bracers, Fang of Magmatus, Golemheart Stave and Robes of the Disgraced Thane. Physical characters can target Agility leather, Strength mail or weapons depending on class.
If experience is your only goal, compare another Hall of Thanes clear with the questing routes available at your current level. The first quest-complete run offers much more guaranteed value than repeatedly clearing the instance only for normal mob experience.
Hall of Thanes Carry
Players who want the dungeon completed for quests, specific boss kills or current boss loot without assembling their own group can use the WoW Forever Dungeon Carry. Hall of Thanes is most useful as an early leveling dungeon when one clear completes several quests and gear objectives at the same time rather than as a standalone endgame farm.
Hall of Thanes FAQ
The most common Hall of Thanes questions are about the hidden Ironforge entrance, faction access, quest preparation, boss mechanics and which current beta loot records are available.
What level is Hall of Thanes in WoW Forever?
Blizzard officially lists Hall of Thanes for levels 13-18.
Where is Hall of Thanes?
It is beneath Ironforge in Old Ironforge. Enter The High Seat from The Great Forge and take the descending corridor on the left side of the throne room.
What are the Hall of Thanes entrance coordinates?
The current beta route begins around 43.5, 52.0 in Ironforge before descending toward Old Ironforge and the instance portal.
How many bosses are in Hall of Thanes?
Four current encounters are documented: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus, Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer.
Why is Magmatus sometimes called Infurnus?
Some beta client encounter datasets have displayed Infurnus in the second-boss slot, while current live-beta walkthroughs and player-facing loot records use Magmatus. This is a beta-data naming inconsistency, not evidence of an additional boss.
Can Horde enter Hall of Thanes?
Current beta players report successfully reaching and entering the dungeon, but Ironforge is hostile and no convenient Horde access route has been confirmed. The dungeon remains primarily an Alliance-side leveling instance.
Are there Horde Hall of Thanes quests?
No complete Horde-specific quest set is reliably documented yet. Some quest records have neutral or incomplete faction data, while The Restless Dead is explicitly marked Alliance.
How many Hall of Thanes quests are there?
Four are fully indexed in the current public Forever quest database: Important Heirlooms, The Restless Dead, An Ancient Grudge and Old Ironforge Incursion. Current beta walkthroughs and Wowhead reports also show Treaty of Understanding in the final boss area, bringing the currently observed total to five.
What is the best Hall of Thanes caster loot?
Aetherwisp Bracers, Fang of Magmatus, Golemheart Stave and Robes of the Disgraced Thane are among the main caster-oriented boss drops, depending on your existing gear and class.
What is the best Hall of Thanes physical loot?
Spiritwraith Drape, Flamefist Grips, Direhammer Leggings, the Strength mail pieces and Durgen's Crescent Axe are the main physical options depending on class and current equipment.
Do you need a quest to enter Hall of Thanes?
No current evidence shows Old Ironforge Incursion or another quest functioning as an entry attunement. The quests provide objectives, story and rewards but should not be confused with a dungeon-access requirement.
What group setup should you use?
One tank, one healer and three DPS is the safest standard composition. Interrupts, crowd control and dispel utility are particularly useful.
Does Hall of Thanes require a minimum item level?
No formal minimum item level is currently published. Blizzard lists the dungeon for levels 13-18, and level-appropriate quest gear is a reasonable preparation baseline.
Conclusion
Hall of Thanes works best as a complete early-level dungeon run rather than a quick boss rush. The instance combines four encounters with several worthwhile quests, and much of its difficulty comes from controlling Dark Iron trash, preparing boss rooms and reacting correctly to curse, Fire, Charge, knock-up and Fear mechanics.
For Alliance characters, it fits naturally into the Dun Morogh and Ironforge progression around levels 13-18. Prepare the Old Ironforge Incursion chain before entering, collect the nearby dungeon quests and clear deliberately through all four bosses. Doing that gives the group the full value of the dungeon in one run: experience, quest rewards, boss gear and a complete introduction to one of Forever's first new leveling instances.
