WoW Forever Survival Hunter combines weapon-based melee attacks, combat traps, ranged openings and a trained pet. This guide covers the current level-30 beta after the October 1 talent changes, including two practical talent allocations, melee priorities, trap control, pet families and equipment for every slot. A standard 21-point Survival build reaches Strider Kick, but consistent access to Mongoose Bite through Expose Prey requires additional points. Higher-level progression is presented separately because the current beta does not allow those builds to be tested.
Short answer: Invest 21 Survival points to unlock Strider Kick, match your tracking to the enemy type, and use Raptor Strike alongside available Mongoose Bite procs and traps. With five early talent points from Talented, add Expose Prey and Resourcefulness for more reliable melee attacks and reduced mana pressure. Prioritize weapon upgrades, Agility and an appropriately trained pet, while retaining ranged attacks when melee opportunities are limited.
How Survival Hunter Melee Gameplay Works
Survival's melee abilities follow different activation rules. Some are usable on demand, while others require a dodge, parry or talent-generated proc. Understanding these conditions is essential at level 30 because the standard build cannot rely on Mongoose Bite in every encounter, particularly when a dungeon tank takes all incoming attacks.
- Raptor Strike: Enhances the next main-hand melee swing and has a six-second cooldown. Maintain automatic melee attacks so the queued strike can land.
- Mongoose Bite: Deals weapon-based damage and normally becomes usable after you dodge. Expose Prey provides another way to activate it.
- Counterattack: Becomes available after a parry, damages the enemy and immobilizes it. Expose Prey does not activate Counterattack.
- Strider Kick: Instantly deals 100% melee weapon damage, has an eight-second cooldown and increases movement speed by 30% for three seconds.
Strider Kick is not an interrupt. Its movement bonus helps reposition or retreat, but it does not prevent spellcasting. Counterattack and trap roots stop movement, not spells cast by an enemy that can remain stationary. A Survival Hunter should not treat these effects as a replacement for a proper interrupt.
When a pet or dungeon tank holds threat, the Hunter rarely receives the incoming attacks needed to dodge or parry. Raptor Strike and Strider Kick remain available, but Mongoose Bite and Counterattack are conditional until further talent investment. Deliberately taking damage to force those triggers is not a reliable damage strategy.
Survival Hunter Level-30 Talent Builds
At level 30, Hunters normally have 21 class talent points. The standard build below spends all of them in Survival. The second allocation uses the five additional early points provided by Talented at maximum rank. Both builds emphasize melee gameplay while preserving enough control and defensive utility for leveling and dungeons.
| Talent | Standard build | With Talented 5/5 | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Improved Tracking | 5/5 | 5/5 | Increases damage against the creature type currently tracked. |
| Deflection | 4/5 | 4/5 | Improves parry chance when attacked in melee. |
| Savage Strikes | 2/2 | 2/2 | Increases all melee damage by 2/4%, rather than critical strike chance. |
| Surefooted | 3/3 | 3/3 | Improves hit chance for all attacks and reduces movement-impairing duration. |
| Deterrence | 1/1 | 1/1 | Temporary increase to dodge and parry for defense. |
| Predator's Edge | 4/5 | 5/5 | Improves melee critical damage and off-hand weapon damage. |
| Counterattack | 1/1 | 1/1 | Reactive melee strike and root after a parry. |
| Strider Kick | 1/1 | 1/1 | Reliable instant melee damage and brief movement boost. |
| Expose Prey | 0/2 | 2/2 | Attacks against a marked target can activate Mongoose Bite. |
| Resourcefulness | 0/2 | 2/2 | Reduces trap and melee mana costs and supports mana regeneration. |
| Total class points | 21 — 0/0/21 | 26 — 0/0/26 | All points invested in Survival. |
Begin with Improved Tracking 5/5, Savage Strikes 2/2 and Deflection 3/5, reaching ten points invested. Then obtain Surefooted 3/3, Deterrence 1/1 and the fourth Deflection rank. Spend the next points on Counterattack and Predator's Edge 4/5, and take Strider Kick at level 30. This reaches the deeper talent rows while maintaining the required previous investment.
Improved Tracking increases damage by 5% at maximum rank against the creature type currently tracked. This is not a permanent bonus against every enemy. Tracking Beasts, for instance, will not provide that bonus against Humanoids. Change your tracking to the target type whenever you have the appropriate tracking ability available.
What the Additional Legacy Points Change
With Talented at maximum rank, class talent points begin at level 5 instead of 10. The result is 26 points at level 30, while the eventual class talent ceiling remains 51. The expanded allocation adds Expose Prey 2/2, Resourcefulness 2/2 and the final rank of Predator's Edge.
Expose Prey gives melee and ranged attacks against your Hunter's Mark target a 10% chance at 2/2 to activate Mongoose Bite for five seconds. Resourcefulness at 2/2 reduces the mana cost of melee and trap abilities by 60%, while critical strikes can activate mana regeneration from Spirit during casting. Together, these talents address the two most noticeable limitations of the standard level-30 melee setup: unreliable Mongoose Bite access and frequent mana expenditure.
Adjusting the Build for Trap Control
For a control-oriented alternative, move the four Deflection points into Entrapment 4/5 while retaining Deterrence and Counterattack. The total number of points remains unchanged. You sacrifice passive parry chance in exchange for a reliable root from triggering traps, lasting four seconds at this rank. This option is more attractive when controlling enemy movement matters more than receiving attacks yourself.
Entrapment no longer follows its old random-proc design. It now roots affected targets when a trap triggers, and additional talent ranks increase the duration. The root remains subject to enemy immunity and encounter-specific restrictions, so it is useful control rather than a guaranteed solution against every target.
Survival Hunter Rotation and Combat Priorities
A level-30 Survival Hunter should use a conditional priority rather than repeat a fixed sequence. The availability of reactive melee attacks depends on whether the Hunter is taking attacks, while ranged opportunities depend on distance and the enemy's movement. Pet threat, mana and trap positioning also affect which action is appropriate.
Single-Target Melee Priority
Match tracking to the enemy type, direct your pet at the intended target and apply Hunter's Mark. Start at range when appropriate, then close into melee and use the following priorities:
- Queue Raptor Strike: Use it when available and maintain main-hand auto-attacks so it connects. Avoid delaying it unnecessarily while remaining in melee range.
- Use Mongoose Bite whenever activated: The activation window can expire. With Expose Prey, keep Hunter's Mark on the enemy being attacked.
- Use Strider Kick: It delivers an on-demand weapon-based attack. Its movement bonus is valuable for repositioning, not spell interruption.
- Use Counterattack following a parry: Take the available attack when useful, and use its root to control an enemy or create distance.
- Apply damage-over-time effects when worthwhile: Serpent Sting or Immolation Trap can contribute against enemies that live long enough, but unnecessary applications consume mana.
This order is a practical starting point, not a guaranteed maximum-DPS script. An expiring Mongoose Bite activation, a dangerous enemy ability or the need for crowd control may take priority. Keep enough mana for emergency traps and useful ranged attacks instead of spending everything on a target that is almost defeated.
When to Add Ranged Attacks
Ranged attacks remain important before all melee talents are available, when beginning a pull and whenever mechanics force you away from a target. Strider Kick can help you move out of melee range and create a shooting opportunity. However, switching distance also sacrifices melee uptime, so only weave ranged attacks when the situation makes it beneficial.
The ranged dead zone still requires appropriate positioning: move outside the minimum range before attempting a shot. Aimed Shot is baseline from level 20 and shares its cooldown with Multi-Shot. Arcane Shot does not share that cooldown with Aimed Shot. As a result, do not build a sequence around immediately casting Multi-Shot after Aimed Shot. The beta also has a known Auto Shot timing bug, so do not base a permanent rotation on unusually favorable movement behavior.
Carry suitable arrows or bullets and refill ammunition before extended dungeon runs. The WoW Forever Hunter guide covers general ranged progression. Choosing Survival does not remove the ranged abilities available to every Hunter.

View All WoW Forever ServicesCombat Traps, Placement and Crowd Control
WoW Forever allows Hunters to place traps during combat. Their baseline cooldown is 30 seconds, with separate cooldown groups for Fire and Frost traps. Traps appear at your current position rather than under a distant enemy, so placement requires understanding where the target will move. Effective trap use can prevent damage, isolate a dangerous target or create a safer opening for melee attacks.
- Immolation Trap: Applies burning damage to the first enemy that approaches. Use it when the target will survive long enough for the damage-over-time effect.
- Freezing Trap: Incapacitates the first enemy that triggers it. Damage breaks the control, so keep your pet and damage-over-time effects away from the trapped target.
- Frost Trap: Creates a slowing area and becomes available at level 28. Use it to control approaching enemies or open space for movement.
Freezing Trap and Frost Trap share the Frost cooldown category. Fire traps have their own category, but damaging an enemy that you intend to freeze can still break control. Decide which enemy you need to stop before using a trap, especially when multiple targets are involved.
Feign Death remains useful for reducing threat and escaping failed pulls, but it is no longer required before using traps in combat. In group content, coordinate trap placement with the tank and control assignments. Keep your pet away from crowd-controlled targets and recall it before it follows an escaping enemy into another pack.
Weapons, Aspects and Mana for Melee Survival
Weapon quality matters because the core Survival melee toolkit scales with weapon damage. A strong two-hander supports main-hand melee attacks, while dual wielding benefits from Predator's Edge. The correct choice depends on the weapons you can acquire, their actual damage and their useful stats. Hunters cannot wear mail until level 40, so level-30 gearing should focus primarily on leather armor.
Predator's Edge improves the melee critical strike damage bonus and off-hand damage. At 5/5, the listed bonuses are 30% and 50%, respectively. Raptor Strike, Mongoose Bite and Strider Kick use main-hand weapon damage; the off-hand portion of the talent improves the off-hand weapon's own attacks instead of adding a separate off-hand strike to these abilities.
Aspect of the Beast is available at level 30 and grants 50 melee Attack Power at its first rank. Use it for melee-focused encounters. Aspect of the Hawk favors ranged damage, while Aspect of the Monkey increases Dodge when survivability matters. Only one Aspect can remain active at a time.
Carry drinking water and plan mana expenditure across several pulls. Resourcefulness makes melee attacks and traps significantly cheaper once talented, but it does not eliminate the costs of ranged shots. Frequent Aspect changes, unnecessary Serpent Sting refreshes and traps placed without a clear purpose can still drain your mana.
Survival Hunter Level-30 Gear for Every Slot
The following equipment checklist covers all armor, jewelry, trinket and weapon slots relevant to a level-30 melee Survival Hunter. It includes both weapon configurations and a ranged weapon. The items are practical gearing targets based on documented Forever records, not a definitive simulated best-in-slot ranking. Some are profession-bound, faction-specific, rare drops or rewards from difficult quests. Their availability should be checked in the current beta before committing to a long farm.
| Slot | Recommended item | Stats and requirements | Source and evaluation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Head | Brawler's Leather Helm | +10 Agility, +13 Stamina; level 25. | New Forever Leatherworking craft. Binds on pickup; plan around making it with the required profession rather than assuming it can be traded. |
| Neck | Sentinel's Medallion / Scout's Medallion | +8 Agility, +5 Stamina; level 28. | Alliance/Horde Warsong Gulch faction vendors. Check reputation requirements and faction availability. |
| Shoulders | Forest Tracker Epaulets | +11 Agility, +5 Strength; level 26. | Rare bind-on-equip world drop. Mantle of Thieves is a dungeon alternative from Razorfen Kraul. |
| Back | Hawkeye's Cloak | +7 Agility, +3 Strength; level 30. | Rare bind-on-equip drop. Strong offensive stats but not a guaranteed or inexpensive acquisition. |
| Chest | Dusky Leather Armor | +14 Agility; level 30. | Leatherworking craft that binds on equip. An accessible alternative to rare dungeon gear if materials are available. |
| Wrists | Hawkeye's Bracers | +6 Agility, +4 Strength; level 30. | Rare bind-on-equip drop. Alliance players can also consider Arathi Armbands from Wanted! Otto and Falconcrest. |
| Hands | Alterac Assassin's Gloves | +12 Agility; no required level listed. | Alliance quest reward from Crushridge Warmongers. Ebon Vise from a rare Scarlet Monastery enemy is another option. |
| Waist | Skulker's Leather Belt | +6 Strength, +9 Agility, +6 Stamina, +4 Spirit; level 30. | New Forever Leatherworking item; binds on pickup. Highlander's/Defiler's Chain Girdle is a PvP reputation alternative. |
| Legs | Triprunner Dungarees | +3 Strength, +18 Agility, +6 Stamina; no required level listed. | Gnomeregan quest reward from Rig Wars or The Grand Betrayal. Dungeon objectives may require group assistance. |
| Feet | Vorrel's Boots | +10 Agility, +4 Stamina, +10 Spirit; no required level listed. | Horde quest reward from Vorrel's Revenge. Alliance players can use appropriate leather boots or faction PvP rewards. |
| Ring 1 | Monkey Ring | +7 Agility, +7 Spirit; no required level listed. | Reward from the Willix the Importer escort quest in Razorfen Kraul. |
| Ring 2 | Ironspine's Eye | +9 Agility, +4 Strength; level 30. | Rare Ironspine drop in Scarlet Monastery Graveyard. Not a guaranteed spawn. |
| Trinket 1 | Rune of Duty | Stamina and resistance bonuses; level 20. | Warsong Gulch faction reward. Defensive utility, subject to PvP reputation and purchase conditions. |
| Trinket 2 | Talisman of Arathor / Defiler's Talisman | +6 Stamina; absorbs 278–338 physical damage for 15 seconds; level 28. | Alliance/Horde Arathi Basin reputation item. A defensive choice rather than a confirmed melee DPS improvement. |
| Main Hand | Bloody Brass Knuckles | 21.88 DPS, +12 Attack Power; level 29. | Interrogator Vishas in Scarlet Monastery. Also grants conditional Attack Power against Humanoids. |
| Off Hand | Ironspine's Fist | 22.92 DPS, +7 Strength; level 30. | One-Hand mace from the rare Ironspine in Scarlet Monastery Graveyard. Suitable for dual wielding. |
| Two-Hand Weapon | Morbid Dawn | 30.17 DPS, +10 Strength, +15 Stamina; level 30. | Two-Hand sword from the rare Fallen Champion in Scarlet Monastery Graveyard. Replaces both one-handed weapons. |
| Ranged | Truthseeker's Bow | 23.75 DPS, +7 Agility, +3 Stamina; no required level listed. | New Forever reward tied to Greater Friend of the Library. Confirm the relevant quest is available; otherwise use a level-appropriate dungeon bow or gun. |
How to gear efficiently: Upgrade your main-hand weapon first if melee is your primary damage source. When dual wielding, evaluate off-hand damage alongside Predator's Edge. Agility remains broadly useful, while Strength, melee Attack Power, hit and survivability can influence individual decisions. Ranged weapon quality still matters because the level-30 build regularly uses ranged attacks, especially before Expose Prey is available.
Do not treat the checklist as an instruction to farm every rare spawn. The Scarlet Monastery Graveyard items depend on rare enemies, quest rewards may require help, and profession-bound crafted pieces cannot always be obtained from another player. If a recommended piece is unavailable, use an appropriate quest reward, dungeon item or green leather item with Agility and other useful stats. Hunter ammunition and a suitable quiver or ammo pouch are additional practical supplies, although they are not replacements for the ranged weapon slot.
Choosing a Survival Hunter Pet
A Survival Hunter should choose a pet according to the job it needs to perform: holding enemies during solo play, improving party damage, controlling movement or contributing personal DPS. In Forever, pet statistics scale with Hunter equipment, while player stat-increasing buffs no longer apply directly to pets. A newly tamed animal may perform poorly until its abilities have been trained to suitable ranks.
| Family | Family ability | Practical use |
|---|---|---|
| Cat | Prowl | A personal-damage choice. Stealth strengthens the next attack; fast Cats using Claw are currently noteworthy because of beta-specific behavior. |
| Boar | Charge | Closes distance, immobilizes the enemy and improves the pet's next attack. Helps begin solo pulls. |
| Tallstrider | Dust Cloud | Reduces enemy Armor and can support your Physical melee damage. |
| Wolf | Furious Howl | Increases melee Attack Power for nearby party members. Its usefulness depends on positioning and group composition. |
| Spider | Web | Immobilizes and damages the target over time, providing additional control and repositioning opportunities. |
| Raptor | Savage Rend | Applies a pet-generated bleed. Evaluate its actual damage and Focus expenditure separately from the Hunter's own abilities. |
The October 7 Wowhead beta guide identifies fast Cats, including The Rake using Claw rank 4, as particularly strong in current PvE. It explicitly attributes the advantage to bugs. This is a temporary beta observation, not a guaranteed permanent pet ranking. Furious Howl also received an Attack Power reduction in beta adjustments, so numerical comparisons from older guides may be misleading.
Taming, Training and Keeping the Pet Ready
Complete the Hunter pet quest chain at level 10 to unlock taming and the companion toolkit. Use Beast Training to teach compatible skills, and check the pet's level, loyalty and training points when a rank is unavailable. Some skills are supplied by pet trainers, while others require learning the rank from a beast that already possesses it.
Train an appropriate damage ability and the family's unique skill before comparing pets. Forever expands the availability of Bite, Claw, Dash and Dive, but this does not mean every family gains every family-specific ability. Family identity remains important for damage support, threat generation and control.
Feed Pet improves happiness outside combat. Use food compatible with the family and appropriate for the pet's level. Mend Pet restores health instead. Keep happiness high and monitor loyalty, because healing and feeding solve different problems.
Use the stable when preserving an existing companion or temporarily taming another beast to learn an ability. Enable automatic Growl when your pet should hold a solo target and disable it when a player tank controls threat. The WoW Forever Hunter pets guide provides more general information about pet management.
Survival Talent Progression After Level 30
Higher-level recommendations remain theoretical until the beta cap increases. Starting from the standard 0/0/21 allocation, the immediate priorities are improving Mongoose Bite availability and reducing the mana burden of frequent melee attacks and traps.
One possible progression is Expose Prey 2/2 at levels 31–32, Resourcefulness 2/2 at levels 33–34 and the final Predator's Edge rank at level 35. This reaches the same 26-point Survival allocation available at level 30 with maximum Talented. Further points can be invested in Survivalist's Discipline for shorter trap and Deterrence cooldowns, or developed toward Lightning Reflexes and the deeper talents.
Lacerating Strikes is a deeper Survival talent that adds a bleed to Mongoose Bite. Its current record describes bleeding damage equal to 40% of the triggering Mongoose Bite damage over 21 seconds. Blizzard has also corrected its ability to critically strike. This talent is not part of either level-30 allocation discussed here.
With standard talent progression, a Survival-focused Hunter can reach the 31-point talent at level 40. The actual value of later secondary-tree choices, petless builds and complete melee rotations must be reassessed against playable higher-level content. The level-30 beta does not establish a definitive level-60 raid build or a permanent best pet.
Survival Hunter FAQ
These answers clarify the limits of the current build, pet restrictions and the most common questions about level-30 Survival equipment.
Can Survival Hunter play without a pet?
Yes, but these Survival builds do not provide a petless damage bonus. Playing without a companion sacrifices pet damage and family utility. Lone Wolf is a separate Marksmanship talent, not an automatic Survival benefit.
Can I tame a beast above my Hunter's level?
No. The beta changes prevent taming a beast higher than the Hunter's current level. Choose a tameable creature at or below your level.
Is a rare pet automatically stronger?
No. Rarity alone does not guarantee more damage. Compare the current attack behavior, family skill and trained ranks. The advantage of certain fast Cats in this beta may disappear after bug fixes.
Can a level-30 Hunter wear mail armor?
No. Mail proficiency becomes available at level 40. At level 30, leather gear is generally the most suitable armor choice for a melee Survival build.
Do I need every item in the gear table?
No. These are practical equipment targets, not mandatory best-in-slot pieces. Prioritize obtainable weapon upgrades and useful Agility gear over long farms for rare items with small improvements.
Conclusion
At level 30, Survival works best when you understand which melee attacks are available on demand and which require a defensive event or proc. Use appropriate tracking, maintain Raptor Strike and Strider Kick opportunities, position traps deliberately and keep a trained pet active. Expose Prey and Resourcefulness make sustained melee gameplay more consistent when additional talent points are available. Equip useful items across every slot, but build around obtainable weapons and the current beta toolkit instead of untested higher-level rotations.
